The vortex ratchet effect has been studied in Al films patterned with square arrays of submicron antidots. We have investigated the transport properties of two sets of samples: (i) asymmetrical antidots where vortices are driven by an unbiased ac current, and (ii) symmetrical antidots where in addition to the ac drive a dc bias was used. For each sample, the rectified (dc) voltage is measured as a function of drive amplitude and frequency, magnetic field, and temperature. As unambiguously shown by our data, the voltage rectification in the asymmetric antidots is induced by the intrinsic asymmetry in the pinning potential created by the antidots, whereas the rectification in the symmetric antidots is induced by the dc bias. In addition, the experiments reveal interesting collective phenomena in the vortex ratchet effect. At fields below the first matching field ($H_1$), the dc voltage--ac drive characteristics present two rectification peaks, which is interpreted as an interplay between the one-dimensional motion of weakly pinned incommensurate vortex rows and the two-dimensional motion of the whole vortex lattice. We also discuss the different dynamical regimes controlling the motion of interstitial and trapped vortices at fields slightly higher than $H_1$ and their implications for the vortex ratchet effect.

A theoretical analysis based on a numerical solution of the coupled time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau and heat dissipation equations shows a strong dependence of the critical currents on the applied magnetic field in a mesoscopic square with attached contacts. In agreement with experiment we found hysteresis which are caused by a strong heat dissipation in the sample at currents close to the depairing Ginzburg-Landau current and/or the dynamics of the superconducting condensate. The theoretically obtained nonmonotonous dependence of the switching current (from superconducting to the resistive state) on the applied magnetic field, arising from the changes in the vorticity, agrees quantitatively with the experimental data. Our results show that heat dissipation leads to an increase of the hysteresis in the current-voltage characteristic and hence masks the actual dynamics of the superconducting condensate.

We study the transport of vortices excited by an ac current in an Al film with an array of nanoengineered asymmetric antidots. The vortex response to the ac current is investigated by detailed measurements of the voltage output as a function of ac current amplitude, magnetic field and temperature. The measurements revealed pronounced voltage rectification effects which are mainly characterized by the two critical depinning forces of the asymmetric potential. The shape of the net dc voltage as a function of the excitation amplitude indicates that our vortex ratchet behaves in a way very different from standard overdamped models. Rather, as demonstrated by the observed output signal, the repinning force, necessary to stop vortex motion, is considerably smaller than the depinning force, resembling the behavior of the so-called inertia ratchets. Calculations based on an underdamped ratchet model provide a very good fit to the experimental data.

We study the evolution of the superconducting state in a perforated disk by varying the size of the hole. The superconducting properties are investigated by means of transport measurements around the superconducting/normal phase boundary Tc(H). A transition from a one-dimensional to a two-dimensional regime is seen when increasing the magnetic field for disks with small holes. A good agreement is found between the measured Tc(H) line and the calculations performed in the framework of the linearized Ginzburg-Landau theory. The effect of breaking the axial symmetry of the structure by moving the hole away from the center of the disk is also studied. An enhanced critical field is found for the asymmetric structures, possibly due to the recovery of the singly connected state.

The dependence of the vortex penetration and expulsion on the geometry of mesoscopic superconductors is reported. Hall magnetometry measurements were performed on a superconducting Al square and triangle. The stability of the vortex patterns imposed by the sample geometry is discussed. The field-temperature $H-T$ diagram has been reconstructed showing the transitions between states with different vorticity. We have found that the vortex penetration is only weakly affected by the vortex configuration inside the sample while the expulsion is strongly controlled by the stability of the vortex patterns. A qualitative explanation for this observation is given.

We have designed and investigated a contactless magnetic phase shifter for flux-based superconducting qubits. The phase shifter is realized by placing a perpendicularly magnetized dot at the centre of a superconducting loop. The flux generated by this magnetic dot gives rise to an additional shielding current in the loop, which, in turn, induces a phase shift. By modifying the parameters of the dot an arbitrary phase shift can be generated in the loop. This magnetic phase shifter can, therefore, be used as an external current source in superconducting circuits, as well as a suitable tool to study fractional Josephson vortices.

The Al disk and magnetic dot are separated by an insulating layer, which ensures that there is only magnetic interaction between them. This hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet structure exhibits the maximum critical temperature for a finite value of the perpendicular applied magnetic field, which is parallel to the magnetization of magnetic dot. We have found a good agreement between the experimental data for the superconductor/normal metal phase boundary and the theoretical predictions based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory.

We study the magnetic interaction between two superconducting concentric mesoscopic Al loops, close to the superconducting/normal phase transition. The phase boundary is measured resistively for the two-loop structure as well as for a reference single loop. In both systems Little-Parks oscillations, periodic in field are observed in the critical temperature Tc versus applied magnetic field H. In the Fourier spectrum of the Tc(H) oscillations, a weak 'low frequency' response shows up, which can be attributed to the inner loop supercurrent magnetic coupling to the flux of the outer loop. The amplitude of this effect can be tuned by varying the applied transport current.

The rectangular dots can have two possible in-plane magnetic states: a single-domain state where the magnetization lies along the long axis of the dot and a multi-domain state. In this paper, we report on measurements of the field dependence of the critical current Ic(B) of the superconducting Pb film evaporated on top of this magnetic array. We observe a clear influence of the magnetic state of the dots on the pinning properties of the magnetic array, showing that there is an important pinning contribution due to the stray fields of the magnetic dots.
