I futuri architetti dell’École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi venivano indirizzati allo studio dell’arc... more I futuri architetti dell’École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi venivano indirizzati allo studio dell’architettura classica, che si perfezionava poi in Italia a contatto con monumenti e siti archeologici, grazie al Grand Prix, che permetteva loro di soggiornare presso l’Accademia di Francia a Roma. Molti di essi, sulla scia di celebri viaggiatori quali Dufourny, Hittorff e Schinkel, giunsero in Sicilia nella prima metà dell’Ottocento alla scoperta delle antichità e dei multiformi aspetti del paesaggio. Guillaume-Abel Blouet, Pierre-Joseph Garrez, Charles-Auguste Questel, Jean-Jacques Clerget, Louis-Clémentin Bruyerre - per citarne alcuni - si soffermarono a lungo sulle rovine classiche, rilevando e ridisegnando tanti monumenti, tra cui la tomba di Terone nella Valle dei Templi ad Agrigento.

Nei primi decenni del XII secolo si realizzano in Sicilia numerosi edifici religiosi, le cui absi... more Nei primi decenni del XII secolo si realizzano in Sicilia numerosi edifici religiosi, le cui absidi seguono in genere i modelli bizantini, ma non mancano soluzioni originali. Tra le chiese basiliane del Val Demone si distingue quella dei Santi Pietro e Paolo a Casalvecchio Siculo (1117-1172), la cui abside centrale assume esternamente la forma di una torretta a pianta rettangolare, che include due nicchie pentagonali negli spazi di raccordo con la curva interna. Tutte e tre le absidi della chiesa di Sant’Andrea a Piazza Armerina (ante 1148) presentano esternamente un profilo rettilineo e la massiccia struttura muraria ingloba la torre campanaria. Nella cappella palatina di Palermo, consacrata nel 1140, le tre conche sono unificate posteriormente da un volume poligonale, il cui riferimento più prossimo va ricercato nei modelli bizantini. L’analisi delle strutture murarie evidenzia che tale geometria viene fissata fin dalla realizzazione della primitiva cappella del palazzo (la cosiddetta cripta), su cui poggia la chiesa superiore. Lo sperimentalismo planimetrico che si rileva in questi esempi, forse favorito dalle ridotte dimensioni degli edifici, verrà in seguito abbandonato in favore di soluzioni più consuete, privilegiando nelle absidi delle grandi cattedrali gli aspetti prettamente decorativi.

Più di altri edifici cittadini esso riassume tematiche comuni all’architettura siciliana della prima metà del XIX secolo ed è il frutto del raffinato eclettismo culturale del committente: il marchese di Villalonga, Enrico Carlo Forcella (1793-1855).

Nel testo se ne analizzano tre poco noti o inediti: il portale laterale della chiesa di Sant’Agostino, il prospetto sulla corte del palazzo Aiutamicristo e la sezione trasversale della chiesa di Santa Maria di Portosalvo; l’annotazione «Parement du mur avec pilastres d’une epoque posterieure à l’interieur de l’église» riportata sul margine di quest’ultimo, denota tutte le difficoltà interpretative che ha generato in Viollet-le-Duc la complessa storia della fabbrica, iniziata con un progetto classicista e completata dal fabricator tardogotico Antonio Scalone.

Il fondo Visite Vescovili dell’archivio storico diocesano di Mazara del Vallo conserva i resocont... more Il fondo Visite Vescovili dell’archivio storico diocesano di Mazara del Vallo conserva i resoconti delle ispezioni dei vescovi nelle città della diocesi, raccolti in volumi ordinati per luogo e cronologia, a partire dalla fine del Cinquecento.
Le relazioni delle visite dei vescovi Bartolomeo Castelli (1695-1730) e Girolamo Palermo (1759-1765) aggiungono alle solite note contabili informazioni di carattere storico sulla fondazione delle congregazioni e sulla costruzione di chiese e conventi, divenendo quindi una buona fonte documentaria per la storiografia; inoltre, nel caso della città di Trapani, i due volumi contengono anche le rappresentazioni planimetriche di molti degli edifici visitati, quasi tutti a firma di noti architetti locali. È questo un caso singolare che non sembra trovare riscontro in altre città e diocesi siciliane, dovuto alle richieste dei due vescovi, particolarmente attenti al patrimonio ecclesiastico e favorito dalla cultura architettonica locale.

