Spain experienced several political changes in the 20th century. In the early 1900s, Alfonso XIII became King but was later overthrown in 1923 by Primo de Rivera's coup. This led to the establishment of the Second Republic from 1931-1936, which established democracy. However, the Spanish Civil War broke out from 1936-1939 after Franco led a coup against the Republican government. The nationalists, led by Franco, defeated the Republicans, leading to Franco establishing a dictatorship from 1939-1975.

13. FRANCO´S DICTATORSHIP
• The Spanish Civil War lasted three years and finally ended in 1939. The
nationalists won the war and Franco established a dictatorship from 1939 to
1975.

• Citizens didn´t have civil right.
• There were no political parties or democratic elections.
• Many people were arrested, sent to prison, tortured and executed.
• Other people left Spain and went into exile in other countries.
• After war, Spain was a por country.
• The dictatorship continued until Franco´s death in 1975, thirty-six years after
the end of the Civil War.
