- Polydymit ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der „Sulfide und Sulfosalze“ mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung Ni2+Ni3+2S4 und damit chemisch gesehen . Strukturell zählt Polydymit allerdings zur Gruppe der Spinelle. Polydymit kristallisiert im kubischen Kristallsystem und entwickelt meist oktaedrische Kristalle und Zwillinge von bis zu einem Zentimeter Größe, findet sich aber auch in Form körniger bis massiger Mineral-Aggregate. Das Mineral ist stets undurchsichtig (opak) und zeigt auf den Oberflächen der hellgrauen bis stahlgrauen Kristalle einen metallischen Glanz. Bei frischen Mineralproben ist der Metallglanz von hoher Brillanz. Da Polydymit an der Luft mit der Zeit kupferrot anlaufen kann, schwächt sich auch der Glanz ab. Die Strichfarbe von Polydymit ist dagegen schwärzlichgrau bis schwarz. Mit Linneit (Co2+Co3+2S4) bildet Polydymit eine lückenlose Mischkristallreihe. (de)

- La polydymite, Ni2+Ni23+S4, est un minéral supergène, sulfure de nickel du groupe du thiospinelle, issu de la dégradation de la pentlandite primaire, sulfure de fer et de nickel. La polydymite cristallise dans le système cubique (isométrique), avec une dureté de 4,5 à 5,5 et une densité d'environ 4, sa couleur est gris violet foncé à rouge cuivre, souvent avec du vert-de-gris et une patine provenant des sulfures de cuivre et d'arsenic associés, et se présente en couches amorphes à massives dans des lithologies saprolites inférieures ultramafiques. La polydymite est l'équivalent nickel pur de la violarite FeNi2S4 et dans de nombreux cas ces deux minéraux se forment ensemble, potentiellement en solution solide. Les contaminants communs de la polydymite sont le cobalt et le fer. La polydymite forme une série avec la linnaéite, Co+2Co+32S4. (fr)

Polydymite crystallises in the isometric system, with a hardness of 4.5 to 5.5 and a specific gravity of about 4, is dark violet gray to copper-red, often with verdigris and patina from associated copper and arsenic sulfides, and is typically in amorphous to massive infill of lower saprolite ultramafic lithologies. Polydymite is the nickel equivalent of violarite and in many cases these two minerals are formed together, potentially in solid solution. Common contaminants of polydymite are cobalt and iron.
