Two-dimensional iron-chalcogenide intercalates display a remarkable correlation of the interlayer spacing with the enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$). In this work, synchrotron x-ray absorption ($XAS$, at Fe and Se K edges) and emission ($XES$) spectroscopies, allow to discuss how the important rise of $T_c$ (44 K) in the molecule intercalated $\rm Li_x(C_5H_5N)_yFe_{2-z}Se_2$ relates to the electronic and local structure changes felt by the inorganic host upon doping ($x$). $XES$ shows that widely-separated layers of edge-sharing $\rm FeSe_4$ tetrahedra, carry low-spin moieties with a local Fe magnetic moment slightly reduced compared to the parent $β$-$\rm Fe_{2-z}Se_2$. Pre-edge $XAS$ advises on the progressively reduced mixing of metal $3d-4p$ states upon lithiation. Doping-mediated local lattice modifications, probed by conventional $T_c$-optimization measures (cf. anion height and $FeSe_4$ tetrahedra regularity), become less relevant when layers are spaced far away. On the basis of extended x-ray absorption fine structure, such distortions are compensated by a softer Fe-network that relates to Fe-site vacancies, alleviating electron-lattice correlations and superconductivity. Density functional theory ($DFT$) guided modification of isolated $\rm Fe_{2-z}Se_2$ ($z$, vacant sites) planes, resembling the host layers, identify that Fe-site deficiency occurs at low energy cost, giving rise to stretched Fe-sheets, in accord with experiments. The robust high-$T_c$ in $\rm Li_x(C_5H_5N)_yFe_{2-z}Se_2$, arises from the interplay of electron donating spacers and the iron-selenide layers tolerance to defect chemistry, a tool to favorably tune its Fermi surface properties.

The niobium oxide polymorph T-Nb2O5 has been extensively investigated in its bulk form especially for applications in fast-charging batteries and electrochemical (pseudo)capacitors. Its crystal structure that has two-dimensional (2D) layers with very low steric hindrance allows for fast Li-ion migration. However, since its discovery in 1941, the growth of single-crystalline thin films and its electronic applications have not yet been realized, likely due to its large orthorhombic unit cell along with the existence of many polymorphs. Here we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline T-Nb2O5 thin films, critically with the ionic transport channels oriented perpendicular to the film's surface. These vertical 2D channels enable fast Li-ion migration which we show gives rise to a colossal insulator-metal transition where the resistivity drops by eleven orders of magnitude due to the population of the initially empty Nb 4d0 states by electrons. Moreover, we reveal multiple unexplored phase transitions with distinct crystal and electronic structures over a wide range of Li-ion concentrations by comprehensive in situ experiments and theoretical calculations, that allow for the reversible and repeatable manipulation of these phases and their distinct electronic properties. This work paves the way to the exploration of novel thin films with ionic channels and their potential applications.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays a crucial role in magnetic and electronic properties of 5$d$ iridates. In this paper we have experimentally investigated the structural and physical properties of a series of Ir-based double perovskite compounds Pr$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$MgIrO$_6$ ($x$ = 0, 0.5, 1; hereafter abbreviated as PMIO, PSMIO1505, and PSMIO). Interestingly, these compounds have recently been proposed to undergo a transition from the spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulating phase at $x$ = 0 to the elusive half-metallic antiferromagnetic (HMAFM) state with Sr doping at $x$ = 1. However, our detailed magnetic and electrical measurements refute any kind of HMAFM possibility in either of the doped samples. In addition, we establish that within these Pr$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$MgIrO$_6$ double perovskites, changes in Ir-oxidation states (4+ for PMIO to 5+ for PSMIO via mixed 4+/5+ for PSMIO1505) lead to markedly different magnetic behaviors. While SOC on Ir is at the root of the observed insulating behaviors for all three samples, the correlated magnetic properties of these three compounds develop entirely due to the contribution from local Ir moments. Additionally, the magnetic Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) ions, instead of showing any kind of ordering, only contribute to the total paramagnetic moment. It is seen that the PrSrMgIrO$_6$ sample does not order down to 2 K despite antiferromagnetic interactions. But, the $d^5$ iridate Pr$_2$MgIrO$_6$ shows a sharp antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at around 14 K, and in the mixed valent Pr$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MgIrO$_6$ sample the AFM transition is shifted to a much lower temperature ($\sim$ 6 K) due to weakening of the AFM exchange.