Il libeccio antico, uno dei marmi siciliani più pregiati, largamente impiegato tra la fine del Ci... more Il libeccio antico, uno dei marmi siciliani più pregiati, largamente impiegato tra la fine del Cinquecento e la prima metà del Settecento, veniva estratto a Custonaci (Trapani) e per il suo aspetto variegato, con venature di colore ocra e verde su un fondo rosso, può considerasi il più “barocco” dei marmi isolani.
Gli esordi del suo utilizzo sono rintracciabili in alcuni monumenti funebri, ma fu largamente impiegato nella decorazione architettonica, sia in grandi lastre per i rivestimenti parietali che nelle tarsie a marmi policromi, nonché per realizzare elementi a tutto tondo, quali balaustrini e colonne.
Il libeccio fu molto apprezzato anche fuori dalla Sicilia e venne impiegato in opere di assoluto prestigio quali la tomba di Alessandro VII nella basilica vaticana, opera del Bernini (1672-78), o la decorazione di alcune sale della reggia di Caserta, costruita dal Vanvitelli a partire dal 1751.

Ancor prima della fondazione della quattrocentesca cappella di Sant’Antonio annessa alla chiesa di San Francesco a Castelbuono, pensata come mausoleo di famiglia, essi disponevano di altri luoghi di culto dove custodire la memoria del lignaggio; tra questi rientrano la cappella di giuspatronato nella cattedrale di Cefalù (dove i Ventimiglia figurano pure come committenti di importanti opere architettoniche), la cui esistenza è documentata fino ai lavori di adeguamento seguiti alla Controriforma, nonché quella nel castello di Geraci, dedicata a Sant’Anna e risalente alla metà del Duecento.

La costruzione della cattedrale a opera del re normanno Ruggero II (dal 1131) determinò la rifondazione della città, che conoscerà nei decenni successivi, sotto la signoria vescovile, una profonda rinascita sociale e urbana, le cui peculiarità si manterranno sino all’epoca moderna.
L’altra componente fondamentale nell’evoluzione della città fu l’arrivo dell’aristocrazia feudale che, forte della tolleranza regia al tramonto della dinastia sveva, ne logorò il ruolo di civitas episcopale; infatti dalla metà del Duecento si insediarono a Cefalù i Ventimiglia, un’importante famiglia aristocratica di origine ligure, protagonista di larga parte della storia siciliana medievale.

I giovani architetti non si sono interessati solo delle rovine classiche, ma di tutta l’architettura siciliana e in particolare di quella medievale; per esempio Pierre-Joseph Garrez disegnò il soffitto in legno della cattedrale di Messina e Jean-Jacques Clerget raffigurò il cortile del palazzo Chiaromonte a Palermo.

A partire dal Quattrocento, a Sciacca come in altri centri siciliani, la ricca classe mercantile ... more A partire dal Quattrocento, a Sciacca come in altri centri siciliani, la ricca classe mercantile in concorso con aristocratici e funzionari del Regno, sfruttando le prammatiche del tempo per l’utilizzo di giardini e aree libere, si fece promotrice della costruzione di nuove architetture residenziali, tra cui il palazzo Argomento-Perollo.
Nonostante le trasformazioni, questo edificio conserva gran parte dell’impianto originario e mostra in alzato una volumetria compatta, secondo una tipologia che coniuga i modelli palaziali trecenteschi dell’isola con quelli di ascendenza iberica, connotati dalla presenza nel cortile della scala esterna che lo collega direttamente alla sala magna del piano nobile. In particolare la scala del palazzo Argomento-Perollo mostra sorprendenti dettagli stereotomici nell’arco che la sostiene; esso è infatti strombato e segue una generatrice inclinata sul piano orizzontale, che ne ampia il fronte esterno rispetto al punto di contatto con la muratura dell’edificio, raccordando le due parti con una superficie conica.

Un caso particolare, non molto diffuso in Sicilia, è rappresentato dalla piazza ad angoli chiusi, attraversata nella mezzeria dei lati da una croce di strade, i cui esempi più noti possono individuarsi nelle piazze di Cattolica Eraclea (1610) e Palma di Montechiaro (1637), che nel testo vengono analizzate.

I dettagli di alcuni portali - come quello di Santa Maria Maggiore nel quartiere Albergheria - richiamano le incisioni del secondo volume Della Trasportatione dell’obelisco vaticano… di Domenico Fontana (Napoli 1604); inoltre nel grafico S.L.M. Novelli 75 è possibile riconoscere il portale laterale di Santa Teresa alla Kalsa, in origine appartenente alla chiesa della Madonna delle Raccomandate, oggi non più esistente.

