Authors: Prof. Dr. Ige Pirnar
Purpose: The aim of this chapter is to analyse the aims & functions of partnerships and strategic alliances in the tourism industry by grouping them under sub categories consisting of homogeneous characteristics. The chapter illustrates this issue by presenting a case study on Izmir Convention and Visitors Bureau which is composed of many public and private organizations, thus including a complex structured PPP (public-private partnership) member called IZTAV (Foundation of Tourism Presentation of Izmir.
Design/methodology/approach: A literature review with brief cases and examples on the topic of partnerships and alliances in tourism is followed by one case study from Izmir’s DMO (destination management organization).
Findings: When aims of partnerships and strategic alliances in tourism are analysed, it becomes clear that it is important to separate it under two sub-groups for efficient and meaningful analysis. The separation may be as; business oriented partnerships and destination oriented partnerships, since their aims and focused resources are quite unique and different from each other. Also, the functions of partnerships and strategic alliances in tourism industry may be sub-grouped under 4 different categories.
Research limitations/implications: Time limit is being the first constraint for the data gathering process; it leads to a limited number of samples for the analysis. Also, the analysis is based primarily on secondary data, where primary data usage and application of a quantitative research on the same topic and problem statement is recommended for further studies.
Practical implications: Strategic partnering in tourism and destination companies/organizations should be innovative and open in their mutual agreements and applications. PPPs and clusters may be effective methods yielding to synergy in strategic partnerships and alliances.
Originality/value: The analysis of partnerships and strategic alliances as a means for effective marketing and innovative management applications in tourism industry.
Category: Conceptual paper/case study
Keywords: Strategic partnerships, Strategic alliances, tourism industry, PPP (public-private partnership), Clusters in tourism, DMO.

It has been very hard to catch up with work, family, and social life since most of the people have to work due to economical burdens and the problems that arise day to day. The problems and the burdens urge people to take care of their health and level of stress so that tourism seems to be one of the most effective tools to keep away from the daily conflicts. This popular rise also brought new concepts and definitions to the literature which underlines the importance of life in terms of “quality” such as quality-of-life. However, it is evident that the interest of individuals in tourism caught the interests of the entrepreneurs, the interest of entrepreneurs accelerated the rivalry, and the rivalry brought the challenging and severe competition in several tourism destinations. This competitiveness not only caused a high increase in terms of revenues and infrastructural developments in destinations but also it caused remaining negative effects which seemed to be affecting the quality-of-life. This chapter highlights the interaction between the competitiveness of the tourism destinations and the quality-of-life. The importance of destination management and marketing are also underlined with regard to close relationship between these two phenomena.

Phenomenon of" social entrepreneurship" has emerged as a follow up concept of entrepreneurship, as a critical issue in the context of both improvement and wellbeing of societies. Social entrepreneurship focuses on social problems rather than profit maximization and is especially important for gastronomy tourism due to the social local benefits as cultural integration and employment it brings. In order to understand the promising research areas and explore the research gap in the gastronomical social entrepreneurship applications, bibliometric analysis is chosen since studies are limited in the gastronomy tourism as well as social entrepreneurship. The research in subject area consisted on keywords that are used as search items for articles title section to select articles that are more accurate for the aim of the research. The analysis shows that there are 20 articles with the combination of related key word variations. When the methodologies of the related articles is analyzed, it is understood that qualitative research with multiple and comparative case study is chosen for almost all the related articles. The reason might be due to the characteristics of the research topic and novelty, thus, rarity of true to life gastronomical social innovation applications. This study is expected to guide future studies by providing general overview of the studies and the research gap in social entrepreneurship and gastronomy tourism.

