We study the transport properties of underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$ with doping level $p$ = 0.1 - 0.12 in magnetic field up to 88 T. We report for the first time in a cuprate superconductor a dramatic change of the quantum oscillation spectrum versus temperature, which is accompanied by a sign change of the Hall effect below $T \approx$ 10 K. Based on numerical simulations, we infer a Fermi surface reconstruction in the inner plane from an antiferromagnetic state (hole pockets) to a biaxial charge density wave state (electron pockets). We show that both orders compete and share the same hotspots of the Fermi surface and we discuss our result in the context of spin-fermion models.

Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ has been established as a prototype of magnetic Weyl semimetal, exhibiting a ''giant'' anomalous Hall effect in its ferromagnetic phase. An attractive feature of this material is that Weyl points lie close to Fermi level, so that one can expect a high reactivity of the topological properties to hole or electron doping. We present here a direct observation with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy of the evolution of the electronic structure under different types of substitutions : In for Sn (hole doping outside the kagome Co plane), Fe for Co (hole doping inside the kagome Co plane) and Ni for Co (electron doping inside the kagome Co plane). We observe clear shifts of selected bands, which are due both to doping and to the reduction of the magnetic splitting by doping. We discriminate between the two by studying the temperature evolution from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state. We discuss these shifts with the help of DFT calculations using the Virtual Crystal Approximation. We find that these calculations reproduce rather well the evolution with In, but largely fail to capture the effect of Fe and Ni, where local behavior at the impurity site plays an important role.

Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7 form two families of spin-orbit Mott insulators with quite different charge gaps and an antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state. This offers a unique opportunity to study the impact of long-range magnetic order in Mott insulators. It appears to play a different role in the two families, as there is almost no change of the resistivity at the magnetic transition TN in Sr2IrO4 and a large one in Sr3Ir2O7. We use angle-resolved photoemission to study the evolution of the spectral lineshape through the magnetic transition. We use Ru and La substitutions to tune TN and discriminate changes due to temperature from those due to magnetic order. We evidence a shift and a transfer of spectral weight in the gap at TN in Sr3Ir2O7, which is absent in Sr2IrO4. We assign this behavior to a significantly larger coherent contribution to the spectral lineshape in Sr3Ir2O7, which evolves strongly at TN. On the contrary, the Sr2IrO4 lineshape is dominated by the incoherent part, which is insensitive to TN. We compare these findings to theoretical expections of the Slater vs Mott antiferromagnetism within Dynamical Mean Field Theory.

We followed step by step the transition from an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator to a superconducting (SC) metal in the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) cuprate using the electronic Raman scattering spectroscopy. This was achieved by tracking the doping dependence of the spin singlet excitation originate from the AF Mott insulator, the normal state quasiparticles excitation related to the mobile charge carriers and the Bogoliubov quasiparticles related to the SC gap. We show that the signature of the pseudogap phase which develops during this transition, can be interpreted as the blocking of charge carriers by the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic correlations as the temperature drops. We find that the energy scale of the pseudogap, $Δ_{\textrm{pg}}(p)$, closely follows the one of the spin singlet excitation, $Δ_{\textrm{sse}}(p)$, with doping $p$. The quasiparticles lifetime considerably increases with doping when the pseudogap collapses. We reveal that the maximum amplitude of the SC gap, $Δ_{\textrm{sc}}^{\textrm{max}}$ and the SC transition temperature \Tc are linked in an extended range of doping such as $Δ_{\textrm{sc}}^{\textrm{max}}(p) \propto Δ_{\textrm{sse}}(p)\, T_c(p)$. This relation suggests that the AF correlations play a key role in the mechanism of superconductivity.

Anisotropic strain is an external field capable of selectively addressing the role of nematic fluctuations in promoting superconductivity. We demonstrate this using polarization-resolved elasto-Raman scattering to probe the evolution of nematic fluctuations under strain in the normal and superconducting states of the paradigmatic iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. In the non-superconducting parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ we observe a strain-induced suppression of the nematic susceptibility which follows the expected behavior of an Ising order parameter under a symmetry breaking field. For the superconducting compound, the suppression of the nematic susceptibility correlates with the decrease of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$. Our results indicate a significant contribution of nematic fluctuations to electron pairing and validate theoretical scenarios of enhanced $T_c$ near a nematic quantum critical point.

