Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) increasingly leverage 'humanness' as a foundational design metaphor, adopting roles like 'assistants,' 'teachers,' and 'secretaries' to foster natural interactions. Yet, this approach can sometimes misalign user trust and reinforce societal stereotypes, leading to socio-technical challenges that might impede long-term engagement. This paper explores an alternative approach to navigate these challenges-incorporating non-human metaphors in VUI design. We report on a study with 240 participants examining the effects of human versus non-human metaphors on user perceptions within health and finance domains. Results indicate a preference for the human metaphor (doctor) over the non-human (health encyclopedia) in health contexts for its perceived enjoyability and likeability. In finance, however, user perceptions do not significantly differ between human (financial advisor) and non-human (calculator) metaphors. Importantly, our research reveals that the explicit awareness of a metaphor's use influences adoption intentions, with a marked preference for non-human metaphors when their metaphorical nature is not disclosed. These findings highlight context-specific conversation design strategies required in integrating non-human metaphors into VUI design, suggesting tradeoffs and design considerations that could enhance user engagement and adoption.

The conversational search task aims to enable a user to resolve information needs via natural language dialogue with an agent. In this paper, we aim to develop a conceptual framework of the actions and intents of users and agents explaining how these actions enable the user to explore the search space and resolve their information need. We outline the different actions and intents, before discussing key decision points in the conversation where the agent needs to decide how to steer the conversational search process to a successful and/or satisfactory conclusion. Essentially, this paper provides a conceptualization of the conversational search process between an agent and user, which provides a framework and a starting point for research, development and evaluation of conversational search agents.

In particular, the workshop will explore the topics such as: interaction design of voice-based conversational interfaces; the interplay between prosodic aspects (e.g., pitch variance, loudness, jitter) of TTS and its impact on voice perception. This workshop will serve as a platform on which to build a community that is better equipped to tackle the dynamic field of interactive TTS interfaces, which remains understudied, yet increasingly pertinent to everyday lives of users.

Manipulative design in user interfaces (conceptualized as dark patterns) has emerged as a significant impediment to the ethical design of technology and a threat to user agency and freedom of choice. While previous research focused on exploring these patterns in the context of graphical user interfaces, the impact of speech has largely been overlooked. We conducted a listening test (N = 50) to elicit participants' preferences regarding different synthetic voices that varied in terms of synthesis method (concatenative vs. neural) and prosodic qualities (speech pace and pitch variance), and then evaluated their impact in an online decision-making study (N = 101). Our results indicate a significant effect of voice qualities on the participant's choices, independently from the content of the available options. Our results also indicate that the voice's perceived engagement, ease of understanding, and domain fit directly translate to its impact on participants' behaviour in decision-making tasks.

Conversational user interfaces (CUIs) have become an everyday technology for people the world over, as well as a booming area of research. Advances in voice synthesis and the emergence of chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs), notably ChatGPT, have pushed CUIs to the forefront of human-computer interaction (HCI) research and practice. Now that these technologies enable an elemental level of usability and user experience (UX), we must turn our attention to higher-order human factors: trust and reliance. In this workshop, we aim to bring together a multidisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners invested in the next phase of CUI design. Through keynotes, presentations, and breakout sessions, we will share our knowledge, identify cutting-edge resources, and fortify an international network of CUI scholars. In particular, we will engage with the complexity of trust and reliance as attitudes and behaviours that emerge when people interact with conversational agents.

Applications of the Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) in the investigation of Fe-Cr alloys are reviewed. A high sensitivity of the hyperfine magnetic field to the presence of Cr atoms in the vicinity of the probe Fe atoms permits quantitative investigation of various aspects related both to the crystallographic as well as to the magnetic phase diagram of this alloy system. Concerning the former, presented is the relevance of MS for determining borders of the miscibility gap and kinetics of the phase decomposition, distinguishing between nucleation and growth and spinodal decomposition, identifying the sigma-phase and studying kinetics of its precipitation. Regarding the magnetic phase diagram, MS is useful for determining the Curie, the Néel and the spin-freezing temperature, hence studying paramagnetic-ferromagnetic, paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic-spin-glass transitions. An effect of different heat treatments, strain and irradiation with various particles on a distribution of Cr atoms in the Fe matrix is demonstrated, too. For bcc-FeCr alloys relevance of MS for determining changes in spin and charge densities at Fe-sites induced by neighboring Cr atoms is illustrated, as well as its usefulness in studying changes caused by a high-temperature sulphidation and oxidation. Concerning properties of sigma-FeCr alloys the application of MS for determining the Curie and Debye temperature is reviewed. Application of MS to study an effect of magnetism on the lattice dynamics of Fe atoms in sigma-FeCr is also exemplified. Last but not least, determining a magnetic texture and mechanical alloying is addressed.

