In this paper we introduce a new measure of conditional dependence between two random vectors ${\boldsymbol X}$ and ${\boldsymbol Y}$ given another random vector $\boldsymbol Z$ using the ball divergence. Our measure characterizes conditional independence and does not require any moment assumptions. We propose a consistent estimator of the measure using a kernel averaging technique and derive its asymptotic distribution. Using this statistic we construct two tests for conditional independence, one in the model-${\boldsymbol X}$ framework and the other based on a novel local wild bootstrap algorithm. In the model-${\boldsymbol X}$ framework, which assumes the knowledge of the distribution of ${\boldsymbol X}|{\boldsymbol Z}$, applying the conditional randomization test we obtain a method that controls Type I error in finite samples and is asymptotically consistent, even if the distribution of ${\boldsymbol X}|{\boldsymbol Z}$ is incorrectly specified up to distance preserving transformations. More generally, in situations where ${\boldsymbol X}|{\boldsymbol Z}$ is unknown or hard to estimate, we design a double-bandwidth based local wild bootstrap algorithm that asymptotically controls both Type I error and power. We illustrate the advantage of our method, both in terms of Type I error and power, in a range of simulation settings and also in a real data example. A consequence of our theoretical results is a general framework for studying the asymptotic properties of a 2-sample conditional $V$-statistic, which is of independent interest.

Nearest neighbor classifier is arguably the most simple and popular nonparametric classifier available in the literature. However, due to the concentration of pairwise distances and the violation of the neighborhood structure, this classifier often suffers in high-dimension, low-sample size (HDLSS) situations, especially when the scale difference between the competing classes dominates their location difference. Several attempts have been made in the literature to take care of this problem. In this article, we discuss some of these existing methods and propose some new ones. We carry out some theoretical investigations in this regard and analyze several simulated and benchmark datasets to compare the empirical performances of proposed methods with some of the existing ones.

We consider non-Hermitian (NH) analog of a second-order topological insulator, protected by chiral symmetry, in the presence of second-nearest neighbor hopping elements to theoretically investigate the interplay between long-range and topological order away from Hermiticity. In addition to the four zero-energy corner modes present in the first nearest neighbor hopping model, we uncover that the second nearest neighbor hopping introduces another topological phase with sixteen zero-energy corner modes. Importantly, the NH effects are manifested in altering the Hermitian phase boundaries for both the models. While comparing the complex energy spectrum under open boundary conditions, and bi-orthogonalized quadrupolar winding number (QWN) in real space, we resolve the apparent anomaly in the bulk boundary correspondence of the NH system as compared to the Hermitian counterpart by incorporating the effect of non-Bloch form of momentum into the mass term. The above invariant is also capable of capturing the phase boundaries between the two different topological phases where the degeneracy of the corner modes is evident, as exclusively observed for the second nearest neighbor model.

We develop a test for spherical symmetry of a multivariate distribution $P$ that works even when the dimension of the data $d$ is larger than the sample size $n$. We propose a non-negative measure $ζ(P)$ such that $ζ(P)=0$ if and only if $P$ is spherically symmetric. We construct a consistent estimator of $ζ(P)$ using the data augmentation method and investigate its large sample properties. The proposed test based on this estimator is calibrated using a novel resampling algorithm. Our test controls the Type-I error, and it is consistent against general alternatives. We also study its behaviour for a sequence of alternatives $(1-δ_n) F+δ_n G$, where $ζ(G)=0$ but $ζ(F)>0$, and $δ_n \in [0,1]$. When $\lim\supδ_n<1$, for any $G$, the power of our test converges to unity as $n$ increases. However, if $\lim\supδ_n=1$, the asymptotic power of our test depends on $\lim n(1-δ_n)^2$. We establish this by proving the minimax rate optimality of our test over a suitable class of alternatives and showing that it is Pitman efficient when $\lim n(1-δ_n)^2>0$. Moreover, our test is provably consistent for high-dimensional data even when $d$ is larger than $n$. Our numerical results amply demonstrate the superiority of the proposed test over some state-of-the-art methods.

Condensed matter systems are continuously subjected to dissipation, which often has adverse effects on quantum phenomena. We focus on the impact of dissipation on a superconducting Rashba nanowire. We reveal that the system can still host Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) with a finite lifetime in the presence of dissipation. Most interestingly, dissipation can also generate two kinds of dissipative boundary states: four robust zero-modes (RZMs) and two MZMs, in the regime where the non-dissipative system is topologically trivial. The MZMs appear via bulk gap closing and are topologically characterized by a winding number. The RZMs are not associated with any bulk states and possess no winding number, but their emergence is instead tied to exceptional points. Further, we confirm the stability of the dissipation-induced RZMs and MZMs in the presence of random disorder. Our study paves the way for both realizing and stabilizing MZMs in an experimental setup, driven by dissipation.

