This study aimed to validate a questionnaire, originally developed in Belgium, designed to evaluate three dimensions (self-efficacy, interest, and effort) of intrinsic motivation for teaching for a different national population. The sample consisted of 616 academics working in public higher education institutions in Portugal. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted and internal consistency of items analyzed. The results show that the original dimensionality of the construct is confirmed in the Portuguese teachers’ sample. Motivation for teaching in the Portuguese context is primarily explained by the following factors: personal efficacy, interest in the task, and effort placed on teaching responsibilities.

The team consists of 10 researchers from six Universities. Student engagement in schools is a multidimensional construct that unites affective, behavioural, and cognitive dimensions of student adaptation in the school and has influence on students’outcomes. The team of researchers conceptualized two major studies, a differential study to analyze the relations between SES and contextual factors, personal factors, student’s outcomes, and a quasi-experimental study to analyze the effects on SES of a specific intervention programmes. In study 1, the sample size is around 600 students (150 6th graders, 150 7th graders, 150 9th graders, and 150 10th graders). We shall focus on years of school transition, with rural and urban populations, on different regions of the country, and on students with different family background. We shall conduct questionnaires with national and international scales. The study 2 will involve students in 7th and 9th grade, from four classes, two of the experimental group and two of the control group. Patterns of verbal communication between a teacher and students can influence the classroom environment and SES. This model of communication would result in more effective student management and more time on-task for learning.

Bullying is the intentional repeated aggression directed at a target individual. There is substantial evidence of the negative psychological and health outcomes associated with bullying. It occurs very frequently, especially in adolescence, and action is needed to lessen its causes and alleviate its consequences. Research has shown that behavior problems usually interact with other risk and protection factors, as well as with factors of etiological development. This book discusses the prevalence, psychological impacts and intervention strategies of bullying.

Objective: To study how the relationships between SES and victimization behaviors vary throughout the adolescence years of schooling is the aim of the present study. Method: The sample consisted of 685 students from different regions of the country, of both sexes, divided by grade (6th, 7th, 9th and 10th). Data were collected in classroom context through a survey that included items from the "Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale" and the questionnaire "Student's Engagement in School - A Four Dimensional Scale (SES-4DS)", which includes a cognitive, an affective, a behavioral and an agentic dimension (Veiga, 2013). Results: The results from the analysis of engagement variance (anova two-way 2x3), according to grade (6th and 7th versus 9th and 10th grades) and peer victimization (low, medium and high), allowed to find a decrease throughout schooling years, either in SES, as in peer victimization behaviors (PVB); the significant effects of the interaction of the variables PV and grade emerged only in the cognitive and behavioral dimensions, and were due to a larger decrease in such dimensions, in the group with higher PVB, throughout the years. Conclusions: results are considered within the context of social-cognitive perspective of development; and suggest further deeper analyses, in addition to activation measures of variables such as students' engagement in school, as a form to diminish peer victimization conducts.

Nessas atividades, as crianças serão desafiadas a desempenhar diferentes papéis, sob a premissa “EU SOU…”

A investigação apresenta dados controversos.

However, there has been a lack of engagement assessment instrument, pertaining psychometric qualities. Objective: This paper presents the Portuguese adaptation of the “Student’s Engagement in School International Scale” (SESIS), drawn up from a12 countries international study (Lam et al., 2012; Lam et al., in press). Method: Psychometric properties of this scale were examined with data from 685 students from different grades (6th, 7th, 9th and 10th), from both sexes, and different regions of the country. Results: Factorial analysis of the results, with varimax rotation, lead to three different factors which explain 50.88% of the variance. The scale integrates the original 33 items, and cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions. For the external validity study, the relationship between student’s engagement in school results and other school variables — academic performance, self-concept — was considered, and significant relations were observed, as expected. Conclusion: The data presented highlights the qualities of SESIS, as well as its usefulness for research purposes. Suggestion: It is suggested the investigation of the extension of SESIS’s three-dimensionality, in future studies Keywords: Innovation, technology, research projects

The main goal of the scales is to help teachers to deal with different aspects of learning, in order to facilitate teaching as a diversified task. One of the scales is focused on the Academic domain. In other words, it is conceptually close to areas or disciplines of the official education programs. The other one is focused on the Pro-Academic domain. It is linked with non intellectual variables that can interfere with the school achievement. Both instruments are supported by a multidimensional approach and its subject is about students’ potentialities, interests, concerns and difficulties. In this article, we point out procedures that held the definition of the dimensions in each scale and results of validation studies, mainly of internal consistency.

Method: Psychometric properties of this scale were examined with data from 685 students from
different grades (6th, 7th, 9th and 10th), from both sexes, and different regions of the country.
Results: Factorial analysis of the results, with varimax rotation, lead to three different factors which
explain 50.88% of the variance. The scale integrates the original 33 items, and cognitive, affective and
behavioural dimensions. For the external validity study, the relationship between student’s
engagement in school results and other school variables — academic performance, self-concept —
was considered, and significant relations were observed, as expected. Conclusion: The data presented highlights the qualities of SESIS, as well as its usefulness for research purposes.
Suggestion: It is suggested the investigation of the extension of SESIS’s three-dimensionality, in future studies
