The LIGO-Virgo-Kagra collaboration has observed gravitational waves consistent with the mergers of a black hole and a neutron star, namely GW200105 and GW200115, providing evidence for such cataclysmic events. Although no electromagnetic counterpart was reported for either of these two events, under certain conditions black hole--neutron star mergers are expected to form a significant accretion disk and to produce both a short gamma ray burst and a kilonova, much as observed in the binary neutron star merger GW170817. Here, we extend our publicly available code \mhduet to study numerically the merger of a magnetized neutron star with a black hole. \mhduet employs Large Eddy Simulation techniques to help capture the magnetic field amplification resulting from turbulence and other sub-grid scale dynamics in the post-merger stage. In particular, we simulate a merger with parameters favorable to producing an accretion disk, focusing on the formation and dynamics of the turbulent disk and the resulting magnetic field amplification. Following the tidal disruption and during the formation of the accretion disk, the magnetic field undergoes significant amplification driven by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, reaching strengths of more than $10^{14}\,\rm{G}$ from a realistic initial strength of $10^{11}\,\rm{G}$ in short timescales of approximately $20\,\rm{ms}$. At later times in our simulations the magnetic field growth occurs at larger scales and is dominated mainly by magnetic winding.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) is an ideal X-ray spectroscopy method to push the combination of energy and time resolutions to the Fourier transform ultimate limit, because it is unaffected by the core-hole lifetime energy broadening. And in pump-probe experiments the interaction time is made very short by the same core-hole lifetime. RIXS is very photon hungry so it takes great advantage from high repetition rate pulsed X-ray sources like the European XFEL. The hRIXS instrument is designed for RIXS experiments in the soft X-ray range with energy resolution approaching the Fourier and the Heisenberg limits. It is based on a spherical grating with variable line spacing (VLS) and a position-sensitive 2D detector. Initially, two gratings are installed to adequately cover the whole photon energy range. With optimized spot size on the sample and small pixel detector the energy resolution can be better than 40 meV at any photon energy below 1000 eV. At the SCS instrument of the European XFEL the spectrometer can be easily positioned thanks to air-pads on a high-quality floor, allowing the scattering angle to be continuously adjusted over the 65-145 deg range. It can be coupled to two different sample interaction chamber, one for liquid jets and one for solids, each equipped at the state-of-the-art and compatible for optical laser pumping in collinear geometry. The measured performances, in terms of energy resolution and count rate on the detector, closely match design expectations. hRIXS is open to public users since the summer of 2022.

We present the new Guided Moments ($\texttt{GM}$) formalism for neutrino modeling in astrophysical scenarios like core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers. The truncated moments approximation ($\texttt{M1}$) and Monte-Carlo ($\texttt{MC}$) schemes have been proven to be robust and accurate in solving the Boltzmann's equation for neutrino transport. However, it is well-known that each method exhibits specific strengths and weaknesses in various physical scenarios. The $\texttt{GM}$ formalism effectively solves these problems, providing a comprehensive scheme capable of accurately capturing the optically thick limit through the exact $\texttt{M1}$ closure and the optically thin limit through a $\texttt{MC}$ based approach. In addition, the $\texttt{GM}$ method also approximates the neutrino distribution function with a reasonable computational cost, which is crucial for the correct estimation of the different neutrino-fluid interactions. Our work provides a comprehensive discussion of the formulation and application of the $\texttt{GM}$ method, concluding with a thorough comparison across several test problems involving the three schemes ($\texttt{M1}$, $\texttt{MC}$, $\texttt{GM}$) under consideration.

This finding builds the basis for exploring the assembly of far-from-equilibrium nanostructures at low temperatures.

Femtosecond transient soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here we present a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy & Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL). It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot-by-shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, the DSSC imaging detector, which is capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst, is employed and allows approaching the photon shot-noise limit. We review the setup and its capabilities, as well as the online and offline analysis tools provided to users.

