The government has ordered offshore energy firms to avoid "noisy" detonations when disposing of unexploded bombs on the seabed, in a bid to protect vulnerable marine life.

He said police called Army bomb disposal experts to assess the device and "safely dispose of it".

He was later taken to another location used for "the purposes of disposing dead animals".

"Deceased animals should be disposed of in a way that prevents other pets or wildlife being able to access remains," the statement added.

But the regulation has met with stiff opposition among growers and local officials who contend costlier alternatives for disposing of waste impose a burden on California farmers and put them at a competitive disadvantage.
