We calculate the influence of diffusive and ballistic transport on ultrafast magnetization in thick metallic films. When only diffusive transport is present, gradients of magnetization in the material remain up to picosecond timescales. In contrast, in the extreme superdiffusive limit where ballistic transport dominates, the magnetization changes homogeneously in space. We calculate the measurable magneto-optical responses for a $\SI{40}{\nano\meter}$ Nickel film. Although the resulting Kerr rotation dynamics are found to be very similar in the two limits of transport, our simulations reveal a clear signature of magnetization gradients in the Kerr ellipticity dynamics, namely a strong probe-angle dependence for the case when diffusive transport allows gradients to persist. We then perform probe-angle dependent complex magneto-optical Kerr effect (CMOKE) measurements on an excited \SI{40}{\nano\meter} Nickel film. The angle dependence of the measured Kerr signals closely matches the simulated response with diffusive transport. Therefore we conclude that the influence of ballistic transport on ultrafast magnetization dynamics in such films is negligible.

We study two dimensional systems with extended conformal symmetry generated by the ${\mathcal W}_3$ algebra. These are expected to have an infinite number of commuting conserved charges, which we refer to as the quantum Boussinesq charges. We compute the eigenvalues of the quantum Boussinesq charges in both the vacuum and first excited states of the higher spin module through the ODE/IM correspondence. By studying the higher spin conformal field theory on the torus, we also calculate thermal correlators involving the energy-momentum tensor and the spin-3 current by making use of the Zhu recursion relations. By combining these results, we show that it is possible to derive the current densities, whose integrals are the quantum Boussinesq charges. We also evaluate the thermal expectation values of the conserved charges, and show that these are quasi-modular differential operators acting on the character of the higher spin module.

We revisit the flavored elliptic genus of the N=2 superconformal cigar model and generalize the analysis of the path integral result to the case of real central charge. It gives rise to a non-holomorphic modular covariant function generalizing completed mock modular forms. We also compute the genus for angular orbifolds of the cigar and Liouville theory and decompose it in terms of discrete and continuous contributions. The orbifolded elliptic genus at fractional level is a completed mock modular form with a shadow related to U$(1)$ modular invariants at rational radius squared. We take the limit of the orbifolded genera towards a weighted ground state index and carefully interpret the contributions. We stress that the orbifold cigar and Liouville theories have a maximal and a minimal radius, respectively.

We compute the structure constants of topological symmetric orbifold theories up to third order in the large N expansion. The leading order structure constants are dominated by topological metric contractions. The first order interactions are single cycles joining while at second order we can have double joining as well as splitting. At third order, single cycle joining obtains genus one contributions. We also compute illustrative small N structure constants. Our analysis applies to all second quantized Frobenius algebras, a large class of algebras that includes the cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme of points on K3 among many others. This paper numerically investigates the instability characteristics of decelerating flows. The flow dynamics and temporal evolution of coherent structures in a diverging section with mild spatial pressure gradient are analyzed using numerical experiments with Incompact3d code. The unsteady nature of flow and adverse pressure gradient is the reason for inflectional velocity profiles, results into boundary layer separation and instability with reverse flow and later on it leads to vortex formation. Vortex formation time is found by vortex Reynold's number. Time of first vortex formation, non-dimensional vortex formation times with Reynold's number etc. are validated with an experimental results.

We quantise orbits of the adjoint group action on elements of the sl(2,R) Lie algebra. The path integration along elliptic slices is akin to the coadjoint orbit quantization of compact Lie groups, and the calculation of the characters of elliptic group elements proceeds along the same lines as in compact groups. The computation of the trace of hyperbolic group elements in a diagonal basis as well as the calculation of the full group action on a hyperbolic basis requires considerably more technique. We determine the action of hyperbolic one-parameter subgroups of PSL(2,R) on the adjoint orbits and discuss global subtleties in choices of adapted coordinate systems. Using the hyperbolic slicing of orbits, we describe the quantum mechanics of an irreducible sl(2,R) representation in a hyperbolic basis and relate the basis to the mathematics of the Mellin integral transform. We moreover discuss the representation theory of the double cover SL(2,R) of PSL(2,R) as well as that of its universal cover. Traces in the representations of these groups for both elliptic and hyperbolic elements are computed. Finally, we motivate our treatment of this elementary quantisation problem by indicating applications.

