Theseus' father was King Aegeus of Athens. Theseus found his father's sword and sandals under a large rock, proving his lineage. His mother said he had shown his strength and wisdom. King Minos of Crete demanded seven young men and women from Athens to be fed to the Minotaur every year. Theseus promised King Minos' daughter Ariadne he would kill the Minotaur, which was half man and half bull, and free Athens from this tribute. The Minotaur lived in the Labyrinth, an elaborate maze. To defeat it, Theseus would need both strength and wisdom to retrieve his sword, follow Ariadne's ball of thread to find his way