Il libeccio antico, uno dei marmi siciliani più pregiati, largamente impiegato tra la fine del Ci... more Il libeccio antico, uno dei marmi siciliani più pregiati, largamente impiegato tra la fine del Cinquecento e la prima metà del Settecento, veniva estratto a Custonaci (Trapani) e per il suo aspetto variegato, con venature di colore ocra e verde su un fondo rosso, può considerasi il più “barocco” dei marmi isolani.
Gli esordi del suo utilizzo sono rintracciabili in alcuni monumenti funebri, ma fu largamente impiegato nella decorazione architettonica, sia in grandi lastre per i rivestimenti parietali che nelle tarsie a marmi policromi, nonché per realizzare elementi a tutto tondo, quali balaustrini e colonne.
Il libeccio fu molto apprezzato anche fuori dalla Sicilia e venne impiegato in opere di assoluto prestigio quali la tomba di Alessandro VII nella basilica vaticana, opera del Bernini (1672-78), o la decorazione di alcune sale della reggia di Caserta, costruita dal Vanvitelli a partire dal 1751.

I Ventimiglia, tra i più antichi e influenti casati nobiliari siciliani, furono titolari di una c... more I Ventimiglia, tra i più antichi e influenti casati nobiliari siciliani, furono titolari di una corposa signoria nell’entroterra di Cefalù, estesa al complesso montuoso delle Madonie. Ancor prima della fondazione della quattrocentesca cappella di Sant’Antonio annessa alla chiesa di San Francesco a Castelbuono, pensata come mausoleo di famiglia, essi disponevano di altri luoghi di culto dove custodire la memoria del lignaggio; tra questi rientrano la cappella di giuspatronato nella cattedrale di Cefalù (dove i Ventimiglia figurano pure come committenti di importanti opere architettoniche), la cui esistenza è documentata fino ai lavori di adeguamento seguiti alla Controriforma, nonché quella nel castello di Geraci, dedicata a Sant’Anna e risalente alla metà del Duecento.

La costruzione della cattedrale a opera del re normanno Ruggero II (dal 1131) determinò la rifondazione della città, che conoscerà nei decenni successivi, sotto la signoria vescovile, una profonda rinascita sociale e urbana, le cui peculiarità si manterranno sino all’epoca moderna.
L’altra componente fondamentale nell’evoluzione della città fu l’arrivo dell’aristocrazia feudale che, forte della tolleranza regia al tramonto della dinastia sveva, ne logorò il ruolo di civitas episcopale; infatti dalla metà del Duecento si insediarono a Cefalù i Ventimiglia, un’importante famiglia aristocratica di origine ligure, protagonista di larga parte della storia siciliana medievale.

I giovani architetti non si sono interessati solo delle rovine classiche, ma di tutta l’architettura siciliana e in particolare di quella medievale; per esempio Pierre-Joseph Garrez disegnò il soffitto in legno della cattedrale di Messina e Jean-Jacques Clerget raffigurò il cortile del palazzo Chiaromonte a Palermo.

A partire dal Quattrocento, a Sciacca come in altri centri siciliani, la ricca classe mercantile ... more A partire dal Quattrocento, a Sciacca come in altri centri siciliani, la ricca classe mercantile in concorso con aristocratici e funzionari del Regno, sfruttando le prammatiche del tempo per l’utilizzo di giardini e aree libere, si fece promotrice della costruzione di nuove architetture residenziali, tra cui il palazzo Argomento-Perollo.
Nonostante le trasformazioni, questo edificio conserva gran parte dell’impianto originario e mostra in alzato una volumetria compatta, secondo una tipologia che coniuga i modelli palaziali trecenteschi dell’isola con quelli di ascendenza iberica, connotati dalla presenza nel cortile della scala esterna che lo collega direttamente alla sala magna del piano nobile. In particolare la scala del palazzo Argomento-Perollo mostra sorprendenti dettagli stereotomici nell’arco che la sostiene; esso è infatti strombato e segue una generatrice inclinata sul piano orizzontale, che ne ampia il fronte esterno rispetto al punto di contatto con la muratura dell’edificio, raccordando le due parti con una superficie conica.

I dettagli di alcuni portali - come quello di Santa Maria Maggiore nel quartiere Albergheria - richiamano le incisioni del secondo volume Della Trasportatione dell’obelisco vaticano… di Domenico Fontana (Napoli 1604); inoltre nel grafico S.L.M. Queste architetture, inserite in contesti paesaggistici di grande fascino, coprono un vastissimo arco temporale che giunge fino alla metà del Novecento, comprendendo sia edifici religiosi (chiese e monasteri), che civili, nella duplice funzione di fabbricati per la produzione agricola (mulini, masserie, ecc.) e di residenze signorili.

