Nekad je bio vezan uz škole u ruralnom području, dok danas postoje brojne potvrde o njegovoj važnosti u obrazovnom procesu bez obzira radi li se o ruralnom ili urbanom okruženju. Gradska četvrt Sesvete cijelim je svojim područjem smještena izvan granica grada Zagreba kao naselja. Zauzima čak četvrtinu njegovog ukupnog prostora na sjeveroistoku grada. Apples are an important source of polyphenols in the human diet. They have also shown many potentially beneficial effects on human health. Old, traditional apple varieties grown in the past could also be valuable varieties but little is known about their polyphenolic compounds and characteristics in general. The aim of this study was to collect 25 old, traditional apple varieties, to determine their polyphenolic profile and the amounts of total polyphenols in the peel and flesh, and to compare them with a commercial variety. To the best of our knowledge, some of those varieties have never been studied before (‘Mašanka’, ‘Bobovac’, ‘Batulenka’, ‘Krastavka’). Total polyphenols were determined by using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and individual polyphenol identification was done by using an RP-HPLC. Voštana prevlaka površine kožice ploda šljive ključna je prepreka gubitku vode prilikom postupka sušenja te ju je nužno ukloniti. Cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti utjecaj primjene različitih predtretmana, kemijskog (primjenom lužine), fizikalnog (primjenom abrazije) i toplinskog (ugrijanom destiliranom vodom) na vrijeme sušenja plodova šljive sorte 'President'. Također, varirani su i ključni parametri svakog pojedinog predtretmana poput temperature otopine prilikom toplinskog (22 i 60 °C), koncentracije (0,5, 1 i 1,5% v/v) i temperature (22 i 60 °C) lužine (KOH) kod kemijskog i vremenskog perioda abrazije (5, 10 i 15 min) kod fizikalnog. Pomological properties and polyphenol content of six traditional and six conventional apple varieties from Croatia were studied. The highest fruit weight, height and width were measured in conventional apple cultivar, ‘Red Delicious’, and the lowest in traditional apple cultivar, ‘Adamčica’. The highest content of soluble dry matter was measured in ‘Zlatna Zimska Parmenka’ (16.70%) and the lowest in ‘Mutsu’ (11.30%). The pH (3.90) value was highest in ‘Red Delicious’ and the lowest (3.12) in ‘Zlatna Zimska Parmenka’. Total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity were on the highest level in traditional apple cultivar, ‘Adamčica’ 499.58 mg/100 g FW and 418.83 mmol trolox/L, respectively. Khairpur is the biodiversity center of date palm in Pakistan. The date palm orchards are suffering from a sudden decline disease (SDD) problem caused by a soil born fungus Fusarium solani, which is threatening date palm industry in this region. The efficacy of six different fungicides was tested against Fusarium solani under In vitro and In vivo conditions to control the sudden decline disease of date palm. The experiment was arranged in Randomized Complete block Design (RCBD) in the lab and Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in field conditions. Bavistin D.F showed complete suppression of Fusarium solani followed by Topsin-M, Aliette and Ridomil gold at 150 ppm concentration followed by 100 ppm and 50 ppm. The maximum mean colony growth was recorded in control medium (17.8) followed by Copper oxychloride at 50ppm (15.1). The Bavistin D.F proved to be the highly effective fungicide also under field conditions followed by Topsin-M, Aliette, Ridomil, Mancozeb and Copper oxychloride. In untreated control plants, disease severity was increased with increase in time. The treated plants recovered and produced fruit next season.

Pakistan is rated among the top dates producing countries. The ripening and harvesting time of var. Aseel which is the predominant variety of district Khairpur is often coincides with Monsoon rains that deteriorating most of the crop either the fruit while on tree or on mats for sun drying. Due to this fear growers harvested the fruit at khalal stage and make Chuhharas (boiled date fruit at khalal stage) that has less commercial value than tamar fruits exporting worldwide. Instead of making Chuhharas, artificial ripening of var. Aseel fruit was accelerated by using sodium chloride (NaCl) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) solutions to treat the early harvested and unripe fruit to reach tamer stage by skipping rutab stage. In current study, the harvested fruit at Khalal stage were dipped in different concentrations of both solutions for 4-5 minutes at room temperature. The collected fruit were spread out in a single layer on stainless steel trays for sun curing. Physical and chemical characters were measured before dipping treatments in both solutions and after 72 and 120 hours of sun curing. The obtained results showed the cured fruit dipped in 2% sodium chloride (T4) was found to possess high amount of pulp and total soluble solids. It also hold large size & weight and furnish high yield of very appealing organoleptic qualities.

