We recorded X-ray spectra of stored and electron cooled helium-like uranium (U$^{90+}$) with an unmatched spectral resolution of close to 90 eV, using novel metallic magnetic calorimeter detectors at CRYRING@ESR. This allowed for an accurate determination of the energies of all four components of the K$α$ transitions in U$^{90+}$. We find good agreement with state-of-the-art bound-state QED calculations for the strong-field regime. Our results do not support any systematic deviation between experiment and theory in helium-like systems, the presence of which was subject of intense debates in recent years.

The solution in sense of Prager&Synge is the alternative to the commonly used notion of the numerical solution, which is considered as a limit of grid functions at mesh refinement. Prager&Synge solution is defined as a hypersphere containing the projection of the true solution of the system of partial differentiation equations (PDE) onto the computational grid and does not use any asymptotics. In the original variant it is determined using orthogonal properties specific for certain equations. In the proposed variant, the center and radius of the hypersphere is estimated using the ensemble of numerical solutions obtained by independent algorithms. This approach may be easily expanded for solutions of an arbitrary system of partial differentiation equations that significantly expands the domain of its applicability. Several options for the computation of the Prager&Synge solution are considered and compared herein. The first one is based on the search for the orthogonal truncation errors and their transformation. The second is based on the orthogonalization of approximation errors obtained using the defect correction method and applies a superposition of numerical solutions. These options are intrusive. In third option (nonintrusive) the information regarding orthogonality of errors, which is crucial for the Prager&Synge approach method, is replaced by information that stems from the properties of the ensemble of numerical solutions, obtained by independent numerical algorithms. The values of the angle between the truncation errors on such ensemble or the distances between elements of the ensemble may be used to replace the orthogonality. The variant based on the width of the ensemble of independent numerical solutions does not require any additional a priori information and is the approximate nonintrusive version of the method based on the orthogonalization of approximation errors.

Intensities in Tm I emission series originating from a common upper level are measured using a Fourier transform spectrometer. The derived relative transition probabilities within each series are compared to the theoretical predictions obtained from large-scale calculations that combine configuration interaction with many-body perturbation theory. Moreover, the Tm I spectrum recorded in an external magnetic field is analyzed. Our theoretical results well describe the current measurements and show no more than a two-fold difference from previous experimental data on absolute transition probabilities. Additionally, Landé g factors, hyperfine structure constants, and atomic electric quadrupole moments for several levels of interest are computed and compared to experimental observations, where available.

Reconstructed tracks of muons produced in neutrino interactions provide the precise probe for the neutrino direction. Therefore, track-like events are a powerful tool to search for neutrino point sources. Recently, Baikal-GVD has demonstrated the first sample of low-energy neutrino candidate events extracted from the data of the season 2019 in a so-called single-cluster analysis - treating each cluster as an independent detector. In this paper, the extension of the track-like event analysis to a wider data set is discussed and the first high-energy track-like events are demonstrated. The status of multi-cluster track reconstruction and that of the event analysis are also discussed.

Baikal-GVD (Gigaton Volume Detector) is a neutrino telescope installed at a depth of 1366 m in Lake Baikal. The expedition of 2023 brought the number of optical modules in the array up to 3492 (including experimental strings). These optical modules detect the Cherenkov radiation from secondary charged particles coming from the neutrino interactions. Neutrinos produce different kinds of topologically distinct light signatures. Charged current muon neutrino interactions create an elongated track in the water. Charged and neutral current interactions of other neutrino flavors yield hadronic and electromagnetic cascades. The background in the neutrino cascade channel arises mainly due to discrete stochastic energy losses produced along atmospheric muon tracks. In this paper, a developed algorithm for the cascade event selection is presented.

The deployment of the Baikal-GVD deep underwater neutrino telescope is in progress now. About 3500 deep underwater photodetectors (optical modules) arranged into 12 clusters are operating in Lake Baikal. For increasing the efficiency of cascade-like neutrino event detection, the telescope deployment scheme was slightly changed. Namely, the inter-cluster distance was reduced for the newly deployed clusters and additional string of optical modules are added between the clusters. The first inter-cluster string was installed in 2022 and two such strings were installed in 2023. This paper presents a Monte Carlo estimate of the impact of these configuration changes on the cascade detection efficiency as well as technical implementation and results of in-situ tests of the inter-cluster strings.

We present the results of the two-year (2021-2022) monitoring of absorption and scattering lengths of light with wavelength 400-620 nm within the effective volume of the deep underwater neutrino telescope Baikal-GVD, which were measured by a device Baikal-5D No.2. The Baikal-5D No.2. was installed during the 2021 winter expedition at a depth of 1180 m. The absorption and scattering lengths were measured every week in 9 spectral points. The device Baikal-5D No.2 also has the ability to measure detailed scattering and absorption spectra. The data obtained make it possible to estimate the range of changes in the absorption and scattering lengths over a sufficiently long period of time and to investigate the relationship between the processes of changes in absorption and scattering. An analysis was made of changes in absorption and scattering spectra for the period 2021-2022.