Literature review is followed by a qualitative research where expert information on the research topic is collected. Judgmental sampling is used to identify experts’ views where in-depth semi-structured interviews are conducted with 12 hotel managers in Izmir city. The soft innovation hotel application areas taken into consideration are: lobby and reception, rooms, restaurant, bar and ballroom areas, meeting and congress halls, SPA and pools, gardens and landscape and other exterior hotel architecture.
Findings The findings of the research reveal the sample hotel managers’ views as all the soft innovation applications are important for all city hotels regardless of their category, meaning that soft innovation may lead to better marketing results. Thus, according to hotel managers, soft innovation offerings have a potential for better customer satisfaction as positive feedback. However, the vitality degree among components changes according to the hotel’s category. For boutique hotels the most important component is found to be the decoration of the hotel, whereas for 4 stars hotels it is light and for 5 stars hotels it is scent.
Research limitations/implications The results of this study give relatively limited information because only managers’ point of view are shown. In the research, customers’ perceptions on soft innovation based interviews with the top management of the hotels studied takes place, indicating which may not be the case to reflect the real perception of customers. Therefore, for further researches, it is recommended for the other researches to take into consideration of customers’ point of views as well. Also, time limitation, sample size and application of only qualitative research may be stated as the limitations for this study. Quantitative research applies to customers on the same topic and problem statement is recommended for further studies related to city hotels’ soft innovation applications.
Practical implications Motivation of this study is to understand how soft innovation can change hotels’ atmosphere and make it more attractive from the managers’ perceptions. According to hotel managers’ views, soft innovation applications may lead to higher customer satisfaction, but the level of investment among the components may change according to the city hotel’s category. Research implications indicate that hotel managers may optimize the effectiveness of their soft innovation efforts by taking into consideration their hotel type, application areas and innovation category as decoration, color, scent, sound and light. According to hotel managers, decoration-related soft innovation is more important to boutique hotels, lighting-related soft innovation is an effective investment for 4 stars hotels and scent-related soft innovation is a suitable investment for 5 stars hotels.
Originality/value The originality of the study lies in the analysis of the components of soft innovation as a means for effective city hotel marketing and innovative management applications. Though it is a very suitable industry for implementation, improvement and development, there are limited studies on soft innovation applications in the hotel industry.

Thus by focusing on these differences, the study tries to recognize and distinguish the specific characteristics of tourism and hospitality industry entrepreneurship process, thus tries further, to group them under sub categories of homogeneous characteristics for effective and efficient management applications. In order to forecast the future ones, the paper also covers the real entrepreneurial processes in hospitality and tourism industry whch lead to new tourism types and applications like: local gastronomy tourism, rural adventure tourism specific to local attractions, sustainable and regional eco-tourism packages, local dark tourism examples, volunteer tourism types and applications of specific local events, etc. The study is a conceptual paper composed of a comprehensive literature review with brief examples and real life example on the topic of entrepreneurship process in hospitality and tourism. Originality and value of the paper lies in the area of the entrepreneurship process in tourism and hospitality industry as a means for innovation of new tourism products, effective marketing, efficient communication and creative small and medium sized enterprises (SME) applications in the industry. It is understood that tourism is one of the economic sectors in which a great degree of entrepreneurship involvement is needed due to characteristics of the industry as; high (SME) proportion within, motive, goal and values, attitudes, strategies and business applications. Tourism industry entrepreneurs differ from other industries’ entrepreneurs, and processes are accepted as a form of consumption rather than production. Also it is realized that the tourism entrepreneurship process is very vulnerable to rapid change in tourist behavior, tourist preferences and industry trends. Yet, it is also understood that tourism entrepreneurs seem to be highly motivated by life-style, quality of life (QOL) issues, locational preferences and other non-economic motives which are not common in general business entrepreneurs whose main motive seem to be profit maximization and financial independence.