The study was aimed at determination of the position of the Fe-rich border of the metastable miscibility gap (MMG) and of the solubility limit of Cr in iron at 858 K. Towards this end a Fe73.7Cr26.3 alloy was isothermally annealed at 858 K in vacuum up to 8144 hours and Mössbauer spectra were recorded at room temperature after every step of the annealing. Three spectral parameters viz. the average hyperfine field, <B>, the average isomer shift, <IS>, and the probability of the atomic configuration with no Cr atoms in the two-shell vicinity of the probe Fe atoms, P(0,0), gave evidence that the transformation process takes place in two stages. All three parameters could have been well described in terms of the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov equation, yielding kinetics parameters. The first stage, associated with the phase decomposition, proceeded much faster than the second stage, associated with the alpha-to-sigma phase transformation. The most reliable estimation of the position of the MMG and that of the value of the Cr solubility limit was obtained from the annealing time dependence of <B>, namely 24.5 at.% Cr for the former and 20.3 at.% Cr for the latter. A comparison of these figures with the recent phase diagrams pertinent to Fe-Cr system was done.

The common feature of all these metallic systems is itinerant character of their magnetism. Two spectral parameters relevant to the lattice dynamics viz. the center shift, CS, and/or the recoil-free fraction, f, are considered as figures of merit. Their temperature dependences show anomalies at magnetic ordering temperatures giving evidence that that vibrations in the magnetic phase are different than those in the paramagnetic phase. The lower the magnetic ordering temperature, the stronger the difference.

The compounds were found to crystallize in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group (eta-phase). The collected data revealed that dynamics of the Fe atoms (harmonic in entire temperature range) is significantly different that Al atoms. For the latter strong anharmonicity was evidenced. Moreover, it was found that partial filling of the different Al sites leads to occurrence of low and high symmetry coordination of Fe atoms, which was reflected in occurrence of two distinct doublets in Mössbauer spectra. All spectral parameters of the doublets as well as the Debye temperature, force constant, kinetic and potential energies of vibrations were determined. Those results revealed significant differences between both alloys, likely originating from approaching the stability boundary of the eta-phase for Fe-Al 72.17 at.pct alloy.

The SG phase is magnetically heterogeneous, because two sub phases can be identified i.e. with the strong (SG-SI) and the weak (SG-WI) irreversibility. The ireversibility, T_irr and the crossover, T_cros, temperatures were quantitatively analysed using the mean-field theory and φ_irr=1.6(2) and φ_cros=0.91(9) values were obtained. A qualitative agreement with the Gabay-Toulouse model was reached. The isothermal magnetization measurements point to a soft magnetic behaviour of the studied sample. The γ critical exponent was determined with the Kouvel-Fisher approach yielding the value of γ=1.0(1) in line with the mean-field theory.

On the other hand, it is used in food industry as a coloring agent, in cosmetic industry for skin and nail conditioning and metallurgy. Despite of wide range of applications its physical properties were not studied extensively. In this study, Fe-gluconate with three different amount of water viz. x=2 (fully hydrated, 0 < x < 2 (intermediate) and x=0 (dry) was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopic (MS) methods. The former in the temperature range of 20-300 K, and the latter at 295 K. Based on the XRD measurements crystallographic structures were determined: monoclinic (space group I2) for the hydrated sample and triclinic (space group P1) for the dry sample. The partially hydrated sample was two-phased. Unit cells parameters for both structures show strong, very complex and non-monotonic temperature dependences. Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements gave evidence that iron in all samples exist in form of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions. The amount of the latter equals to ca.30% in the hydrated sample and to ca.20% in the dry one.