We propose a novel semi-parametric classifier based on Mahalanobis distances of an observation from the competing classes. Our tool is a generalized additive model with the logistic link function that uses these distances as features to estimate the posterior probabilities of the different classes. While popular parametric classifiers like linear and quadratic discriminant analyses are mainly motivated by the normality of the underlying distributions, the proposed classifier is more flexible and free from such parametric assumptions. Since the densities of elliptic distributions are functions of Mahalanobis distances, this classifier works well when the competing classes are (nearly) elliptic. In such cases, it often outperforms popular nonparametric classifiers, especially when the sample size is small compared to the dimension of the data. To cope with non-elliptic and possibly multimodal distributions, we propose a local version of the Mahalanobis distance. Subsequently, we propose another classifier based on a generalized additive model that uses the local Mahalanobis distances as features. This nonparametric classifier usually performs like the Mahalanobis distance based semiparametric classifier when the underlying distributions are elliptic, but outperforms it for several non-elliptic and multimodal distributions. We also investigate the behaviour of these two classifiers in high dimension, low sample size situations. A thorough numerical study involving several simulated and real datasets demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed classifiers in comparison to many state-of-the-art methods.

Magnetic and topological properties along with quantum correlations in terms of several entanglement measures have been investigated for an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XY model in the presence of transverse magnetic field and XZX$-$YZY type of three-spin interactions. Symmetries of the spin Hamiltonian have been identified. Under the Jordan-Wigner transformation, the spin Hamiltonian converted into spinless superconducting model with nearest neighbor hopping and Cooper pairing terms in addition to next nearest neighbor Cooper pairing potential. Long range antiferromagnetic order has been studied in terms of staggered spin-spin correlation functions, while the topological orders have been characterized by winding numbers. Magnetic and topological phase diagrams have been prepared. Faithful coexistence of magnetic and topological superconducting phases is found in the entire parameter regime. Boundaries of various quantum phases have been marked and positions of bicritical points have been identified.

Topological insulators~(TIs) are a new class of materials that resemble ordinary band insulators in terms of a bulk band gap but exhibit protected metallic states on their boundaries. In this modern direction, higher-order TIs~(HOTIs) are a new class of TIs in dimensions $d>1$. These HOTIs possess $(d - 1)$-dimensional boundaries that, unlike those of conventional TIs, do not conduct via gapless states but are themselves TIs. Precisely, an $n^{\rm th}$ order $d$-dimensional higher-order topological insulator is characterized by the presence of boundary modes that reside on its $d_c=(d-n)$-dimensional boundary. For instance, a three-dimensional second (third) order TI hosts gapless (localized) modes on the hinges (corners), characterized by $d_c = 1 (0)$. Similarly, a second-order TI in two dimensions only has localized corner states ($d_c = 0$). These higher-order phases are protected by various crystalline as well as discrete symmetries. The non-equilibrium tunability of the topological phase has been a major academic challenge where periodic Floquet drive provides us golden opportunity to overcome that barrier. Here, we discuss different periodic driving protocols to generate Floquet higher-order TIs while starting from a non-topological or first-order topological phase. Furthermore, we emphasize that one can generate the dynamical anomalous $π$-modes along with the concomitant $0$-modes. The former can be realized only in a dynamical setup. We exemplify the Floquet higher-order topological modes in two and three dimensions in a systematic way. Especially, in two dimensions, we demonstrate a Floquet second-order TI hosting $0$- and $π$ corner modes. Whereas a three-dimensional Floquet second-order TI and Floquet third-order TI manifest one- and zero-dimensional hinge and corner modes, respectively.

The presence of random disorder in a metallic system accounts for the localization of extended states in general. On the contrary, the presence of disorder can induce topological phases hosting metallic boundary states out of a non-topological system, giving birth to the topological Anderson insulator phase. In this context, we theoretically investigate the generation of an out of equilibrium higher-order topological Anderson phase in the presence of disorder potential in a time-periodic dynamical background. In particular, the time-dependent drive and the disorder potential concomitantly render the generation of Floquet higher-order topological Anderson insulator~(FHOTAI) phase, while the clean, undriven system is topologically trivial. We showcase the generation of FHOTAI hosting both $0$- and $π$-modes. Most importantly, we develop the real space topological invariant -- a winding number based on chiral symmetry to characterize the Floquet $0$ -- and $π$-modes distinctly. This chiral winding number serves the purpose of the indicator for the topological phase transition in the presence of drive as well as disorder and appropriately characterizes the FHOTAI.

In this study, a spin-1/2 extended anisotropic XY chain has been introduced in which both time reversal and SU(2) symmetries are broken but $Z_2$ symmetry is preserved. Magnetic and topological phase diagrams in the parameter space have been drawn in the presence of transverse magnetic field. Entanglement measures like mutual information and quantum discord are also evaluated and it indicates that these transitions are second order in nature. Quantum phase transition is noted at zero magnetic field, as well as magnetic long range order is found to withstand magnetic field of any strength. Exact analytic results for spin-spin correlation functions have been obtained in terms of Jordan Wigner fermionization. Existence of long range magnetic order has been investigated numerically by finding correlation functions as well as the Binder cumulant in the ground state. Dispersion relation, ground state energy, and energy gap are obtained analytically. In order to find the topologically nontrivial phase, sign of Pfaffian invariant and value of winding number have been evaluated. Both magnetic and topological phases are robust against the magnetic field and found to move coercively in the parameter space with the variation of its strength. Long range orders along two orthogonal directions and two different topological phases are found and their one-to-one correspondence has been found. Finally casting the spinless fermions onto Majorana fermions, properties of zero energy edge states are studied. Three different kinds of Majorana pairings are noted. In the trivial phase, next-nearest-neighbor Majorana pairing is found, whereas two different types of nearest-neighbor Majorana pairings are identified in the topological superconducting phase.

