Motivation
[edit]This is a reboot of Wikidata:Property proposal/expansion.
an expansion pack (expansion set, supplement, or simply expansion) is an addition to an existing role-playing game, tabletop game, video game or collectible card game
This property would model the relationship between the expansion pack and the thus expanded game.
Current practice
[edit]- depends on software (P1547)
- This was the conclusion of Wikidata:Property proposal/expansion, and has some usage with 38 video game (Q7889). However, this does not work for tabletop or board game expansions, which are not software nor depend on any.
- (In the case of video games, using depends on software (P1547) could be confusing. Video games do depend on underlying software, the first of which being already captured by software engine (P408) but may also be APIs (such as DirectX (Q188695)) or libraries (eg Simple DirectMedia Layer (Q727439)) or embarked compatibility layers (such as DOSBox (Q479783)).
- part of (P361)
- This is used in the wild, but in so many different contexts to make things very muddy: it models games "part of" a compilation , extras (eg soundtrack albums) "part of" a video game special edition, a game "part of" a series, a fictional universe or a media franchise − some of these relationships should be moved to the relevant properties (part of the series (P179), takes place in fictional universe (P1434), media franchise (P8345)) but the point still stands.
- Formally, the relationship is wrong because the various expansions do not combine to make the original game, which in most (all?) cases existed before there were any expansions.
- Xinstance of (P31)expansion pack (Q209163)
of (P642)<game> - (for example World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Q715719)instance of (P31)expansion pack (Q209163)
of (P642)World of Warcraft (Q131007) - This feels to me like a nightmare to query, and a cop-out from properly modeling the relationship.
- based on (P144)
- There is some usage of it² ; however this property is very broad (hence how it’s subproperty of references work, tradition or theory (P8371)).
- More often that not it is more about adaptations. One can easily imagine an expansion pack which is also an adaptation of another work. I could not find a smashing example, but Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption (Q1300773) comes close, being an expansion to Star Wars: Empire at War (Q55315) and having events based on the original Star-Wars trilogy. I could not find it, but I’m sure there must somewhere a Star Wars video game expansion which adapts one of the expanded universe novels.
- It is also already used to capture relationships like remake (Q31235) (and in the case of video games, video game remaster (Q65963104))
Other relevant properties
[edit]- plot expanded in (P5940)
- In the case of narrative media (might be less true for board games?) there will be some overlap (in an inverted way), as expansions often expand the plot of the base game.
- mod of (P7075)
- This only applies for video game (Q7889) ; and in which case video game mod (Q865493) is a somewhat related but very distinct concept.
Elsewhere
[edit]- This relationship is also defined in the paper Relationships among video games: Existing standards and new definitions (Q50180192) (as
isExpansionOf
) - this relationship also exists in the following databases:
- Internet Game Database (Q20056333) − See eg Brood War: “StarCraft: Brood War is an Expansion for StarCraft” and “Required Game: StarCraft”
- Online Games-Datenbank (Q60315954) − See eg Brood War: “Dieser Titel ist ein Addon zu: StarCraft (1998)”
- BoardGameGeek (Q887528) − See eg Catan: Cities & Knights: “Expansion for: Catan”

Notes
[edit]- ¹ Use of depends on software (P1547): Try it!
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?game ?gameLabel WHERE { SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". } ?item wdt:P1547 ?game. ?game wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q7889. }
- ² Use of based on (P144) : Try it!
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?based_on ?based_onLabel WHERE { SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". } ?item (wdt:P31/(wdt:P279*)) wd:Q209163. ?item wdt:P144 ?based_on. }