Low temperature Mössbauer spectroscopic and magnetization measurements were performed on a crystalline sample of Fe-gluconate. Fe atoms were revealed to exist in two phases i.e. a major (90-94 pct.) and a minor (6-10 pct.). Based on values of spectral parameters the former can be regarded as ferrous and the latter as ferric. A sub spectrum associated with the ferric phase shows a significant broadening below ca. 30 K corresponding to 7.5 kGs. A magnetic origin of the effect was confirmed by the magnetization measurements. Evidence on the effect of the magnetism on the lattice vibrations of Fe atoms in both components was found. The Debye temperature, T_D, associated with the vibrations of Fe2+ ions is by a factor of about 2 smaller in the temperature range below ca. 30 K than the one determined from the data measured above ca. 30 K. Interestingly, the T_D-value found for the Fe3+ ions from the data recorded below ca.30 K is about two times smaller than the corresponding value determined for the Fe2+ ions.

The increase in the prevalence of mental health problems has coincided with a growing popularity of health related social networking sites. Regardless of their therapeutic potential, On-line Support Groups (OSGs) can also have negative effects on patients. In this work we propose a novel methodology to automatically verify the presence of therapeutic factors in social networking websites by using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. The methodology is evaluated on On-line asynchronous multi-party conversations collected from an OSG and Twitter. The results of the analysis indicate that therapeutic factors occur more frequently in OSG conversations than in Twitter conversations. Moreover, the analysis of OSG conversations reveals that the users of that platform are supportive, and interactions are likely to lead to the improvement of their emotional state. We believe that our method provides a stepping stone towards automatic analysis of emotional states of users of online platforms. Possible applications of the method include provision of guidelines that highlight potential implications of using such platforms on users' mental health, and/or support in the analysis of their impact on specific individuals.

Both magnetization curves exhibited well-defined peaks around T_N =72.3 K whose positions were H-independent, so they were identified as the compound's Néel temperature. The existence of irreversibility which decreases with H testify to a re-entrant character of magnetism in the studied compound. An increase of both MFC and MZFC observed below TN likely indicates a mixed i.e. ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ground magnetic state of the studied system.

TD was found to be equal to 491 (11) K for the sites A and C, and to 403 (3) K the site B. The smaller value of T_D coincides with the smaller values of the hyperfine field, H. Changes in H caused by one Si atom present in the 1NN have been determined as ca.13 kOe for Fe atoms occupying the A and C sites and ca.54 kOe for Fe atoms present on the B sites. These changes have been also expressed in terms of the underlying number of polarized s-like electrons, dNs. For the Fe atoms situated on the A and C sites dNs=0.03 was found while for those occupying the B sites dNs=0.17.

Kinetics of phase decomposition accompanied by precipitation of sigma-phase in a Fe73.7Cr26.3 alloy isothermally annealed at 832 K was studied by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy. Two stage decomposition process has been revealed by three different quantities viz. the average hyperfine field, <H>, the short-range parameter, alpha1, and the probability of atomic configuration with no Cr atoms within the first two coordination shells around the probe Fe atoms, P(0,0). The first stage, that has terminated after ca.300 h of annealing, has been associated with the decomposition into Fe-rich phase in which the concentration of Cr, determined as 20.9 at.%, can be interpreted as the border of the metastable miscibility gap at 832 K. The second stage can be regarded as a continuation of the phase decomposition process combined with a precipitation of sigma. The three relevant parameters for this stage have also saturation-like behavior vs. annealing time and the saturation can be interpreted as termination of the two processes. The concentration of Cr in the Fe-rich phase has been determined as 19.8 at.% and this value can be regarded as the limit of Cr solubility in iron at 832 K. Both stages of the kinetics were found to be in line with the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolgomorov equation yielding values of the rate constant and the Avrami exponent. The activation energy of the second-stage process was determined to be by ca.12 kJ/mol higher.

The obtained results provide evidences for re-entrant magnetism in the investigated sample. The magnetic phase diagrams in the H-T plane have been outlined based on characteristic temperatures determined from the DC and AC measurements. The phase diagrams are similar yet not identical. The main difference is that in the DC diagram constructed there are two cross-over transitions within the strong-irreversibility spin-glass state, whereas in the AC susceptibility based diagram only one transition is observed. The border lines (irreversibility, cross-over) can be described in terms of the power laws.

Magnetization measurements were carried out in the in field-cooled (FC) and in zero-field-cooled (ZFC) conditions versus temperature, T, and external magnetic field, H, on a sigma-phase Fe47Mo53 compound. Analysis of the measured M_FC and M_ZFC curves yielded values of characteristic temperatures: magnetic ordering (Curie) temperature, T_C, irreversibility temperature, T_ir, temperature of the maximum in M_ZFC, T_m, identified as the Nėel (T_N) temperature, and cross-over temperature, T_co. Based on these temperatures a magnetic phase diagram in the H-T plane was outlined. The field dependences of the characteristic temperatures viz. of the irreversibility and of the cross-over temperatures were described in terms of a power law with the exponent 0.5(1). In the whole range of H i.e. up to 800 Oe, except the one H>50 Oe, a rare double re-entrant transition viz. PM-FM-AF-SG takes place. For small fields i.e. H<50 Oe a single re-entrant transition viz. PM-FM-SG is revealed.