L'architecture construite en Sicile au XIe et XIIe siècles par les Normands, en plus de les composantes romane et byzantine, a un caractère islamique très marquée, donc on peut utiliser la définition de art "arabo-normande". Dans cette architecture la plupart des coupoles en pierre ont une calotte lisse tandis que celles dont la superficie intérieure est ornée de cannelures sont rares; il semblerait que les voûtes côtelées soient présentes uniquement à l'intérieur des édifices que l'on peut dater de la première moitié du XIIe siècle et commandés par le roi Roger II. Il est possible que ce modèle soit arrivé en Sicile par le Maghreb ou par l'Égypte, par le biais de la culture fatimide dont on retrouve la matrice culturelle en Perse.

Nell’architettura religiosa siciliana d’età normanna (XI-XII secolo) sono ricorrenti piccole cupo... more Nell’architettura religiosa siciliana d’età normanna (XI-XII secolo) sono ricorrenti piccole cupole emisferiche in pietra; l’analisi dell’apparecchiatura muraria in alcuni casi di studio, quali San Cataldo e San Giovanni degli Eremiti a Palermo o la chiesa della SS. Trinità di Delia a Castelvetrano (Tp), mostra un’esecuzione accurata e un raffinato sistema costruttivo che ricorre a tecniche stereotomiche; inoltre, il raccordo tra il quadrato di base e l’imposta circolare della calotta avviene tramite nicchie angolari che sostituiscono i consueti pennacchi sferici.
Sebbene nell’impianto planimetrico questi edifici riprendano modelli bizantini, dal punto di vista costruttivo è possibile riscontrare delle affinità con alcuni elementi dell’architettura islamica, importati dalle maestranze arabe presenti in Sicilia.
Anche nelle moschee dell’area magrebina e della vicina Tunisia è possibile ritrovare cupole in pietra da taglio, tra cui si citano quelle di Sousse, Sfax, Kairouan e della moschea al-Zaytuna di Tunisi, tutte databili a partire dal IX secolo; questi ultimi due esempi presentano l’ulteriore peculiarità della conformazione a spicchi convessi e rastremati della calotta.
In età medievale nei paesi d’influenza romana l’uso di dormienti in legno inseriti nella muratura... more In età medievale nei paesi d’influenza romana l’uso di dormienti in legno inseriti nella muratura per aumentarne la coesione o di travi usate come tiranti per contrastare le sollecitazioni a trazione costituì una pratica ricorrente [1]. Tale tecnica costruttiva era diffusa anche in Sicilia, come è attestato da alcune fonti storiche per rilevanti architetture del XII secolo, quali la cattedrale o il castello della Zisa a Palermo.
L’analisi della documentazione sui restauri eseguiti tra Ottocento e Novecento nella Cappella Palatina della stessa città, fondata intorno al 1131 e universalmente ritenuta tra gli approdi più significativi dell’architettura normanna nell’isola [2], permette di costatare un ampio impiego di travi in legno all’interno dei muri.
Già negli anni 1887-1888, nel corso dei lavori diretti dall’architetto Giuseppe Patricolo, si provvide al consolidamento dell’ala meridionale del presbiterio, «rimettendovi tutte le travi logore poste originariamente in mezzo all’opera murata» [3], mentre altri dispositivi simili furono individuati con i lavori avviati nel 1938 dal Soprintendente Francesco Valenti. I disegni di cantiere documentano infatti la presenza di travi in diverse punti della fabbrica: sopra le arcate della navata centrale, nei fianchi dell’arco di trionfo e nel tamburo della cupola; qui in particolare i dispositivi lignei sono posti sia alla base, dove più elementi accostati formano il sostegno a sbalzo dei muri Est e Ovest, che in sommità, dove poderose catene cingono l’imposta della calotta sferica.
Ignorando o sottovalutando la funzione originaria, tali armature che nel tempo si erano ammalorate, vennero sostituite da putrelle in ferro o eliminate del tutto, ricolmando i vuoti con mattoni e malta di cemento.
Al pari delle catene metalliche, i dispositivi in legno, certamente utili ai fini antisismici, oltre a essere previsti fin dalla costruzione - come nel caso della Palatina - sono stati spesso impiegati per il consolidamento di fabbriche dissestate e, come mostrano recenti studi [4], il loro utilizzo in Sicilia si estese all’età moderna.

