We consider anyonic quasiparticles with charge e/2 described by the ν = 1/2 chiral Luttinger liquid, which collide in a Hong-Ou-Mandel-like interferometer. These colliding anyonic channels can be formally viewed as hosting Laughlin-like fractional ν = 1/2 quasiparticles. More specifically, two possible geometries are considered: (i) a two-edge-channel setup where anyons originate from equilibrium reservoirs; (ii) a four-edge-channel setup where nonequilibrium anyons arrive at the collider in the form of diluted beams. For both setups, we calculate the tunneling current and the current correlations. For setup (i), our results provide analytically exact expressions for the tunneling current, tunneling-current noise, and cross-correlation noise, The exact relation between conductance and noise is demonstrated. For setup (ii), we show that the tunneling current and the generalized Fano factor [defined in B. Rosenow et al. (2016)] are finite for diluted streams of ν = 1/2 anyons. This is due to the processes where nonequilibrium anyons, supplied via either source edge, directly tunnel at the central QPC. Thus, to obtain meaningful results in this case, one should go beyond the so-called time-domain braiding processes, where nonequilibrium anyons do not tunnel at the collider, but rather indirectly influence the tunneling by braiding with the quasiparticle-quasihole pairs created at the collider. This suggests that the effect of direct tunneling and collisions of diluted anyons in the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer can be important for various observables in physical quantum-Hall edges at Laughlin filling fractions.

We investigate the dependence of the spectra on the boundary conditions, showing how they affect the surface states and the band dispersion. We find a set of drum states, arising from the hybridization of the drumhead states on opposite surfaces at finite slab width, and describe their signatures in the transport properties of a clean sample. Finally, we compute the electronic trajectories in the ballistic regime and show that there is a series of resonant angles that ensure perfect transmission. We also show how the current density profile acquires an inhomogeneous distribution in the radial direction.

We employ the Lindblad master equation method to study the nonequilibrium dynamics following a parametric quench in the Hamiltonian of an open, two-dimensional superconducting system coupled to an external bath. Within our approach we show how, in the open system, the dissipation works as an effective stabilization mechanism in the time evolution of the system after the quench. Eventually, we evidence how the mismatch between the phases corresponding to the initial and to the final state of the system determines a dynamical phase transition between the two distinct phases. Our method allows for fully characterizing the dynamical phase transition in an open system in several cases of physical relevance, by means of a combined study of the time-dependent superconducting gap and of the fidelity between density matrices.

We compute the spin-Hall conductance in a multiband model describing the two-dimensional electron gas formed at a LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface in the presence of a finite concentration of impurities. Combining linear response theory with a systematic calculation of the impurity contributions to the self-energy, as well as to the vertex corrections of the relevant diagrams, we recover the full spin-Hall vs. sheet conductance dependence of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 as reported in Trier et al. [Nano Lett. 20, 395 (2020)], finding a very good agreement with the experimental data below and above the Lifshitz transition. In particular, we demonstrate that the multiband electronic structure leads to only a partial, instead of a complete, screening of the spin-Hall conductance, which decreases with increasing the carrier density. Our method can be generalized to other two-dimensional systems characterized by a broken inversion symmetry and multiband physics.

Low temperature structural and superfluid properties of $^4$He confined in cylindrical nanopores are theoretically investigated by means of first principle Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. We vary the density of $^4$He inside the pore, as well as the pore diameter and the potential describing the interaction of each $^4$He atom with the pore surface. Accordingly, the $^4$He fluid inside the pore forms either a single channel along the axis, or a series of concentric cylindrical shells, with varying degrees of shell overlap. In the limit of pore length greatly exceeding its radius, the $^4$He fluid always displays markedly one-dimensional behavior, with no "dimensional crossover" above some specific pore radius and/or as multiple concentric shells form, in contrast to what recently claimed by other authors [Phys. Rev. B 101, 104505 (2020)]. Indeed, the predicted robustness of one-dimensional physics suggests that this system may offer a broadly viable pathway to the experimental observation of exotic behavior of, e.g., junctions of interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, in an appropriately designed network of nanopores.

Within the framework of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, we compute the thermal conductance for a wide class of boundary conditions and detail the physical processes leading to the breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law at the junction. We show how connecting external reservoirs to the quantum wires affects the conductance tensors close to the various fixed points of the phase diagram of the junction. We therefore distinguish two types of violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law: a "trivial" one, independent of the junction dynamics and arising from the breakdown of the Fermi-liquid picture in the wire, and a junction-related counterpart, arising from multi-particle scattering processes at the junction.

