NOVEL
Spanish word “ picaro”
From picaro
Means rogue or rascal
DEFINITION
 The picaresque novel is the genre of
prose fiction that depicts the adventures of
a roguish hero/ heroine of low social class
who lives by his or her wits in corrupt
society
CHARACTERSTICS
 First person narration
 Main character is often of low character or
low social class
 No plot but stories in series
 Circumstances change but picaro is
always picaro
 Satire
THE PROTAGONIST AS PICARO
- Tom humiliated by family and society
- According to his teacher
Tom is wild and Blifil is pious
- Tom frequently steals apples and ducks to
support the family of Black George
- Blifil calls Tom a Bastard