Modeling correctly the transport of neutrinos is crucial in some astrophysical scenarios such as core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers. In this paper, we focus on the truncated-moment formalism, considering only the first two moments (M1 scheme) within the grey approximation, which reduces Boltzmann seven-dimensional equation to a system of $3+1$ equations closely resembling the hydrodynamic ones. Solving the M1 scheme is still mathematically challenging, since it is necessary to model the radiation-matter interaction in regimes where the evolution equations become stiff and behave as an advection-diffusion problem. Here, we present different global, high-order time integration schemes based on Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta (IMEX) methods designed to overcome the time-step restriction caused by such behavior while allowing us to use the explicit RK commonly employed for the MHD and Einstein equations. Finally, we analyze their performance in several numerical tests.

The complex electronic structure of metallic ferromagnets is determined by a balance between exchange interaction, electron hopping leading to band formation, and local Coulomb repulsion. The interplay between the respective terms of the Hamiltonian is of fundamental interest, since it produces most, if not all, of the exotic phenomena observed in the solid state. By combining high energy and temporal resolution in femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ab initio time-dependent density functional theory we analyze the electronic structure in fcc Ni on the time scale of these interactions in a pump-probe experiment. We distinguish transient broadening and energy shifts in the absorption spectra, which we demonstrate to be caused by electron repopulation and correlation-induced modifications of the electronic structure, respectively. Importantly, the theoretical description of this experimental result hence requires to take the local Coulomb interaction into account, revealing a temporal interplay between band formation, exchange interaction, and Coulomb repulsion.

We show that our previous work on Galilei and Carroll gravity, apt for particles, can be generalized to Galilei and Carroll gravity theories adapted to p-branes (p = 0, 1, 2, ...). Within this wider brane perspective, we make use of a formal map, given in the literature, between the corresponding p-brane Carroll and Galilei algebras where the index describing the directions longitudinal (transverse) to the Galilei brane is interchanged with the index covering the directions transverse (longitudinal) to the Carroll brane with the understanding that the time coordinate is always among the longitudinal directions. This leads among other things in 3D to a map between Galilei particles and Carroll strings and in 4D to a similar map between Galilei strings and Carroll strings. We show that this formal map extends to the corresponding Lie algebra expansion of the Poincaré algebra and, therefore, to several extensions of the Carroll and Galilei algebras including central extensions. We use this formal map to construct several new examples of Carroll gravity actions. Furthermore, we discuss the symmetry between Carroll and Galilei at the level of the p-brane sigma model action and apply this formal symmetry to give several examples of 3D and 4D particles and strings in a curved Carroll background.

We use time-resolved momentum microscopy at a free-electron laser (FEL) and extend orbital tomography into the time domain to image the electronic wave functions of excited molecular orbitals. This technique provides unprecedented insight into the ultrafast interplay between structural and electronic dynamics. In this work we prove general applicability and establish the experimental conditions at FEL sources to minimize space charge effects and radiation damage. We investigate a bilayer pentacene film on Ag(110) by optical laser pump and FEL probe experiments. From the momentum microscopy signal, we obtain time-dependent momentum maps of the excited-state dynamics of both pentacene layers separately. Combining experimental observations with a theoretical study, we interpret the observed signal for the bottom layer as resulting from the charge redistribution between the molecule and the substrate induced by excitation. We identify that the dynamics of the top pentacene layer resembles excited-state molecular dynamics.

It is shown that the action of the bosonic sector of D=11 supergravity may be obtained by means of a suitable scaling of the originally dimensionless fields of a generalized Chern-Simons action. This follows from the eleven-form CS-potential of the most general linear combination of closed, gauge invariant twelve-forms involving the sp(32)-valued two-form curvatures supplemented by a three-form field. In this construction, the role of the skewsymmetric four-index auxiliary function needed for the first order formulation of $D=11$ supergravity is played by the gauge field associated with the five Lorentz indices generator of the bosonic sp(32) subalgebra of osp(1|32).