According to recent studies, currently the usage of VPAs is constrained to basic tasks such as checking facts, playing music, and obtaining weather updates. In this paper, we present results of a survey (N = 118) that analyses usage of VPAs by frequent and infrequent users. We investigate how usage experience, performance expectations, and privacy concerns differ between these two groups. The results indicate that, compared with infrequent users, frequent users of VPAs are more satisfied with their assistants, more eager to use them in a variety of settings, yet equally concerned about their privacy.

C14 Laves phase Nb0.975Fe2.025 compound was investigated by means of the Mössbauer spectroscopy. Spectra were recorded in the temperature range of 5-300K. Their analysis in terms of three sub spectra yielded information on magnetic and lattice dynamical properties of Fe atoms regularly occupying 2a and 6h lattice sites and, excessively, 4f sites. No indication of magnetism was observed down to the temperature of T=ca.50K, and spectral parameters viz. center shift, CS, and the main component of the electric field gradient, Vzz, behave regularly. In particular, analysis of CS(T) in terms of the Debye model yielded the following values of the Debye temperature, T_D: 453(5) K for the site 6h, 544(10) K for the site 2a, 479(4) K for the weighted average over 6h and 2a sites, and 363(35) K for the site 4f. Below ca.50K anomalous behavior was observed: a broadening of the spectrum appeared indicating thereby a transition into a magnetic phase. Analysis of a temperature dependence of the hyperfine field, B, associated with the 6h and 2a sub spectra yielded the magnetic ordering temperature T_C1=ca.50K for the former and T_C2=ca.31K for the latter. The maximum values of the hyperfine field at 5K, Bo, were 8.2 kGs and 3.3 kGs, respectively. The Bo-values were used to estimate values the underlying magnetic moments, m_Fe(6h)=0.055-0.065 Bohr magneton and m_Fe(2a)=0.02-0.025 Bohr magneton. Noteworthy, they are over one order of magnitude lower than those theoretically calculated. The CS and Vzz parameters showed anomalies in the magnetic phase, in particular the former exhibited a strong departure from the Debye model prediction testifying to a significant effect of magnetism on the lattice vibrations.

They were compared with previously obtained spectra for parent compounds EuFe2As2 and CaFe2As2. It was found that substitution beyond the Fe-As layers does not lead to the rotation (canting) of the Eu2+ magnetic moments and does not generate Eu3+ states. On the other hand, re-entrant superconductor exhibits rotation (canting) of the Eu2+ moments on the c-axis of the unit cell leading to the transferred hyperfine magnetic field on iron nuclei. Divalent europium orders magnetically within the bulk of the re-entrant superconducting phase. The re-entrant superconductor remains in the inhomogeneous state close to the ground state with about 27 % of the volume being free of 3d magnetism, while the remainder exhibits weak spin density wave. Those two regions slightly differ by the electric field gradient and electron density on iron nuclei.

Regarding the AC susceptibility, both real and imaginary components were registered as a function of increasing temperature in the interval of 2 K - 150 K at the frequencies of the oscillating field, f, from 3 Hz up to 999 Hz. An influence of the external DC magnetic field, H, on the temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility was investigated, too. The measurements clearly demonstrated that the magnetism of the studied sample is weak, itinerant and has a reentrant character. Based on the obtained results a magnetic phase diagram has been constructed in the H-T coordinates.

