Welcome to my user page. I'm a programmer / data curator from the Netherlands. Within the Wiki projects, I'm mainly active on Wikidata, where I work on entities like streets, buildings, artists, historical persons and exhibitions.

Work for GLAM institutions

[edit]

As a freelancer, I do paid linked data projects for GLAM institutions in which I connect entities within collection data with external identifiers in authority sets like AAT or RKDartists, and with Wikidata items as well. During these projects I try to add or edit Wikidata items whenever possible.

Applications

[edit]

It can be difficult to get an overview of (the completeness) of Wikidata items within a certain field, and I try to make (small) applications on the Wikidata Query Service to show what's there. Some examples:

  • Dutch Streets per Municipality shows items for streets within every Dutch municipality, colored by creation date and sized smaller if the 'named after' property is missing.
  • Rotterdams Publiek sketches the (historical) cultural landscape of Rotterdam and runs almost entirely on sparql endpoints. The plekken page lists all cinemas, theatres, museums, libraries, etc. that existed in te city - according to Wikidata, the Time Machine page shows, among other things, exhibitions in Museum Boijmans for any given year.
  • Painted Planet plots places depicted on landscape paintings within any given country on the map and it lets you browse through these paintings.

Editathons

[edit]

Every now and then I participate in an editathon. Recently I helped out with an editathon in music venue Baroeg, creating items for bands that played there during its forty years of existence. That same evening all participants were blocked (unjustly as was recognized within a few days) on suspicion of sock puppetry. Bandnames like 'Butt plug', 'Denial of God' and 'Debiele Eenheid' might have alerted moderators.