This paper presents a study of the structure dynamics in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$. We combined first-principle calculations, infrared measurements and a thorough symmetry analysis. Our study confirms that $Pnma$ cannot be the space group of BaFe$_2$Se$_3$, even at room temperature. The phonons assignment requires $Pm$ to be the BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ space group, not only in the magnetic phase, but also in the paramagnetic phase at room temperature. This is due to a strong coupling between a short range spin-order along the ladders, and the lattice degrees of freedom associated with the Fe-Fe bond length. This coupling induces a change in the bond-length pattern from an alternated trapezoidal one (as in $Pnma$) to an alternated small/large rectangular one. Out of the two patterns, only the latter is fully compatible with the observed block-type magnetic structure. Finally, we propose a complete symmetry analysis of the BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ phase diagram in the 0-600\,K range.

We report on the formation of topological defects emerging from the cycloidal antiferromagnetic order at the surface of bulk BiFeO$_3$ crystals. Combining reciprocal and real-space magnetic imaging techniques, we first observe, in a single ferroelectric domain, the coexistence of antiferromagnetic domains in which the antiferromagnetic cycloid propagates along different wavevectors. We then show that the direction of these wavevectors is not strictly locked to the preferred crystallographic axes as continuous rotations bridge different wavevectors. At the junctions between the magnetic domains, we observe topological line defects identical to those found in a broad variety of lamellar physical systems with rotational symmetries. Our work establishes the presence of these magnetic objects at room temperature in the multiferroic antiferromagnet BiFeO$_3$, offering new possibilities for their use in spintronics.

Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$ and we report the first quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. The presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic metallic state that extends deep in the superconducting phase is a key ingredient that supports magnetically mediated pairing interaction in cuprates.

We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibility close to the nematic transition $T_S$. Its temperature dependence under strong strain follows qualitatively the expected behavior of an Ising order parameter under a symmetry breaking field. Our elasto-Raman study illustrates the interest of combining selective anisotropic strain with a symmetry resolved probe like Raman scattering. Elasto-Raman scattering can be applied to a wide variety of quantum materials where uniaxial strain tunes electronic orders.

We report a polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy study of the orbital dependence of the quasiparticles properties in the prototypical multi-band Fermi liquid Sr\textsubscript{2}RuO\textsubscript{4}. We show that the quasiparticle scattering rate displays $ω^{2}$ dependence as expected for a Fermi liquid. Besides, we observe a clear polarization-dependence in the energy and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate and mass, with the $d_{xz/yz}$ orbital derived quasiparticles showing significantly more robust Fermi liquid properties than the $d_{xy}$ orbital derived ones. The observed orbital dichotomy of the quasiparticles is consistent with the picture of Sr\textsubscript{2}RuO\textsubscript{4} as a Hund's metal. Our study establishes Raman scattering as a powerful probe of Fermi liquid properties in correlated metals.

One way to induce insulator to metal transitions in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 is to substitute iridium with transition metals (Ru, Rh). However, this creates intriguing inhomogeneous metallic states, which cannot be described by a simple doping effect. We detail the electronic structure of the Ru-doped case with angle-resolved photoemission and show that, contrary to Rh, it cannot be connected to the undoped case by a rigid shift. We further identify bands below $E_F$ coexisting with the metallic ones that we assign to non-bonding Ir sites. We rationalize the differences between Rh and Ru by a different hybridization with oxygen, which mediates the coupling to Ir and sensitively affects the effective doping. We argue that the spin-orbit coupling does not control neither the charge transfer nor the transition threshold.