We also study the behaviour of short and long strings in the Wess-Zumino-Witten orbifold and show that their energy matches the long string probe analysis. In the process, we fix subtleties in the Lorentzian choice of NSNS flux. In Euclidean signature, we analyse the one-loop fundamental string partition function on the BTZ black hole and interpret the off-shell degrees of freedom as those of a coset orbifold. Finally, we speculate on how to identify the quantum Lorentzian string spectrum from the Euclidean orbifold partition function.

A density-dependent two-temperature model is applied to describe laser excitation and the following relaxation processes of silicon in an external electric field. Two approaches on how to describe the effects of the external electric field are presented. The first approach avoids the buildup of internal electric fields due to charge separation by assuming ambipolar diffusion and adds an additional carrier-pair current. In the second approach, electrons and holes are treated separately to account for charge separation and the resulting shielding of the external electric field inside the material. The two approaches are compared to experimental results. Both the first approach and the experimental results show similar tendencies for optimization of laser ablation in the external electric field.

Using path integral techniques, we show that the bulk spectrum includes a continuum of states as well as Ramond-Ramond ground states that agree with those of the symmetric orbifold of the two-torus after second quantization. We also examine the one-loop free energy of the background $AdS_3 \times S^1$ at curvature radius $\sqrt{2 α'/3}$. In the space-time NSNS sector, the string theory spontaneously breaks conformal symmetry as well as R-charge conjugation symmetry. We prove that the minimum in the boundary energy is reached for a singly wound string. In the RR sector, we classify the infinite set of ground states with fractional R-charges. Moreover, we remark on the behaviour of critical temperatures as the curvature scale becomes smaller than the string scale. In an appendix, we derive the Hawking-Page transition in string theory by integrating a world sheet one-point function.

We show that the string defects are holographically dual to noncompact probe D3-branes in global $AdS_5\times S^5$ that share supersymmetries with a class of dual-giant gravitons. In particular, we show that turning on a constant background value for some scalar fields in the closed string twisted sectors induces a non-trivial profile for the gauge field and one of the complex scalars of the world-volume theory, and that this profile exactly matches the singular behavior that one expects for a Gukov-Witten surface defect in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We study half-BPS surface operators in N=2supersymmetric asymptotically conformal gauge theories in four dimensions with SU(N) gauge group and 2N fundamental flavours using localization methods and coupled 2d/4d quiver gauge theories. We show that contours specified by a particular Jeffrey-Kirwan residue prescription in the localization analysis map to particular realizations of the surface operator as flavour defects. Seiberg duality of the 2d/4d quivers is mapped to contour deformations of the localization integral which in this case involves a residue at infinity. This is reflected as a modified Seiberg duality rule that shifts the Lagrangian of the purported dual theory by non-perturbative terms. The new rules, that depend on the 4d gauge coupling, lead to a match between the low energy effective twisted chiral superpotentials for any pair of dual 2d/4d quivers.

We study various relations governing quasi-automorphic forms associated to discrete subgroups of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R}) $ called Hecke groups. We show that the Eisenstein series associated to a Hecke group ${\rm H}(m)$ satisfy a set of $m$ coupled linear differential equations, which are natural analogues of the well-known Ramanujan identities for quasi-modular forms of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. Each Hecke group is then associated to a (hyper-)elliptic curve, whose coefficients are determined by an anomaly equation. For the $m=3$ and $4$ cases, the Ramanujan identities admit a natural geometric interpretation as a Gauss-Manin connection on the parameter space of the elliptic curve. The Ramanujan identities also allow us to associate a nonlinear differential equation of order $ m $ to each Hecke group. These equations are higher-order analogues of the Chazy equation, and we show that they are solved by the quasi-automorphic Eisenstein series $E_2^{(m)}$ associated to ${\rm H}(m) $ and its orbit under the Hecke group. We conclude by demonstrating that these nonlinear equations possess the Painlevé property.