We consider parabolic flows on 3-dimensional manifolds which are renormalized by circle extensions of Anosov diffeormorphisms. This class of flows includes nilflows on the Heisenberg nilmanifold which are renormalized by partially hyperbolic automorphisms. The transfer operators associated to the renormalization maps, acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces, are known to have good spectral properties (this relies on ideas which have some resemblance to representation theory but also apply to non-algebraic systems). The spectral information is used to describe the deviation of ergodic averages and solutions of the cohomological equation for the parabolic flow.

The local structures of 122-type paradium arsenides, namely BaPd$_2$As$_2$ and SrPd$_2$As$_2$, are examined by As K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements to find a possible correlation between the variation of their superconducting transition temperature and the local structure. The local atomic distances are found to be consistent with average distances measured by diffraction techniques. The temperature dependence of mean square relative displacements reveal that, while BaPd$_2$As$_2$ is characterized by a local As-Pd soft mode, albeit with larger atomic disorder, SrPd$_2$As$_2$ shows anomalous As-Pd correlations with a kink at $\sim$160 K due to hardening by raising temperature. We have discussed implications of these results and possible mechanism of differing superconducting transition temperature in relation with the structural instability.

The local structure of correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr$_{2-x}$M$_x$IrO$_4$ (M = K, La) has been investigated by Ir L$_3$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The measurements were performed as a function of temperature for different dopings induced by substitution of Sr with La or K. It is found that Ir-O bonds have strong covalency and they hardly show any change across the Néel temperature. In the studied doping range, neither Ir-O bonds nor their dynamics, measured by their mean square relative displacements, show any appreciable change upon carrier doping, indicating possibility of a nanoscale phase separation in the doped system. On the other hand, there is a large increase of the static disorder in Ir-Sr correlation, larger for K doping than La doping. Similarities and differences with respect to the local lattice displacements in cuprates are briefly discussed.

The design consists of easily demountable and replaceable parts: body, kapton windows, silicon or viton o-rings, washers and a stopper screw. The pathlengths of the liquid chamber can be changed by simply substituting the elastomer o-ring, that can be cut from commercial silicon tubes, making the cell extremely customizable to overcome experimental constraints. The sealing of the liquid has been proved to be vacuum compatible. The compact and simple design makes the cell adjustable to cryogenic applications. Finally the advent of the 3d printing machines makes the cell potentially very competitive from a cost point of view (each unit is estimated less to be than 10 euros)

We derive asymptotic results for $P(V_{n}=k)$ that hold without assuming that $λ< +\infty$ or $m_n \to 0$. Also, we do not assume $k$ to be fixed, but instead, our results hold uniformly for all $k$ which satisfy particular growth conditions with respect to $n$. These results extend known Poisson local limit theorems to the case when $λ= +\infty$. While our results apply to triangular arrays, without the assumption that \(m_n \to 0\) they continue to hold for sums of Bernoulli random variables. In this setting, our growth conditions cover a range of values for $k$ not centered at $λ_n$, thus complementing known local limit theorems based on approximation by the normal distribution. In addition, we show that our local limit theorems apply to a scheme of dependent random variables introduced in the work of Sevast'yanov.

We provide an abstract framework for the study of certain spectral properties of parabolic systems; specifically, we determine under which general conditions to expect the presence of absolutely continuous spectral measures. We use these general conditions to derive results for spectral properties of time-changes of unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces of semisimple groups regarding absolutely continuous spectrum as well as maximal spectral type; the time-changes of the horocycle flow are special cases of this general category of flows. In addition we use the general conditions to derive spectral results for twisted horocycle flows and to rederive certain spectral results for skew products over translations and Furstenberg transformations.

The magnetic excitation spectrum in the bilayer iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ has been investigated using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) performed at the iridium L$_3$ edge and theoretical techniques. A study of the systematic dependence of the RIXS spectrum on the orientation of the wavevector transfer, $\mathbf{Q}$, with respect to the iridium-oxide bilayer has revealed that the magnon dispersion is comprised of two branches well separated in energy and gapped across the entire Brillouin zone. Our results contrast with those of an earlier study which reported the existence of a single dominant branch. While these earlier results were interpreted as two overlapping modes within a spin-wave model of weakly coupled iridium-oxide planes, our results are more reminiscent of those expected for a system of weakly coupled dimers. In this latter approach the lower and higher energy modes find a natural explanation as those corresponding to transverse and longitudinal fluctuations, respectively. We have therefore developed a bond-operator theory which describes the magnetic dispersion in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ in terms of quantum dimer excitations. In our model dimerisation is produced by the leading Heisenberg exchange, $J_c$, which couples iridium ions in adjacent planes of the bilayer. The Hamiltonian also includes in plane exchange, $J$, as well as further neighbour couplings and relevant anisotropies. The bond-operator theory provides an excellent account of the dispersion of both modes, while the measured $\mathbf{Q}$ dependence of the RIXS intensities is in reasonable qualitative accord with the spin-spin correlation function calculated from the theory. We discuss our results in the context of the quantum criticality of bilayer dimer systems in the presence of anisotropic interactions derived from strong spin-orbit coupling.