Existence of nontrivial topological phases in a tight binding Haldane-like model on the depleted Lieb lattice is reported. This two-band model is formulated by considering the nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and next-next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms along with complex phase which breaks the time reversal symmetry of this semi-metallic system. Topological feature of this model is studied along with the presence of sublattice symmetry breaking staggered onsite energy. Combined effect of these two broken symmetries is found crucial for an additional transition between nontrivial and trivial phases. System exhibits two types of phase transitions, say, between two nontrivial phases and nontrivial to trivial phases. Nonzero Chern numbers, existence of Hall plateau and symmetry protected edge states confirm the presence of the nontrivial phases. This two-band system hosts four different types of phases where two are topological. Additionally topological properties of stacked bilayer of the depleted Lieb lattices is also studied with similar Haldane-like Hamiltonian. This four-band system is found to host Chern insulating phases, with higher values of Chern numbers supported by in-gap edge states.

We put forth a theoretical framework for engineering a two-dimensional (2D) second-order topological superconductor (SOTSC) by utilizing a heterostructure: incorporating noncollinear magnetic textures between an $s$-wave superconductor and a 2D quantum spin Hall insulator. It stabilizes the higher order topological superconducting phase, resulting in Majorana corner modes (MCMs) at four corners of a 2D domain. The calculated non-zero quadrupole moment characterizes the bulk topology. Subsequently, through a unitary transformation, an effective low-energy Hamiltonian reveals the effects of magnetic textures, resulting in an effective in-plane Zeeman field and spin-orbit coupling. This approach provides a qualitative depiction of the topological phase, substantiated by numerical validation within exact real-space model. Analytically calculated effective pairings in the bulk illuminate the microscopic behavior of the SOTSC. The comprehension of MCM emergence is supported by a low-energy edge theory, which is attributed to the interplay between effective pairings of $(p_x + p_y)$-type and $(p_x + i p_y)$-type. Our extensive study paves the way for practically attaining the SOTSC phase by integrating noncollinear magnetic textures.

The construction of the fibration is proved for $k\geq 2$, where the prime $2$, and the primes which occur as torsion in $π_{2n-1}(S^n)$ are inverted. In specific cases, by either assuming $n$ is small, or assuming $k$ is large we can reduce the number of primes that need to be inverted. Integral results are obtained for $n=2$ or $4$, and if $k$ is bigger than the number of cyclic summands in the stable stem $π_{n-1}^s$, we obtain results after inverting $2$. Finally, we prove some applications for fibrations over $N\# M_k$, and for looped configuration spaces.

Simple route of engineering topological phases for any desired value of winding and Chern numbers is found in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by adding a further neighbor hopping term of varying distances. It is known that the standard SSH model yields a single topological phase with winding number, $ν=1$. In this study it is shown that how one can generate topological phases with any values of winding numbers, for examples, $ν=\pm 1,\pm 2,\pm 3,\cdots,$ in the presence of a single further neighbor term which preserves inversion, particle-hole and chiral symmetries. Quench dynamics of the topological and trivial phases are studied in the presence of a specific nonlinear term. Another version of SSH model with additional modulating nearest neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameters was introduced before which exhibit a single topological phase characterized by Chern number, $\mathcal C=\pm 1$. Standard form of inversion, particle-hole and chiral symmetries are broken in this model. Here this model has been studied in the presence of several types of parametrization among which, for a special case the system is found to yield a series of phases with Chern numbers, $\mathcal C=\pm 1,\pm 2,\pm 3,\cdots.$ In another parametrization, multiple crossings within the edge states energy lines are found in both trivial and topological phases. Topological phase diagrams are drawn for every case. Emergence of spurious topological phases is also reported.

We report on a realistic and rather general scheme where noncollinear magnetic textures proximitized with the most common $s$-wave superconductor can appear as the alternative to $p$-wave superconductor{--}the prime proposal to realize two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev model for topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana flat edge mode (MFEM). A general minimal Hamiltonian suitable for magnet/superconductor heterostructures reveals robust MFEM within the gap of Shiba bands due to the emergence of an effective ``$p_x+p_y$"-type $p$-wave pairing, spatially localized at the edges of a 2D magnetic domain of spin-spiral. We finally verify this concept by considering Mn (Cr) monolayer grown on a $s$-wave superconducting substrate, Nb(110) under strain (Nb(001)). In both 2D cases, the antiferromagnetic spin-spiral solutions exhibit robust MFEM at certain domain edges that is beyond the scope of the trivial extension of 1D spin-chain model in 2D. This approach, particularly when the MFEM appears in the TSC phase for such heterostructure materials, offers a perspective to extend the realm of the TSC in 2D.

In this article, we propose some two-sample tests based on ball divergence and investigate their high dimensional behavior. First, we study their behavior for High Dimension, Low Sample Size (HDLSS) data, and under appropriate regularity conditions, we establish their consistency in the HDLSS regime, where the dimension of the data grows to infinity while the sample sizes from the two distributions remain fixed. Further, we show that these conditions can be relaxed when the sample sizes also increase with the dimension, and in such cases, consistency can be proved even for shrinking alternatives. We use a simple example involving two normal distributions to prove that even when there are no consistent tests in the HDLSS regime, the powers of the proposed tests can converge to unity if the sample sizes increase with the dimension at an appropriate rate. This rate is obtained by establishing the minimax rate optimality of our tests over a certain class of alternatives. Several simulated and benchmark data sets are analyzed to compare the performance of these proposed tests with the state-of-the-art methods that can be used for testing the equality of two high-dimensional probability distributions.