New insight into the superconducting properties of HgBa2CuO4 (Hg-1201) cuprates is provided by combined measurements of the electrical resistivity and single crystal X-ray diffraction under pressure. The changes induced by increasing pressure up to 20GPa in optimally doped single crystals were investigated. The resistivity measurements as a function of temperature show a metallic behavior up to ~10GPa that gradually passes to an insulating state, typical of charge ordering, that totally suppresses superconductivity above 13GPa. The changes in resistivity are accompanied by the apparition of sharp Bragg peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns indicating that the charge ordering is accompanied by a 3D oxygen ordering appearing at 10GPa of wavevector [0.25, 0, L]. As pressure induces a charge transfer of about 0.02 at 10GPa, our results are the first observation of charge order competing with superconductivity that develops in the over-doped region of the phase diagram of a cuprate.

The contracted superalgebras are assumed to be given in terms of fermionic extensions of the M-theory superalgebra. We show that the only superalgebra of this type obtained by contraction is the only one for which the three-form of $D=11$ supergravity cannot be trivialized. Therefore, $D=11$ supergravity cannot be connected in this way with a contraction of $osp(1|32) \oplus osp(1|32)$.

The spin transition in LaCoO$_3$ has been investigated within the density-functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory formalism using continuous time quantum Monte Carlo. Calculations on the experimental rhombohedral atomic structure with two Co sites per unit cell show that an independent treatment of the Co atoms results in a ground state with strong charge fluctuations induced by electronic correlations. Each atom shows a contribution from either a $d^5$ or a $d^7$ state in addition to the main $d^6$ state. These states play a relevant role in the spin transition which can be understood as a low spin-high spin (LS-HS) transition with significant contributions ($\sim$ $10$ %) to the LS and HS states of $d^5$ and $d^7$ states respectively. A thermodynamic analysis reveals a significant kinetic energy gain through introduction of charge fluctuations, which in addition to the potential energy reduction lowers the total energy of the system.

We are interested in the branch locus ${\mathcal{B}_{g}}$ for $g>2$, i.e., the subset of $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ consisting of surfaces with automorphisms. It is well-known that the set of hyperelliptic surfaces (the hyperelliptic locus) is connected in $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ but the set of (cyclic) trigonal surfaces is not. By contrast, we show that for $g\geq 5$ the set of (cyclic) trigonal surfaces is connected in $\bar{\mathcal{M}_{g}}$. To do so we exhibit an explicit nodal surface that lies in the completion of every equisymmetric set of 3-gonal Riemann surfaces. For $p>3$ the connectivity of the $p$-gonal loci becomes more involved. We show that for $p\geq 11$ prime and genus $g=p-1$ there are one-dimensional strata of cyclic $p$-gonal surfaces that are completely isolated in the completion $\bar{\mathcal{B}_{g}}$ of the branch locus in $\bar{\mathcal{M}_{g}}$.

The present article is concerned with division algebras that are structurally close to alternative algebras, in the sense that they satisfy some identity or other algebraic property that holds for all alternative division algebras.
Motivated by Belousov's ideas on quasigroups, we explore a new approach to the classification of division algebras. By a detailed study of the representations of the Lie group of autotopies of real division algebras we show that, if the group of autotopies has a sufficiently rich structure then the algebra is isotopic to an alternative division algebra. On the other hand, it is straightforward to check that required conditions hold for large classes of real division algebras, including many defined by identites expressable in a quasigroup.
Some of the algebras that appear in our results are characterized by the existence of a well-behaved inversion map. We give an irredundant classification of these algebras in dimension 4, and partial results in the 8-dimensional case.

We describe the Filippov algebra cohomology relevant for the central extensions and infinitesimal deformations of FAs. It is seen that semisimple FAs do not admit central extensions and, moreover, that they are rigid. This extends the familiar Whitehead's lemma to all $n\geq 2$ FAs, n=2 being the standard Lie algebra case. When the n-bracket of the FAs is no longer required to be fully skewsymmetric one is led to the n-Leibniz (or Loday's) algebra structure. Using that FAs are a particular case of n-Leibniz algebras, those with an anticommutative n-bracket, we study the class of n-Leibniz deformations of simple FAs that retain the skewsymmetry for the first n-1 entires of the n-Leibniz bracket.