Our analysis reveals that the increase of $T_c$ with pressure is slower in Hg-1223 cuprate compared to the Hg-1201 due to a charge carrier concentration imbalance (accentuated by pressure) between the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers of Hg-1223. We find that the energy variation under pressure of the apical oxygen mode from which the charge carriers are transferred to the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers, is the same for both the Hg-1223 and Hg-1223 cuprates and it is controlled by the inter-layer compressibility. At last, we show that the binding energy of the Cooper pairs related to the maximum amplitude of the $d-$ wave superconducting gap at the anti-nodes, does not follow $T_c$ with pressure. It decreases while $T_c$ increases. In the particular case of Hg-1201, the binding energy collapses from 10 to 2 $K_B T_c$ as the pressure increases up to 10 GPa. These direct spectroscopic observations joined to the fact that the binding energy of the Cooper pairs at the anti-nodes does not follow $T_c$ either with doping, raises the question of its link with the pseudogap energy scale which follows the same trend with doping.

The sound velocities of the (quasi)-longitudinal and of the two (quasi)-transverse acoustic waves along three independent directions of the (110) surface have been measured. Moreover, one surface wave and one longitudinal wave propagating perpendicular to the surface have been detected. Based on initial input values of the six independent Cij elastic constants determined by our density functional theory calculations and our eleven experimental velocities, the numerical resolution of the acoustic equations allows to determine all the Cij elastic constants of BFO. The propagation direction dependence of volume and surface waves phase velocities allows the unambiguously assignment of the waves, hence the polarization of phonons.

The specific heat $C$ of the single-layer cuprate superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ was measured in an underdoped crystal with $T_{\rm c} = 72$ K at temperatures down to $2$ K in magnetic fields up to $35$ T, a field large enough to suppress superconductivity at that doping ($p \simeq 0.09$). In the normal state at $H = 35$ T, a residual linear term of magnitude $γ= 12 \pm 2$ mJ/K$^2$mol is observed in $C/T$ as $T \to 0$, a direct measure of the electronic density of states. This high value of $γ$ has two major implications. First, it is significantly larger than the value measured in overdoped cuprates outside the pseudogap phase ($p >p^\star$), such as La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6 + δ}$ at $p \simeq 0.3$, where $γ\simeq 7$ mJ/K$^2$mol. Given that the pseudogap causes a loss of density of states, and assuming that HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ has the same $γ$ value as other cuprates at $p \simeq 0.3$, this implies that $γ$ in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ must peak between $p \simeq 0.09$ and $p \simeq 0.3$, namely at (or near) the critical doping $p^\star$ where the pseudogap phase is expected to end ($p^\star\simeq 0.2$). Secondly, the high $γ$ value implies that the Fermi surface must consist of more than the single electron-like pocket detected by quantum oscillations in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ at $p \simeq 0.09$, whose effective mass $m^\star= 2.7\times m_0$ yields only $γ= 4.0$ mJ/K$^2$mol. This missing mass imposes a revision of the current scenario for how pseudogap and charge order respectively transform and reconstruct the Fermi surface of cuprates.

For all the cuprates studied, we reveal universal doping dependencies which suggest that $2Δ_{\rm PG}$, $2Δ^{AN}_{\rm SC}$ and $2Δ_{\rm CDW}$ are governed by common microscopic interactions and that these interactions become relevant well above the superconducting transition at $T_c$. In sharp contrast, $2Δ^N_{\rm SC}$ tracks the doping dependence of $T_c$, appearing to be controlled by a different kind of interactions than the energy scales above.

Establishing the presence and the nature of a quantum critical point in their phase diagram is a central enigma of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It could explain their pseudogap and strange metal phases, and ultimately their high superconducting temperatures. Yet, while solid evidences exist in several unconventional superconductors of ubiquitous critical fluctuations associated to a quantum critical point, in the cuprates they remain undetected until now. Here using symmetry-resolved electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, we report the observation of enhanced electronic nematic fluctuations near the endpoint of the pseudogap phase. While our data hint at the possible presence of an incipient nematic quantum critical point, the doping dependence of the nematic fluctuations deviates significantly from a canonical quantum critical scenario. The observed nematic instability rather appears to be tied to the presence of a van Hove singularity in the band structure.