We present a new procedure for time calibration of the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope. The track reconstruction quality depends on accurate measurements of arrival times of Cherenkov photons. Therefore, it is crucial to achieve a high precision in time calibration. For that purpose, in addition to other calibration methods, we employ a new procedure using atmospheric muons reconstructed in a single-cluster mode. The method is based on iterative determination of effective time offsets for each optical module. This paper focuses on the results of the iterative reconstruction procedure with time offsets from the previous iteration and the verification of the method developed. The theoretical muon calibration precision is estimated to be around 1.5-1.6ns.

The arrival direction of GVD210418CA is near the position of the well-known radio blazar TXS~0506+056, with the angular distance being within a 90\% directional uncertainty region of the Baikal-GVD measurement. The event was followed by a radio flare observed by the RATAN-600 radio telescope, further strengthening the case for the neutrino-blazar association.

We further explore the Baikal-GVD cascade dataset collected in 2018-2022, with the aim to identify possible associations between the Baikal-GVD neutrinos and known astrophysical sources. We leverage the relatively high angular resolution of the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope (2-3 deg.), made possible by the use of liquid water as the detection medium, enabling the study of astrophysical point sources even with cascade events. We estimate the telescope's sensitivity in the cascade channel for high-energy astrophysical sources and refine our analysis prescriptions using Monte-Carlo simulations. We primarily focus on cascades with energies exceeding 100 TeV, which we employ to search for correlation with radio-bright blazars. Although the currently limited neutrino sample size provides no statistically significant effects, our analysis suggests a number of possible associations with both extragalactic and Galactic sources. Specifically, we present an analysis of an observed triplet of neutrino candidate events in the Galactic plane, focusing on its potential connection with certain Galactic sources, and discuss the coincidence of cascades with several bright and flaring blazars.

In this paper, we consider the problem of pollution control in a system that undergoes regular regime shifts. We first show that the optimal policy of pollution abatement is periodic as well, and is described by the unique hybrid limit cycle. We next introduce the notion of an environmentally sustainable solution, and demonstrate that such a policy is the only one that yields the best possible trade-off between steadily achieving profit and ensuring environmental preservation. In contrast to that, the policy that is not environmentally sustainable eventually enters stagnation. To further illustrate our findings, we compare the optimal periodic solution with a myopic one. Interestingly enough, the myopic solution yields higher overall payoff in the short-run, but completely fails in the long-run, while the environmentally sustainable policy yields maximal payoff and preserves the environment over the infinite time interval.

We study the electron-loss-to-continuum (ELC) cusp experimentally and theoretically by comparing the ionization of U$^{89+}$ projectiles in collisions with N$_2$ and Xe targets, at a beam energy of 75.91 MeV/u. The coincidence measurement between the singly ionized projectile and the energy of the emitted electron is used to compare the shape of the ELC cusp at weak and strong perturbations. A significant energy shift for the centroid of the electron cusp is observed for the heavy target of Xe as compared to the light target of N$_2$. Our results provide a stringent test for fully relativistic calculations of double-differential cross sections performed in the first-order approximation and in the continuum-distorted-wave approach.

Most explanations of economic growth are based on knowledge spillovers, where the development of some technologies facilitates the enhancement of others. Empirical studies show that these spillovers can have a heterogeneous and rather complex structure. But, so far, little attention has been paid to the consequences of different structures of such cross-technology interactions: Is economic development more easily fostered by homogenous or heterogeneous interactions, by uni- or bidirectional spillovers? Using a detailed description of an r&d sector with cross-technology interactions embedded in a simple growth model, we analyse how the structure of spillovers influences growth prospects and growth patterns. We show that some type of interactions (e.g., one-way interactions) cannot induce exponential growth, whereas other structures can. Furthermore, depending on the structure of interactions, all or only some technologies will contribute to growth in the long run. Finally, some spillover structures can lead to complex growth patterns, such as technology transitions, where, over time, different technology clusters are the main engine of growth.

The Inverse Problem for the estimation of a point-wise approximation error occurring at the discretization and solving of the system of partial differential equations is addressed. The set of the differences between the numerical solutions is used as the input data. The analyzed solutions are obtained by the numerical algorithms of the distinct inner structure on the same grid. The approximation error is estimated by the Inverse Problem, which is posed in the variational statement with the zero order Tikhonov regularization. The numerical tests, performed for the two dimensional inviscid compressible flows corresponding to Edney-I and Edney-VI shock wave interference modes, are provided. The analyzed flowfields are computed using ten different numerical algorithms. The comparison of the estimated approximation error and the true error, obtained by subtraction of numerical and analytic solutions, is presented.

In slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge number larger than the critical value, $Z_{\rm cr} \approx 173$, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. Detection of the spontaneous emission of positrons would be the direct evidence of this fundamental phenomenon. However, the spontaneous emission is generally masked by the dynamical positron emission, which is induced by a strong time-dependent electric field created by the colliding nuclei. In our recent paper [I.A. Maltsev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 113401 (2019)] it has been shown that the spontaneous pair production can be observed via measurements of the pair-production probabilities for a given set of nuclear trajectories. In the present paper, we have significantly advanced this study by exploring additional aspects of the process we are interested in. We calculate the positron energy spectra and find that these spectra can give a clear signature of the transition from the subcritical to the supercritical regime. It is found that focusing on a part of the positron spectrum, which accounts for the energy region where the spontaneously created positrons can contribute, allows to get a much stronger evidence of the transition to the supercritical mode, making it very well pronounced in collisions, for example, of two uranium nuclei. The possibility of extending this study to collisions of bare nuclei with neutral atoms is also considered. The probability of a vacancy in the lowest-energy state of a quasimolecule which is formed in collisions of a bare U nucleus with neutral U and Cm atoms has been calculated. The relatively large values of this probability make such collisions suitable for observing the vacuum decay.

The truncation and approximation errors for the set of numerical solutions computed by methods based on the algorithms of different structure are calculated and analyzed for the case of the two-dimensional steady inviscid compressible flow. The truncation errors are calculated using a special postprocessor, while the approximation errors are obtained by the comparison of the numerical solution and the analytic one. The extent of the independence of errors for the numerical solutions may be estimated via the Pearson correlation coefficient that may be geometrically expressed by the angle between errors. Due to this reason, the angles between the approximation errors are computed and related with the corresponding angles between the truncation errors. The angles between the approximation errors are found to be far from zero that enables a posteriori estimation of the error norm. The analysis of the distances between these solutions provides another approach to the estimation of the error. The comparison of the error norms, obtained by these two procedures, is provided that demonstrates the acceptable values of their effectivity indices. The results of the approximation error norm estimation for the supersonic flows, containing shock waves, are presented. The measure concentration phenomenon and the algorithmic randomness give some insights into these results.

Based on these achievements, we explore a possibility to develop optical clocks using transitions between the ground and a low-lying excited state in the Cf$^{15+}$ and Cf$^{17+}$ ions. Using a high-accuracy relativistic method of calculation we predicted the wavelengths of clock transitions, calculated relevant atomic properties, and analyzed a number of systematic effects (such as the electric quadrupole-, micromotion-, and quadratic Zeeman shifts of the clock transitions) that affect the accuracy and stability of the optical clocks. We also calculated magnetic dipole hyperfine-structure constants of the clock states and the blackbody radiation shifts of the clock transitions.

(Quasi)resonance electron-capture processes in non-symmetrical $(Z_{\rm P} \simeq 2Z_{\rm T})$ heavy ion-atom collisions are studied employing a semiclassical atomic Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbital coupled-channel approach within an independent-particle model. %A special attention has been paid to study a role of the relativistic effects. Systematic calculations of the electron-capture cross sections of the target $K$-shell electrons to the $L$ subshells of the projectile have been carried out for the collisions of bare thorium $(Z_{\rm P}=90)$ and zinc $(Z_{\rm P}=30)$ nuclei with hydrogenlike ions $(Z_{\rm T}=36$-$47)$ and $(Z_{\rm T}=12$-$15)$, correspondingly. Strong relativistic effects, crucial for the case of Th$^{90+}$-Ru$^{43+}(1s)$ collisions in the low-energy regime, are found. Various one- and two-electron capture processes occurring in course of the collisions of the two-electron system Th$^{90+}$-Ru$^{42+}(1s^2)$ have been investigated in details in the wide range of collision energies $0.5$-$50$~MeV/u. The impact parameter dependencies of the double electron-capture processes are also presented. Our study demonstrates a very significant role of the relativistic effects for the processes, which becomes crucial in the low-energy regime.

We have developed a broadly-applicable approach that drastically increases the ability to accurately predict properties of complex atoms. We applied it to the case of Ir$^{17+}$, which is of particular interest for the development of novel atomic clocks with high sensitivity to the variation of the fine-structure constant and dark matter searches.
The clock transitions are weak and very difficult to identity without accurate theoretical predictions. In the case of Ir$^{17+}$, even stronger electric-dipole (E1) transitions eluded observation despite years of effort raising the possibility that theory predictions are grossly wrong. In this work, we provide accurate predictions of transition wavelengths and E1 transition rates in Ir$^{17+}$. Our results explain the lack of observation of the E1 transitions and provide a pathway towards detection of clock transitions. Computational advances demonstrated in this work are widely applicable to most elements in the periodic table and will allow to solve numerous problems in atomic physics, astrophysics, and plasma physics.