In turn, the latter correlations are defined via a suitable combination of (disconnected) one- and two-point correlation functions. In contrast to the case of pure states, conditions to be satisfied turn out to be rather severe. However, we were able to identify some interesting cases, as when the point-independence is valid of the one-point correlations in each possible decomposition of the density matrix, or when the operators that enter in the correlations are (semi-)positive/negative defined.

We theoretically study the superconducting properties of multi-band two-dimensional transition metal oxide superconductors by analyzing not only the role played by conventional singlet pairings, but also by the triplet order parameters, favored by the spin-orbit couplings present in these ma- terials. In particular, we focus on the two-dimensional electron gas at the (001) interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 band insulators where the low electron densities and the sizeable spin-orbit couplings affect the superconducting features. Our theoretical study is based on an extended su- perconducting mean-field analysis of the typical multi-band tight-binding Hamiltonian, as well as on a parallel analysis of the effective electronic bands in the low-momentum limit, including static on-site and inter-site intra-band attractive potentials under applied magnetic fields. The presence of triplet pairings is able to strongly reduce the singlet order parameters which, as a result, are no longer a monotonic function of the charge density. The interplay between the singlet and the triplet pairings affects the dispersion of quasi-particle excitations in the Brillouin zone and also induces anisotropy in the superconducting behavior under the action of an in-plane and of an out- of-plane magnetic fields. Finally, non-trivial topological superconducting states become stable as a function of the charge density, as well as of the magnitude and of the orientation of the magnetic field. In addition to the chiral, time-reversal breaking, topological superconducting phase, favored by the linear Rashba couplings and by the on-site attractive potentials in the presence of an out- of-plane magnetic field, we find that a time-reversal invariant topological helical superconducting phase is promoted by not-linear spin-orbit couplings and by the inter-site attractive interactions in the absence of magnetic field.

In the specific case of the one-dimensional spinless fermionic Hubbard chain, we prove that an optimal working point emerges in the dependence of the stationary current on the coupling between the chain and the reservoirs, both in the interacting and in the noninteracting case. We derive the topological Kondo Hamiltonian describing a Y junction of three
XX-spin chains connected to outer quantum Ising chains with different tilting angles for the Ising axis. We show that the tilting angles in the spin models play the role of the phases of the superconducting order parameters at the interfaces between bulk superconductors and one-dimensional conducting normal electronic wires. As a result, different tilting angles induce nonzero equilibrium spin (super)currents through the junction.
Employing the renormalization group approach to the topological Kondo model, we derive the scaling formulas for the equilibrium spin currents. We argue that, by monitoring the crossover in the currents induced by the Kondo effect, it is possible to estimate the Kondo screening length. In particular, we prove how it is possible to tune the Kondo length by acting on the applied phases only; this enables us to map out the scaling properties by just tuning the tilting angles and the Kondo length accordingly.

We demonstrate the equivalence between two distinct Luttinger liquid impurity problems. The first concerns a one-dimensional topological superconductor coupled at one end to the ends of two single channel Luttinger liquids. The second concerns a point contact in the quantum spin Hall effect, where four helical Luttinger liquids meet at a point. Both problems have been studied previously and exhibit several stable phases depending on the Luttinger parameter K, that can be characterized in terms of simple conformally invariant boundary conditions describing perfect normal (or Andreev) transmission or reflection. In addition, both problems exhibit critical points that are described by "intermediate" fixed points similar to those found in earlier studies of an impurity in a Luttinger liquid with spin. Though these two models have different symmetries and numbers of modes, we show they are equivalent and are related by a duality transformation, and we show that the non-trivial intermediate critical points are the same. In the non-interacting limit, K=1, the duality involves two distinct free fermion representations that are related by a non-local transformation that derives from the triality of SO(8). Using the explicit translation between the two theories, we translate results from one problem to the other and vice versa. This allows us to make new predictions about the topological superconductor-Luttinger liquid junction, including predictions about the global behavior of the critical conductance G*(K), as well predictions for the critical exponents and universal crossover scaling functions. In this paper we introduce both models from scratch, using a common notation that facilitates their comparison, and we discuss in detail the dualities that relate them, along with their free fermion limits. We close with a discussion of open problems and future directions.