with high level of income. According to international tourism indicators, European Union is the
world’s biggest tourism market with the 50% - 55% market share. Thus, tourism plays a vital role
for EU and it accounts for 5.5% of the Union’s GNP.
European Union has recognized tourism’s role in creating new jobs and regional
development until 1990’s, however, EU did not follow a sectoral approach. EU has tried to
promote tourism with transport, social policy, environment, taxation, education, competitiveness,
government subsidies, consumer protection, regional development, employment policy, research
and statistics, SMEs and inception of the Single Market, although it hasn’t set up any tourism
policy on union level. However, in the beginning of 90’s, with the pressure of institutional
organizations, EU has started to follow a sectoral approach. The European Commission, the
Council, the European Parliament play an important role in tourism activity.
As an EU candidate country, EU’s tourism policy is closely related with Turkey. Moreover,
European Union countries are the largest market for Turkey. Accession process and economic
factors affect Turkey’s tourism policy and legislation. Thus, Turkey has to harmonise its national
tourism policy and legislation with the EU.
EU’s tourism policy is not obligatory and it is run by sub commission and committees which
are related with tourism. Subjects may be divided into five categories:
• Knowledge
• Education
• Quality
• Sustainable Development
• New Technologies
As a result, EU does not have an obligatory tourism policy in a legal manner. On the other
hand, regulation, decision, directive and recommendations on tourism largely take part in EU
acquisition and they will form new obligations on Turkish tourism sector. Turkey’s cohesion to
EU’s consumer protection, information technology, environment and sustainable development
policies, also will facilitate cohesion of Turkey’s tourism sector to Union’s tourism sector.
Consequently, in this paper, European Union’s tourism policy has been generally examined
and the progresses have been arranged in order chronologically. By researching EU tourism
policy, relations with other policies, factors influencing demand for tourism and the situation of
Turkish tourism in the accession process will be investigated with sub sectors. According to
analysis results, suggestions will be made.

UNESCO defines culture tourism as “to create a discerning type of tourism that takes account of other people’s cultures” (UNESCO, 2005). Indeed culture and heritage tourism has been gaining importance recently not only for its’ economic gains but due to more sustainable approaches. As rural and regional economies go through difficult times of change, it may seem to some local communities that heritage can help in terms of economical gains. When what is old and valued in the community can no longer serve its original function, surely it can still attract funding and tourism as a part of cultural heritage. It is a well known fact that a natural link exists between cultural heritage tourism and regional development. Regional development is a key factor which contributes to economic welfare of the host country. The development and application of a system assessing the tourism potential of cultural and heritage assets including cultural, physical, product and experiential values is vital for the sustainability of the tourism attractions. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether there is a link between cultural and heritage tourism and regional development. Research method was identified as a qualitative technique – interview method-. The population consisted of the members of the governmental bodies as well as leading representatives of the tourism sector. The practical implication of this study is pointing out the possible policies and necessity of cooperation between government and private sector in Izmir, being the most populated and the most industrialized city, which plays a great role in the development of the Aegean Region. Especially, when cooperated with image and brand management, it helps destinations to stand out from today's severe crowd of competition. The successful and efficient destination management companies usually play a major role in marketing their destinations, but there exists a conflict in literature on the level of involvement in related marketing activities. Though managing an autonomous organization having its' own budget and freedom in decision making seems to be the best solution to meet the rapidly changing trends and needs of global tourists, it needs to be analyzed within the organizations' managerial level. The aim of this article is to determine the perspectives of DMO managers from the most important two destinations in Turkey, which is a very popular country that is usually in the first 10 in the international tourism market. The destinations chosen are Istanbul and Izmir, which by using destination management within the last 10 years were able to become popular global brands in the world market by increasing their share rapidly.

It seems that one of the ways to stand out from the crowd is differentiation by marketing and quality management tools thus leading to higher levels of customer satisfaction. Since the satisfaction levels of customers usually vary from one hotel department’s services to the other department’s services, it is important for hotel management to realize which department is obtaining the highest level of customer satisfaction and how it achieves it. The results may be applicable to the other departments’ services, which may lead other departments to higher levels also by benchmarking and other applicable strategies. The aim of this study is to discuss and make a preliminary analysis on the aspects of customer satisfaction regarding the services provided by the hotel’s departmental organization

The case study consists of 4 and 5 star luxury hotels in Izmir and their marketing approach to this special segment. The last part of the research concludes comments on findings and suggestions.
The aim of this original study is to make a preliminary study on affluent marketing applications of 4 and 5 star hotels in Izmir and to discuss and analyze the aspects of affluent marketing applications directed to the luxury tourism segment.

