Sunflowers,1888
Vincent’s sunflowers are some of his
most famous paintings.
The artist Paul Gaugin came to live and
paint with Vincent in the little yellow house.
• This is a painting of
Vincent painting
sunflowers, painted
by his friend Paul
Gaugin in 1888.
Vincent and Paul
did not get along.
One day they had a
huge quarrel that
ended in Vincent
cutting off the lower
part of his ear in
frustration and
anger.
In some of his self-portraits you can even
see his bandaged ear.
Vincent created
dozens of self-
portraits.
Van Gogh's
self-portraits
show his face as
it appeared in
the mirror.
After his argument with Gaugin, Van Gogh
was taken to a mental hospital to recover.
• He was given
a room at the
hospital to
use as his
painting
studio.

Some paintings from this time show swirls of

famous.

one of his doctors.
• Portrait of Dr.
Gachet, 1890

around him.
Wheat Field with Crows, is one of his last
paintings. Its sad, haunting, feeling often causes
people to believe it was his last painting.

suffered from severe
mental illness his
entire life. On July 27,
1890,at age 37 he
took his own life.
This is his last self-