Complete structural characterization from single crystal X-ray diffraction data is given for the first time for different doping levels. The role of added gold on the doping is also investigated. We use here Angle-Resolved photoemission to investigate the MIT as a function of hole and electron doping in Sr3Ir2O7, obtained respectively by Ir/Rh and Sr/La substitutions. We show that there is a clear reduction as a function of doping of the gap between a lower and upper band on both sides of the Fermi level, from 0.2eV to 0.05eV. Although these two bands have a counterpart in band structure calculations, they are characterized by a very different degree of coherence. The upper band exhibits clear quasiparticle peaks, while the lower band is very broad and loses weight as a function of doping. Moreover, their ARPES spectral weights obey different periodicities, reinforcing the idea of their different nature. We argue that a very similar situation occurs in Sr2IrO4 and conclude that the physics of the two families is essentially the same.

The cuprate high temperature superconductors develop spontaneous charge density wave (CDW) order below a temperature $T_{CDW}$ and over a wide range of hole doping (p). An outstanding challenge in the field is to understand whether this modulated phase is related to the more exhaustively studied pseudogap and superconducting phases. To address this issue it is important to extract the energy scale $Δ_{CDW}$ associated with the charge modulations, and to compare it with the pseudogap (PG) $Δ_{PG}$ and the superconducting gap $Δ_{SC}$. However, while $T_{CDW}$ is well-characterized from earlier works little has been known about $Δ_{CDW}$ until now. Here, we report the extraction of $Δ_{CDW}$ for several cuprates using electronic Raman spectroscopy. Crucially, we find that, upon approaching the parent Mott state by lowering $p$, $Δ_{CDW}$ increases in a manner similar to the doping dependence of $Δ_{PG}$ and $Δ_{SC}$. This shows that CDW is an unconventional order, and that the above three phases are controlled by the same electronic correlations. In addition, we find that $Δ_{CDW} \approx Δ_{SC}$ over a substantial doping range, which is suggestive of an approximate emergent symmetry connecting the charge modulated phase with superconductivity.

These single crystals are unique with very high quality surface paving the way for spectroscopic, transport and thermodynamic probes in order to understand the hole-doped cuprate phase diagram. The superconductivity transition width of about 2 K indicates they are homogeneous. Annealing allows to optimize Tc up to Tc$^{max}$ = 133 K. We show for the first time that with adequate heat treatment, Hg-1223 can be largely under-doped and its doping level controlled. The perfectly linear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity observed as $T \rightarrow$ 0 in a variety of metals close to a quantum critical point is a major puzzle of condensed matter physics . Here we show that $T$-linear resistivity as $T \rightarrow$ 0 is a generic property of cuprates, associated with a universal scattering rate. We measured the low-temperature resistivity of the bi-layer cuprate Bi2212 and found that it exhibits a $T$-linear dependence with the same slope as in the single-layer cuprates Bi2201, Nd-LSCO and LSCO, despite their very different Fermi surfaces and structural, superconducting and magnetic properties. We then show that the $T$-linear coefficient (per CuO$_2$ plane), $A_1$, is given by the universal relation $A_1 T_F = h / 2e^2$, where $e$ is the electron charge, $h$ is the Planck constant and $T_F$ is the Fermi temperature. This relation, obtained by assuming that the scattering rate 1 / $τ$ of charge carriers reaches the Planckian limit whereby $\hbar / τ= k_B T$, works not only for hole-doped cuprates but also for electron-doped cuprates despite the different nature of their quantum critical point and strength of their electron correlations.

Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ remains a puzzling case among the extensively studied frustrated compounds of the rare-earth pyrochlore family. Indeed, while a first order transition towards a long-range antiferromagnetic state with the so-called Palmer-Chalker structure is theoretically predicted, it has not been observed yet, leaving the issue, as to whether it is a spin-liquid candidate, open. We report on neutron scattering and magnetization measurements which evidence a second order transition towards this Palmer-Chalker ordered state around 108 mK. Extreme care was taken to ensure a proper thermalization of the sample, which has proved to be crucial to successfully observe the magnetic Bragg peaks. At the transition, a gap opens in the excitations, superimposed on a strong quasielastic signal. The exchange parameters, refined from a spin wave analysis in applied magnetic field, confirm that Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ is a realization of the dipolar XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The proximity of competing phases and the strong XY anisotropy of the Er$^{3+}$ magnetic moment might be at the origin of enhanced fluctuations, leading to the unexpected nature of the transition, the low ordering temperature, and the observed multi-scale dynamics.