Taking the Aegean Region in consideration, it used to be an important destination of Turkish tourism though it has been losing popularity to Antalya and Istanbul. It could be said that the long-term competitiveness of the Aegean Regions’ tourism as a global tourist destination may depend on product innovation and improving access to high value niche when the resources and potentials of the region are taken into consideration, the agri-tourism seems to be the innovative product which is very suitable for the region. The aim of this original study is to make a preliminary qualitative analysis of Aegean Region which has a high potential for sub segments of tourism thus seems to decline in tourism revenues within the past years due to not targeting special interest tourism types like agri-tourism.
In order to collect data on the basic considerations and idea patters of public authorities and leading representatives of the Aegean Region tourism sector, a qualitative research method was chosen for the study. The region has lots of popular tourism destinations and natural attractions for domestic and foreign tourists. The region is also second important tourism destination of the country in terms of number of foreign visitors. Therefore it was considered that the opinions of public authorities and private sector representatives to develop alternative types of tourism to provide sustainability in the region.

These trends include changes in the type of consumer profiles which indeed resulted in a new type of consumer which is briefly called the new tourist. The new tourist is a new type of consumer in tourism industry who is more demanding, more sophisticated and educated than before. They are highly increasing in numbers. The term new applies since it is quite different to satisfy this type of consumer. Due to his fact, it seems that the traditional marketing strategies which were used by hospitality establishments would not be proper to apply to nor efficient for this needs of this growing segment.
The aim of the study is to research the adaptation patterns of hospitality enterprises in Izmir since the long term success truly depends on adapting new strategies for marketing and managing which can comply with the changes in trends and tourism as well as the needs of the new tourist profile. The article consists of two main parts, where the first part covers a brief literature review on the trends in tourism and the new tourism profile and their demand patterns. The second part is about the field research, where hotels in Turkey were taken as a population and their marketing strategies are examined in the way that how they react and adapt to these changes in the demand side. The last part of the research is the conclusion part where comments on findings and suggestions are presented.

A number of factors like legislation, conscious consumers and market situations influenced this issues. There are numerous empirical evidences that have shown that employee job satisfaction is a direct related factor in service quality improvement and customer satisfaction. Extensive quantitative research investigated relationships between service quality and customer satisfaction. However there is little qualitative evidence from employees’ point of view on service quality improvement and customer satisfaction. In this study a large scale food processing company’s high level employees were asked to express their opinions on service quality and customer satisfaction. Their answers were analyzed using qualitative techniques and results have been interpreted to help managers in improving their operations. This is an original study which attempts to make a preliminary SWOT analysis of health tourism in Izmir which is considered as a very suitable type for the regions’ resources. In addition applicable strategies are predicted for each of the different conditions (like. S/O, W/O, S/T and W/T strategies).

The data shows that its development had been at an increasing speed and the potential of growth is still very high. For countries like Turkey which are named “developing countries” tourism is top-priority issue for its economic prosperity and welfare generation potential. In order to attract more tourists and foreign investments, e-tourism represents a great value for its low setup costs and ability to reach an audience worldwide. Main objective of the study is to determine the role of electronic commerce in the field of hospitality, namely accommodation, as a strategic management tool, why and how it is applied. Study will consist of two parts, first part being literature review highlighting the usage of e-tourism as a strategic management tool where as the second part will consist of qualitative research – interview method covering the 4 and 5 star hotels in Izmir and the neighbor regions. The key objective of this research has been to examine the e-tourism applications in hospitality industry, as a sector that is highly adapting e-trade as a strategic management and marketing tool. In particular the research examines the level of information technology diffusion in hospitality organizations, namely 4 and 5 star hotels in Izmir. The reason for 4 and 5 star selection is because they are the hotels which are more open to adapt new technology as a strategic management tool. Results indicate that Izmir hotels are very open to e-tourism and many of them have high increase rates in registration. Also, it appears that there is a great potential for further e-tourism applications in hospitality in strategic manners.
The paper is a literature review, which consists of marketing strategies applicable to logistics ... more The paper is a literature review, which consists of marketing strategies applicable to logistics companies and the trends for the future. Namely, customer-centered value (chain) management, logistics service quality (LSQ), innovation, positioning, consolidation, alliances and partnership are the issues that needed to be handled by special attention since changes in the business environment may affect the way they are and. In the future, though, trends show that value added activities will be dictated by the customer, therefore, these activities may be truly customized for each customer (relationship marketing). Also, consolidation of the logistics outsourcing industry through mergers and acquisitions has been a way for growth for many large 3PLs. LSQ may be a way to overcome problems of diverse regulations across borders, longer lead times and costs of international logistics services, since they may use it for global market segmentation.
Another issue is to recognize the forces of change and adapt it, which came as an important result in all the empirical studies related to trends in the marketing for logistics. Marketers of logistics firms must be flexible enough to adapt quickly to the ever-changing customer demands.
Using a global data model means relying on a single source of information, which is a topic of tomorrow, where logistic firms reports’ will be accurate and they’ll have most up-to- date customer information. Need for integration is also an issue.
There are some issues that will stay the same though. For example, the design of logistics firms will be a key factor and competing on cycle time, cost and quality will remain as important issues. Also, benchmarking practices for logisticians will remain a topic to consider. Higher customer expectations will force service providers to be able to respond quickly and improve service levels.