With online professional network platforms (OPNs, e.g., LinkedIn, Xing, etc.) becoming popular on the web, people are now turning to these platforms to create and share their professional profiles, to connect with others who share similar professional aspirations and to explore new career opportunities. These platforms however do not offer a long-term roadmap to guide career progression and improve workforce employability. The career trajectories of OPN users can serve as a reference but they are not always optimal. A career plan can also be devised through consultation with career coaches, whose knowledge may however be limited to a few industries. To address the above limitations, we present a novel data-driven approach dubbed JobComposer to automate career path planning and optimization. Its key premise is that the observed career trajectories in OPNs may not necessarily be optimal, and can be improved by learning to maximize the sum of payoffs attainable by following a career path. At its heart, JobComposer features a decomposition-based multicriteria utility learning procedure to achieve the best tradeoff among different payoff criteria in career path planning. Extensive studies using a city state-based OPN dataset demonstrate that JobComposer returns career paths better than other baseline methods and the actual career paths.

Analyzing job hopping behavior is important for understanding job preference and career progression of working individuals. When analyzed at the workforce population level, job hop analysis helps to gain insights of talent flow among different jobs and organizations. Traditionally, surveys are conducted on job seekers and employers to study job hop behavior. Beyond surveys, job hop behavior can also be studied in a highly scalable and timely manner using a data driven approach in response to fast-changing job landscape. Fortunately, the advent of online professional networks (OPNs) has made it possible to perform a large-scale analysis of talent flow. In this paper, we present a new data analytics framework to analyze the talent flow patterns of close to 1 million working professionals from three different countries/regions using their publicly-accessible profiles in an established OPN. As OPN data are originally generated for professional networking applications, our proposed framework re-purposes the same data for a different analytics task. Prior to performing job hop analysis, we devise a job title normalization procedure to mitigate the amount of noise in the OPN data. We then devise several metrics to measure the amount of work experience required to take up a job, to determine that existence duration of the job (also known as the job age), and the correlation between the above metric and propensity of hopping. We also study how job hop behavior is related to job promotion/demotion. Lastly, we perform connectivity analysis at job and organization levels to derive insights on talent flow as well as job and organizational competitiveness.

We also study surface operators as coupled 2d/4d quiver gauge theories with an SU(N) flavour symmetry. In this description, the same surface operator can be described by different quivers that are related to each other by two dimensional Seiberg duality. We argue that these dual quivers correspond, on the localization side, to distinct integration contours that can be determined by the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters of the two dimensional gauge nodes. We verify the proposal by mapping the solutions of the twisted chiral ring equations of the 2d/4d quivers onto individual residues of the localization integrand.

Analyzing job hopping behavior is important for the understanding of job preference and career progression of working individuals. When analyzed at the workforce population level, job hop analysis helps to gain insights of talent flow and organization competition. Traditionally, surveys are conducted on job seekers and employers to study job behavior. While surveys are good at getting direct user input to specially designed questions, they are often not scalable and timely enough to cope with fast-changing job landscape. In this paper, we present a data science approach to analyze job hops performed by about 490,000 working professionals located in a city using their publicly shared profiles. We develop several metrics to measure how much work experience is needed to take up a job and how recent/established the job is, and then examine how these metrics correlate with the propensity of hopping. We also study how job hop behavior is related to job promotion/demotion. We study half-BPS surface operators in supersymmetric gauge theories in four and five dimensions following two different approaches. In the first approach we analyze the chiral ring equations for certain quiver theories in two and three dimensions, coupled respectively to four- and five-dimensional gauge theories. The chiral ring equations, which arise from extremizing a twisted chiral superpotential, are solved as power series in the infrared scales of the quiver theories. In the second approach we use equivariant localization and obtain the twisted chiral superpotential as a function of the Coulomb moduli of the four- and five-dimensional gauge theories, and find a perfect match with the results obtained from the chiral ring equations. In the five-dimensional case this match is achieved after solving a number of subtleties in the localization formulas which amounts to choosing a particular residue prescription in the integrals that yield the Nekrasov-like partition functions for ramified instantons. We also comment on the necessity of including Chern-Simons terms in order to match the superpotentials obtained from dual quiver descriptions of a given surface operator.

We calculate the instanton partition function of the four-dimensional N=2* SU(N) gauge theory in the presence of a generic surface operator, using equivariant localization. By analyzing the constraints that arise from S-duality, we show that the effective twisted superpotential, which governs the infrared dynamics of the two-dimensional theory on the surface operator, satisfies a modular anomaly equation. Exploiting the localization results, we solve this equation in terms of elliptic and quasi-modular forms which resum all non-perturbative corrections. We also show that our results, derived for monodromy defects in the four-dimensional theory, match the effective twisted superpotential describing the infrared properties of certain two-dimensional sigma models coupled either to pure N=2 or to N=2* gauge theories.