We theoretically investigate a practically realizable Floquet topological superconductor model, based on a one-dimensional Rashba nanowire and proximity induced $s$-wave superconductivity in the presence of a Zeeman field. The driven system hosts regular $0$- and anomalous $π$-Majorana end modes~(MEMs). By tuning the chemical potential and the frequency of the drive, we illustrate the generation of multiple MEMs in our theoretical set up. We utilize the chiral symmetry operator to topologically characterize these MEMs via a dynamical winding number constructed out of the periodized evolution operator. Interestingly, the robustness of the $0$- and $π$-MEMs is established in the presence of on-site time-independent random disorder potential. We employ the twisted boundary condition to define the dynamical topological invariant for this translational-symmetry broken system. The interplay between the Floquet driving and the weak disorder can stabilize the MEMs giving rise to a quantized value of the dynamical winding number for a finite range of drive parameters. This observation might be experimentally helpful in scrutinizing the topological nature of the Floquet MEMs. We showcase another driving protocol namely, a periodic kick in the chemical potential to study the generation of Floquet MEMs in our setup. Our work paves a realistic way to engineer multiple MEMs in a driven system.

When the competing classes in a classification problem are not of comparable size, many popular classifiers exhibit a bias towards larger classes, and the nearest neighbor classifier is no exception. To take care of this problem, we develop a statistical method for nearest neighbor classification based on such imbalanced data sets. First, we construct a classifier for the binary classification problem and then extend it for classification problems involving more than two classes. Unlike the existing oversampling or undersampling methods, our proposed classifiers do not need to generate any pseudo observations or remove any existing observations, hence the results are exactly reproducible. We establish the Bayes risk consistency of these classifiers under appropriate regularity conditions. Their superior performance over the existing methods is amply demonstrated by analyzing several benchmark data sets.

Being motivated by intriguing phenomena such as the breakdown of conventional bulk boundary correspondence and emergence of skin modes in the context of non-Hermitian (NH) topological insulators, we here propose a NH second-order topological superconductor (SOTSC) model that hosts Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Employing the non-Bloch form of NH Hamiltonian, we topologically characterize the above modes by biorthogonal nested polarization and resolve the apparent breakdown of the bulk boundary correspondence. Unlike the Hermitian SOTSC, we notice that the MZMs inhabit only one corner out of four in the two-dimensional NH SOTSC. We extend the static MZMs into the realm of Floquet drive. We find anomalous $π$-mode following low-frequency mass-kick in addition to the regular $0$-mode that is usually engineered in a high-frequency regime. We further characterize the regular $0$-mode with biorthogonal Floquet nested polarization. Our proposal is not limited to the $d$-wave superconductivity only and can be realized in the experiment with strongly correlated optical lattice platforms.

The global pandemic due to the outbreak of COVID-19 ravages the whole world for more than two years in which all the countries are suffering a lot since December 2019. In order to control this ongoing waves of epidemiological infections, attempts have been made to understand the dynamics of this pandemic in deterministic approach with the help of several mathematical models. In this article characteristics of a multi-wave SIR model have been studied which successfully explains the features of this pandemic waves in India. Stability of this model has been studied by identifying the equilibrium points as well as by finding the eigen values of the corresponding Jacobian matrices. Complex eigen values are found which ultimately give rise to the oscillatory solutions for the three categories of populations, say, susceptible, infected and removed. In this model, a finite probability of the recovered people for becoming susceptible again is introduced which eventually lead to the oscillatory solution in other words. The set of differential equations has been solved numerically in order to obtain the variation for numbers of susceptible, infected and removed people with time. In this phenomenological study, finally an additional modification is made in order to explain the aperiodic oscillation which is found necessary to capture the feature of epidemiological waves particularly in India.

In this article, we propose some change-point detection methods based on clustering, which can be conveniently used in such high dimension, low sample size situations. First, we consider the single change-point problem. Using k-means clustering based on some suitable dissimilarity measures, we propose some methods for testing the existence of a change-point and estimating its location. High-dimensional behavior of these proposed methods are investigated under appropriate regularity conditions. Next, we extend our methods for detection of multiple change-points. We carry out extensive numerical studies to compare the performance of our proposed methods with some state-of-the-art methods.

After extensive investigation on the Floquet second-order topological insulator (FSOTI) in two dimension (2D), here we propose two driving schemes to systematically engineer the hierarchy of Floquet first-order topological insulator, FSOTI, and Floquet third-order topological insulator in three dimension (3D). Our driving protocols allow these Floquet phases to showcase regular $0$, anomalous $π$, and hybrid $0$-$π$-modes in a unified phase diagram, obtained for both 2D and 3D systems, while staring from the lower order topological or non-topological phases. Both the step drive and the mass kick protocols exhibit the analogous structure of the evolution operator around the high symmetry points. These eventually enable us to understand the Floquet phase diagrams analytically and the Floquet higher order modes numerically based on finite size systems. The number of $0$ and $π$-modes can be tuned irrespective of the frequency in the step drive scheme while we observe frequency driven topological phase transitions for the mass kick protocol. We topologically characterize some of these higher order Floquet phases (harboring either $0$ or anomalous $π$ mode) by suitable topological invariant in 2D and 3D cases.

