Includes purpose of P596
[edit]10 jun 2013 18:42 Sven Manguard (Overleg | bijdragen) heeft de pagina Property:P596 verwijderd (RfD: Appears to be redundant to direction (P560), which doesn't restrict direction to compass directions (allowing things like up, down, left, etc.)) – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 139.63.60.122 (talk • contribs) at 12:41, 2 July 2013 (UTC).
Difference from p654?
[edit]direction relative to location (P654) used as qual on shares border with (P47). But haven't they the same sence with topic?--Avatar6 (talk) 17:40, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- P654 (direction relative to location) means the direction relative to the object, while P560 (direction) means the direction of the object relative to the subject. For example, the United States (subject) "shares border with" (P47) Mexico (object), and P47 in this case should have qualifiers "P654 north" and "P560 south". This distinction may be confusing. I have edited descriptions of P654 and P560 for clarification, and corrected United States of America (Q30), Canada (Q16), et al.. --Neo-Jay (talk) 14:29, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
- I believe this explanation is incorrect. See my post below where I question whether direction (P560) is appropriate as a qualifier for shares border with (P47) at all.
- Additionally, see my posts on the Property talk:P654 and Property talk:P47 pages about the initial intent of direction relative to location (P654) from the property proposal. I believe the explanation here results in the cardinal directions being reversed from the way the property proposal outlines it. Lorenmaxwell (talk) 17:23, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
Usage with shares border with (P47)?
[edit]Aside from the topic above, this is additionally confusing to me because an alias of the property is "facing" rather than a relative direction.
Just as a baseline, the different ways "direction" could be interpreted (off the top of my head):
- the London Underground Central line (Q205355) "runs" east to west from Epping (Q1347650) to West Ruislip station (Q801602) (this is the correct usage)
- the Statue of Liberty (Q9202) "faces" southeast (this is an incorrect usage, use orientation (P7469) instead)
- North Korea (Q423) "is located" north of South Korea (Q884) (this is an incorrect usage, use direction relative to location (P654) instead)
When I read the description "a directional identifier to distinguish between multiple instances of a property (like the north and south ends of a linear feature, the next item of a set to the west or east, etc.)", it is not apparent to me this would apply to shares border with (P47).
I don't necessarily view geographic locations (i.e., countries, states, counties, etc.), as "multiple instances of a property" or "items in a set" in the same way that terminals on the Central Line are in a set, although I suppose I could be convinced otherwise.
My main questions are (answers updated by myself after doing some research on the original property proposals):
is "facing" a correct alias for this? It does not seem it's being used in that way. The usage seems to be overwhelmingly terminus (P559) and terminus location (P609). I recommend changing it to something like "cardinal direction of the ends of a linear feature or of directionally sequenced items in a set".- (update 31 Oct 2024) No, the original property proposal clearly does NOT refer to facing (which is orientation (P7469)). I've updated the description to match the discussion under the property proposal.
- should this be used primarily for items like the Central line (Q205355), where the terminus (P559) should have the value Epping (Q1347650) with a direction (P560) qualifier of east (Q684)?
- (update 31 Oct 2024) Yes, this is specifically the usage the property proposal outlines, although it refers to Glasgow Subway (Q506290) instead of the London Underground (Q20075). It also appears to be the primary usage of the property on Wikidata.
- should direction (P560) be disallowed for shares border with (P47)?
- (update 31 Oct 2024) I think so, although that's more of a discussion under shares border with (P47) than here. I'll keep the discussion over there.
should an explicit "direction relative to subject" property be created to serve as a counter property to direction relative to location (P654)? Also, "direction relative to subject" is much more intuitive to me than "direction relative to location" since I'm not sure whether the "location" is the country I am working on or the one it shares a border with, whereas "subject" and "object" are much clearer.- (update 31 Oct 2024) No, after researching the property proposal for direction relative to location (P654), that property already captures this
Anyway, looking for some thoughts from others familiar with how this is being used.
- (update 31 Oct 2024) I've made the updates outlined above.
I'm not sure that I don't have a couple of dozen of my own recent edits I need to undo because of the confusion :\