These are expressed as an expansion in the mass of the adjoint hypermultiplet, with coefficients given by quasi-modular forms of the S-duality group. Under the action of this group, we construct combinations of chiral ring elements that transform as modular forms of definite weight. As an independent check, we confirm these results by comparing the spectral curves of the associated Hitchin system and the elliptic Calogero-Moser system. We also propose an exact and compact expression for the 1-instanton contribution to the expectation value of the chiral ring elements.

We study N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge group SU(2) coupled to fundamental flavours, covering all asymptotically free and conformal cases. We re-derive, from the conformal field theory perspective, the differential equations satisfied by omega deformed instanton partition functions. We confirm their validity at leading order in one of the deformation parameters via a saddle-point analysis of the partition function. In the semi-classical limit we show that these differential equations take a form amenable to exact WKB analysis. We compute the monodromy group associated to the differential equations in terms of deformed and Borel resummed Seiberg-Witten data. For each case, we study pairs of Stokes graphs that are related by flips and pops, and show that the monodromy groups allow one to confirm the Stokes automorphisms that arise as the phase of the deformation parameter is varied. Finally, we relate the Borel resummed monodromies with the traditional Seiberg-Witten variables in the semi-classical limit.

We study N = 2 superconformal theories with gauge group SU(N) and 2N fundamental flavours in a locus of the Coulomb branch with a Z_N symmetry. In this special vacuum, we calculate the prepotential, the dual periods and the period matrix using equivariant localization. When the flavours are massless, we find that the period matrix is completely specified by [N/2] effective couplings. On each of these, we show that the S-duality group acts as a generalized triangle group and that its hauptmodul can be used to write a non-perturbatively exact relation between each effective coupling and the bare one. For N = 2, 3, 4 and 6, the generalized triangle group is an arithmetic Hecke group which contains a subgroup that is also a congruence subgroup of the modular group PSL(2,Z). For these cases, we introduce mass deformations that respect the symmetries of the special vacuum and show that the constraints arising from S-duality make it possible to resum the instanton contributions to the period matrix in terms of meromorphic modular forms which solve modular anomaly equations.

Delays and data losses are undesirable from a control system perspective as they tend to adversely affect performance Networked Control Systems (NCSs) are a class of control systems wherein control components exchange information using a shared communication channel. Delays and packet losses in the communication channels are usually random, thereby making the analysis and design of control loops more complex. The usual assumptions in classical control theory, such as delay free sensing and synchronous actuation, assume lesser significance when it comes to NCSs. Hence, this necessitates a reformulation/relook into the existing models used for NCS control loop analysis and design. In this paper, we study and present the reformulations required for NCSs to include random delays and packet loss in the channel. This paper thereby gives a complete overview of what has been accomplished thus far in NCS research and puts forth a unified framework for analyzing a host of problems that can be captured as NCSs subjected to random delays and packet losses.

We take particular care in obtaining the detailed relation between the parameters appearing in these descriptions and the physical quantities of the quiver gauge theories. This precise map allows us to efficiently reconstruct the non-perturbative prepotential that encodes the effective IR properties of these theories. We give explicit expressions in the cases n=1,2, also in the presence of an Omega-background in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We demonstrate that Appell-Lerch sums with higher order poles as well as their modular covariant completions arise as partition functions in the cigar conformal field theory with worldsheet supersymmetry. The modular covariant derivatives of the elliptic genus of the cigar give rise to operator insertions corresponding to (powers of) right-moving momentum, left-moving fermion number, as well as a term corresponding to an ordinary zero mode partition sum. To show this, we demonstrate how the right-moving supersymmetric quantum mechanics (and in particular the Hamiltonian and spectral density) depend on the imaginary part of the chemical potential for angular momentum. As a consequence of our analysis we find that varying the imaginary part of the chemical potential for angular momentum on the cigar gives rise to a wall-crossing phenomenon in the bound state contribution to the elliptic genus, while the full elliptic genus is a continuous function of the chemical potential.