After exploring much on two-dimensional higher-order topological superconductors (HOTSCs) hosting Majorana corner modes (MCMs) only, we propose a simple fermionic model based on a three-dimensional topological insulator proximized with $s$-wave superconductor to realize Majorana hinge modes (MHMs) followed by MCMs under the application of appropriate Wilson-Dirac perturbations. We interestingly find that the second-order topological superconductor, hosting MHMs, appears above a threshold value of the first type perturbation while the third-order topological superconducting phase, supporting MCMs, immediately arises incorporating infinitesimal perturbation of the second kind. Thus, a hierarchy of HOTSC phases can be realized in a single three-dimensional model. Additionally, the application of bulk magnetic field is found to be instrumental in manipulating the number of MHMs, leaving the number for MCMs unaltered. We analytically understand these above-mentioned numerical findings by resorting to the low energy model. We further characterize these topological phases with a distinct structure of the Wannier spectra. From the practical point of view, we manifest quantized transport signatures of these higher-order modes. Finally, we construct Floquet engineering to generate the hierarchy of HOTSC phases by kicking the same perturbations as considered in their static counterpart.

We theoretically investigate the Floquet generation of second-order topological superconducting (SOTSC) phase in the high-temperature platform both in two-dimension (2D) and three-dimension (3D). Starting from a $d$-wave superconducting pairing gap, we periodically kick the mass term to engineer the dynamical SOTSC phase within a specific range of the strength of the drive. Under such dynamical breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS), we show the emergence of the \textit{weak} SOTSC phase, harboring eight corner modes \ie two zero-energy Majorana per corner, with vanishing Floquet quadrupole moment. On the other hand, our study interestingly indicates that upon the introduction of an explicit TRS breaking Zeeman field, the \textit{weak} SOTSC phase can be transformed into \textit{strong} SOTSC phase, hosting one zero-energy Majorana mode per corner, with quantized quadrupole moment. We also compute the Floquet Wannier spectra that further establishes the \textit{weak} and \textit{strong} nature of these phases. We numerically verify our protocol computing the exact Floquet operator in open boundary condition and then analytically validate our findings with the low energy effective theory (in the high-frequency limit). The above protocol is applicable for 3D as well where we find one dimensional (1D) hinge mode in the SOTSC phase. We then show that these corner modes are robust against moderate disorder and the topological invariants continue to exhibit quantized nature until disorder becomes substantially strong. The existence of zero-energy Majorana modes in these higher-order phases is guaranteed by the anti-unitary spectral symmetry.

We theoretically investigate the Floquet generation of second-order topological superconducting (SOTSC) phase, hosting Majorana corner modes (MCMs), considering a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) with proximity induced superconducting $s$-wave pairing in it. Our dynamical prescription consists of the periodic kick in time-reversal symmetry breaking in-plane magnetic field and four-fold rotational symmetry breaking mass term while these Floquet MCMs are preserved by anti-unitary particle-hole symmetry. The first driving protocol always leads to four zero energy MCMs (i.e. one Majorana per corner) as a sign of a {\it{strong}} SOTSC phase. Interestingly, the second protocol can result in a {\it{weak}} SOTSC phase, harbouring eight zero energy MCMs (two Majorana states per corner), in addition to the {\it{strong}} SOTSC phase. We characterize the topological nature of these phases by Floquet quadrupolar moment and Floquet Wannier spectrum. We believe that relying on the recent experimental advancement in the driven systems and proximity induced superconductivity, our schemes may be possible to test in the future.

Plaquette and bond operator formalisms have been employed to obtain the triplet plaquette and bond excitations for two different parameter regimes in the presence of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions based on the plaquette-resonating-valence-bond and dimerized ground states, respectively. In the absence of magnetic field a pair of six-fold degenerate nodal-loops with distinct topological feature is noted in the plaquette excitations. They are found to split into three pairs of two-fold degenerate nodal-loops in the presence of magnetic field. In the other parameter regime, system hosts two-fold degenerate multiple nodal-lines with a variety of shapes in the triplon dispersion bands in the presence of magnetic field. Ground state energy and spin gap have been determined additionally for the two regimes. Those nodal-lines are expected to be detectable in neutron scattering experiment on the frustrated antiferromagnet, CaV$_4$O$_9$.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. While the kagome ferromagnet hosts only a single first order topological phase, the breathing kagome system exhibits multiple first and second order topological phases along with their coexistence. Magnon dispersion relation is obtained by using linear spin wave theory. Flat band and Dirac cones are obtained in the absence of
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. A topological phase diagram is presented where several first and second order phases as well as their overlap are identified. Values of thermal Hall conductivity for all the first order phases are obtained. Distinct first order phases are characterized by different sets of Chern numbers in association with the necessary chiral edge states in accordance to the first order bulk-boundary-correspondence rule. Second order phase is characterized by polarization along with the emergence of corner states. Violation of the second order bulk-corner-correspondence rule has been noted in some regions.