Lattice dynamics in a sigma-Fe60V40 compound, which shows a re-entrant magnetism and orders ferromagnetic ally at ca. 170K, was investigated with the Mossbauer spectroscopy in the temperature interval of 5-300 K. Two relevant spectral parameters viz. the average center shift, <CS>, and the relative recoil-free fraction, f/fo, were explored. The former yielded the Debye temperature, T_D1, and the mean-square velocity of vibration, <v^2>, while the latter T_D2 and the mean-square amplitude of vibrations, <x^2>. Significant differences in the lattice-dynamical behaviors in the magnetic and paramagnetic phases were revealed. In particular, the values of T_D were notably lower and those of f/fo greatly higher in the former. This anomalous result has likely its origin in a remarkably high inharmonic contribution to the vibrations found for the ground magnetic state (spin-glass). Especially anomalous behavior vs. temperature exhibits <x^2> where four well defined ranges could have been identified and ascribed to the paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and two spin-glass phases. Linear correlations between <v^2>-<x^2> were found within each of the four ranges. They enabled determination of force constants, hence a change of the potential energy, Ep, in each of the ranges. The total change of Ep=30 meV while the corresponding one of the kinetic energy, determined from the knowledge of <v^2>, was Ek=21 meV. The lack of balance between Ep and Ek follows from the anharmonic lattice-dynamical behavior observed in the spin-glass state. The results give a strong evidence that magnetism can significantly affect the lattice dynamics.

Magnetic properties of a sigma-phase Fe60V40 intermetallic compound were studied by means of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetocaloric effect measurements. The compound is a soft magnet yet it was found to behave like a re-entrant spin-glass system. The magnetic ordering temperature was found to be T_C ca.170 K, while the spin-freezing temperature was ca.164 K. Its relative shift per decade of ac frequency was 0.002, a value smaller than that typical of canonical spin-glasses. Magnetic entropy change, DeltaS, in the vicinity of T_C was determined for magnetic field, H, ranging between 5 and 50 kOe. Analysis of DeltaS in terms of the power law yielded the critical exponent, n, vs. temperature with the minimum value of 0.75 at T_C, while from the analysis of a relative shift of the maximum value of DeltaS with the field a critical exponent Delta=1.7 was obtained. Based on scaling laws relationships values of other two exponents viz. betha=0.6 and gamma=1 were determined.

The effect of He+ ion irradiation on a distribution of Cr atoms in model (EFDA) Fe(100-x)Cr(x) (x=5.8, 10.75, 15.15) was studied by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The alloys were irradiated to the dose of 1.2E16 ions per cm2 (7.5 dpa) with He+ of 0.25 and 2.0 MeV. The distribution of Cr atoms within the first two coordination shells around the probe Fe atoms was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley short-range order parameters alpha1 (first-neighbour shell, 1NN), alpha2 (second-neighbour shell, 2NN) and alpha12 (1NN+2NN. In non-irradiated alloys alpha1 was positive and alpha2 was negative for all three samples which indicates an ordering of Cr atoms. Yet, the value of alpha12 were close to zero, i.e. the distribution of Cr atoms averaged over the first two coordination shells around the probe Fe atoms, was random. The effect of the irradiation of the Fe5Cr sample is similar for the two energies of the He+ projectiles viz. increase of number of Cr atoms in the 1NN and decrease in the 2NN shell. Consequently, the degree of the ordering increased. For the other two samples, the effect of the irradiation depends on the composition, and it is stronger for the less energetic ions where, in the case of Fe10Cr, the disordering disappeared and some traces of Cr clustering (alpha12 weakly positive) can be seen. In the Fe15Cr sample the clustering is clear. In the samples irradiated with 2.0 MeV ions the ordering also survived in the samples with x=10.75 and 15.15, although its degree became smaller than in the Fe5Cr sample. Small changes in the magnetic texture were revealed.

Magnetization measurements were performed on two sigma-phase samples of Fe(100-x)V(x) (x=35.5, 34.1) vs. temperature, T, and in DC magnetic field, of various amplitudes. Using three characteristic temperatures, magnetic phase diagrams in the H-T plane have been designed testifying to a re-entrant character of magnetism. The ground magnetic state, a spin glass (SG), was evidenced to be composed of two sub phases: one with a weak irreversibility and the other with a strong irreversibility. Two critical lines were reconstructed within the SG state. Both of them show a crossover from the Gabay-Toulouse behavior (low field) to a linear and/or quasi-Almeida-Touless behavior. A strong difference in the effect of the applied magnetic field on the SG phase in the two samples was revealed.

Abstract:
Fe-gluconate was studied by means of the Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature interval of 80-305K. The measured spectra were analyzed in terms of two subspectra and, alternatively, two distributions of the quadrupole splitting. The major component (ca.85%) was identified as due to high-spin Fe2+ ions while the identification of the minor component (ca.15%) was not unique: some characteristics…

The measured spectra were analyzed in terms of two subspectra and, alternatively, two distributions of the quadrupole splitting. The major component (ca.85%) was identified as due to high-spin Fe2+ ions while the identification of the minor component (ca.15%) was not unique: some characteristics are in favour of the high-spin Fe3+ state while other ones are consistent with the low-spin Fe2+ state. Values of the Debye temperature were determined for both phases from a temperature dependence of the center shift as well as from that of the spectral area. The force constant for the high-spin ferrous atoms was evaluated to be equal to 44 N/m (243 cm-1).

