- L’écluse de Sheffield est une écluse sur le canal Kennet et Avon, située dans la paroisse civile de Burghfield, dans le Berkshire, en Angleterre. Elle est parfois dénommée par erreur écluse de Shenfield. L'écluse de Sheffield a été construite entre 1718 et 1723 sous la direction de l'ingénieur John Hore de Newbury. Cette portion de rivière est maintenant administrée par la British Waterways et connue sous le nom de voie navigable Kennet (Kennet Navigation). L’écluse permet de franchir un dénivelé de 0,66 m (2 pi 2 po). L’écluse a été construite au début du XVIIIe siècle et avait, à l'origine, des bas-côtés engazonnés. Elle a été agrandie au milieu du XVIIIe siècle pour faire face aux grandes barges « Newbury » et a été modifiée au XXe siècle. Elle est composée d’une chambre aux parois de brique constituée de 11 baies festonnées, et dispose de deux doubles portes en bois, toutes avec une transmission mécanique à palettes. - Sheffield Lock, at grid reference SU648706, is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, in the civil parish of Burghfield in the English county of Berkshire. It is also sometimes known as Shenfield Lock. Sheffield Lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, and this stretch of the river is now administered by Canal & River Trust and known as the Kennet Navigation. It has a rise/fall of 2 ft 2 in (0.66 m). The lock was built in the early 18th century and was originally turf-sided. It was enlarged in the mid 18th century to cope with larger "Newbury barges" and has 20th century alterations. It consists of brick chamber walls of 11 scalloped bays, with brick coping and has 2 sets of double wooden gates, all with mechanical gate paddle gearing. The lock is a grade II listed building, and scheduled ancient monument. (en)
