This paper sets its focal point on local crime prevention policies and their methodological conte... more This paper sets its focal point on local crime prevention policies and their methodological context. It combines theoretical exploration with empirical research to achieve an analysis and valuation of the preventive actions based on a communitycentered crime prevention approach. Therefore, common elements in methodology are highlighted as prerequisites for the success of local crime prevention policies while evaluation emerges as the cornerstone for advancing scientific knowledge and promoting the development of effective, sustainable and replicable local crime prevention actions. According to our conclusions, and bearing in mind the international, European and national experience on this topic, an effective and rational criminal policy at the local level should be based on intensive preliminary work, systematic implementation, and active engagement of the community as well as proper and thorough evaluation.

The special issue "Juvenile Delinquency in Urban Areas" examines juvenile delinquency, through a ... more The special issue "Juvenile Delinquency in Urban Areas" examines juvenile delinquency, through a synthesis of theory and research findings. Moreover, this issue is focusing on specific types of juvenile delinquency including school violence, juvenile gangs and stalking as well as in efforts to tackle the phenomenon. Most of the articles include research results on the problems of juvenile delinquency in Greece. Consequently, there exist some basic conclusions which can be drawn from these findings and may give "food for thought" for broader and deeper reflections, exceeding national borders and offering the basis for an interesting theoretical approach, which could be labelled as "theory of institutional dysfunction in juvenile delinquency". This topic is extremely relevant in our days in which there are many incidents of Greek minors forming groups and being engaged in extreme forms of bullying towards their peers. According to the data from the Greek Police, a significant increase in both quantity and severity in recent years is recorded, with violence being a predominant element of this evolution. For example, robberies committed by minors aged 13-17 increased from 62 in 2000 to 476 in 2020, while violations of weapons legislation rose from 29 to 330 during the same period, indicating a remarkable spread over two decades. Nevertheless, the participation of minors in the offenders of criminal law is relatively low in Greece in comparison to other European countries.

The first Covid-19 cases in Greece were reported in the end of February 2020 and the first nation... more The first Covid-19 cases in Greece were reported in the end of February 2020 and the first nationwide lockdown followed in the beginning of March. Since then, criminality displayed quantitative and qualitative changes and the criminal policy was prioritized on the basis of the threats related to the pandemic. In the context of this chapter, official data will be presented concerning the development of criminality, with emphasis placed on the special features that are linked to the circumstances of the lockdown and in general the measures applied for the containment of the spread of Covid-19. The chapter will also present information regarding the reactions of the citizens both to the different forms of criminality and to the situations linked to the pandemic. The official statistics from the police and data from any existing research will be enriched with information deriving from interviews with policy-makers, the media and other resources. On the basis of the above evidence, we will attempt to address the concerns regarding the emerging crime patterns.

Στο παρόν άρθρο αναλύεται η χωρική κατανομή της εγκληματικότητας σε επίπεδο Αστυνομικού Τμήματος ... more Στο παρόν άρθρο αναλύεται η χωρική κατανομή της εγκληματικότητας σε επίπεδο Αστυνομικού Τμήματος για τους Δήμους Αθηναίων, Φιλοθέης-Ψυχικού και Κορυδαλλού. Τα δεδομένα που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν αφορούν ειδικότερα οκτώ κατηγορίες ποινικών αδικημάτων και αφορούν στη χρονική περίοδο των ετών 2017-2019. Η χωρική ανάλυση ανέδειξε ότι τα ποινικά αδικήματα των κλοπών-διαρρήξεων και των κλοπών οχημάτων αποτελούν το μεγαλύτερο τμήμα των εξεταζόμενων μορφών εγκληματικότητας σε επίπεδο αστυνομικού τμήματος. Περαιτέρω, οι κλοπές/διαρρήξεις καταγράφονται σε υψηλό ποσοστό στις περιοχές ευθύνης των Αστυνομικών Τμημάτων Φιλοθέης-Ψυχικού και Συντάγματος, ενώ οι κλοπές οχημάτων στα Αστυνομικά Τμήματα Κορυδαλλού, Κολωνού, Πατησίων και Παγκρατίου. Τέλος, τα ζεύγη εγκλημάτων με παρόμοια ποσοστά εμφάνισης σε επίπεδο Αστυνομικού Τμήματος είναι: [α] οι κλοπές/διαρρήξεις και οι ληστείες, [β] οι παραβάσεις του Νόμου περί Ναρκωτικών και Όπλων και, [γ] οι παραβάσεις του Νόμου περί Ναρκωτικών και οι πλαστογραφίες.

This study models simultaneously three commonly used indicators of fear of crime: feeling unsafe ... more This study models simultaneously three commonly used indicators of fear of crime: feeling unsafe alone at home after dark, feeling unsafe walking alone after dark and worry about becoming victim of crime, over direct (being a victim) and indirect (knowing a victim) victimisation controlling for demographic and socio-economic characteristics of individuals via multivariate, i.e. multiple responses, multilevel analysis of data from Athens, Greece. The results show that: (a) the association of the three indicators weakens as key explanatory factors of fear of crime are accounted for, (b) crime experiences are related to feeling unsafe at home alone after dark only via its association with feeling unsafe walking alone after dark and worry about becoming victim of crime and (c) indirect and direct prior victimisation and crime exposure shapes predominately perceived future risk

Although in Greece the publication of books of criminological interest began in the last decades ... more Although in Greece the publication of books of criminological interest began in the last decades of the 19th century, the subject of Criminology was introduced by Professor Konstantinos Gardikas first at Athens University in 1930 and, then, at Panteios School of Social and Political Sciences in 1932. Some years later, in 1938, the chair of Criminology and Penology was established at the University of Athens. The involvement of K. Gardikas along with three other European experts in the foundation of Interpol in 1923, also resulted in the creation of an important Branch of Criminological Services with many specialized research laboratories which is evolving constantly incorporating all of modern technologies. In our days, Criminology is taught mainly at the schools of Law and of Sociology. Its semantic boundaries, however, remain unclear and the pursuit of its definition results in a skepticism concerning its appropriate conceptualisation and the criteria which lead to this (Vanderveen, 2006:29), contribut-ing consequently to a disputation even of its status as a social phe-nomenon (Gray et al., 2008:378). Some years later, in 1938, the chair of Criminology and Penology was established at the University of Athens. The involvement of K. Gardikas along with three other European experts in the foundation of Interpol in 1923, also resulted in the creation of an important Branch of Criminological Services with many specialized research laboratories which is evolving constantly incorporating all of modern technologies.
