Not only did these artistic representations provide a means through which to find God, they also held mystical potential. Likewise, mystical writing, from the early medieval period onwards, is also filled with images of God that refract and reflect His glory. This collection of essays introduces the currents of thought and practice that underpin this artistic engagement with Western Christian mysticism, and explores the continued link between art and theology. This book features contributions from leading international academics, and is divided into four sections. The first section offers theoretical and philosophical considerations of mystical aesthetics and the interplay between mysticism and art. The final three sections investigate this interplay between the arts and mysticism from three key vantage points. The purpose of this volume is to explore the rarely considered yet crucial interface between art and mysticism. It is therefore an important and illuminating collection that will appeal to scholars of theology and Christian mysticism as much as those who study literature, the arts and art history. Helen Appleton is a Career Development Fellow in Early Medieval English at Balliol College, Oxford. She has published on early medieval poetry and hagiography, and is also a co-organiser of The Oxford Psalms Network. Her principal research area is the relationship between religious devotion and the environment in Anglo-Saxon England.

The relationship between human life and the course of the year punctuated by the seasons and months has not remained without influence on the very notion of the ages of life. The question that arises is whether we can harmonize the unpredictable flow of human life with the calendar. The confrontation of two medieval works which develop this parallel: the treatise by Philippe de Novare Les Quatre âges de l’homme, and the anonymous poem Les Douze mois figurez, should provide an answer to this question.

The relationship that binds them is marked by permanent tension. The “minor” nature of children’s literature would be determined by its inferior status and at the same time by its search for autonomy, originality, and its own language. In my paper I would like to talk about an encounter that took place in children’s literature in Poland, a meeting of two heroes from two different literary worlds: Petit Nicolas and Manolito Gafotas. This meeting became possible thanks to the translations and thanks to an editorial policy. I want to present the circumstances of this encounter and its consequences.

For Bouvier travel and writing constitute a spiritual experience, and are a part of the art of destruction, or an “exercise in disappearance”. The writer stresses the importance of suffering and disease as elements of asceticism, through which one is able to relieve oneself from one’s burden in order to fully comprehend the world.

This brings up the question of the factor’s hierarchy, which determine such a situation: the role of literary tastes, habits, school programs, editorial policy, and finally – translation. The purpose of this paper is to examine the specificity of the French perception of children’s literature on the example of the complicated fate of the translations (or adaptations) of two famous novels: Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. These two books, which belong to the strict canon of children’s literature, are not so widely known, read or popular in France. It seems that in the process of promotion and assimilation of these two works, translation played a significant role.
