THE BOURBON DYNASTY RETURNED
• Alfonso XIII (son of María Cristina and Alfonso XII) was King from 1902
to 1923.
1923
• A general named Primo de Rivera led a military coup and established a
dictatorship.
• In 1931, General Primo de Rivera gave up all his power. The Second
Republic was established, and Alfonso XIII left the country.
The Second Republic (1931-1936).
• During the Second Republic (1931-1936) there were important reforms.
Spain became a democracy, and both men and women could vote in
elections.

• In 1936, a general named Francisco Franco led a military coup against the
republican goverment. That was the beginning of the Spanish Civil War
(1936- 1939). During the war, Spaniards divided into two groups. The
nationalists, led by Franco and the republicans.

SPANISH CIVIL WAR
• 1936-1939.
• Spaniards divided into two groups:
- Nationalists, led by Franco.
- Republicans.
FRANCO´S DICTATORSHIP
• The Spanish Civil War lasted three years and finally ended in 1939. The
nationalists won the war and Franco established a dictatorship from 1939 to
1975.
FRANCO´S DICTATORSHIP
• Citizens didn´t have civil right.
• There were no political parties or democratic elections.
• Many people were arrested, sent to prison, tortured and executed.
• Other people left Spain and went into exile in other countries.
• After war, Spain was a por country.
• The dictatorship continued until Franco´s death in 1975, thirty-six years after
the end of the Civil War.
THE RETURN TO DEMOCRACY
• In 1975, Juan Carlos I became the King of Spain.
TRANSITION AND DEMOCRACY
• The King named Adolfo Suárez as the president of the new government.
• 1977, the Spanish people voted to choose the country´s first democratic
goverment since the Second Republic.
CONSTITUTION
• In 1978, the Spanish people approved a new constitution in a referendum.
This is our Constitution.
