（ＣＮＮ） 米中西部から北東部、南東部の広い範囲に、記録的な大寒波が襲来している。ＣＮＮの気象専門家によれば、この現象を理解するうえで重要なキーワードは「極渦」と「北極振動」だ。 極渦は文字通り、北極と南極の上空で反時計回りに渦巻くジェット気流だ。通常はこの流れが、寒気を極に閉じ込める役割を果たしている。しかし流れが弱まると、ジェット気流が蛇行して中緯度の地域まで下りてくるため、この地域に寒気が進入する。こうした変動を北極（南極）振動と呼ぶ。振動は１年に何周期かのペースで繰り返されている。 北極の極渦が弱くなって寒気が進入する現象は、北米や欧州、アジアなど北半球のどの地域にも起こり得る。渦巻きが原因とは言え竜巻やハリケーンとは根本的に異なり、その影響は広範囲、長期間に及ぶ。 ただし米北東部で今回みられたように、下りてきた寒気が南の暖かい空気とぶつかって嵐が発生することもある。昨年３月には欧
