Mrs.S.MATHANGI.M.Sc.,M.Phil.,
Assistant Professor
Introduction
• Flower arrangement is an art in which an
attempt is made to arrange flowers , foliage
,plants and flower vases in such a way that all
of these when arranged produce a
harmonious appearance, texture and color
combination.
• Main objective is to make the place where it is
to be placed cheerful, lively and beautiful.
• It expresses one’ love for beauty
TYPES OF FLOWER ARRANGEMENT
In this type only a small
amount of plant material is
used in order to display the
beautiful lines of plant growth
Mass Arrangement
Line Arrangement[Japanese flower
arrangement [Ikebana]
Combination of line and mass arrangement
This composition combines
the best features of line and
mass arrangements. Design is
emphasized in these
arrangements they are usually
stylized. Some popular shapes
are Circle, semicircle, oval,
S=shaped [Hogarth curve]
crescent, Diagonal, Horizontal,
Vertical and fan.
Foliage arrangement
Arrangements using beautiful,
attractive leaves or branches of plants
are used. It is semi permanent.
Miniature arrangement
• Small arrangements are
made with small
flowers are made with
small flowers in tiny
containers such as ash
trays, dainty bottles etc
Arrangement should
not be more than five
inches
Dry arrangement
More permanent. Dry woods,
dried seeds, dry flowers leaves
pods egg shells, thorns palm
flowers are used..
Fruits and vegetable arrangement
It is done by using fresh fruits,
and vegetables to depict beautiful
shapes and designs.
Floating arrangement
It is arranged with flowers whose
stems are cut short. The largest or the
brightest flower floats in the center
and the other around it. This creates
an impression of natural flowers in
pond.
Diminutive arrangement
They are small arrangement
usually within four inches in height
arranged in small containers like egg
shell, small bottles etc.
Steps in arranging flowers
– Establishing the basic outline of the
design
– Securing the focal flowers
– Filling in with fill flowers and
foliage
Types of flower arrangement
Horizontal flower arrangement
A very shallow container is used to make this type of
flower arrangement. It has a single big flower as the focal
point and drooping flower branches are added to each side.
Rose is the main flower used as the focal point in this type
of flower arrangement. Horizontal flower arrangements
are very low and hence are suitable for center table
decorations.
Horizontal:
Secure the line flowers extending out on either
side of the containers so that flowers and container
form a horizontal line. Secure focal flowers in the
center. Fill in around the focal point.
Vertical arrangement
It is a very tall flower arrangement. Very tall
stems of flowers and leaves like tulips, roses and
carnations are used for this type of flower
arrangement. Short stem flowers are not suitable to
make this arrangement.
Vertical:
Secure a line flower in the center of the
container to establish the height of the design.
Place focal flowers at the base so they hang over
the top of the container slightly. Fill in with foliage
and flowers, maintaining the vertical shape of the
arrangement.
Crescent flower arrangement
Depending on the size of the crescent, curved shaped flower stems
have to be selected. Flowers with flexible stems like gladiola and
carnations can be used. Crescent flower arrangements are suitable for
coffee table decoration.
Crescent:
Secure line flowers which have been
curved to form a crescent shape. Add focal flowers
to the center, just above the base. Using smaller
flowers and foliage fill in around the focal point
and up the crescent slightly
This type of flower arrangement uses the tallest
flower stems in the center while the smaller
flowers are placed on the sides to maintain the
triangular shape. Triangular flower arrangements
are used mostly in wedding ceremonies.
Triangular Arrangement
For a right-angle triangle shape, first
place line flowers in the container to establish
the height of the arrangement. Secure other
line flowers on either the left or right side to
delineate the outline. Secure focal flowers at
the base of the triangle and fill in, maintaining
the outline.
Traingle:
For an equilateral triangle shape, place one
line flower upright in the center of the container to
establish the height of the arrangement. Place two line
flowers on each side of the center flower to form a
triangle with sides of the same length. Place focal
flowers in the center, allowing them to drop slightly
over the top of the container. Fill in foliage and smaller
flowers, keeping them inside the triangle’s boundaries.
Oval flower arrangement
This type of flower arrangement has the brightest
and tallest flowers in the center. The color and the size of
the flowers are allowed to gradually reduce by degrees
towards the sides. Oval flower arrangements look formal
and hence it's used mostly in formal settings.
Oval:
Arrange flowers so that they are higher
at the center than at the sides. Add more of the
same flowers to fill in the oval outline, and all
with foliage or tiny flowers.
Round
Round and oval arrangements contain no line
materials, and are often made with only lone kind of
flower and one kind of fill. Arrange several flowers
into ball shape in the center of the container (each
flower should extend out the same distance from the
container). Use more of the same flowers to fill in the
ball shape. Fill in with smaller flowers of foliage.
Hogarth's curve or lazy "s”
This is the most complex type of
flower arrangement. The flowers are
arranged to form a 'S' shape. It requires
a lot of professional skill to form
Hogarth or S-curve:
Place curved line flowers in container to
form an S-shape. Add focal flowers to the
center, but arrange them so that they follow
the curve slightly. Fill in with foliage and
smaller flowers if desired.
