"I think back then it was the rawness, the naturalness of ourselves," he says.

She is now unable to think back to her childhood with the man she calls Dominique, only occasionally slipping back into the habit of referring to him as her father.

"When I think back to how all of this started, it all came from a very dark place," she said.

Over those years, I thought back a lot to that trip to Oklahoma City and the naivete and anxiety that started this project.