We have studied local magnetic moment and electronic phase separation in superconducting K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ by x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy. Detailed temperature dependent measurements at the Fe K-edge have revealed coexisting electronic phases and their correlation with the transport properties. By cooling down, the local magnetic moment of Fe shows a sharp drop across the superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) and the coexisting phases exchange spectral weights with the low spin state gaining intensity at the expense of the higher spin state. After annealing the sample across the iron-vacancy order temperature, the system does not recover the initial state and the spectral weight anomaly at T$_c$ as well as superconductivity disappear. The results clearly underline that the coexistence of the low spin and high spin phases and the transitions between them provide unusual magnetic fluctuations and have a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism of electronically inhomogeneous K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ system.

The nature of the electronic groundstate of Ba2IrO4 has been addressed using soft X-ray absorption and inelastic scattering techniques in the vicinity of the oxygen K edge. From the polarization and angular dependence of XAS we deduce an approximately equal superposition of xy, yz and zx Ir4+ 5d orbitals. By combining the measured orbital occupancies, with the value of the spin-orbit coupling provided by RIXS, we estimate the crystal field splitting associated with the tetragonal distortion of the IrO6 octahedra to be small, Δ=50(50) meV. We thus conclude definitively that Ba2IrO4 is a close realization of a spin-orbit Mott insulator with a jeff = 1/2 groundstate, thereby overcoming ambiguities in this assignment associated with the interpretation of X-ray resonant scattering experiments.

With further Ru substitution the static disorder increases while the Fe-As bond strength remains unchanged. We have measured local structure of superconducting K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2} chalcogenide (T_{c}=31.8 K) by temperature dependent polarized extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the Fe and Se K-edges. We find that the system is characterized by a large local disorder. The Fe-Se and Fe-Fe distances are found to be shorter than the distances measured by diffraction, while the corresponding mean square relative displacements reveal large Fe-site disorder and relatively large c-axis disorder. The local force constant for Fe-Se bondlength (k ~ 5.8 eV/Å^{2}) is similar to the one found in the binary FeSe superconductor, however, the Fe-Fe bondlength appears to get flexible (k ~ 2.1 eV/Å^{2}) in comparison to the binary FeSe (k ~ 3.5 eV/Å^{2}), an indication of partly relaxed Fe-Fe networks in K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2}. The results suggest glassy nature of the title system, with the superconductivity being similar to the one in the granular materials.

A direct and element-specific measurement of the local Fe spin moment has been provided by analyzing the Fe 3s core level photoemission spectra in the parent and optimally doped CeFeAsO1-xFx (x = 0, 0.11) and Sr(Fe1 xCox)2As2 (x = 0, 0.10) pnictides. The rapid time scales of the photoemission process allowed the detection of large local spin moments fluctuating on a 10-15 s time scale in the paramagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic and superconducting phases, indicative of the occurrence of ubiquitous strong Hund's magnetic correlations. The magnitude of the spin moment is found to vary significantly among different families, 1.3 \muB in CeFeAsO and 2.1 \muB in SrFe2As2. Surprisingly, the spin moment is found to decrease considerably in the optimally doped samples, 0.9 \muB in CeFeAsO0.89F0.11 and 1.3 \muB in Sr(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2. The strong variation of the spin moment against doping and material type indicates that the spin moments and the motion of itinerant electrons are influenced reciprocally in a self-consistent fashion, reflecting the strong competition between the antiferromagnetic super-exchange interaction among the spin moments and the kinetic energy gain of the itinerant electrons in the presence of a strong Hund's coupling. By describing the evolution of the magnetic correlations concomitant with the appearance of superconductivity, these results constitute a fundamental step toward attaining a correct description of the microscopic mechanisms shaping the electronic properties in the pnictides, including magnetism and high temperature superconductivity.

In both Ru 3d3/2 and 3d5/2 core levels we observe a clear suppression of the metallic features, i.e. the screened peaks, implying a sharp transition from itinerant to localized character already at low Mn concentrations. The comparison between soft and hard x-ray photoemission, which provides tunable depth sensitivity, reveals that the degree of localized/metallic character for Ru is different at the surface than in the bulk.

