Geert Vermeire is a curator, writer and artist with a background in musicology and in performance arts. His artistic practice is focused on mixed reality in performative contexts, relating to movement art, sound art and literature/text in public space, departing from social practices and the ethical involvement of cultural action. His artistic interest involves walking as a creative and interdisciplinary performative instrument, based on (slow) walking performances, connecting postmodern dance and walking practices and in an participative approach with communities. He is exploring the potential of collaborative processes, with artists of various disciplines and backgrounds, including new media and sound artists.

Artists from all over the world investigated silence, intimacy, and emptiness in the contemporary urban fabric of the city through collective experiences and documentation of diverse artistic practices with parallel and simultaneous actions in other cities. As Nicosia is a divided capital, the idea of crossing, borders and limits was almost inevitably an integral part of many projects. Investigations of “parallel cities within a city” were also carried out as guided walks, referencing the urban reality of marginalised communities and groups, in contrast to the high street experience. Walks/performances also strove to connect the experience of navigating virtual and actual spaces simultaneously. Ultimately, this presentation asks the question: can a playful encounter in public spaces carry political implications or make us experience a certain place anew?

In 2... more MADE OF WALKING is a network, forum and gathering dedicated to walking and sound practices.
In 2018 Made of Walking is organized in Cyprus in the frame of Sites embodied / Nature Embodied 2018, a continuation of the project Sites Embodied Cyprus during Pafos2017, focusing this year on the villages of Neon Chorio and Smigies in the Akamas Peninsula, a fragile nature reserve, with a precious and unique ecology. The diversity of flora and fauna living in this relatively small area is truly impressive. On a European level, Cyprus including the Akamas area has been identified as one of the rare, still remaining areas of endemism (species being unique to a defined geographic location) in Europe. The topic of Plant(e)scape is explicitly referring to the plant habitats of Akamas.
CONCEPTUAL THREAD
Theme of Made of Walking this year is Plant(e)scape, relating to human motion and emotion in a plenary botanical background, and combining walking as a creative instrument with two emergent sciences: Spaziergangwissenschaft (promenadology) and Critical Plant Studies (Vegetal Philosophy: Plant-Thinking).
Promenadology is a "tool" to explore our everyday living environment, as well as for delivery of content and knowledge, in combination with Critical Plant Studies, departing from literature and considering the plants as living entities with their own consciousness, as thinking, sentient beings, not mere objects to be studied and classified; they are also agents in the production of meaning. Following the logic of a symbiotic being in the world, (shared by humans, animals and plants), where the anthropomorphic centrality is lost, we aim to recover a vegetal point of view and creating new ecological meanings that may deepen symbolic and aesthetic levels.
The gathering invites to live sound and performance works, walks, workshops and presentations, accompanied by workshops by invited key note sound artists, walking artists, performers and researchers.
OPEN CALL
All walking practitioners, researchers, performative and movement artists, (digital and non digital) artists, musicians and sound artists are invited to apply, as long their work relates with movement outdoors or spatial music/sound practices. Application can be both as attendee or as contributor with a proposed walk/performance, locative or outdoor installation, workshop and/or presentation.
We seek for:
• Live performances relating to sound, literature and walking to be held in landscape / countryside throughout the event with the participation of the general public/local residents.
• Workshops by researchers and by artists: for the participants, general public and local residents along workshops for students of various disciplines of the institutes involved
• Public talks, presentations and conferences, for a large audience.

Made of Walking Delphi in Summer 2016 brought together 23 walking practitioners and 100 participants from around the world. The second edition in Delphi will take place from 10 July to 23 July 2017 in the town of Delphi and its surrounding villages, the archeological sites and the splendid ancient Delphi - Kirra landscape . Made of Walking Delphi 2017 focuses on outdoors movement practices and new technology / live electronics, inviting to new ways of co-operation in sound and movement while connected as (micro- or macro-) walking "webs" of people, focusing on flow and movement in the environment MAIN FEATURED ARTIST Main featured artist is sound artist and composer Ros Bandt (Australia), engaging with the participants of Made of Walking in a collaboration of making a giant illuminated people spider aeolian harp which can be played and moved around by walkers at night, connected with strings. A new sound composition will be played with attached portable speaker sound elements by composer Jon Drummond (Australia). The keynote workshop involves the creation of a "human harp", eight walkers connected with each other and Ros Bandt, playing the strings that connect them in their walking trajectory, resonating with the ground and the landscape. The performance will afterwards travel through Europe, from South to North. As a group the participants will perform from a graphic walking score, accompanied by stellar electronic sounds.
OPEN CALL All walking practitioners, performative and movement artists, (digital and non digital) artists, musicians and sound artists are invited to apply, as long their work relates with movement outdoors or spatial music/sound practices. Application can be both as attendee or as contributor with a proposed walk/performance, locative or outdoor installation, workshop, presentation, as well with relevant videos for screening.
CONCEPTUAL THREAD Evolving the act of walking in sound waves and webs is our conceptual and artistic proposal of Made of Walking in Delphi, focusing on ways of unfolding steps that restore a sound score of the dialogue between humans and the ground. In a broader sense, this rhythmical duet intends an ecologic ‘sculpture’ of the earth through various walking webs. In order to create an orphic mapping of these “erratic” places and spaces, agents of walk-thinking and walking-arts are invited to create new fields of promenadology, centered around World Listening - 18th of July with topic "Listening to the ground". We look for playful and dynamic interventions, leading to new conversations about and revealing the other sides of movement in lived space / landscape in an interplay between movement, performance, digital arts and new media. Sound has the potential to challenge our everyday perception and inspire new kinds of social choreographies. What is the political potential of sonic practices? How do they change our experience of the city? How can audio-tours facilitate different ways of relating to the urban space? The exhibition investigates and wants to stimulate connections and exchange between young artists and young creative professionals, living in Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, and France. Selected results of artistic collaborations will be presented in a series of exhibitions during 2016 in these countries.
The exhibition departs from the relation between (public) space, body, senses and digital arts.
We call upon emerging artists and young creatives to propose innovative art works, connecting the digital world with the body, within the public space (indoors/outdoors) or by creating own public spaces (physical, virtual, shared or hybrid) focusing on interplay, response, meeting, dialogue and discourse, inspired by artistic gestures, playful stagings and dynamic interventions, leading to new conversations about and revealing the other sides of the Mediterranean. Artists and creative professionals of all fields are welcome to apply (performers, dancers, actors, musicians, sound artists, designers, painters, sculptors, new media artists, digital artists, internet artists, software and app developers, video artists, installation and technology artists, architects, social and community artists, writers, etc.). Artistic collectives, groups and artists with disabilities are strongly encouraged to participate. Participants must be younger than 36 years old. They must have the center of their life in Greece, Cyprus, France or Lebanon. The selection is supervised and realized by the curator of the exhibition, Geert Vermeire.

