A directional regularization method for the limited-angle Helsinki Tomography Challenge using the Core Imaging Library (CIL)

The challenge focused on reconstructing 2D phantom shapes from limited-angle computed tomography (CT) data. The CIL team designed and implemented five reconstruction methods using CIL (https://ccpi.ac.uk/cil/), an open-source Python package for tomographic imaging. The CIL team adopted a model-based reconstruction strategy, unique to this challenge with all other teams relying on deep-learning techniques. The CIL algorithms showcased exceptional performance, with one algorithm securing the third place in the competition. The best-performing algorithm employed careful CT data pre-processing and an optimization problem with single-sided directional total variation regularization combined with isotropic total variation and tailored lower and upper bounds. The reconstructions and segmentations achieved high quality for data with angular ranges down to 50 degrees, and in some cases acceptable performance even at 40 and 30 degrees. This study highlights the effectiveness of model-based approaches in limited-angle tomography and emphasizes the importance of proper algorithmic design leveraging on available prior knowledge to overcome data limitations. Enhanced hyperspectral tomography for bioimaging by spatiospectral reconstruction

Conventionally, because the photons detected at each pixel are distributed across as many as 200 energy channels, energy-selective images are… ▽ More Here we apply hyperspectral bright field imaging to collect computed tomographic images with excellent energy resolution (800 eV), applying it for the first time to map the distribution of stain in a fixed biological sample through its characteristic K-edge. Conventionally, because the photons detected at each pixel are distributed across as many as 200 energy channels, energy-selective images are characterised by low count-rates and poor signal-to-noise ratio. This means high X-ray exposures, long scan times and high doses are required to image unique spectral markers. Here, we achieve high quality energy-dispersive tomograms from low dose, noisy datasets using a dedicated iterative reconstruction algorithm. This exploits the spatial smoothness and inter-channel structural correlation in the spectral domain using two carefully chosen regularisation terms. For a multi-phase phantom, a reduction in scan time of 36 times is demonstrated. Spectral analysis methods including K-edge subtraction and absorption step-size fitting are evaluated for an ex vivo, single (iodine)-stained biological sample, where low chemical concentration and inhomogeneous distribution can affect soft tissue segmentation and visualisation. The reconstruction algorithms are available through the open-source Core Imaging Library. In particular Bragg edge positions provide crystallographic information and therefore enable the identification o… ▽ More Time-of-flight neutron imaging offers complementary attenuation contrast to X-ray computed tomography (CT), coupled with the ability to extract additional information from the variation in attenuation as a function of neutron energy (time of flight) at every point (voxel) in the image. In particular Bragg edge positions provide crystallographic information and therefore enable the identification of crystalline phases directly. Here we demonstrate Bragg edge tomography with high spatial and spectral resolution. We propose a new iterative tomographic reconstruction method with a tailored regularisation term to achieve high quality reconstruction from low-count data, where conventional filtered back-projection (FBP) fails. The regularisation acts in a separated mode for spatial and spectral dimensions and favours characteristic piece-wise constant and piece-wise smooth behaviour in the respective dimensions. The proposed method is compared against FBP and a state-of-the-art regulariser for multi-channel tomography on a multi-material phantom. The proposed new regulariser which accommodates specific image properties outperforms both conventional and state-of-the-art methods and therefore facilitates Bragg edge fitting at the voxel level. The proposed method requires significantly shorter exposure to retrieve features of interest. This in turn facilitates more efficient usage of expensive neutron beamline time and enables the full utilisation of state-of-the-art high resolution detectors. △ Less

Quantum numbers of the $X(3872)$ state and orbital angular momentum in its $ρ^0 Jψ$ decay

Abstract: Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time… ▽ More Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. Observation of the decay $B_s^0\to\bar{D}^0φ$

Model-independent search for CP violation in D0 to K-K+pi-pi+ and D0 to pi-pi+pi+pi- decays

The search is carried out with a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1 collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 9.1%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 6.5% observed. The phase space of the pi-pi+pi+pi- final state is partitioned into 128 bins, each bin with approximately 2500 decays. The $p$-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 41%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 5.5% observed. Measurement of form-factor independent observables in the decay $B^{0} \to K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$

Abstract: We present a measurement of form-factor independent angular observables in the decay \mbox{$B^0\to K^{*}(892)^{0}μ^+ μ^-$}. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV. First measurement of time-dependent CP violation in Bs -> K+K- decays

Around 1.8x10^6 candidate events are selected of the type $B^0_{(s)} \to D^-_{(s)} μ^+$ (+ anything), where about half are from peaking and combinatorial backgrounds. To determine the B decay times, a correction is required for the momentum carried by missing particles, which is performed using a simulation-based statistical method. Associated production of muons or mesons allows us to tag the initial-state flavour and so to resolve oscillations due to mixing. We obtain Δm_s = (17.93 \pm 0.22 (stat) \pm 0.15 (syst)) ps^{-1}, Δm_d = (0.503 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.013 (syst)) ps^{-1}. The hypothesis of no oscillations is rejected by the equivalent of 5.8 standard deviations for $B^0_s$ and 13.0 standard deviations for $B^0$. Observation of a resonance in $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decays at low recoil

