man.
● He lives happily with his family.
● He has a wife, four sons and two
daughters.
● They live a cloistered and a genteel life.
● They were preparing for the marriage
of their eldest son George.
● The bride was Miss. Arabella the lovely
daughter of Wilmot of their
neighbourhood.
● Mr. Wilmot cancels
the engagement.
● The vicar offends him
in a philosophical
argument about
marriage.
● He loses his fortune
to a shady merchant
who proved to be a
thief.
● The family is forced to
move to a more humble
area.
● In the new area of their
dwelling the vicar works as
a curate and farmer.
● George was sent to
London who had been
studied in the Oxford with
an intention to support the
family.
● The new area of their dwelling is
comfortable and pastoral.
● The women in particular find difficult to
cope up with the lower level of fashion.
● The vicar befriends a handsome,
erudite, poor young man named Mr.
Burchell.
● The family thought their fortune may
change.
● As he anticipates a new social status he
was less pleases with Mr. Burchell’s
attention to Sophia.
● So, he doesn’t want to marry her a man
of no fortune.
● Burchell saves Sophia
from drowning.
● Sophia is attracted to
him.
● Meanwhile the family
hears a word from their
land lord Squire
Thornhill who is
reputed brat who lives
under the generosity of
his uncle.
● His uncle is Mr. William
Thornhill.
● Eventually the family
meets the much discussed
squire, who proves
charming, attractive and
amiable.
● Squire has an interest on
Olivia and the vicar forgets
his reservations.
● They lose their simple way of
living and they were living in
pride as the their vain hopes for
Olivia and the squire increases.
● But, the more they try to show
off, the more they were
embarrassed.
● The vicar and Moses were even
duped when they attempted to
sell the family horse inorder to
buy more fashionable.
● The Squire introduces the
daughters of the vicar to two
fashionable ladies who suggest
they might find position for the
girls in the city.
● The family was pleased, but Mr.
Burchell has written an
ambigous letter regarding the
reputation of the girls.
● This letter prevented the plan
to movement of the girls to
town.
● Deborah tries to prompt the squire into
proposing to Oliva by vaguely threatening to
marry the girl to a neighbour, Father
Williams.
● The Squire is jealous and upset with the
presence of the latter’s man he didn’t take
any action to propose Olivia.
● The family prepares to marry Olivia to the
farmer.
● But right before the wedding Olivia flee with
Squire Thornhill. This was a heartbreaking
blow to the family.
● By doing this Olivia had sacrificed her
reputation. Which was no small virtue in this
time. The vicar set out to save and forgive
her. He finds Squire at home.
● He suspects Mr. Burchell for the crime.
● The vicars journey and anxiety
are taxing and he falls ill while
he was away from home.
● He rests for three weeks at an
inn and head backs towards
home, meeting a travelling
acting company along the way.
● When they arrive at the next
town, he meets an intelligent
man who invites him for a
dinner party at his home.
● The vicar agrees and is
astonished by the man’s
mansion.
● He discovers that this man is
home butler, and the owner of
the house is Arabella’s uncle.
Mr. Arnold.
● Mr. Arnold shared the joy of
their reunion and the love of
Arabella for George is not
abated.
● There were rumours that Arabella is going to
get marry with Squire Thornhill.
● The vicar stays with the family for a few days.
In an amazing turn of event they found
George was acting in the acting companies
show.
● George reunites with his father and Arabella.
He tells them the many misadventures since
from his parting.
● His many missteps ended with him in
attempting to act and none of them yielded
much fortune.
● Along the way he had a reunited with his old
college friend- who turned out to be Squire
Thornhill.
● George reunites with his father and Arabella.
He tells them the many misadventures since
from his parting.
● The Squire arrives at the Arnold
house and was surprised to see
the vicar and his son.
● Noticing the renewed love
between George and Arabella
Squire procures a job for
George in West Indies.
● Since he has no money and no
one suspects Squires motives
George gladly departs.
● The vicar prepares to go home.
Along the way he stays in an
inn. There he finds Olivia.
● Olivia tells him that how the
Squire married her in a fake
ceremony and left her in
prostitution house.
● She escapes from there and
lives in this inn out of the mercy
of the innkeeper.
● The vicar brings back Olivia
home. But he makes her to stay
in a nearby inn.
● He does this because by the
time he can prepare his home
emotionally to accept Olivia.
● Unfortunately, when he arrives
home he sees that his house is
inflamed and to of his sons are
tramped inside.
● To save his sons he gets inside
the house and his hand is
severely flamed.
● By the light of this incident the
family is ready to forgive Olivia.
● The family tries to back to the
normal situation, even after
they hear the engagement
between Arabella and Squire
Thornhill.
● One day the Squire finds them outside and
the vicar insults him. The next day Squire
sends two of his man to collect the rent of the
vicars house.
● The vicar couldn’t pay the rent and he was
arrested. The family travel together to the
jail. Ladies stayed in a nearby inn where his
sons stayed in the cell with him. In the cell he
gets a new friend named Ephraim Jenkinson.
● Jenkinson was the man who swindled Moses
and vicar. The vicar forgives his sin. Now the
vicar tries to reform the prisoners.
● Eventually he wins their heart with his sermons
and kindness.
● By knowing all the stories which had happened
Jenkinson tells him that he will help him. They
both write a letter to William explaining how
the mans nephew wronged the family.
● Olivia’s and the vicars health
started to fade. But he was not
ready for a compromise with
Squire. But Olivia dies.
● After the death of Olivia vicar

for it because of the letter vicar
had written to his uncle.

Sophia to Burchell.
● Burchell keeps quiet until
Squire Thornhill comes. He
orders for a great feast. All

● With the blessing of Sir. William
the jailor gives two men to
Jenkinson to catch the criminal.
● Sir William gives some lectures
of fighting to George when he
understands who is George.
● When Thornhill arrives he
denies everything. The vicar
didn’t have any solid evidence
against Thornhill.
● Jenkinson arrives triumphantly,
and tells that the abduction of
Sophia was the plan Thornhill
inorder to seduce her.
● Arabella and Wilmot suddenly arrives the jail.
