What have you learned from your audiencefeedback?
Questionnaire:
In the initial research stages, I carried out a
questionnaire to tailor my main product and ancillary texts to
a specific target audience. It was created on a website called
‘survey monkey’. The website allowed me to create an interactive questionnaire which
would be more appealing to my mainstream audience. Survey monkey had a variety of
tools, was easy to use and embedded simply on to my blog. I thought it would be easier to
send out a digital questionnaire because it is easier to gather the information in to charts
but to be more efficient I also sent out a paper copy as I knew that some people did not
have access to the internet. After I had collected all my information I used a statistics
website to collate my information. From my research I found that: 39% were males and 61%
were female, the percentage of people who liked pop music was at 72% and 40% picked A
as their favourite album cover. It was important that I established the most popular music
genre in the beginning stages as this was the foundation
for all my products. Before conducting the questionnaire I
wasn’t able to specifically target my audience in terms of
age and gender. However the results from my
questionnaire meant that I was able to brainstorm a
variety of different song ideas. From this I was able to
deduce my final song idea. Not only was the audience
feedback from the questionnaire good for making
progress on my music
video choice but I based
by own digipak off the
final question.
Song choice:
In response to my brief in the beginning stages I had
to create a music video that was suitable for specific
audience. I chose to
create a song that had
not had too many
views because I
wanted my ideas to be
new. I initially wanted
to pick a song that had
no original music
video. However at a
later stage the artist
had released a video and it was too late to change my
ideas. From brainstorming different ideas I came to the conclusion to choose between Jorja
smith ‘beautiful little fools’ and Mabel ‘thinking of you’. Based on my audience feedback I
found that because ‘thinking of you’ was shorter it was much preferred and it meant that I
would have to less editing. For the reason I chose that song. After drafting my first music
video and conducting some audience feedback, one thing that came up was that the
footage was “repetitive” and “boring”. For this reason I found a remix of the original that
was faster paced and included a male artist. I then conducted a second draft of my music
video with the new song and from the audience feedback they said that it was much more
energetic and so they are more likely to watch it.
Initial drafts:
Magazine advert 1, 2 and 3 were linked to the same digipak images above. I had chosen to
create 3 different mock ups and based on my audience feedback I decided which one is best
for my product. The first one I included is based on typical conventions of magazine album
adverts. The artist has the same clothes as on the digipak because I wanted to create a
sense of familiarity for the audience and make it feel as though it is one product. When I
began researching my product my target said that they would like the use of the digipak on
the front cover so they would know what it looks like when they buy it. I tried to keep the
text minimalistic so that the artists face could be clearly seen as I am trying to emphasise
the personal connection between the audience and artist. Similarly I chose the main image
because she was looking directly into the camera which again enforces the idea that she is
talking directly to the audience. Based on my audience feedback they said that overall liked
the first advert the most. My audience particularly pointed out that the colours stood out
and would be easily recognisable if they were to look for it in stores. They also commented
on the fact it had 5 star recommendations from music institution which would make it more
likely for them to buy the product, not only this but, it is a typical convention on adverts. I
changed some aspects of my cover due to the negative feedback I got. Firstly one the main
concerns from my audience was that there was no social media links which means they
would not be able to find the product. They also said that it would be good to include the
record label so they knew what genre of music they buying into. I am also going to list some
of the places the music will be available for example, Spotify and amazon pictures. The
second advert was made using features of more modern conventions. I tried to make the
advert appear as if it is a Polaroid and as my audience is mainstream they often follow
things that are on trend so I thought they would be more attracted to this one. Based on my
audience feedback the main issue was that I had too much text so if I was going to use this
format I would change that. Similarly to my first mock up, the fact that I didn’t use social
media icons was issue, so this would also be included. When designing my third digipak I
tried to listen to my audience feedback and include different
features such as social media icons and the music labels logo so
people were aware of what kind of music my artist represented.
From evaluating all three forms of adverts I finally decided to go
with the first format because it is more conventional and when it
comes to my final evaluation I will be able to talk more about
where I got my inspiration from. I included features of the first and
third mock up and rearrange the text so it looks more fluid. The
text of the 3rd mock-up was also too big so this will be reduced on
my final product.
Music video:
I created several drafts for my music video and collated audience
feedback from that. Originally the feedback wasn’t great for the
first draft as my audience felt it didn’t look professional. Based on
this feedback I watched various premiere pro tutorials on YouTube
on how to create a professional music video. From this I
downloaded pre-sets that were not originally on premiere pro
which made my product look more effective. My feedback also
stated that there was discolouration on some on my footage so I re
filmed those specific clips.
Final products:
My audience overall like my main product and ancillary products as
they felt it represented a real media product.