The latter is thus much smaller than for the cuprate and nickelate parent compounds, for which $δ$ $>$ 0.1 is obtained, which could be a consequence of larger steric effects. The influence of the oxygen doping state on resistivity is small, indicating also a poor charge transfer to the conduction band. It is shown that electrochemical intercalation of oxygen may also contribute to doping, when gating thin films with ionic liquid in the presence of water.

In Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d we track the superconducting pseudogap hallmark, a peak-dip feature, as a function of temperature T and doping p, well beyond the optimal one. We show that, at all temperatures under the superconducting dome, the pseudogap disappears at the doping pc, between 0.222 and 0.226, where also the normal-state pseudogap collapses at a Lifshitz transition. This demonstrates that the superconducting pseudogap boundary forms a vertical line in the T-p phase diagram.

We use angle-resolved photoemission to study the three dimensional (3D) electronic structure of Co pnictides ACo2As2 with A=Ba, Sr, Ca or a mixture of Sr and Ca. These compounds are isostructural to Fe based superconductors, but have one more electron in the Co $3d$ orbitals. Going from Ba to Ca, they become more and more 3D, eventually forming a 'collapsed' tetragonal phase, where the distance between CoAs layers is markedly reduced. The observed periodicity of the 3D electronic structure matches in each case that expected from the distance between the planes in the bulk. However, the electronic structure is better fitted by a calculation corresponding to a slab with 2 CoAs layers than to the bulk structure. We attribute this to subtle modifications of the 2D electronic structure induced by the truncation of the 3D dispersion at the surface in the ARPES measurement. We further study how this affects the electronic properties. We show that, despite this distortion, the electronic structure of CaCo2As2 is essentially that expected for a collapsed phase. Electronic correlations produce a renormalization of the electronic structure by a factor 1.4, which is not affected by the transition to the collapsed state. On the other hand, a small shift of the Fermi level reduces the density of states in the eg bands and suppresses the magnetic transition expected in CaCo2As2. Our study evidences that observing the bulk periodicity is not sufficient to ensure bulk sensitivity. It further gives direct information on the role of 3D interactions, mostly governed by Co-As hybridization, among eg and t2g orbitals. It is also useful to better understand the electronic structure of Fe superconductors and the range of validity of ARPES measurements.

The 75% change in coercivity in the Ni film is achieved via optical and nonvolatile control. This photoferromagnetic effect can be reversed by static or ac electric depolarization of BiFeO3. Hence, the strain dependent changes in magnetic properties are written optically, and erased electrically. Light-mediated straintronics is therefore a possible approach for low-power multistate control of magnetic elements relevant for memory and spintronic applications.

In iron-based superconductors, a spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is suppressed with doping and unconventional superconductivity appears in close proximity to the SDW instability. The optical response of the SDW order shows clear gap features: substantial suppression in the low-frequency optical conductivity, alongside a spectral weight transfer from low to high frequencies. Here, we study the detailed temperature dependence of the optical response in three different series of the Ba122 system [Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$]. Intriguingly, we found that the suppression of the low-frequency optical conductivity and spectral weight transfer appear at a temperature $T^{\ast}$ much higher than the SDW transition temperature $T_{SDW}$. Since this behavior has the same optical feature and energy scale as the SDW order, we attribute it to SDW fluctuations. Furthermore, $T^{\ast}$ is suppressed with doping, closely following the doping dependence of the nematic fluctuations detected by other techniques. These results suggest that the magnetic and nematic orders have an intimate relationship, in favor of the magnetic-fluctuation-driven nematicity scenario in iron-based superconductors.

We find that both quantities depend on orbital character rather than on the position on the Fermi Surface (for example hole or electron pocket). In LiFeAs, the renormalizations are larger for $d_{xy}$, while they are similar on both types of orbitals in Co8. The most salient feature, which proved robust against all the ARPES caveats we could think of, is that the lifetimes for $d_{xy}$ exhibit a markedly different behavior than those for $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$. They have smaller values near $E_F$ and exhibit larger $ω$ and temperature dependences. While the behavior of $d_{xy}$ is compatible with a Fermi liquid description, it is not the case for $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$. This situation should have important consequences for the physics of iron pnictides, which have not been considered up to now. More generally, it raises interesting questions on how a Fermi liquid regime can be established in a multiband system with small effective bandwidths.

