The study examined rapid urbanization and environmental poverty in residential areas of Agbowo, Ibadan, Nigeria. Systematic random sampling technique was used in selecting 169 (0.81%) out of 20,915 residential buildings in Agbowo. Pearson Product Movement Correlation shows a significant mean relationship of r= 0.994; p<0.05 existed between urbanization and social facilities, follow by housing condition with mean relationship of r = 0.008; p< 0.05 and environmental pollution with mean relationship of r = -0.092; p<0.05. However, regression analysis shows that urbanization posed the highest challenges to social facilities with β = 0.998; p<0.05, followed by environmental pollution with β= 0.027; p<0.05 while housing conditions had no significant challenge with β= 0.011; P<0.05. Indicators of environmental poverty such as inadequate social facilities and environmental pollution are major challenges in residential areas of Agbowo due to rapid urbanization.

The history of cities is intertwined with the search for protection from, and the containment of violence. There is a shared lineage between urbanisation and security – from the progressive fortification of cities through aggressive and defensive architecture and the use of siege tactics and enclaves to the rapid expansion of surveillance technologies and the regulation of mobility. However, the modern day urban residential neighbourhood security is creating a wide gap between citizen’s security and privacy. The sheer scale of insecurity in the poor areas or slums means that, in many contexts, it has become routinised or normalised into the functional reality of daily life.  Violence is linked to fear and insecurity, which pervades people’s lives, with serious implications for trust, well-being and social capital among communities and individuals. On this note, this paper was borne out the sole aim of having a comprehensive review of urban residential neighbourhood security which ho...

The study examined the availability, physical environment, mode of transportation, demand and supply, and buying and selling of products in Oja'ba and Oje traditional markets, Ibadan, Nigeria. Systematic and accidental sampling methods were used to sample 167 traders and 30 buyers from 3,347 traders and uncountable buyers in the markets. Concept of marketing and theory of consumer behaviour were used as an anchor for the study. Using descriptive and correlation coefficient, the findings of the study revealed that: there is 99% correlation between consumers level of patronage and market product, availability and affordability of market products influenced the increasing level of consumers' patronage, increase in the prices of market product are not significant as long as consumers' need satisfaction is a guarantee, demand for market products in the festive, peak and off-peak periods suggests an increase in the supply of the products, on-street trading dominates the markets, negotiation is being used as an instrument of resolution in price conflict between buyers and sellers. Upgrading to organized markets is being proposed in addressing the identified challenges of on-street trading, inadequate parking space, inadequate shop and store in the markets.

The history of cities is intertwined with the search for protection from, and the containment of violence. There is a shared lineage between urbanisation and security-from the progressive fortification of cities through aggressive and defensive architecture and the use of siege tactics and enclaves to the rapid expansion of surveillance technologies and the regulation of mobility. However, the modern day urban residential neighbourhood security is creating a wide gap between citizen's security and privacy. The sheer scale of insecurity in the poor areas or slums means that, in many contexts, it has become routinised or normalised into the functional reality of daily life. Violence is linked to fear and insecurity, which pervades people's lives, with serious implications for trust, well-being and social capital among communities and individuals. On this note, this paper was borne out the sole aim of having a comprehensive review of urban residential neighbourhood security which however, agrees with literature that the issues that constitute security threat vary across nations in the world and further expounded the five multi-facial security frameworks guiding urban residential neighbourhood security in other to provide justice and sustainable global security.

Disaster is an inevitable consequence of negative human activities heaped on the environment. It is more pronounced in developing countries where level of preparedness was low in comparison with developed countries. It is against this background that this study evaluates the level of households' preparedness on flood management along Apete river in Ibadan, Nigeria. Concept of disaster preparedness and environmental planning and management provided the analytical framework. Random sampling procedure was used to administer questionnaire in the study area. A structured questionnaire focusing on socioeconomic characteristics of residents, causes, effects of flood disaster, control measures and households' level of preparedness on flood management was administered to 172 households' heads (44 in Fanawole, 41 in Morubo, 35 in Papa, 2 in Apete-Oja and 27 in Akere). In-depth interview were conducted with community representatives on coping strategies employed. Qualitative data were content analyzed while quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance. Causes of flood were attributed to heavy rainfall (97.1%), change in river course (45.3%), dumping of waste in water bodies (94.8%), poor drainage system (89.5%), dam failure (55.8%) and narrow bridges (77.9%). Respondents' mean values of the effects of flood were disruption of public and personal property (3.94), disruption of traffic flow (3.73) and destruction of agricultural land (3.35), loss of lives (3.22), outbreak of diseases (3.24) and sewage spill (3.25). The mean values of flood control measures adopted were: proper waste disposal (3.92), ensuring functional drainage (3.68), demolition of buildings along flood plain (3.22) and re-channelization of water bodies (2.62). While households' level of preparedness on flood management were: flood disaster campaign awareness (3.65), use of concrete embankment (3.41), vehicles' tyres as walkway (3.29), relocation of residents during rain peak period (3.33), erection of plank for residents' movement (3.17) and use of sand bag (3.12). There was significant relationship between the effects of flood disaster and households' preparedness on flood management (r=0.480). The study recommended the need for scaling up households' preparedness initiatives and effective development control measures, among others.

The study examined the interrelationship between planning and politics in the context of Africa. Generic, systemic and process view of planning and politics were reviewed with a view to advancing the understanding of their operations as processes with almost the same inputs which emanate from man's needs, environmental issues and challenges but differs in output.