Molti di essi, sulla scia di celebri viaggiatori quali Dufourny, Hittorff e Schinkel, giunsero in Sicilia nella prima metà dell’Ottocento alla scoperta delle antichità e dei multiformi aspetti del paesaggio. Guillaume-Abel Blouet, Pierre-Joseph Garrez, Charles-Auguste Questel, Jean-Jacques Clerget, Louis-Clémentin Bruyerre - per citarne alcuni - si soffermarono a lungo sulle rovine classiche, rilevando e ridisegnando tanti monumenti, tra cui la tomba di Terone nella Valle dei Templi ad Agrigento.
Le relazioni delle visite dei vescovi Bartolomeo Castelli (1695-1730) e Girolamo Palermo (1759-1765) aggiungono alle solite note contabili informazioni di carattere storico sulla fondazione delle congregazioni e sulla costruzione di chiese e conventi, divenendo quindi una buona fonte documentaria per la storiografia; inoltre, nel caso della città di Trapani, i due volumi contengono anche le rappresentazioni planimetriche di molti degli edifici visitati, quasi tutti a firma di noti architetti locali. È questo un caso singolare che non sembra trovare riscontro in altre città e diocesi siciliane, dovuto alle richieste dei due vescovi, particolarmente attenti al patrimonio ecclesiastico e favorito dalla cultura architettonica locale.

I dettagli di alcuni portali - come quello di Santa Maria Maggiore nel quartiere Albergheria - richiamano le incisioni del secondo volume Della Trasportatione dell’obelisco vaticano… di Domenico Fontana (Napoli 1604); inoltre nel grafico S.L.M. Novelli 75 è possibile riconoscere il portale laterale di Santa Teresa alla Kalsa, in origine appartenente alla chiesa della Madonna delle Raccomandate, oggi non più esistente.
Molti di essi, sulla scia di celebri viaggiatori quali Dufourny, Hittorff e Schinkel, giunsero in Sicilia nella prima metà dell’Ottocento alla scoperta delle antichità e dei multiformi aspetti del paesaggio. Guillaume-Abel Blouet, Pierre-Joseph Garrez, Charles-Auguste Questel, Jean-Jacques Clerget, Louis-Clémentin Bruyerre - per citarne alcuni - si soffermarono a lungo sulle rovine classiche, rilevando e ridisegnando tanti monumenti, tra cui la tomba di Terone nella Valle dei Templi ad Agrigento.
Le relazioni delle visite dei vescovi Bartolomeo Castelli (1695-1730) e Girolamo Palermo (1759-1765) aggiungono alle solite note contabili informazioni di carattere storico sulla fondazione delle congregazioni e sulla costruzione di chiese e conventi, divenendo quindi una buona fonte documentaria per la storiografia; inoltre, nel caso della città di Trapani, i due volumi contengono anche le rappresentazioni planimetriche di molti degli edifici visitati, quasi tutti a firma di noti architetti locali. È questo un caso singolare che non sembra trovare riscontro in altre città e diocesi siciliane, dovuto alle richieste dei due vescovi, particolarmente attenti al patrimonio ecclesiastico e favorito dalla cultura architettonica locale.
Gli esordi del suo utilizzo sono rintracciabili in alcuni monumenti funebri, ma fu largamente impiegato nella decorazione architettonica, sia in grandi lastre per i rivestimenti parietali che nelle tarsie a marmi policromi, nonché per realizzare elementi a tutto tondo, quali balaustrini e colonne.
Il libeccio fu molto apprezzato anche fuori dalla Sicilia e venne impiegato in opere di assoluto prestigio quali la tomba di Alessandro VII nella basilica vaticana, opera del Bernini (1672-78), o la decorazione di alcune sale della reggia di Caserta, costruita dal Vanvitelli a partire dal 1751.

