The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is being destroyed mainly through human settlement and development of the land, with over 580,000 km2 destroyed since 1980. This deforestation directly impacts the animals that rely on trees for food and shelter and the insects that depend on flowers for survival. Additionally, water pollution is worsening as logging degrades the forest, and by 2050 the shrinking rainforest may become a source of carbon emissions rather than absorbing carbon. Commonly called the "Lungs of the Earth", the Amazon supplies much of the planet's oxygen but is threatened if deforestation continues. While some improvements have been made, much more progress is still needed to protect this important ecosystem.

The main sources of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest are human settlement and development of the land.
Since 1980 580,000km2 of the rainforest has been destroyed.
The animals living in this rainforest are directly affected by deforestation. Trees form their main source of food. They also build their nest and take shelter in different trees.
Numerous species of insects depend on the flowers’ nectar for survival.
The Amazon river contains 20 percent of the fresh water on Earth and its freshwater systems contain minerals that are important to fertilizing land in the rainforest. Water pollution is worsening in the Amazon as a result of extensive logging in the rainforest.
The shrinking rainforest could result in the Amazon shifting from a carbon bank that keeps the element out of the atmosphere, to a source of carbon in the atmosphere by the year 2050.
The Amazon is known as the Lungs of the Earth. This is because it supplies most of the oxygen for Earth. Although it gives us oxygen it will not last forever.

Although there have been some improvements in the rainforest there is still a long way to go until this rainforest is safe.