Our main finding is that the superconducting pair-breaking peak is associated with a dip on its higher-energy side, disappearing together at Tc. This result hints at an unconventional pairing mechanism, whereas spectral weight lost in the dip is transferred to the pair-breaking peak at lower energies. This conclusion is supported by cellular dynamical mean-field theory on the Hubbard model, which is able to reproduce all the main features of the B1g Raman response and explain the peak-dip behavior in terms of a nontrivial relationship between the superconducting and the pseudo gaps.

The critical scaling across $T_c$ of the longitudinal magnetization is the one expected for the 2D XY universality class. Modeling the torque for a magnetic field in the basal-plane, and taking into account all in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic couplings, we derive the effective 4-fold anisotropy $K_4 \approx$ 1 10$^5$ erg mole$^{-1}$. Although larger than for the cuprates, it is found too small to account for a significant departure from the isotropic 2D XY model. The in-plane torque also allows us to put an upper bound for the anisotropy of a field-induced shift of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature.

New insight into the superconducting properties of HgBa2CuO4 (Hg-1201) cuprates is provided by combined measurements of the electrical resistivity and single crystal X-ray diffraction under pressure. The changes induced by increasing pressure up to 20GPa in optimally doped single crystals were investigated. The resistivity measurements as a function of temperature show a metallic behavior up to ~10GPa that gradually passes to an insulating state, typical of charge ordering, that totally suppresses superconductivity above 13GPa. The changes in resistivity are accompanied by the apparition of sharp Bragg peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns indicating that the charge ordering is accompanied by a 3D oxygen ordering appearing at 10GPa of wavevector [0.25, 0, L]. As pressure induces a charge transfer of about 0.02 at 10GPa, our results are the first observation of charge order competing with superconductivity that develops in the over-doped region of the phase diagram of a cuprate.

Optical spectroscopy has been combined with computational and theoretical techniques to show how the spin dynamics in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 responds to the application of hydrostatic pressure and its corresponding series of structural phase transitions from R3c to the Pnma phases. As pressure increases, multiple spin excitations associated with non-collinear cycloidal magnetism collapse into two excitations, which show jump discontinuities at some of the ensuing crystal phase transitions. Effective Hamiltonian approach provides information on the electrical polarization and structural changes of the oxygen octahedra through the successive structural phases. The extracted parameters are then used in a Ginzburg-Landau model to reproduce the evolution with pressure of the spin waves excitations observed at low energy and we demonstrate that the structural phases and the magnetic anisotropy drive and control the spin excitations.

Electronic Raman scattering with in and out of (ab) plane polarizations have been performed on HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d in a slightly underdoped single crystal with a critical temperature Tc=122 K. We find that the d-wave pairing gap at the antinodes is higher in energy (14 kBTc) than in other cuprates and that it varies very slowly up to Tc. This hints at a strong coupling nature of the pairing mechanism. Interestingly, we reveal that the pairing-gap feature in the Raman response displays a complex peak-dip-hump structure, in a fashion reminiscent of what observed by angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212). We detect two other distinct superconducting peaks at 5kBTc and 7kBTc when probing respectively around the nodes and on the whole Fermi surface. Finally we establish that the pairing gap at the antinodes is detected both for (ab) plane and for c-axis light polarizations. This shows that the quasiparticle dynamics along the c-axis is intimately connected to the antinodal one in the (ab) plane.

We explored by electronic Raman scattering the superconducting state of Bi-2212 single crystal by performing a fine tuned doping study. We found three distinct energy scales in A1g, B1g and B2g symmetries which show three distinct doping dependencies. Above p=0.22 the three energies merge, below p=0.12, the A1g scale is no more detectable while the B1g and B2g scales become constant in energy. In between, the A1g and B1g scales increase monotonically with under-doping while the B2g one exhibits a maximum at p=0.16. The three superconducting energy scales appear to be an universal feature of hole-doped cuprates. We propose that the non trivial doping dependence of the three scales originates from Fermi surface topology changes and reveals competing orders inside the superconducting dome.