We propose that a pertinently engineered double superconducting island connected to two spinless one-dimensional conducting leads can work as a tunable (iso)spin Kondo and charge Kondo system, with the lead index regarded as an effective isospin degree of freedom. We evidence how, by tuning a single gate voltage applied to the island, it is possible to make the system switch from the (iso)spin Kondo to the charge-Kondo phase, passing across an intermediate phase, in which the Kondo impurity is effectively irrelevant for the low-temperature behavior of the system.
Eventually, we evidence how to probe the various phases by measuring the ac conductance tensor of our system, by emphasizing the features that should allow to identify the onset of the so far quite elusive "charge-2" charge-Kondo effect.

Graphene grown epitaxially on SiC, close to the charge neutrality point (CNP), in an orthogonal magnetic field shows an ambipolar behavior of the transverse resistance accompanied by a puzzling longitudinal magnetoresistance. When injecting a transverse current at one end of the Hall bar, a sizeable non local transverse magnetoresistance is measured at low temperature. While Zeeman spin effect seems not to be able to justify these phenomena, some dissipation involving edge states at the boundaries could explain the order of magnitude of the non local transverse magnetoresistance, but not the asymmetry when the orientation of the orthogonal magnetic field is reversed. As a possible contribution to the explanation of the measured non local magnetoresistance which is odd in the magnetic field, we derive a hydrodynamic approach to transport in this system, which involves particle and hole Dirac carriers, in the form of charge and energy currents. We find that thermal diffusion can take place on a large distance scale, thanks to long recombination times, provided a non insulating bulk of the Hall bar is assumed, as recent models seem to suggest in order to explain the appearance of the longitudinal resistance. In presence of the local source, some leakage of carriers from the edges generates an imbalance of carriers of opposite sign, which are separated in space by the magnetic field and diffuse along the Hall bar generating a non local transverse voltage.

We discuss how to extend the impurity entropy to systems with boundary interactions depending on zero-mode real fermion operators (Majorana modes as well as Klein factors). As specific applications of our method, we consider a junction between N interacting quantum wires and a topological superconductor, as well as a Y-junction of three spinless interacting quantum wires. In addition we find a remarkable correspondence between the N=2 topological superconductor junction and the Y-junction. On one hand, this allows us to determine the range of the system parameters in which a stable phase of the N=2 junction is realized as a nontrivial, finite-coupling fixed point corresponding to the M-fixed point in the phase diagram of the Y-junction. On the other hand, it enables us to show the occurrence of a novel "planar" finite-coupling fixed point in the phase diagram of the Y-junction. Eventually, we discuss how to set the system's parameters to realize the correspondence.

We analyze the crossover from Kondo to weak-link regime by means of a model of tunable bond impurities in the middle of a spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain. We study the Kondo screening cloud and estimate the Kondo length by combining perturbative renormalization group approach with the exact numerical calculation of the integrated real-space spin-spin correlation functions. We show that, when the spin impurity is symmetrically coupled to the two parts of the chain with realistic values of the Kondo coupling strengths and spin-parity symmetry is preserved, the Kondo length takes values within the reach of nowadays experimental technology in ultracold-atom setups. In the case of non-symmetric Kondo couplings and/or spin parity broken by a nonzero magnetic field applied to the impurity, we discuss how Kondo screening redistributes among the chain as a function of the asymmetry in the couplings and map out the shrinking of the Kondo length when the magnetic field induces a crossover from Kondo impurity to weak-link physics.

We describe a method to probe the quantum phase transition between the short-range topological phase and the long-range topological phase in the superconducting Kitaev chain with long-range pairing, both exhibiting subgap modes localized at the edges. The method relies on the effects of the finite mass of the subgap edge modes in the long-range regime (which survives in the thermodynamic limit) on the single-particle scattering coefficients through the chain connected to two normal leads. Specifically, we show that, when the leads are biased at a voltage V with respect to the superconducting chain, the Fano factor is either zero (in the short-range correlated phase) or 2e (in the long-range correlated phase). As a result, we find that the Fano factor works as a directly measurable quantity to probe the quantum phase transition between the two phases. In addition, we note a remarkable "critical fractionalization effect" in the Fano factor, which is exactly equal to e along the quantum critical line. Finally, we note that a dual implementation of our proposed device makes it suitable as a generator of large-distance entangled two-particle states.