We analyze zero mode counting problems for Dirac operators that find their origin in string theory backgrounds. A first class of quantum mechanical models for which we compute the number of ground states arises from a string winding an isometric direction in a geometry, taking into account its energy due to tension. Alternatively, the models arise from deforming marginal bound states of a string winding a circle, and moving in an orthogonal geometry. After deformation, the number of bound states is again counted by the zero modes of a Dirac operator. We count these bound states in even dimensional asymptotically linear dilaton backgrounds as well as in Euclidean Taub-NUT. We show multiple pole behavior in the fugacities keeping track of a U(1) charge. We also discuss a second class of counting problems that arises when these backgrounds are deformed via the application of a heterotic duality transformation. We recursively do the transformation from twistors to momentum twistors and obtain an iterative formula for Yangian invariants that involves a succession of dualized twistor variables. This turns out to be useful in addressing the problem of classifying the residues of the Grassmannian. The iterative formula leads naturally to new coordinates on the Grassmannian in terms of which both composite and non-composite residues appear on an equal footing. We write down residue theorems in these new variables and classify the independent residues for some simple examples. The boundary superconformal algebra plays an important role in classifying the full spectrum of string theory on AdS3 with Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and in the microscopic entropy counting in D1-D5 systems.

We construct a non-chiral current algebra in two dimensions consistent with conformal invariance. We show that the conformal current algebra is realized in non-linear sigma-models on supergroup manifolds with vanishing dual Coxeter number, with or without a Wess-Zumino term. The current algebra is computed using two distinct methods. First we exploit special algebraic properties of supergroups to compute the exact two- and three-point functions of the currents and from them we infer the current algebra. The algebra is also calculated by using conformal perturbation theory about the Wess-Zumino-Witten point and resumming the perturbation series. We also prove that these models realize a non-chiral Kac-Moody algebra and construct an infinite set of commuting operators that is closed under the action of the Kac-Moody generators. The supergroup models that we consider include models with applications to statistical mechanics, condensed matter and string theory. In particular, our results may help to systematically solve and clarify the quantum integrability of PSU(n|n) models and their cosets, which appear prominently in string worldsheet models on anti-deSitter spaces.

Abstract:
We derive the BPS equations for D3-branes embedded in AdS_5 X S^5 that preserve at least two supercharges. These are given in terms of conditions on the pullbacks of some space-time differential four-forms. Solutions to our equations are shown to describe all the known giant and dual-giant gravitons in AdS_5 X S^5. We then argue that the configuration spaces of dual-giants can be mapped to non-c…

We then argue that the configuration spaces of dual-giants can be mapped to non-compact hyperbolic versions of complex projective spaces, in contrast with the giants, whose configuration spaces have been mapped to complex projective spaces. We quantize the configuration space of the 1/8-BPS dual-giants with two angular momenta in AdS_5 and one angular momentum in S^5 and find agreement with the partition function in the literature obtained both from counting appropriate 1/8-BPS configurations of giants and the boundary gauge theory considerations.

We study non-compact Gepner models that preserve sixteen or eight supercharges in type II string theories. In particular, we develop an orbifolded Landau-Ginzburg description of these models analogous to the Landau-Ginzburg formulation of compact Gepner models. The Landau-Ginzburg description provides an easy and direct access to the geometry of the singularity associated to the non-compact Gepner models. Using these tools, we are able to give an intuitive account of the chiral rings of the models, and of the massless moduli in particular. By studying orbifolds of the singular linear dilaton models, we describe mirror pairs of non-compact Gepner models by suitably adapting the Greene-Plesser construction of mirror pairs for the compact case. For particular models, we take a large level, low curvature limit in which we can analyze corrections to a flat space orbifold approximation of the non-compact Gepner models. This gives rise to a counting of moduli which differs from the toric counting in a subtle way.

We exhibit exact conformal field theory descriptions of SO(N) and Sp(N) pairs of Seiberg-dual gauge theories within string theory. The N=1 gauge theories with flavour are realized as low energy limits of the worldvolume theories on D-branes in unoriented non-critical superstring backgrounds. These unoriented backgrounds are obtained by constructing exact crosscap states in the SL(2,R)/U(1) coset conformal field theory using the modular bootstrap method. Seiberg duality is understood by studying the behaviour of the boundary and crosscap states under monodromy in the closed string parameter space.