The effect of K, Co and P dopings on the lattice dynamics in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system is studied by infrared spectroscopy. We focus on the phonon at $\sim$ 253 cm$^{-1}$, the highest energy in-plane infrared-active Fe-As mode in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Our studies show that the Co and P dopings lead to a blue shift of this phonon in frequency, which can be simply interpreted by the change of lattice parameters induced by doping. In sharp contrast, an unusual red shift of the same mode was observed in the K-doped compound, at odds with the above explanation. This anomalous behavior in K-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is more likely associated with the coupling between lattice vibrations and other channels, such as charge or spin. This coupling scenario is also supported by the asymmetric line shape and intensity growth of the phonon in the K-doped compound.

We show that, contrary to previous belief, the transition to the antiferromagnetic state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ in zero magnetic field does show up in the transverse resistivity. We attribute this to a change in transverse integrals associated to the magnetic ordering, which is evaluated considering hopping of the localized charge. The evolution of the resistivity anomaly associated to the magnetic transition under applied magnetic field is studied. It tracks the magnetic phase diagram, allowing to identify three different lines, notably the spin-flip line, associated with the reordering of the ferromagnetic component of the magnetization, and an intriguing line for field induced magnetism, also corroborated by magnetization measurements.

We devise lineshapes appropriate for planar elliptical and collinear modulated magnetic structures and show that they reproduce very well the Mössbauer spectra in FeVO4, in full qualitative agreement with a previous neutron diffraction study. Quantitatively, our spectra provide precise determinations of the characteristics of the elliptical and modulated structures which are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction results. We find that the hyperfine field elliptical modulation persists as T goes to 0, which we attribute to an anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction since a moment modulation is forbidden at T=0 for a spin only ion like Fe3+.

We report a fine tuned doping study of strongly overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals using electronic Raman scattering. Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the doping, at which the normal state pseudogap closes, coincides with a Lifshitz quantum phase transition where the active hole-like Fermi surface becomes electron-like. This conclusion suggests that the microscopic cause of the pseudogap is sensitive to the Fermi surface topology. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting transition temperature is unaffected by this transition, demonstrating that their origins are different on the overdoped side.

We report electronic Raman scattering measurements of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in their magnetic - Spin Density Wave (SDW) phase. The spectra display multiple, polarization-resolved SDW gaps as expected in a band-folding itinerant picture for a multiband system. The temperature dependence of the SDW gaps reveals an unusual evolution of the reconstructed electronic structure with at least one gap being activated only well below the magnetic SDW transition $T_N$. A comparison with temperature dependent Hall measurements allows us to assign this activated behavior to a change in the Fermi surface topology deep in the SDW phase, which we attribute to the disappearance of a hole-like Fermi pocket. Our results highlight the strong sensitivity of the low energy electronic structure to temperature in iron-arsenide superconductors.

Large pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 Tesla are used to suppress the contribution of superconducting fluctuations (SCF) to the ab-plane conductivity above Tc in a series of YBa2Cu3O6+x single crystals. The fluctuation conductivity is found to vanish nearly exponentially with temperature, allowing us to determine precisely the field H'c(T) and the temperature T'c above which the SCFs are fully suppressed. T'c is always found much smaller than the pseudogap temperature. A careful investigation near optimal doping shows that T'c is higher than the pseudogap T*, which indicates that the pseudogap cannot be assigned to preformed pairs. For nearly optimally doped samples, the fluctuation conductivity can be accounted for by gaussian fluctuations following the Ginzburg-Landau scheme. A phase fluctuation contribution might be invoked for the most underdoped samples in a T range which increases when controlled disorder is introduced by electron irradiation. Quantitative analysis of the fluctuating magnetoconductance allows us to determine the critical field Hc2(0) which is found to be quite similar to H'c(0) and to increase with hole doping. Studies of the incidence of disorder on both T'c and T* enable us to propose a three dimensional phase diagram including a disorder axis, which allows to explain most observations done in other cuprate families.