Special attention is paid to tests of QED in supercritical-field regime, which can be accessed in slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge number larger than the critical value, $Z_{\rm crit} \approx 173$. In the supercritical field, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. The search for topological excitations such as Majorana fermions has spurred interest in the boundaries between distinct quantum states. Here, we explore an interface between two prototypical phases of electrons with conceptually different ground states: the integer quantum Hall insulator and the s-wave superconductor. We find clear signatures of hybridized electron and hole states similar to chiral Majorana fermions, to which we refer as chiral Andreev edge states (CAES). They propagate along the interface in the direction determined by magnetic field and their interference can turn an incoming electron into an outgoing electron or a hole, depending on the phase accumulated by the CAES along their path. Our results demonstrate that these excitations can propagate and interfere over a significant length, opening future possibilities for their coherent manipulation.

If error magnitude ranging is known, the triangle inequality enables the estimation of the vicinity of the approximate solution that contains the exact one (exact solution enclosure). The analysis of distances between the numerical solutions enables discretization error ranging, if solutions errors are significantly different. Numerical tests conducted using the steady supersonic flows, governed by the two dimensional Euler equations, demonstrate the properties of the exact solution enclosure. The set of solutions generated by solvers of different orders of approximation is used. The success of this approach depends on the choice of metric.

A new method for calculations of electron-positron pair-creation probabilities in low-energy heavy-ion collisions is developed. The approach is based on the propagation of all one-electron states via the numerical solving of the time-dependent Dirac equation in the monopole approximation. The electron wave functions are represented as finite sums of basis functions constructed from B-splines using the dual-kinetic-balance technique. The calculations of the created particle numbers and the positron energy spectra are performed for the collisions of bare nuclei at the energies near the Coulomb barrier with the Rutherford trajectory and for different values of the nuclear charge and the impact parameter. To examine the role of the spontaneous pair creation the collisions with a modified velocity and with a time delay are also considered. The obtained results are compared with the previous calculations and the possibility of observation of the spontaneous pair creation is discussed.

A 82, 042701(2010)] is extended to collisions of ions with neutral atoms. The method employs the active electron approximation, in which only the active electron participates in the charge transfer and excitation processes while the passive electrons provide the screening DFT potential. The time-dependent Dirac wave function of the active electron is represented as a linear combination of atomic-like Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals, localized at the ions (atoms). The screening DFT potential is calculated using the overlapping densities of each ions (atoms), derived from the atomic orbitals of the passive electrons. The atomic orbitals are generated by solving numerically the one-center Dirac-Fock and Dirac-Fock-Sturm equations by means of a finite-difference approach with the potential taken as the sum of the exact reference ion (atom) Dirac-Fock potential and of the Coulomb potential from the other ion within the monopole approximation. The method developed is used to calculate the K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilties for the Ne$(1s^2 2s^2 2p^6)$ -- F$^{8+}(1s)$ collisions at the F$^{8+}(1s)$ projectile energies 130 keV/u and 230 keV/u. The obtained results are compared with experimental data and other theoretical calculations. The K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilities are also calculated for the Xe -- Xe$^{53+}(1s)$ collision.

This paper presents some relations for orthonormal bases in the Minkowski space and isotropic tetrads constructed from the vectors of these bases. As an example of an application of the obtained formulae, in particular recursion relations, a new method is proposed to calculate traces of Dirac $γ$-matrices in the Minkowski space. Compared to the classical algorithms, the new method results in more compact expressions for the traces. Specifically, it may be easily implemented as a simple yet efficient computer algorithm.

The article deals with a number of the existings variants of direct calculation of amplitudes of processes with polarized Dirac particles. It is shown, that all of them are special cases of one and the same mathematical scheme. The advantages and disadvantages of this scheme are considered. A new variant of the method of calculation of amplitudes, keeping all the advantages of this scheme, but free from disadvantages, is proposed. In particular, this variant is suitable for the evaluation of amplitudes of processes with interfering diagrams and does not need any additional calculations, that are necessary in the general case. Expressions for the amplitudes of processes involving both massive and massless particles are presented. These expressions make it possible to create in an easy way the computer programs for automatic calculation of amplitudes. The existing computer programs for calculation of amplitudes, their limitations and disadvantages are briefly considered.

Some Methods of Minimization of Calculations in High Energy Physics
Authors:
Alexander L. Bondarev
Abstract:
Two approaches to calculations' minimization in High Energy Physics are considered. The first one is the method of covariant calculations for the amplitudes of processes with polarized Dirac particles. The second one connects with the possibility to reduce the expressions for the traces of products of ten and more Dirac gamma-matrices.
