The Cotton or Cottonian library is a collection of manuscripts once owned by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton MP (1571–1631), an antiquarian and bibliophile. It later became the basis of what is now the British Library, which still holds the collection. I più importanti studiosi dell'epoca, tra cui Francesco Bacone, Walter Raleigh e James Ussher si servirono dei testi di proprietà di Cotton e il sacerdote-poeta , che in seguito diede un importante contributo alla fondazione della Biblioteca Bodleiana, lavorò presso di lui come bibliotecario.