La costruzione della cattedrale a opera del re normanno Ruggero II (dal 1131) determinò la rifondazione della città, che conoscerà nei decenni successivi, sotto la signoria vescovile, una profonda rinascita sociale e urbana, le cui peculiarità si manterranno sino all’epoca moderna.
L’altra componente fondamentale nell’evoluzione della città fu l’arrivo dell’aristocrazia feudale che, forte della tolleranza regia al tramonto della dinastia sveva, ne logorò il ruolo di civitas episcopale; infatti dalla metà del Duecento si insediarono a Cefalù i Ventimiglia, un’importante famiglia aristocratica di origine ligure, protagonista di larga parte della storia siciliana medievale.
Nonostante le trasformazioni, questo edificio conserva gran parte dell’impianto originario e mostra in alzato una volumetria compatta, secondo una tipologia che coniuga i modelli palaziali trecenteschi dell’isola con quelli di ascendenza iberica, connotati dalla presenza nel cortile della scala esterna che lo collega direttamente alla sala magna del piano nobile. In particolare la scala del palazzo Argomento-Perollo mostra sorprendenti dettagli stereotomici nell’arco che la sostiene; esso è infatti strombato e segue una generatrice inclinata sul piano orizzontale, che ne ampia il fronte esterno rispetto al punto di contatto con la muratura dell’edificio, raccordando le due parti con una superficie conica.
Un caso particolare, non molto diffuso in Sicilia, è rappresentato dalla piazza ad angoli chiusi, attraversata nella mezzeria dei lati da una croce di strade, i cui esempi più noti possono individuarsi nelle piazze di Cattolica Eraclea (1610) e Palma di Montechiaro (1637), che nel testo vengono analizzate.

Queste architetture, inserite in contesti paesaggistici di grande fascino, coprono un vastissimo arco temporale che giunge fino alla metà del Novecento, comprendendo sia edifici religiosi (chiese e monasteri), che civili, nella duplice funzione di fabbricati per la produzione agricola (mulini, masserie, ecc.) e di residenze signorili.
L'architecture construite en Sicile au XIe et XIIe siècles par les Normands, en plus de les composantes romane et byzantine, a un caractère islamique très marquée, donc on peut utiliser la définition de art "arabo-normande". Dans cette architecture la plupart des coupoles en pierre ont une calotte lisse tandis que celles dont la superficie intérieure est ornée de cannelures sont rares; il semblerait que les voûtes côtelées soient présentes uniquement à l'intérieur des édifices que l'on peut dater de la première moitié du XIIe siècle et commandés par le roi Roger II. Il est possible que ce modèle soit arrivé en Sicile par le Maghreb ou par l'Égypte, par le biais de la culture fatimide dont on retrouve la matrice culturelle en Perse.
Sebbene nell’impianto planimetrico questi edifici riprendano modelli bizantini, dal punto di vista costruttivo è possibile riscontrare delle affinità con alcuni elementi dell’architettura islamica, importati dalle maestranze arabe presenti in Sicilia.
Anche nelle moschee dell’area magrebina e della vicina Tunisia è possibile ritrovare cupole in pietra da taglio, tra cui si citano quelle di Sousse, Sfax, Kairouan e della moschea al-Zaytuna di Tunisi, tutte databili a partire dal IX secolo; questi ultimi due esempi presentano l’ulteriore peculiarità della conformazione a spicchi convessi e rastremati della calotta.
L’analisi della documentazione sui restauri eseguiti tra Ottocento e Novecento nella Cappella Palatina della stessa città, fondata intorno al 1131 e universalmente ritenuta tra gli approdi più significativi dell’architettura normanna nell’isola [2], permette di costatare un ampio impiego di travi in legno all’interno dei muri.
Già negli anni 1887-1888, nel corso dei lavori diretti dall’architetto Giuseppe Patricolo, si provvide al consolidamento dell’ala meridionale del presbiterio, «rimettendovi tutte le travi logore poste originariamente in mezzo all’opera murata» [3], mentre altri dispositivi simili furono individuati con i lavori avviati nel 1938 dal Soprintendente Francesco Valenti. I disegni di cantiere documentano infatti la presenza di travi in diverse punti della fabbrica: sopra le arcate della navata centrale, nei fianchi dell’arco di trionfo e nel tamburo della cupola; qui in particolare i dispositivi lignei sono posti sia alla base, dove più elementi accostati formano il sostegno a sbalzo dei muri Est e Ovest, che in sommità, dove poderose catene cingono l’imposta della calotta sferica.
Ignorando o sottovalutando la funzione originaria, tali armature che nel tempo si erano ammalorate, vennero sostituite da putrelle in ferro o eliminate del tutto, ricolmando i vuoti con mattoni e malta di cemento.
Al pari delle catene metalliche, i dispositivi in legno, certamente utili ai fini antisismici, oltre a essere previsti fin dalla costruzione - come nel caso della Palatina - sono stati spesso impiegati per il consolidamento di fabbriche dissestate e, come mostrano recenti studi [4], il loro utilizzo in Sicilia si estese all’età moderna.