Fe K-edge and Se K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements are used to study FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ electronic structure of chalcogenides. An intense Fe K-edge pre-edge peak due to Fe 1s$\to$3d (and admixed Se/Te $p$ states) is observed, showing substantial change with the Te substitution and X-ray polarization. The main white line peak in the Se K-edge XANES due to Se 1s $\to$ 4p transition appear similar to the one expected for Se$^{2-}$ systems and changes with the Te substitution. Polarization dependence reveals that unoccupied Se orbitals near the Fermi level have predominant $p_{x,y}$ character. The results provide key information on the hybridization of Fe $3d$ and chalcogen $p$ states in the Fe-based chalcogenide superconductors.

We assess the capabilities of magnetic Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the O $K$ edge in undoped cuprates by taking La_{2}CuO_{4} as a benchmark case, based on a series of RIXS measurements that we present here. By combining the experimental results with basic theory we point out the fingerprints of bimagnon in the O $K$ edge RIXS spectra. These are a dominant peak around 450 meV, the almost complete absence of dispersion both with $π$ and $σ$ polarization and the almost constant intensity vs. the transferred momentum with $σ$ polarization. This behavior is quite different from Cu $L_3$ edge RIXS giving a strongly dispersing bimagnon tending to zero at the center of the Brillouin zone. This is clearly shown by RIXS measurements at the Cu $L_3$ edge that we present. The Cu $L_3$ bimagnon spectra and those at Cu $K$ edge - both from the literature and from our data - however, have the same shape. These similarities and differences are understood in terms of different sampling of the bimagnon continuum. This panorama points out the unique possibilities offered by O $K$ RIXS in the study of magnetic excitations in cuprates near the center of the BZ.

Local structure of FeSe(1-x)Te(x) has been studied by extended x-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements as a function of temperature. Combination of Se and Fe K edge EXAFS has permitted to quantify the local interatomic distances and their mean-square relative displacements. The Fe-Se and Fe-Te bond lengths in the ternary system are found to be very different from the average crystallographic Fe-Se/Te distance, and almost identical to the Fe-Se and Fe-Te distances for the binary FeSe and FeTe systems, indicating distinct site occupation by the Se and Te atoms. The results provide a clear evidence of local inhomogeneities and coexisting electronic components in the FeSe1-xTex, characterized by different local structural configurations, with direct implication on the fundamental electronic structure of these superconductors.

We report an extensive study on the intrinsic bulk electronic structure of the high-temperature superconductor CeFeAsO0.89F0.11 and its parent compound CeFeAsO by soft and hard x-ray photoemission, x-ray absorption and soft-x-ray emission spectroscopies. The complementary surface/bulk probing depth, and the elemental and chemical sensitivity of these techniques allows resolving the intrinsic electronic structure of each element and correlating it with the local structure, which has been probed by extended-x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The measurements indicate a predominant 4f1 (i.e. Ce3+) initial state configuration for Cerium and an effective valence-band-to-4f charge-transfer screening of the core hole. The spectra also reveal the presence of a small Ce f0 initial state configuration, which we assign to the occurrence of an intermediate valence state. The data reveal a reasonably good agreement with the partial density of states as obtained in standard density functional calculations over a large energy range. Implications for the electronic structure of these materials are discussed.

Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calculations. The results obtained demonstrate the high potential of NIXS as a bulk-sensitive technique for the characterization of the electronic properties of actinide materials.

Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the fluorescence mode has permitted to compare systematically the inter-atomic distances and their mean square relative displacements (MSRD). We find that the Fe-As bond length and the corresponding MSRD hardly show any change, suggesting the strongly covalent nature of this bond, while the Fe-Fe and Fe-RE bond lengths decrease with decreasing rare earth size. The results provide important information on the atomic correlations that could have direct implication on the superconductivity and magnetism of REOFeAs system, with the chemical pressure being a key ingredient.

We report the boron isotope effect on the E2g phonon mode by micro-Raman spectroscopy on the ternary Mg1-xAlxB2 system, synthesized with pure isotopes 10B and 11B. The isotope coefficient on the phonon frequency is near 0.5 in the full range decreasing near x = 0. The intraband electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, for the electrons in the sigma band, has been extracted from the E2g line-width and frequency softening. Tuning the Fermi energy near the electronic topological transition (ETT), where the sigma Fermi surface changes from 2D to 3D topology the E2g mode, shows the known Kohn anomaly on the 2D side of the ETT and a splitting of the E2g phonon frequency into a hard and soft component from x = 0 to x = 0.28. The results suggest a minor role of the intraband phonon mediated pairing in the control of the high critical temperature in Mg1-xAlxB2. The common physical features of diborides with the novel multigap FeAs-based superconductors and cuprates is discussed.
