 I. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson- shot by mistake by a Confederate soldier on May 2, 1863  A. Lost his left arm to amputation  B. Caught pneumonia and died 7 days later
 II. Battle of Gettysburg- July 1,2 & 3 in Gettysburg PA  A. Bloodiest multi-day battle of CW (51,000 casualties  B. Most decisive battle between the Union and Confederate  1. Lee’s army severely weakened  2. Lee gave up any hope of invading the North  3. Union took control of the war
 III. Vicksburg- Mississippi  A. Confederate city fell to Grant’s army on July 4, 1863  B. The Union controlled the entire Mississippi River five days later
 IV. Gettysburg Address- November 1863  A. Ceremony held to dedicate a cemetery  Speech took 2 minutes, said to have remade America
 V. Grant leads Union to victory  A. Lincoln appoints Grant to lead Union army  B. Grant appoints William Tecumseh Sherman to command division at the MS River
 Both men believe in Total War- important to also fight the civilian population  - They destroyed everything in their paths, as the strength of the people kept the war going (food, weapons, goods)
 VI. Election of 1864  Union victories leading up to election allowed Lincoln to be reelected
 VII. Confederate Surrender  A. Jefferson Davis abandoned Richmond, VA  Ordered it to be burned so Union could not take the city  B. Generals Lee and Grant meet to arrange a Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House, VA on April 9, 1865