UNESCO defines culture tourism as " to create a discerning type of tourism that takes account of other people's cultures " (UNESCO, 2005). Indeed culture and heritage tourism has been gaining importance recently not only for its' economic gains but due to more sustainable approaches.

The first part is related to a detailed literature review on the soft innovation components as color, sound, light, scent and decoration.
Findings
The findings of the research reveal the sample hotel managers’ views as all the soft innovation applications are important for all city hotels regardless of their category, meaning that soft innovation may lead to better marketing results.
Research limitations/implications
The results of this study give relatively limited information because only managers’ point of view are shown.
Practical implications
Motivation of this study is to understand how soft innovation can change hotels’ atmosphere and make it more attractive from the managers’ perceptions.
Originality/value
The originality of the study lies in the analysis of the components of soft innovation as a means for effective city hotel marketing and innovative management applications. Though it is a very suitable industry for implementation, improvement and development, there are limited studies on soft innovation applications in the hotel industry.

Hospitality industry is one of the most profitable industries with a high potential for increase, thus being a hospitality manager is one of the most trendy and prestigıous jobs of today. It is also a challenging job since, being an effective one is quite complex due to recorded industrial higher heart burn effects, rapid industrial changes in demand, constant trends and severe industrial competition.
Due to its’ specific, yet, challenging and ever changing characteristics of this job title, it is important to realize and accomplish the necessities of being an effective and successful hotel manager. Due to this fact, the study emphasizes on necessities of effective hotel management from the perspective of strategic hotel managers applications and point of views on the topic, trying to further improve the topic with their suggestions. The study consists of two parts; a theoretical background to support the practical research conducted by a qualitative research method with the scope consisting of 4 and 5 star hotel managers of Izmir destination.

with high level of income.

RESEARCH QUESTION
This research is questioning; “whether Izmir has potential for affluent tourism and if the luxury hotels are utilizing this segment” and if not “why”.
In order to collect data on the basic considerations and idea patters of public authorities and leading representatives of the Aegean Region tourism sector, a qualitative research method was chosen for the study. service businesses due to fierce competition in the global market. A number of factors like
legislation, conscious consumers and market situations influenced this issues. There are numerous
empirical evidences that have shown that employee job satisfaction is a direct related factor in
service quality improvement and customer satisfaction. Extensive quantitative research
investigated relationships between service quality and customer satisfaction. However there is
little qualitative evidence from employees’ point of view on service quality improvement and
customer satisfaction. In this study a large scale food processing company’s high level employees
were asked to express their opinions on service quality and customer satisfaction. Their answers
were analyzed using qualitative techniques and results have been interpreted to help managers in
improving their operations.

SPA and wellness, aged-tourism, handicapped-tourism,and sports tourism is one of the fastest
growing sub-sectors of the international tourism industry, since it has a constant annual
increase of 20% with a considerable demand potential. This is an original study which
attempts to make a preliminary SWOT analysis of health tourism in Izmir which is considered
as a very suitable type for the regions’ resources. In addition applicable strategies are
predicted for each of the different conditions (like. S/O, W/O, S/T and W/T strategies).
