Population / Census

Many thanks for your hard work on the population of Wales within each community, in the latest census! As we say in Welsh (my mother tongue): Diolch yn fawr!

Secondly, I have a request, but will not be offended if you're too busy: could you add the number of Welsh speakers, the percentage of those who call themselves 'Welsh' or 'Welsh and British' and the number in/out of work? With this info I could create automated tables (from WD) of each community area on the cy-wiki. But, as I say, you have other more pressing stuff, I'm sure! Diolch yn fawr! Language: We can only import data that there are Wikidata fields for. See the list of "related properties" for Property:P1082 (population). I imported households and male/female population data, because that's what Wikidata's population property has fields for. If you want additional fields added, you'll need to look into those to see if there's anything suitable already in the structure, or if it needs adding.

Rank: I imported the data with OpenRefine which does not currently have the ability to set the preferred rank (otherwise I would have set it), therefore you will need to set this manually for those places that have multiple population entries (or find another tool that does have the functionality). That said, it should be possible (even in Wikipedia templates) to sort the entries by date as well as preference, to get the most recent entry.

Yes, new fields would be necessary, but as they're on the census, it would be hard to refuse.

The new population period is fed into our WD driven Infobox, as you know; we have 950 + communities, so changing them to preferred rank now is out of the question. As they stand, with more than one population, they look bad. It will take hours to change the code so that the infobox only show the most recent entry. There goes my weekend. Perhaps a discussion with interested parties, before uploading would be good in the future. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 17:23, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
