This document compares the TOEFL and IELTS English proficiency exams. Both exams test reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, but they differ in format, timing, scoring and question types. The TOEFL is available online or on paper, takes 4 hours and 10 minutes, and scores sections separately from 0-30 and the total from 0-120. The IELTS is only paper-based, takes 2 hours and 45 minutes, and provides band scores from 1-9 for each section and overall. Sample speaking questions are provided for both exams.