We theoretically investigate a periodically driven semimetal based on a square lattice. The possibility of engineering both Floquet Topological Insulator featuring Floquet edge states and Floquet higher order topological insulating phase, accommodating topological corner modes has been demonstrated starting from the semimetal phase, based on Floquet Hamiltonian picture. Topological phase transition takes place in the bulk quasi-energy spectrum with the variation of the drive amplitude where Chern number changes sign from $+1$ to $-1$. This can be attributed to broken time-reversal invariance ($\mathcal{T}$) due to circularly polarized light. When the discrete four-fold rotational symmetry ($\mathcal{C}_4$) is also broken by adding a Wilson mass term along with broken $\mathcal{T}$, higher order topological insulator (HOTI), hosting in-gap modes at all the corners, can be realized. The Floquet quadrupolar moment, calculated with the Floquet states, exhibits a quantized value of $ 0.5$ (modulo 1) identifying the HOTI phase. We also show the emergence of the {\it{dressed corner modes}} at quasi-energy $ω/2$ (remnants of zero modes in the quasi-static high frequency limit), where $ω$ is the driving frequency, in the intermediate frequency regime.

We study the transport properties of Dirac electrons across a two-dimensional normal metal-barrier-normal metal (NBN) interfaces in monolayer borophane. We analyse the transmission probability with variation of the width of the barrier region, the incidence energy and transverse momentum. We demonstrate that a gap exists in the transmission probability spectrum and the position, width of transmission gap can be tuned by the barrier strength and transverse momentum respectively. We point out the variation of the ballistic tunneling conductance as a function of the width of the barrier region and incident energy. We find that the oscillatory or decaying nature of the conductance with variation in barrier width depends upon the number of propagating and evanescent modes which are controlled by the incident energy and barrier strength. We show that the conductance as a function of incident energy drops to a minimum value when the incident energy becomes identical to the barrier height and identify that this effect is caused by the presence of evanescent modes inside the barrier. Based on these findings we propose a perfectly tunable wavevector filter for Borophane. We expect our findings posses useful applications in borophane based nano-electronic devices.

Magnetoelectric multiferroic composite of two types of multiferroic (Type I and II) consisting BiFeO3 and TbMnO3 is studied for enhanced magnetic and transport properties. A narrower band gap is estimated from the UV-visible absorption spectrum from that of BiFeO3 and TbMnO3. With known value of band gap, the band structure was estimated from the valence band x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) and ultra violet photoemission spectra (UPS). The valence and conduction band was found at 1.0 eV and 0.45 eV above and below the Fermi level respectively. Thus the insulating behavior of the system is understood from the reconstruction of the energy bands at the interface which happens due to lattice mismatch of the two materials. The large coercivity and the increase on the magnetization value are understood to be due to superexchange interaction between different Mn ions (Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+). From the composition study of EDXA and core level x-ray photoemission spectra oxygen vacancy was found which in turn creates the mixed valence state of Mn to maintain the charge neutrality.

The non-stoichiometric Sn related defects and the O related stoichiometric Frenkel defects arising in the nanocrystals because of co-doping have been identified and their effect on the structural and optical properties of the nanocrystals have been extensively studied. It has been observed, using XPS that on increasing the Ni co-doping concentration ($y$), the non-stoichiometric Sn defect Sn$_{\text{Sn}}^{"}$ increases in compensation of existing defect Sn$_{i}^{....}$ for $y$ = 0.00 nanocrystals. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) also confirms the existence of Sn$_{\text{Sn}}^{"}$. Regarding the Frenkel defect, XPS results indicate that the concentration of $V_{\text{O}}$ and O$_{i}$, manifested in the form of dangling bond related surface defect states, increases with increase in $y$. Temperature dependent magnetisation measurement of the nanocrystals confirm the charge state of $V_{\text{O}}$. The point defects have been found to affect the structural properties in a way that distortion in octahedral geometry of complete Sn-O octahderon effectively reduces whereas distortion in the trigonal planar coordination geometry of O increases. The investigation of Urbach edge indicates an enhancement in the disorder in the nanocrystals on co-doping. The optical band gap of the nanocrystals has been found to be red shifted upto $y$=0.02 and then a gradual blue shift has been observed. A direct effect of the O related defect has been observed on the blue luminescence of the nanocrystals such that the spectral contribution of blue luminescence in the total emission intensity increases by 72% for $y$=0.04 as compared to $y$=0.00.

Electronic structure, electrical transport, dc and ac magnetization properties of the hole substituted (Sr2+) partially B-site disordered double perovskite Pr2-xSrxCoMnO6 system have been investigated. Electronic structure was probed by employing X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The study suggested the presence of mixed valence states of the B-site ions (Co2+/Co3+ and Mn3+/Mn4+) with significant enhancement of the average oxidation states due to hole doping. The mere absence of electronic states near the Fermi level in the valence band (VB) spectra for both of the pure (x=0.0) and Sr doped (x=0.5) systems indicated the insulating nature of the samples. Sr substitution is observed to increase the spectral weight near the Fermi level suggesting for an enhanced conductivity of the hole doped system. The temperature variation of electrical resistivity measurements revealed the insulating nature for both the systems, thus supporting the VB spectra results. The dc magnetization data divulged a Griffiths like phase above the long range ordering temperature. A typical re-entrant spin glass like phase driven by the inherent anti-site disorder (ASD) has been maidenly recognized by ac susceptibility study for both the pure and doped systems. Most interestingly, the emergence of a new cluster glass like phase (immediately below the magnetic ordering temperature and above the spin-glass transition temperature) solely driven by the Sr substitution has been unravelled by ac magnetization dynamics study. The isothermal magnetization measurements further probed the exhibition of the giant exchange bias effect emanated from the existence of multiple magnetic phases.

