- The Cotton or Cottonian library is a collection of manuscripts once owned by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton MP (1571–1631), an antiquarian and bibliophile. It later became the basis of what is now the British Library, which still holds the collection. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, many priceless and ancient manuscripts that had belonged to the monastic libraries began to be disseminated among various owners, many of whom were unaware of the cultural value of the manuscripts. Cotton's skill lay in finding, purchasing and preserving these ancient documents. The leading scholars of the era, including Francis Bacon, Walter Raleigh, and James Ussher, came to use Sir Robert's library. Richard James acted as his librarian. The library is of special importance for having preserved the only copy of several works, such as happened with Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. (en)

Elle rassemble plusieurs centaines de manuscrits et autres documents allant du IVe siècle à l'époque de Cotton. Les manuscrits les plus connus de la bibliothèque Cotton sont ceux des poèmes médiévaux anglais Beowulf et Sire Gauvain et le Chevalier vert, dont on ne connaît pas d'autres exemplaires, mais elle rassemble des contenus très variés : manuscrits bibliques, chroniques médiévales, cartes, etc. Elle est conservée à la British Library depuis sa fondation. Comprende tutti i libri, manoscritti, monete e medaglie di cui era entrato in possesso. Raccolse tutto questo materiale prelevando i libri e i manufatti che furono resi disponibili dalla soppressione dei monasteri voluta da Enrico VIII. La collezione rappresenta la più importante singola fonte conosciuta di testi letterari in antico e medio inglese. Molte celebri opere come il Beowulf, il poema e l'Evangeliario di Lindisfarne sono sopravvissute fino ai nostri giorni solo grazie alla Biblioteca Cottoniana. I più importanti studiosi dell'epoca, tra cui Francesco Bacone, Walter Raleigh e James Ussher si servirono dei testi di proprietà di Cotton e il sacerdote-poeta , che in seguito diede un importante contributo alla fondazione della Biblioteca Bodleiana, lavorò presso di lui come bibliotecario.