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of a two dimensional square lattice loaded by spinless fermions, with nearest neighbor hopping and algebraically decaying pairing. We find that for sufficiently long-range pairing, new phases, not continuously connected with any short-range phase, occur, signaled by the violation of the area law for the Von Neumann entropy, by semi-integer Chern numbers, and by edge modes with nonzero mass. The latter feature results in the absence of single-fermion edge conductivity, present instead in the short- range limit. The definition of a topology in the bulk and the presence of a bulk-boundary correspondence is still suggested for the long-range phases. Recent experimental proposals and advances open the stimulating possibility to probe the described long-range effects in next-future realistic set-ups.

We study finite size scaling for the magnetic observables of an impurity residing at the endpoint of an open quantum Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field, realized by locally rescaling the magnetic field by a factor $μ\neq 1$. In the homogeneous chain limit at $μ= 1$, we find the expected finite size scaling for the longitudinal impurity magnetization, with no specific scaling for the transverse magnetization. At variance, in the classical impurity limit, $μ= 0$, we recover finite scaling for the longitudinal magnetization, while the transverse one basically does not scale. For this case, we provide both analytic approximate expressions for the magnetization and the susceptibility as well as numerical evidences for the scaling behavior. At intermediate values of $μ$, finite size scaling is violated, and we provide a possible explanation of this result in terms of the appearance of a second, impurity related length scale. Finally, on going along the standard quantum-to-classical mapping between statistical models, we derive the classical counterpart of the quantum Ising chain with an impurity at its endpoint as a classical Ising model on a square lattice wrapped on a half-infinite cylinder, with the links along the first circle modified as a function of $μ$.

Using the properties of the transfer matrix of one-dimensional quantum mechanical systems, we derive a technique to exactly compute the persistent current across a hybrid normal-superconducting-mesoscopic ring pierced by a magnetic flux Phi as a single integral of a known function of the system's parameters. Our approach provides exact results at zero temperature, which can be readily extended to finite temperatures T much below the superconducting gap. We apply our technique to derive the persistent current through p-wave and s-wave superconducting-normal hybrid rings, recovering at once a number of effects such as the crossover in the current periodicity on increasing the size of the ring and the signature of the topological phase transition in the p-wave case. In the limit of a large ring size, resorting to a systematic expansion in inverse powers of the ring length, we derive exact analytic closed-form formulas, applicable to a number of cases of physical interest.

We consider the Kondo effect in Y-junctions of anisotropic XY models in an applied magnetic field along the critical lines characterized by a gapless excitation spectrum. We find that, while the boundary interaction Hamiltonian describing the junction can be recasted in the form of a four-channel, spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo Hamiltonian, the number of channels effectively participating in the Kondo effect depends on the chain parameters, as well as on the boundary couplings at the junction. The system evolves from an effective four-channel topological Kondo effect for a junction of XX-chains with symmetric boundary couplings into a two-channel one at a junction of three quantum critical Ising chains. The effective number of Kondo channels depends on the properties of the boundary and of the bulk. The XX-line is a "critical" line, where a four-channel topological Kondo effect can be recovered by fine-tuning the boundary parameter, while along the line in parameter space connecting the extreme regimes, XX-line and the critical Ising point the junction is effectively equivalent to a two-channel topological Kondo Hamiltonian. Using a renormalization group approach, we determine the flow of the boundary couplings, which allows us to define and estimate the critical couplings and Kondo temperatures of the different Kondo (pair) channels. Finally, we study the local transverse magnetization in the center of the Y-junction, eventually arguing that it provides an effective tool to monitor the onset of the two-channel Kondo effect.

The dc Josephson current across a multi-channel SNS junction is computed by summing contributions from sub-gap Andreev bound states, as well as from continuum states propagating within the superconducting leads. We show that, in a long multi-channel SNS-junction, at low temperatures, all these contributions add up, so that the current can be entirely expressed in terms of single-particle normal- and Andreev reflection amplitudes at the Fermi level at both SN interfaces. Our derivation applies to a generic number of channels in the normal region and/or in the superconducting leads, without assumptions about scattering processes at the SN interfaces: if the channels within the central region have the same dispersion relation, it leads to simple analytical formulas for the current at low temperatures; if the channels within the central region have different dispersion relations, it allows for expressing the current in terms of a simple integral involving only scattering amplitudes at the Fermi level. Our result motivates using a low energy effective boundary Hamiltonian formalism for computing the current, which is crucial for treating Luttinger liquid interaction effects.