We probe the real space electronic response to a local magnetic impurity in isovalent and heterovalent doped BaFe2As2 (122) using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The local moments carried by Mn impurities doped into Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2(Co-122) and BaFe(As1-xPx)2(P-122) at optimal doping induce a spin polarization in the vicinity of the impurity. The amplitude, shape and extension of this polarisation is given by the real part of the susceptibility chi'(r) of FeAs layers, and is consequently related to the nature and strength of the electronic correlations present in the system. We study this polarisation using 75As NMR in Co-122 and both 75As and 31P NMR in P-122. The NMR spectra of Mn-doped materials is made of two essential features. First is a satellite line associated with nuclei located as nearest neighbor of Mn impurities. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the shift of this satellite line shows that Mn local moments behave as isolated Curie moments. The second feature is a temperature dependent broadening of the central line. We show that the broadening of the central line follows the susceptibility of Mn local moments, as expected from typical RKKY-like interactions. This demonstrates that the susceptibility chi'(r) of FeAs layers does not make significant contribution to the temperature dependent broadening of the central line. chi'(r) is consequently only weakly temperature dependent in optimally doped Co-122 and P-122. This behaviour is in contrast with that of strongly correlated materials such as underdoped cuprate high-Tc superconductors where the central line broadens faster than the impurity susceptibility grows, because of the development of strong magnetic correlations when T is lowered. Moreover, the FeAs layer susceptibility is found quantitatively similar in both heterovalent doped and isolvalent doped BaFe2As2.

The longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistance (LMR) has been measured in different Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)2As2 single crystals and in LiFeAs. For all these compounds, we find a negative LMR in the paramagnetic phase whose magnitude increases as H^2. We show that this negative LMR can be readily explained in terms of suppression of the spin fluctuations by the magnetic field. In the Co-doped samples, the absolute value of the LMR coefficient is found to decrease with doping content in the paramagnetic phase. The analysis of its T dependence in an itinerant nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model evidences that the LMR displays a qualitative change of T variation with increasing Co content. The latter occurs at optimal doping for which the antiferromagnetic ground state is suppressed. The same type of analysis for the negative LMR measured in LiFeAs suggests that this compound is on the verge of magnetism.

The strong enhancement of the Raman response at low temperatures unveils an underlying charge nematic state that extends to superconducting compositions and which has hitherto remained unnoticed. Comparison between the extracted charge nematic susceptibility and the elastic modulus allows us to disentangle the charge contribution to the nematic instability, and to show that charge nematic fluctuations are weakly coupled to the lattice.

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the evolution of the number of carriers in Ba(Fe(1-x)Cox)2As2 as a function of Co content and temperature. We show that there is a k-dependent energy shift compared to density functional calculations, which is large at low Co contents and low temperatures and reduces the volume of hole and electron pockets by a factor 2. This k-shift becomes negligible at high Co content and could be due to interband charge or spin fluctuations. We further reveal that the bands shift with temperature, changing significantly the number of carriers they contain (up to 50%). We explain this evolution by thermal excitations of carriers among the narrow bands, possibly combined with a temperature evolution of the k-dependent fluctuations.

Whereas the insignificant modification of the temperature dependence of the superfluid density in Ba(Fe_1-xCo_x)_2As_2 and Ba(Fe_1-xNi_x)_2As_2 points to important native disorder present before the irradiation, the critical temperatures of these materials undergo a suppression equivalent to that observed in the much cleaner BaFe_2(As_1-xP_x)_2. This lends credence to the hypothesis of line nodes of the order parameter (at finite k_{z}) in the former two materials.

The penetration of magnetic flux fronts in the optimally-doped iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_2$ ($x = 0.07 \pm 0.005$) is studied by means of magneto-optical imaging and Bitter decoration. The higher-order analysis of roughening and growth of the magnetic flux front reveals anomalous scaling properties, indicative of non-Gaussian correlations of the disorder potential. While higher-order spatial correlation functions reveal multi-fractal behavior for the roughening, the usual Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth exponent is found. Both exponents are found to be independent of temperature. The scaling behavior is manifestly different from that found for other modes of flux penetration, such as that mediated by avalanches, suggesting that multi-scaling is a powerful tool for the characterization of roughened interfaces. We propose a scenario for vortex penetration based on two-dimensional percolation and cluster aggregation for an inhomogeneously disordered superconductor.