Clear evidence was found that the ground magnetic state of the samples is mixed i.e. constituted by two phases: a spin glass (SG) and a ferromagnet (FM), hence the magnetism of the investigated samples can be regarded as re-entrant (RSG). Based on the present data, previously reported magnetic phase diagram has been upgraded [J. Przewoznik, S. M. Dubiel,J. Alloy. Comp., 630 (2015) 222].

Their analysis in terms of the hyperfine distribution protocol yielded the average hyperfine field, <B>, the average center shift, <CS>, and the spectral area, A. The magnetic ordering temperature, T_C=312.5(5) K was determined from the temperature dependence of <B>, and the Debye temperature, T_D, from the temperature dependence of <CS> and the relative spectral area. The value obtained from the former was 403(17) K and that from the latter 374(2) K. The value of the force constant was determined. The lattice dynamics of Fe atoms was described in terms of the kinetic, E_k, and the potential energy, E_p.

An evidence was found that its magnetism shows features characteristic of a reentrant behavior viz. two transitions: first at TC ca.312K from the paramagnetic state into the collinear ferromagnetic one, and second at Tf ca.302K to a mixed state (sometimes termed as a ferromagnetic re-entrant spin glass) which, finally, at a lower temperature (TRSG ca.60K) transforms to a state where replica symmetry is broken. The frequency dependence of Tf is lower than that of canonical spin glasses, a feature, that in the light of a high concentration of magnetic carriers, can be understood in terms of a weak coupling between magnetic clusters.

XRD and SEM were used to structurally characterize the samples whereas MS permitted phase analysis as well as determination of the Debye temperature, Theta_D. Concerning the latter, an enhancement relative to bulk Theta_D-values was revealed in the range of ca. 40 < x <50. In a sample of Fe55.5Cr44.5 two phases were detected viz. (1) crystalline and magnetic with Theta_D=572(56) K and (2) amorphous and paramagnetic with Theta_D=405(26) K.

A clear-cut evidence was found that the sample orders magnetically at Tc=23.5 K and its ground magnetic state is constituted by a spin glass. The temperature at which the zero-field cooled magnetization has its maximum decreases with an external magnetic field in line with the Gabay-Toulouse prediction. The temperature at which the AC magnetic susceptibility has its maximum does not depend on frequency which, in the light of the mean-field theory, testifies to very long magnetic interactions.

Effect of a quenching medium (water, liquid nitrogen and block of brass) on a short-range ordering in Fe(100-x)Cr(x) (x less than 19) alloys was studied with the Moessbauer spectroscopy. The distribution of Cr atoms was expressed in terms of the Cowley-Warren short-range order (SRO) parameters: alpha1 for the first neighbor-shell, alpha2 for the second neighbor-shell and alpha12 for both neighbor-shells. It was revealed that none of the quenching media resulted in a random distribution of atoms, yet the degree of randomness was the highest for the samples quenched onto the block of brass. The quenching into water and liquid nitrogen caused a partial oxidation of samples surface accompanied by a chromium depletion of the bulk. Quantitative analysis of various phases in the studied samples both in their bulk as well as in pre surface zones was carried out.

Systematic experimental (vibrating sample magnetometry) and theoretical (electronic structure calculations using charge and spin self-consistent Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green function method) studies were performed on a series of intermetallic sigma-phase Fe(100-x)Re(x) (x = 43-53) compounds. Clear evidence was found that all investigated samples exhibit magnetism with an ordering temperature ranging between 65 K for x = 43 and 23 K for x = 53. The magnetism was revealed to be itinerant and identified as a spin-glass (SG) possibly having a re-entrant character. The SG was found to be heterogeneous viz. two regimes could be distinguished as far as irreversibility in temperature dependence of magnetization is concerned: (1) of a weak irreversibility and (2) of a strong one. According to the theoretical calculations the main contribution to the magnetism comes from Fe atoms occupying all five sub lattices. Re atoms have rather small moments. However, the calculated average magnetic moments are highly (ferromagnetic ordering model) or moderately (antiparallel ordering model) overestimated relative to the experimental data.