When only part of the wire contacts the superconductor, a localized Majorana mode exists at the junction between superconducting and normal parts of the nanowire. We then compare such results with those based on DMRG numerical simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model for various values of U and for a number L of lattice sites as low as L ~ 30. We find an excellent agreement up to 10% between the output of analytical and numerical computations, even for relatively small values of U. We prove that, in a pertinent range of the fabrication and control parameters, an attractive finite coupling fixed point emerges due to the geometry of the composite Josephson junction network. We show that this new stable phase is characterized by the emergence of a quantum doublet which is robust not only against the noise in the external control parameters (magnetic flux, gate voltage) but also against the decoherence induced by the coupling of the tetrahedral qubit with the superconducting leads. We analyze a perturbation of the boundary Sine-Gordon model where two boundary terms of different periodicities and scaling dimensions are coupled to a Kondo-like spin degree of freedom. We show that, by pertinently engineering the coupling with the spin degree of freedom, a competition between the two boundary interactions may be induced, and that this gives rise to nonpertubative phenomena, such as the emergence of novel quantum phases: indeed, we demonstrate that the strongly coupled fixed point may become unstable as a result of the "deconfinement" of a new set of phase-slip operators -the short instantons- associated with the less relevant boundary operator.
We point out that a Josephson junction network with a pertinent impurity located at its center provides a physical realization of this boundary double Sine-Gordon model. For this Josephson junction network, we prove that the competition between the two boundary interactions stabilizes a robust finite coupling fixed point and, at a pertinent scale, allows for the onset of $4e$ superconductivity.

We investigate the entanglement content of the ground state of a system characterized by effective elementary degrees of freedom with fractional statistics. To this end, we explicitly construct the ground state for a chain of $N$ spins with inverse square interaction (the Haldane-Shastry model) in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field. For such a system at zero temperature, we evaluate the entanglement in the ground state both at finite size and in the thermodynamic limit. We relate the behavior of the quantum correlations with the spinon condensation phenomenon occurring at the saturation field.

Pairing of Cooper pairs in a Josephson junction network containing an impurity
Authors:

Abstract:
We show how to induce pairing of Cooper pairs (and, thus, $4e$ superconductivity) as a result of local embedding of a quantum impurity in a Josephson network fabricable with conventional junctions. We find that a boundary double Sine-Gordon model provides an accurate description of the dc Josephson current patterns, as well as of the stable phases accessible to the network. We point out that tun…

We point out that tunneling of pairs of Cooper pairs is robust against quantum fluctuations, as a consequence of the time reversal invariance, arising when the central region of the network is pierced by a dimensionless magnetic flux $φ= π$. We find that, for $φ= π$, a stable attractive finite coupling fixed point emerges and point out its relevance for engineering a two level quantum system with enhanced coherence.

Abstract:
We show that, for pertinent values of the fabrication and control parameters, an attractive finite coupling fixed point emerges in the phase diagram of a Y-junction of superconducting Josephson chains. The new fixed point arises only when the dimensionless flux $f$ piercing the central loop of the network equals $π$ and, thus, does not break time-reversal invariance; for $f \neq π$, only the str…

We show that, for pertinent values of the fabrication and control parameters, an attractive finite coupling fixed point emerges in the phase diagram of a Y-junction of superconducting Josephson chains. The new fixed point arises only when the dimensionless flux $f$ piercing the central loop of the network equals $π$ and, thus, does not break time-reversal invariance; for $f \neq π$, only the strongly coupled fixed point survives as a stable attractive fixed point. Phase slips (instantons) have a crucial role in establishing this transition: we show indeed that, at
$f = π$, a new set of instantons -the W-instantons- comes into play to destabilize the strongly coupled fixed point.
Finally, we provide a detailed account of the Josephson current-phase relationship along the arms of the network, near each one of the allowed fixed points. Our results evidence remarkable similarities between the phase diagram accessible to a Y-junction of superconducting Josephson chains and the one found in the analysis of quantum Brownian motion on frustrated planar lattices.

We examine the possibility that pertinent impurities in a condensed matter system may help in designing quantum devices with enhanced coherent behaviors. For this purpose, we analyze a field theory model describing Y- shaped superconducting Josephson networks. We show that a new finite coupling stable infrared fixed point emerges in its phase diagram; we then explicitly evidence that, when engineered to operate near by this new fixed point, Y-shaped networks support two-level quantum systems, for which the entanglement with the environment is frustrated. We briefly address the potential relevance of this result for engineering finite-size superconducting devices with enhanced quantum coherence. Our approach uses boundary conformal field theory since it naturally allows for a field-theoretical treatment of the phase slips (instantons), describing the quantum tunneling between degenerate levels.