Stefaan van Biesen´s exploration of the (urban human) space, by means of walking as a sensorial and kinesthesic experience, joins a recent scientific and aesthetical development, the Spaziergangwissenschaft (the science of walking or promenadology), introduced in the nineties at the University of Kassel in Germany by the sociologist and urbanologist Lucius Burckhardt (1925-2003). The promenadology implies the participation of residents, in a kinesthesic aesthetics, with small or as small as possible interventions in the urban fabric. Walking becomes an observing stimulus related to space. A cognitive dimension of the urban space articulates itself in a personalized urban layer, by means of a somatic choreography.
“The body as a motor is, in this way, a map-making body: the places where it passes through, there it organizes itself as a map. And the map, revealing the body through the places where it passed, appears as a metaphor of knowledge (of the relation between body and place). “ (Paulo Silva, O Lugar do Corpo)
Stefaan van Biesen is one of the important artists, at an international level, who investigates promenadology on an aesthetical way (by means of plastic work, multimedia, installations and performances, contextualized in social projects).
His artistic oeuvre has an affinity with the work of another famous walker, Fernando Pessoa. The plastic corpus of Stefaan van Biesen is an important artistic comment on a Pessoa-logical vision. We integrate for example his oeuvre in a critical analysis of the literary representation of the city of Lisbon, which leads to a joint project with the artist: the project “White walk” (2014-2015), an artistic and literary research of Lisbon by means of the phenomenology of the walk.

Sound has the potential to challenge our everyday perception and inspire new kinds of social choreographies. What is the political potential of sonic practices? How do they change our experience of the city? How can audio-tours facilitate different ways of relating to the urban space? Starting from these questions, current developments of sound art in urban contexts will be discussed.

‘Silence, Narrative and Intimacy of the City’ (University of Edinburgh,
February 2016) aiming to explore the specificities of the form of engagement activated by briefing urban atmospheric workshops on silence and intimacy. The thinking, writing, communicating and executing of the briefs of the actions involved is investigated here as a multi‐layered process of grasping the vagueness of ambiantial experiences through a stirring effect. The latter focuses on the potentialities of the realms between the different workshops, the facilitators and the participants to elucidate the organic nature of such an event and its future possibilities.
Delphi, 15 - 23 July 2017 (main event) / 10 July - 23 July (residency)
MADE OF WALKING Delphi is a summer school and collaborative-participative event about walking practices, within the 11th Animart Experiential Arts School and Forum of Contemporary Creativity in Delphi.
Made of Walking Delphi 2017 focuses on outdoors movement practices and new technology / live electronics, inviting to new ways of co-operation in sound and movement while connected as (micro- or macro-) walking "webs" of people, focusing on flow and movement in the environment
MAIN FEATURED ARTIST
Main featured artist is sound artist and composer Ros Bandt (Australia), engaging with the participants of Made of Walking in a collaboration of making a giant illuminated people spider aeolian harp which can be played and moved around by walkers at night, connected with strings.
OPEN CALL
All walking practitioners, performative and movement artists, (digital and non digital) artists, musicians and sound artists are invited to apply, as long their work relates with movement outdoors or spatial music/sound practices. Application can be both as attendee or as contributor with a proposed walk/performance, locative or outdoor installation, workshop, presentation, as well with relevant videos for screening.
CONCEPTUAL THREAD
Evolving the act of walking in sound waves and webs is our conceptual and artistic proposal of Made of Walking in Delphi, focusing on ways of unfolding steps that restore a sound score of the dialogue between humans and the ground.
