During COVID we bought a little app called Ignite and turned it into PushPress Train. At the time I didn't realize how hard an acquisition would be (even though everyone warned me). For 2 years, we didn't have the resources to give it the love it needed - and the market pounded us for it. Our customers hated it. The integration was terrible at best. It affected everything in our business negatively - our churn rates, our NPS, our customer happiness. After raising our Series A we had the resources to fix this and we did. We upgraded Train in all ways and folded it directly into our Member App. We added programming partners to it, so our clients now get hassle free workouts loaded directly into their gyms. We improved the integration into Core. Now we're doubling down. For the first time ever we have a dedicated engineer who's only job is to make Train amazing in deeper ways. As a CEO, sometimes your decisions might be wrong in the moment but they aren't final answers. Acquiring Train was a bad decision for 2 years... until it wasn't - and now it's a vital piece of our product ecosystem!

Here's how we're using AI to improve time-to-value for our clients: I want to help agencies get their first AI win. Build momentum. On the way to the big stuff. But finding the "wins" takes really getting to know our client Ideally, we'd know our client as deeply as we can BEFORE we start working with them Some of this you can find online through research. But other parts, need to come through talking with the team. At first, I thought we'd get most insights through the sales process... But when I asked my AI to answer critical things from our sales call transcripts - we realized we want to know way more So we revamped what we want to know, and are testing new ways to collect that - AI first I'm not sure whether this will technically be in the "sales" process, or if we'll add an interview step to the onboarding But without leaning into AI, we'd either: - Ask our team to repeat the same questions that WERE addressed in the sales calls, frustrating the client and wasting time - Or, not have the opportunity to go a little deeper upfront Testing new ideas now. 🚨 Small business owners deserve better. There's a massive opportunity in a massive industry to do things better - change is long overdue. Navigating customer acquisition can be daunting, especially for many small trade service business owners. Unfortunately, the current landscape dominated by lead aggregators like Angi's and Yelp often adds to the confusion rather than alleviating it. Key Issues: ⚠️ Deceptive Tactics: The FTC decision in 2023 against HomeAdvisor for deceptive lead-selling practices highlights a major issue. Many platforms promise quality leads but often leave businesses with little understanding of customer acquisition and service value. Sadly, it's our belief and position based on intimate review, that old habits die hard. ⚠️ High-Pressure Sales: Boiler room sales tactics push business owners into minimum to long-term agreements with no recourse, leaving many operating in the red. Take the $ (earn their commission), deliver poor leads, then force the business owner to fight to even receive credits or refunds. ⚠️ Review Manipulation: Yelp faces continual complaints about authentic reviews being removed or deprioritized by arbitrary algorithms, further handicapping business growth. A Better Way Forward: 💡 Opportunity to Build Something Better: New platforms featuring better-aligned incentives that genuinely prioritize small business success. Providing knowledge and tools for accurate service valuation and effective customer acquisition is crucial. Competition is good - if you want to collaborate, let's do it. 💡 Balanced Approach: Emphasize real connections with your clientele and deliver exceptional service to encourage word-of-mouth referrals. There's nothing more powerful than a satisfied customer spreading the word. While not perfect, Google has fostered a more encouraging business environment. Let's rethink how we support small businesses. Even while building our own, we're motivated to discover ways we can pull others forward. PSA to all dev marketers: Output isn’t everything. I bet you can count on one hand the times you’ve sat down and seriously thought about your tech stack. When you’re in campaign mode, it can be hard to think about anything else… But here’s a reality check: the tools you use and how you use them can make or break your marketing success. Before you set out trying to reach developers, you need to ask yourself if your tech is… a) the best fit for what you’re trying to achieve b) making your life as a marketer easier Some of my favorite tools we use at @TLDR: - HubSpot (where our marketing team lives) - RevenueHero (2x’ed our # of meeting overnight!) - Notion (our go-to for organizing and collaborating on all things content and strategy) Favorites from the ScraperAPI days: - Customer.io (great developer-focused marketing automation solution) - Ahrefs (for SEO, our biggest channel) - FirstPromoter (crucial for running our affiliate program). tl;dr: Your tech stack is the unsung hero behind your campaigns. When you take the time to automate, integrate, and elevate your inputs, there’s no limit to what you can do with your outputs.

It's essential to know the client's needs by researching their business and competitors.   Clarity is Kindness Use clear and straightforward language, avoiding industry jargon. Structure the proposal with headings, bullet points, and concise paragraphs. Clearly define your services' scope, outlining what is included and what isn't. This helps prevent scope creep. Be explicit about deliverables, timelines, and the process.   Prove It To demonstrate success in similar scenarios, showcase your expertise by including case studies or past work that are relevant. Highlight any unique skills or tools that set you apart from competitors. Additionally, include a clear call to action at the end of the proposal, explaining the next step the client should take.   Offer Options Consider offering different packages or tiers of service that allow the client to choose the option that best fits their budget and needs. Address potential objections by anticipating and discussing potential risks and how you plan to mitigate them.   Get Personal Personalize the proposal to reflect the client's branding and language. Show attention to detail and make the client feel more connected to your proposal.   Check-in After submitting the proposal, follow up. This can be a simple check-in to ensure they received the proposal and to ask if they have any questions. This keeps the lines of communication open and shows your enthusiasm for the project.   Be Flexible It's essential to be adaptable in this rapidly changing world of technology and client expectations. Those who adjust their proposal methods to suit different project scopes, prospect backgrounds, and specific industry requirements are more likely to succeed.   Ask & Listen Integrating feedback mechanisms into the proposal process is another aspect that could be used more. Regularly soliciting feedback on the format, content, and overall approach can provide insights that enable continuous improvement. This also sets the tone for transparency and being outcome-focused.   Set The Tone Proposals are not just about winning a project but also about building long-term relationships. A carefully crafted proposal that considers the prospect's long-term goals and potential challenges sets a strong foundation for a healthy partnership. It's about showing the client that you are not just a service provider but a partner who is invested in their ongoing success.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Wynter's message testing data is showing how AI-focused website messaging is turning off more and more people. It’s just that so many companies are using AI as the focal point that people are getting fed up. Instead of “wow, they have AI,” it’s leading to more eye rolls. Yes sure people want the benefits of AI, but it’s becoming a standard feature in products instead of a unique advantage. Pushing too hard on AI-focused messaging creates resistance; it might be time to zag.

ISO: Favorite Zap for small org using Zapier to automate tasks. I'm building a few more zaps today with some help and I want to head into the meeting with ideas that I have not yet implemented. My list of already have working include: 1. woocommerce zap to CRM 2. New donor workflow 3. Monthly donor workflow 4. Lapsed donor workflow 5. New donor by check in CRM to Flodesk 6. With any campaign I zap to special workflow (eg. current campaign gets a special 2 email series). I know there is so much I can do there!