The n=3 simple FAs, however, admit a non-trivial one-parameter infinitesimal 3-Leibniz algebra deformation. This paper reviews the properties and applications of certain n-ary generalizations of Lie algebras in a self-contained and unified way. These generalizations are algebraic structures in which the two entries Lie bracket has been replaced by a bracket with n entries. Each type of n-ary bracket satisfies a specific characteristic identity which plays the rôle of the Jacobi identity for Lie algebras. Particular attention will be paid to generalized Lie algebras, which are defined by even multibrackets obtained by antisymmetrizing the associative products of its n components and that satisfy the generalized Jacobi identity (GJI), and to Filippov (or n-Lie) algebras, which are defined by fully antisymmetric n-brackets that satisfy the Filippov identity (FI). Three-Lie algebras have surfaced recently in multi-brane theory in the context of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model. Because of this, Filippov algebras will be discussed at length, including the cohomology complexes that govern their central extensions and their deformations (Whitehead's lemma extends to all semisimple n-Lie algebras). When the skewsymmetry of the n-Lie algebra is relaxed, one is led the n-Leibniz algebras. These will be discussed as well, since they underlie the cohomological properties of n-Lie algebras.
The standard Poisson structure may also be extended to the n-ary case. We shall review here the even generalized Poisson structures, whose GJI reproduces the pattern of the generalized Lie algebras, and the Nambu-Poisson structures, which satisfy the FI and determine Filippov algebras. Finally, the recent work of Bagger-Lambert and Gustavsson on superconformal Chern-Simons theory will be briefly discussed. Emphasis will be made on the appearance of the 3-Lie algebra structure and on why the A_4 model may be formulated in terms of an ordinary Lie algebra, and on its Nambu bracket generalization.

We consider a D=4 two-twistor lagrangian for a massive particle that incorporates the mass-shell condition in an algebraic way, and extend it to a two-supertwistor model with N=2 supersymmetry and central charge identified with the mass. In the purely supertwistorial picture the two D=4 supertwistors are coupled through a Wess-Zumino term in their fermionic sector. We demonstrate how the kappa-gauge symmetry appears in the purely supertwistorial formulation and reduces by half the fermionic degrees of freedom of the two supertwistors; a formulation of the model in terms of kappa-invariant degrees of freedom is also obtained. We show that the kappa-invariant supertwistor coordinates can be obtained by dimensional (D=6 -> D=4) reduction from a D=6 supertwistor. We derive as well by 6 -> 4 reduction the N=2, D=4 massive superparticle model with Wess-Zumino term introduced in 1982. Finally, we comment on general superparticle models constructed with more than two supertwistors.

Our actions correspond to the spacetime scale-invariant ones previously considered by Bergshoeff et al. once the worldvolume forms introduced there are reinterpreted in terms of fields associated with the coordinates of the enlarged superspaces. It is shown that the kappa-symmetry of the new actions is given by a certain type of right local transformations of the extended superspace groups. Further, we also show that the enlarged superspaces that allow for strictly invariant Wess-Zumino terms also lead to strict kappa-invariance i.e., the Lagrangian itself (not only the action) is both supersymmetry- and kappa-invariant.

By relating the notions of Killing spinors and BPS preons, we develop a moving G-frame method (G=GL(32,R), SL(32,R) or Sp(32,R)) to analyze their associated generalized holonomies. As a first application we derive here the equations determining the generalized holonomies of k/32 supersymmetric solutions and, in particular, those solving the necessary conditions for the existence of BPS preonic (31/32) solutions of the standard D=11 supergravity. We also show that there exist elementary preonic solutions, i.e. solutions preserving 31 out of 32 supersymmetries in a Chern--Simons type supergravity. We present as well a family of worldvolume actions describing the motion of pointlike and extended BPS preons in the background of a D'Auria-Fre type OSp(1|32)-related supergravity model. We discuss the possible implications for M-theory.

