TOM JONES AS PICARESQUE NOVEL
MEANING OF PICARESQUE NOVEL Spanish word “ picaro” From picaro Means rogue or rascal
DEFINITION  The picaresque novel is the genre of prose fiction that depicts the adventures of a roguish hero/ heroine of low social class who lives by his or her wits in corrupt society
CHARACTERSTICS  First person narration  Main character is often of low character or low social class  No plot but stories in series  Circumstances change but picaro is always picaro  Satire
THE PROTAGONIST AS PICARO - Tom humiliated by family and society - According to his teacher Tom is wild and Blifil is pious - Tom frequently steals apples and ducks to support the family of Black George - Blifil calls Tom a Bastard
RELATIONSHIPS OF TOM WITH MANY WOMEN  Molly Seagrim  She becomes pregnant  Tom admits that he would be the father  Mrs. Waters  Tom rescues her  Affair  Tom goes to London behind Sophia  Fall in love with Nancy  Tom’s affair with Lady Bellaston  Sophia’s Aunty
HEROINE OF TOM But we can not forget Sophia who is a beautiful girl , falls in love with Tom and also Tom loves Sophia from the beginning. At the end, Sophia questions on Tom’s chastity. Then they marries.
PICARESQUE TYPE MOVIES  MOVIE  Ek Villain  The hero live a life of picaresque type
 Movie  Benaam Badshah  Heroine changes his life at the end.
QUESTIONS ON PICARO  If a girl is the only changer of Picaro’s fortune?  If Picaro has to be guilty for so many affairs in the novel “Tom Jones”?
