There are three major rainforests in the world: the Amazon, Congo, and Indonesia rainforests. The Amazon is the largest rainforest containing about 390 billion trees. Rainforests are full of beautiful and exotic animals and provide 50% of the world's food and 3/4 of clean water. Indigenous people of the Amazon live in houses made of leaves and straw, with fathers farming/hunting and mothers gardening/cooking, while children learn about plants and animals through play. Threats to the rainforest include deforestation for wood and paper, but conservation efforts like providing technology to report illegal logging are helping to protect these vital ecosystems.

- 13. How People Live in the Amazon. • They live in houses made of leaves and straw. • Fathers are farmers and hunters. • Mothers work in the garden and cook.
- 14. The children don’t go to school but they learn a lot about animals and plants. In their free time they swim, fish and play with animals. When they are sick, their doctor, “shaman”, makes medicine from plants. Their favourite animals are frogs, parrots, monkeys and snakes. These animals are their pets and they love them.

- 18. Many people in the world want to cut down the trees in the rainforests. They want the wood to make furniture and paper. But people who want to save the environment are helping. Recently, the village chief was given a mobile phone by people in the USA. He took photos of some men who were cutting down trees and sent them to the police. The men were caught! I’m so glad … I love forests!