Dates are major horticultural crop in Middle East region. It is the major fruit crop of arid deserts, in tropical and subtropical areas of the world including Gulf Cooperation Council of Northern Africa and Southern Asia. In Pakistan date palm are grown in four provinces. The area under cultivation of date palm is 98.7 thousand hectares with total production 735 thousand tons. The date palm of Sindh is mainly concentrated in district Khairpur and it is the biodiversity centre for the date palm having more than 300 varieties, which is also major date producing district of Pakistan. The Agriculture Extension Services play an important role in agriculture development by improving agricultural practices and adopting new production technologies in farming. The data used in this study was collected directly from date palm growers in district Khairpur using specially designed questionnaire. Data were collected through field survey in date palm growing area. The 60 growers in the study area were selected for this purpose. The Field survey was conducted regarding use of various inputs in date palm orchards, planting method of newly planted offshoots, irrigation, pollination, cultural practices, protection from pests & pathogens etc. The aim of present study was to conduct survey and to improve agricultural practices in date palm orchards & to disseminate information for production technologies to date palm growers. It was concluded from the survey that awareness level of the respondents varied too much for different aspects of crop and orchard management. In general not very large percentage of growers was aware of latest developments in the field. The study therefore recommends agricultural extension programs to date palm growers, stakeholders, researchers and Government. The data were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS. A secondary data source was also used to draw out results and suggestions.

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) infected with sudden decline disease problem caused by Fusarium solani is considered as one of the most severe problem in Khairpur, Sindh, Pakistan. F. solani is thought to be a causative organism for this epidemiological problem. Six fungicides were tested such as Bavistin D.F, Topsin-M, Alliette, Ridomil gold, Mancozeb and Copper oxychloride at 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 (g) concentrations against F. solani in potted date palm seedlings under greenhouse conditions. The result revealed that all fungicides significantly reduced the infection of F. solani on treated plants as compared to the control (un-treated plants). The significant differences obtained in terms of root and shoot length between treated and untreated plantlets. The maximum root length was recorded using Bavistin D.F that also appeared as highly effective in terms of reducing the disease severity followed by Topsin-M, Alliete and Ridomil gold; while, Mancozeb and Copper oxychloride were appeared as least effective.

An efficient protocol for rapid and large scale In vitro propagation of some Pakistani cultivars of date palm has been established using inflorescence explants at Date Palm Research Institute (DPRI), Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, Pakistan. Immature inflorescences of desired cultivars of date palm detached from mother palms followed by surface sterilization with low torrent of current tap water and then 30% NaOCl2 solution, the outer cover were removed in order to get spike explants and cut into the 2-3 cm small pieces and cultured on modified MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg l-1 2, 4-D + 0.1 mg l-1 IAA + 5.0 mg l-1 NAA for initiation and establishment of cultures. The obtained somatic embryos were subjected to multiplication medium involved 0.1 mg l-1 NAA + 0.05 mg l-1BA. Rooting was achieved using quarter strength MS medium containing 0.1 mg l-1NAA without activated charcoal (AC) initially and then with 3 g l-1 AC. Strong rooted plantlets with 2-3 leaves were transferred to pots contained sand and peat moss mixture (1:1 v/v) with more than 95% success in acclimatization. The acclimatized plants with at least one compound leaf were shifted to the open field conditions at SALU campus for further studying morphological and fruit characterization to ensure the true-to-type nature of tissue culture derived plantlets. High multiplication efficiency and survival percentage with no any somaclonal variation ensured the efficacy of the protocol developed for the production of elite cultivars of date palm of Pakistan and can be used to optimize production of other cultivars of date palm worldwide.