Emergence of multiple topological phases with a series of Chern numbers, $\pm 1$, $\mp 1$, $\pm 2$, $\mp 2$, $\pm 3$ and $\mp 4$, are observed in a ferromagnetic Kitaev-Heisenberg-spin-anisotropic model on honeycomb lattice with further neighbor interactions in the presence of an external magnetic field. Magnon Chern insulating dispersions of this two-band model are studied by using linear spin-wave theory formulated on the exact ferromagnetic ground state. Magnon edge states are obtained for the respective topological phases along with density of states. A topological phase diagram of this model is presented. Behavior of thermal Hall conductivity for those phases is studied. Sharp jumps of thermal hall conductivity is noted near the vicinity of phase transition points. Topological phases of the Kitaev spin-liquid compounds, $α$-RuCl$_3$, X$_2$IrO$_3$, X = (Na, Li) and CrY$_3$, Y = (Cl, Br, I) are characterized based on this theoretical findings.

Antikink dispersion of the asymmetric $J_1$-$J_2$ sawtooth spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain has been derived. Value of spin-gap is obtained by estimating the minimum of dispersion relation variationally. The exact doubly-degenerate ground state energy has been derived at the symmetric point, $J_1=J_2$, for the whole anisotropic regime. Analytic form of dispersion relations of three different antikink states is obtained and their validity in the parameter space is discussed. The value of spin-gap, specific heat and susceptibility are estimated numerically by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian for chains of finite length. The inherent frustration of this antiferromagnetic model leads to the appearance of additional peak at low-temperatures in the specific heat.

In high dimension, low sample size (HDLSS) settings, classifiers based on Euclidean distances like the nearest neighbor classifier and the average distance classifier perform quite poorly if differences between locations of the underlying populations get masked by scale differences. To rectify this problem, several modifications of these classifiers have been proposed in the literature. However, existing methods are confined to location and scale differences only, and often fail to discriminate among populations differing outside of the first two moments. In this article, we propose some simple transformations of these classifiers resulting into improved performance even when the underlying populations have the same location and scale. We further propose a generalization of these classifiers based on the idea of grouping of variables. The high-dimensional behavior of the proposed classifiers is studied theoretically. Numerical experiments with a variety of simulated examples as well as an extensive analysis of real data sets exhibit advantages of the proposed methods.

Raman effect study indicates the existence of hardening due to phonon-phonon anharmonic interaction. From dc-magnetic measurement it is observed that in Eu rich samples contribution of dipolar interaction is significant. From ac magnetic measurement of (Tb1-xEux)2Ti2O7 a new single ion weak spin freezing ~ 33K at zero magnetic field is observed. On applying a field of 1T, all the compounds show a field induced transition (T*) which shifts towards higher temperature with increase of Eu content. This field induced transition corresponds to single moment saturation.

The magnetic, magneto-transport and ARPES studies of Fe and S co-doped Bi2Se3 were investigated. With doping concentration magneto-resistance (MR) gradually decreases and for a certain doping concentration giant negative MR is observed which persists up to room temperature. Magnetic measurement indicates that the negative MR is observed when ferromagnetic ordering is induced with Fe doping. The magnetic ordering can be attributed with the RKKY interaction. Positive MR reappears with larger doping concentration which may be attributed to the decrease of FM ordering due to the turning off of the spin-orbit coupling leading to the destruction of non-trivial bulk state. This in-effect de-hybridizes the conduction band with the Fe spin. The ARPES data also indicates that above a critical doping concentration (x>0.09) the non-trivial bulk state is completely destroyed.

We report the presence of giant spontaneous exchange bias (HSEB) in a hard and soft antiferromagnetic composite of BiFeO3-TbMnO3 (BFO-TMO in 7:3 and 8:2 ratio). The HSEB varies between 5-778Oe, but persists up to room temperature with a maximum near a spin reorientation transition temperature observed from magnetization vs. temperature measurement in Zero-field cooled (ZFC) and Field cooled (FC) modes. Isothermal remnant magnetization measurements at room temperature indicate the presence of an interfacial layer of a 2 dimensional dilute antiferromagnet in a field (2D DAFF). A stable value of the exchange bias has been observed via training effect measurements which signify the role of interfacial exchange coupling in the system. Based on the experimental results we explain the presence of the giant spontaneous exchange bias on the basis of a strong strain-mediated magnetoelectriccoupling induced exchange interaction and the creation of 2D DAFF layer at the interface. Theproperties of this layer are defined by canting and pinning of BFO spins at the interface with TMO due to Fe and Mn interaction. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) confirms the presence of canted antiferromagnetic ordering of BiFeO3, charge transfer between Mn ions and different magnetically coupled layers which play vital role in getting the exchange bias.

