Lime
Lame is a calcium containing inorganic material composed
primarily of oxide and hydroxide.
Preparation of lime.
 once crushed in size the limestone.
 Than fed into kellin where it is calcined.
 Basically cooked at temperature is high about 2000
Fahrenheit.
 After this process the extreme heat cause the limestone to
chemical release co2.
 At the end result made a lime.
2
Setting of lime
The process of hardening of lime after it has been converted into paste form as
known as setting of lime.
Hardening of lime.
 Hardening of lime mortar is a gradual process.
 after the setting of mortar attains its strength progressively.
 The hardening of lime paste or mortar is caused by the absorption of
carbon from the air.
 The presence of excess water unites calcium hydroxide to form calcium
carbonate .
3
Application of lime
 Lime is used in the manufacturing of steel in order to remove the impurities.
 Soil stabilization for construction of road airfields and building lime in large
quantity.
 Lime slurry is used as mortar for masonry work and for plastering .
 Lime is used as an additive in asphalt which helps to improve the property
of cohesion.
 Use of lime
 Lime product provide a key for many essential process.
 Purifying drinking water.
 Making sugar.
 Cleaning gases from power station .
 For construction of building etc.
4
Characteristic of lime
 it is less brittle.
 It is white or greyish or greyish in color.
 It set slowly when mixed in water.
 It delays the construction.
 It possesses less strength.
 It help to reduce moister and improve the environment of building.
 Lime hardens slowly when mixed in producing mortar.
 It can not be used for important and heavy engineering structures.
 It is cheaper.
5
Characteristic of cement
 It is more brittle.
 It is greenish- grey in color.
 It set rapidly when mixed in water.
 No delay in construction as compared to lime.
 It possesses high strength.
 It can absorb water causing moisture to accumulate epically in the basement.
 The cement hardens quickly when mixed in a mortar.
 It can be used for important and heavy engineering structure.
 It is expensive.