Abstract:
We report here on the electronic structure of electron-doped half-metallic ferromagnetic perovskites such Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeMoO$_6$ ($x$=0-0.6) as obtained from high-resolved valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (PES). By comparing the PES spectra with band structure calculations, a distinctive peak at the Fermi level (E$_F$) with predominantly (Fe+Mo) t$_{2g}^\downarrow$ character has been e…

We report here on the electronic structure of electron-doped half-metallic ferromagnetic perovskites such Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeMoO$_6$ ($x$=0-0.6) as obtained from high-resolved valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (PES). By comparing the PES spectra with band structure calculations, a distinctive peak at the Fermi level (E$_F$) with predominantly (Fe+Mo) t$_{2g}^\downarrow$ character has been evidenced for all samples, irrespectively of the $x$ values investigated. Moreover, we show that the electron doping due to the La substitution provides selectively delocalized carriers to the t$_{2g}^\downarrow$ metallic spin channel. Consequently, a gradual rising of the density of states at the E$_F$ has been observed as a function of the La doping. By changing the incoming photon energy we have shown that electron doping mainly rises the density of states of Mo parentage. These findings provide fundamental clues for understanding the origin of ferromagnetism in these oxides and shall be of relevance for tailoring oxides having still higher T$_C$.

We point out that the worldvolume coordinate functions $\hat{x}^μ(ξ)$ of a $p$-brane, treated as an independent object interacting with dynamical gravity, are Goldstone fields for spacetime diffeomorphisms gauge symmetry. The presence of this gauge invariance is exhibited by its associated Noether identity, which expresses that the source equations follow from the gravitational equations. We discuss the spacetime counterpart of the Higgs effect and show that a $p$-brane does not carry any local degrees of freedom, extending early known general relativity features. Our considerations are also relevant for brane world scenarios.

Abstract:
We study how to generate new Lie algebras $\mathcal{G}(N_0,..., N_p,...,N_n)$ from a given one $\mathcal{G}$. The (order by order) method consists in expanding its Maurer-Cartan one-forms in powers of a real parameter $λ$ which rescales the coordinates of the Lie (super)group $G$, $g^{i_p} \to λ^p g^{i_p}$, in a way subordinated to the splitting of $\mathcal{G}$ as a sum…

The (order by order) method consists in expanding its Maurer-Cartan one-forms in powers of a real parameter $λ$ which rescales the coordinates of the Lie (super)group $G$, $g^{i_p} \to λ^p g^{i_p}$, in a way subordinated to the splitting of $\mathcal{G}$ as a sum $V_0 \oplus ... \oplus V_p \oplus ... \oplus V_n$ of vector subspaces. We also show that, under certain conditions, one of the obtained algebras may correspond to a generalized İnönü-Wigner contraction in the sense of Weimar-Woods, but not in general. The method is used to derive the M-theory superalgebra, including its Lorentz part, from $osp(1|32)$. It is also extended to include gauge free differential (super)algebras and Chern-Simons theories, and then applied to D=3 CS supergravity.

We review recent progress in a fully dynamical Lagrangian description of the supergravity-superbrane interaction. It suggests that the interacting superfield action, when it exists, is gauge equivalent to the component action of dynamical supergravity interacting with the bosonic limit of the superbrane.

We consider the interacting system of D=4 N=1 supergravity and the Brink-Schwarz massless superparticle as described by the sum of their superfield actions, and derive the complete set of superfield equations of motion for the coupled dynamical system. These include source terms given by derivatives of a vector superfield current density with support on the worldline. This current density is constructed from the spin 3/2 and spin 2 current density `prepotentials'. We analyze the gauge symmetry of the coupled action and show that it is possible to fix the gauge in such a way that the equations of motion reduce to those of the supergravity-bosonic particle coupled system.