In this study, a tight-binding model on square octagon lattice with nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour hoppings is considered. The system is topologically trivial although it exhibits quadratic band-touching points in its band-structure. It is shown that the system drives towards topologically non-trivial phases as soon as it is exposed to monochromatic circularly polarized light. Multiple topological phases are found to emerge with the variation of amplitude of light. An effective time-independent Hamiltonian of the system is obtained following the Floquet-Bloch formulation. Quasi-energy band-structures along with definite values of Chern numbers for respective bands are obtained. Characterization of topological phases are made in terms of band structure and Chern numbers. In addition, Hall conductance and topologically protected chiral edge states are obtained to explain the topological properties. Density of states is obtained in every case. The system undergoes a series of topological phase transitions among various topological phases upon variations of both amplitude of light and hopping strengths. It exhibits Chern insulating and Chern semimetallic phases depending on the values of lattice filling.

Electronic structure near Fermi level of Pr2CoFeO6 (at 300 K) was investigated by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) technique. All three cations, i.e., Pr, Co and Fe were found to be trivalent in nature. XPS analysis also suggested the system to be insulating in nature. Moreover, Raman spectroscopy study indicated the random distribution of the B-site ions (Co/Fe) triggered by same charge states. In temperature-dependent Raman study, the relative heights of the two observed phonon modes exhibited anomalous behaviour near magnetic transition temperature TN~270 K, thus indicating towards interplay between spin and phonon in the system. Furthermore, clear anomalous softening was observed below TN which confirmed the existence of strong spin-phonon coupling occurring for at least two phonon modes of the system. The line width analysis of the phonon modes essentially ruled out the role of magnetostriction effect in the observed phonon anomaly. The investigation of the lattice parameter variation across TN (obtained from the temperature-dependent neutron diffraction measurements) further confirmed the existence of the spin-phonon coupling.

We report the appearance of nontrivial topological phases in a tight-binding model on the stuffed honeycomb lattice. The model contains nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor hopping terms coupled with an additional phase depending on the direction of hopping. Chern insulating and semi-metallic phases emerge with the change of hopping parameters. Nonzero Chern numbers characterizing the bands and the existence of topologically protected edge states in the gap between the relevant bands confirm the presence of those phases. We show that adding an extra basis to Haldane's honeycomb model can lead to an additional topological phase characterized by Chern number $\pm2$. Transition between different topological phases driven by the hopping parameters has been illustrated in the topological phase diagram of the system. Zero temperature Hall conductivity along with density of states is evaluated. Topological properties of another tight-binding model on the stuffed square lattice are also reported in this article.

We report the comprehensive experimental results identifying the magnetic spin ordering and the magnetization dynamics of a double perovskite Pr2CoFeO6 by employing the (dc and ac) magnetization, powder neutron diffraction (NPD) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction studies revealed that Pr2CoFeO6 adopts a B-site disordered orthorhombic structure with space group Pnma. Additionally, ab initio band structure calculations performed on this system suggested an insulating anti-ferromagnetic (Fe-Fe) ground state. Magnetometry study showed the system to possess a spectrum of interesting magnetic phases including long range antiferromagnetic (canted) spin ordering (TN ~269 K), Griffiths phase, re-entrant cluster glass (RCG) (TG~ 34 K) and exchange bias. However, the NPD study divulged the exhibition of a long range G-type (below TN ~269 K) of spin ordering by Fe spins. Spin dynamics study by ac susceptibility technique confirmed the system possessing long range ordering at higher temperatureundergoes a RCG transition at ~34 K. Existence of Griffiths phase was confirmed by non-analytic field variation of magnetization and Heisenberg type temporal spin relaxation above long range ordering temperature TN ~269 K. The anti-site disorder related to the B-sites (Co/Fe) is found to be the main driving force forthe observed multiple magnetic phases. Furthermore, the electronic structure probed by the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study suggested a nominal valance state of +3 for both of the B-site ions (Co/Fe) which in turn triggered the anti-site disorder in the system. Magnetic, XRD, NPD and XAS analysis yielded a low spin state (LS) for the Co3+ ions. The random non-magnetic dilution of magnetic Fe3+ (HS) ions by Co3+ (LS) ions essentially played a crucial role in manifesting the magnetic properties of the system.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and magnetization of hybrid pyrochlore Eu2-xFexTi2O7 were investigated, where the rare earth Eu (4f) was replaced with transition metal Fe (3d) to introduce competing 4f-3d interactions. It is confirmed that the valence states of Eu and Fe ions are formally trivalent while that of Ti ions are tetravalent (3d0). The analysis yielded that the tetravalent Ti ions occupy octahedral sites with distorted Oh symmetry which is triggered by the presence of vacant 8a anionic site adjacent to TiO6 octahedra. Further study with Fe doping revealed that it essentially reduces the octahedral distortion by introducing anionic disorder (migration of 48f oxygen ions to 8a site). Analysis of O K edge XAS spectra further confirmed the Fe substitution causing the systematic change in the ligand (O2-) coordination of the Ti4+ cations. On the other hand, a new field induced transition (with Fe doping) at low temperature T* (4 K<T*< 8 K) in ac susceptibility with unusually slow spin relaxation was observed. The transition shifted towards higher temperatures both with increasing applied field and Fe concentration. However, the single ion spin freezing (Tf ~35 K) appears to be suppressed with Fe substitution. Interestingly, small amount of Fe3+ ion substitution showed significant enhancement in the dc magnetization at lower temperatures (<100 K). Analysis further indicated rise of dipolar FM exchange interaction with Fe doping.