Abstract: A broad peaking structure is observed in the dimuon spectrum of $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decays in the kinematic region where the kaon has a low recoil against the dimuon system. The structure is consistent with interference between the $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decay and a resonance and has a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations. These limits are a factor of twenty lower than those set by previous experiments. Lower bounds on the Pati-Salam leptoquark masses are also calculated, $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 107$ TeV/c$^2$ and $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 126$ TeV/c$^2$ at 95% C.L., and are a factor of two higher than the previous bounds. △ Less

The $D_1(2420)^0$ resonance is observed in the $D^{*+}π^-$ final state and the $D^*_2(2460)$ resonance is observed in the $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states. For both resonances, their properties and spin-parity assignments are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Abstract: Prompt production of charmonium $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons is studied using proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$TeV. Precision measurement of the Lambda_b baryon lifetime

Abstract: The ratio of the Λb baryon lifetime to that of the B0 meson is measured using 1.0/fb of integrated luminosity in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The Λb baryon is observed for the first time in the decay mode Λb -> J/ψpK-, while the B0 meson decay used is the well known B0 -> J/ψpi+K- mode, where the pi+ K- mass is consistent with that of the K*0(892) meson. A yield of $30 \pm 6$ $B_s^0 \rightarrow (K^+K^-)(K^-π^+)$ decays is found in the mass windows $1012.5 < M(K^+K^-) < 1026.5 MeV/c^2$ and $746 < M(K^-π^+)< 1046 MeV/c^2$. The signal yield is found to be dominated by $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays, and the corresponding branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}) = (1.10 \pm 0.24 (stat) \pm 0.14 (syst) \pm 0.08 (f_d/f_s)) \times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the ratio of fragmentation fractions $f_d/f_s$ which accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. The significance of $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ signal is 6.1 standard deviations. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays is found to be $f_0 = 0.51 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.07 (syst)$. △ Less

The significance of $A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}K^+K^-)$ exceeds three standard deviations and is the first evidence of an inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetry in charmless three-body $B$ decays. Measurement of the CKM angle gamma from a combination of B->Dh analyses

Abstract: A combination of three LHCb measurements of the CKM angle gamma is presented. The decays B->DK and B->Dpi are used, where D denotes an admixture of D0 and D0-bar mesons, decaying into K+K-, pi+pi-, K+-pi-+, K+-pi-+pi+-pi-+, KSpi+pi-, or KSK+K- final states. All measurements use a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The combination of results from B->DK and B->Dpi decays gives a best-fit value of gamma = 72.6 deg and the confidence intervals gamma in [55.4,82.3] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [40.2,92.7] deg at 95% CL are set. The following rati… ▽ More The decays $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+$ and $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^{*+}$ are observed for the first time using a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3$fb^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$=7 and 8 TeV. The statistical significance for both signals is in excess of 9 standard deviations. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured to be $BR(B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+)/BR(B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψπ+) = 2.90 \pm 0.57 \pm 0.24$, $BR(B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^{*+}) / BR (B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+) = 2.37 \pm 0.56 \pm 0.10$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The mass of the \Bc meson is measured to be $m_{B^+_c} = 6276.28 \pm 1.44 (stat) \pm 0.36(syst) MeV/c^2$, using the $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+$ decay mode. △ Less

Abstract: Searches for the lepton flavour violating decay $τ^-\rightarrow μ^-μ^+μ^-$ and the lepton flavour and baryon number violating decays $τ^-\rightarrow \bar{p}μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^-\rightarrow pμ^-μ^-$ have been carried out using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, taken by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. Abstract: This paper reports the first measurement of the effective B_s^0 -> J/ψ K_S^0 lifetime and an updated measurement of its time-integrated branching fraction. Abstract: The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. In a sample… ▽ More The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. In a sample of 27\,617 B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays, where the dominant contribution comes from B_s^0\to J/ψφ decays, these parameters are measured to be φ_s = 0.07 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s \equiv (Γ_L+Γ_H)/2 = 0.663 \pm 0.005 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_L -Γ_H = 0.100 \pm 0.016 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst) & ps^-1, corresponding to the single most precise determination of φ_s, ΔΓ_s and Γ_s. The result of performing a combined analysis with B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives φ_s = 0.01 \pm 0.07 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s = 0.661 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s = 0.106 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.007 (syst) & ps^-1. Candidates are identified by reconstructing… ▽ More Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on $\tanβ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the $m_{h^0}^\mathrm{max}$ scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP-odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV. △ Less
