- The Alaska Supreme Court is the state supreme court for the U.S. state of Alaska. Its decisions are binding on all other Alaska state courts, and the only court its decisions may be appealed to is the Supreme Court of the United States. The Alaska Supreme Court hears appeals from lower state courts and also administers the state's judicial system. The court consists of five justices, one of whom is internally chosen to serve as chief justice for a three-year term. The justices are appointed by the governor of Alaska from slates of candidates approved by the Alaska Judicial Council, an independent commission of Alaskan lawyers and lay citizens. Each justice faces a judicial retention election after their third year of service and once every ten years thereafter. It hears cases on a monthly basis in Anchorage, approximately quarterly in Fairbanks and Juneau, and as needed in other Alaska communities. The court prefers to hear oral arguments in the city where the case was heard in the trial court. (en)
- Het Hooggerechtshof van Alaska (Alaska Supreme Court) is de hoogste rechtbank van de Amerikaanse deelstaat Alaska. Het hof bestaat uit vijf rechters, waarvan er één als opperrechter functioneert en daarmee ook aan het hoofd staat van de rechterlijke macht in Alaska. De beslissingen van het Hooggerechtshof zijn bindend voor alle andere rechtbanken binnen de staatsgrenzen en kunnen alleen aangepast of verworpen worden door het Federale Hooggerechtshof in Washington D.C. De rechtszaken worden gehouden in Anchorage, Fairbanks en Juneau, afhankelijk van de locatie van de lagere rechtbank waar de zaak behandeld werd. W sprawach cywilnych rozpatruje wszystkie trafiające do niego odwołania, natomiast w sprawach karnych stosuje procedurę wstępnej oceny sprawy, z możliwością odrzucenia już na tym etapie, przed jej rozpatrzeniem merytorycznym (różnica ta wynika z faktu, iż na Alasce w sprawach cywilnych funkcjonuje jedna instancja mniej niż w sprawach karnych i lukę tę zapełnia Sąd Najwyższy). Sąd liczy pięciu sędziów, którzy raz na trzy lata wybierają spośród siebie prezesa. Sędziowie są powoływani przez gubernatora, przy czym w ciągu trzech lat od swej nominacji muszą być zatwierdzeni przez obywateli stanu w referendum przeprowadzanym przy okazji wyborów. Jeśli sędzia zostanie zatwierdzony, podobną procedurę musi przechodzić następnie co 10 lat, na zasadzie weryfikacji jego mandatu. W referendach tych sędziom nie wolno występować w barwach partyjnych - w założeniu mają to być głosowania apolityczne. Ze względu na wielkość Alaski i jej tradycje prawne, sąd najczęściej odbywa jawne posiedzenia w danej sprawie w mieście, gdzie znajduje się orzekający w niej wcześniej sąd niższej instancji. W praktyce najczęściej organizowane są sesje w Anchorage, gdzie sąd zbiera się średnio raz w miesiącu. W tym mieście zlokalizowane jest także zaplecze administracyjne Sądu Najwyższego. Średnio raz na kwartał rozprawy mają miejsce w Juneau i Fairbanks. W razie potrzeby są także organizowane w mniejszych miejscowościach. (pl)
