Abstract This article examines the main economics activities of Ayacucho (in the Republic of Peru) in the 19 th century. From the review of quantitative and qualitative sources, it argues about proposition that believes that independence began a secular crisis and in contrast, it proposes that in the mentioned century there were agricultural production and livestock trade, wool and brandy, in which the peasant population participated. These activities were fueled by protectionist policies implemented by the Peruvian State and later by the impact of the income of guano exports.
