He is also known as the Frierdiker Rebbe (Yiddish for "Previous Rebbe"), the Rebbe RaYYaTz, or the Rebbe Rayatz (an acronym for Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak). After many years of fighting to keep Orthodox Judaism alive from within the Soviet Union, he was forced to leave; he continued to conduct the struggle from Latvia, and then Poland, and eventually the United States, where he spent the last ten years of his life. Egli fu un rabbino ortodosso ed il penultimo rebbe (capo spirituale dell'ebraismo chassidico) degli chassidim di Chabad. Noto con gli appellativi di Frierdiker Rebbe (precedente rebbe) o Rebbe Rayatz (RaYYaTz, acronimo di Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak), riuscì a sopravvivere ad ambedue le guerre mondiali e, dopo la sua fuga fuori dall'Europa comunista, rifondò la chassidut di Lubavitch negli Stati Uniti. Profugo del comunismo e del nazismo, dopo molti anni di strenua attività per mantenere in vita l'ebraismo ortodosso nell'Unione Sovietica, fu costretto a emigrare; continuò la sua lotta dalla Lettonia, poi dalla Polonia ed infine da New York, dove trascorse gli ultimi dieci anni di vita.
