In this exploratory study, using a discourse analysis of official reports posted on the websites of three university cases, the qualitative results unfolded how community engagement was institutionalized. The study identified some of the basic mechanisms social language uses to create institutions within institutions, like university engagement. The study provided data to support the theoretical assumption that language, through a host of possible configurations of texts, generates discourses that engender social actions such as institutionalization. Those processes disclosed how engagement was produced, and it is still evolving. Further research strategies are discussed.

This report compares the development and impact of those policies within three main areas in both countries, namely: (1) trends and characteristics of the growing private higher education sector, (2) commercialisation and business-like trends that private academia is experiencing and, finally, (3) it discusses how all this has created tensioning situations with assessment and accrediting agencies to ensure quality in their private higher education systems. This study shows that private higher education is facing the following challenges in both nations: (1) an uncritical implementation of neoliberal policies, (2) that there is a very unregulated legislation that has allowed many private institutions to profit within loopholes in the law, (3) that quality has become a central concern and some of the mechanisms applied to correct it have not been effective, showing a lack of a comprehensive system of quality assessment, and (4) that enrollment has grown but with several mismatches that challenge the initial goal of advancing economic development through human resources capacities. Alternative policies are discussed

During the last 35 years, questions have arisen about the relevance of their contributions to society as a whole. In this debate, the involved university is born to interact with communities as a partner to teach, research, and solve common problems. This article presents a global description of the emergence of community engagement, its characteristics, and challenges in the context of the United States.

This trend started in the United State of America, with U.S. News and World Report, as the first and most prominent university-ranking model for the country. Similar ranking systems spread like wild fire and are being used at a national level in many countries. However, recently these classifications have crossed national borders producing international comparisons identifying “WorldClass Universities.” The first one to do this, in 2003, was the Institute of Higher Education of the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai that published the Academic Ranking of World Universities, also commonly referred to as the Shanghai Ranking. This ranking has produced a global impact with a wide spectrum of reaction (Marginson and van der Wende 2007). As they seek to distinguish themselves through accreditations, awards and success of faculty, a new tool for showing a competitive edge has emerged: rankings. Various news outlets and websites rank US and international universities. This article reviews these rankings and some of the implications for Adventist colleges and universities. Therefore, two basic questions guide this analysis. First, are rankings really measuring quality? And second, what should be the reaction to these trends to maintain and increase enrollment among Adventist institutions? Responding to these questions may have strategic implications to develop a stronger Adventist Higher Education.

The Emergence of the Ethically-Engaged University, 2023
This book will present a remarkable collection of theoretically and practically grounded chapters... more This book will present a remarkable collection of theoretically and practically grounded chapters from internationally recognized scholars located in the Global North and the Global South, sharing their perspectives about the role of the modern university as a public good institution ethically engaged in social transformation. Therefore, we situate the discussion around the ‘Engaged University’ within an ‘Ethical’ paradigm informed by ethical values and knowledge. The Ethically Engaged University is informed and inspired by the idea of a global ethic. This is a conceptualization of the university, which makes a specific commitment to learners’ emancipation of the human spirit toward principles of global justice. Thus, an ‘Ethically Engaged University’ is one that is more inclusive, differentiating, permeable, ethically reflective, integrative of experience, and socially responsible. This volume is therefore designed with the intent to contribute towards the possibility of reimagining the role of the modern university beyond market-oriented, passive, and de-solidarized practices towards a more ethically engaged paradigm based on principles of mutuality, reciprocity, and social responsibility.

Much of the scholarly work on North-South research to date has concentrated principally on joint publications and co-authorship bibliometrics. In this book, cases are explored within the context of study on international research collaborations to highlight the motivations, mechanics, limitations, and success factors involved in the North-South relationships and their resulting research output.

After providing a historical overview of how Latin American private universities have evolved to become successful research producers, Gregorutti and Delgado analyze specific institutional reforms carried out to overcome cultural resistance to change and implementation of policies related to teaching load, productivity requirements, patent generation, technology transfer, and funding mechanisms that support and stimulate faculty research activities.

And society seems to expect that too. Universities around the world are experiencing an increasing pressure to produce revolutionary ideas that can be translated into publications, patents, business, and the like. As a way of welcoming the third mission for universities, elite winners of this tough game are gathering prestige, visibility, and all kind of human and financial assets. Training and research (the first and second missions) are no longer enough; universities are in a race for resources expressed in rankings that tend to model the whole higher education system. But, what about the small and middle size universities? They are watching the game and want to be part of it. This book is concerned with that group, especially private higher education that is looking for ways to become visible and attract more resources. Leadership at these institutions is becoming more entrepreneurial every day, and following in the steps of highly research productive schools. Changes like these do not come without resistance from, among others, faculty members who see these shifts as a threat to their traditional teaching mission. In short, this wave of producing inventions has put an incredible amount of stress on human resources and funding at smaller institutions.

Such a growth is really unbelievable when one considers the very humble beginning of the denomination’s educational system, over a century ago. One may wonder what has caused such a quick expansion of colleges and universities, especially, toward the end of the 20th century. And, if the characteristics of these institutions at the beginning of the 21st century present some issues that need special attention. This chapter seeks to map some of the forces behind this quantitative expansion along with the pressures and challenges universities face nowadays. In addition, it also discusses some core assumptions and elements Adventist universities should take into account to successfully maintain their identity throughout tensioning trends in education.

This way, the recent development of a knowledge economy has strongly impacted universities that look for ways to produce and commercialize ideas (second and third missions). The increasing accreditation agencies and regional and international rankings have helped to reinforce these processes. This trend has created a situation where isomorphic mechanisms are pressing universities to align themselves with models that do not always fit a wide spectrum of them. In addition, this chapter underlines the excessive emphasis on faculty research productivity in detriment of ethic and values training that is key to have a successful professional development and an effective and well-adjusted implementation of any project. A final section discusses possible scenarios with alternative tools for administrators, who want to enrich the actual state of their universities.
