Based on the relativistic Hartree-Fock formalism and one of the most advanced Lagrangian PKA1, we investigate the properties of the exotic nucleus 48Si. We found that 48Si may be an atypical nucleus characterized by i) the onset of doubly magicity, ii) its location at the drip line, iii) the presence of a doubly semibubble (central depletion of the neutron and proton density profiles) in the ground state, and iv) the occurrence of pairing reentrance at finite temperature. These phenomenons are not independent from each others. We illustrate for instance that the doubly semibubble reduces the spin-orbit splitting of low-l orbitals and modifies the splitting of relevant pseudospin partners, favoring N = 34 as a new magic number for neutron rich nuclei. Since 48Si is predicted doubly magic, it could have an extra stability which puts it at the drip line. Moreover, 48Si may have interesting excited states which may induce pairing reentrance at finite temperature. While not being new, these phenomenons are found to serendipitously occur together in 48Si, from our theoretical calculation. Theoretical nuclear modelings are known to be poorly predictive in general, and we asset our confidence in the prediction of our modeling on the fact that the predictions of PKA1 in various regions of the nuclear chart have systematically been found correct and more specifically in the region around 48Si, our approach correctly reproduce the known features of neighboring nuclei. Whether our predictions are confirmed or not, 48Si provides a concrete benchmark for the understanding of the nature of nuclear forces.

Using the same set of parameters we describe available experimental data for $^{40,44,48}$Ca and give prediction for $^{50-58}$Ca. The inclusion of the PPC results in the formation of low-energy $1^-$ states. There is an impact of the PPC effect on low-energy $E1$~strength of $^{40,44,48}$Ca. The PPC effect on the electric dipole polarizability is discussed. We predict a strong increase of the summed $E1$~strength below 10MeV, with increasing neutron number from $^{48}$Ca till $^{58}$Ca.

The formation of new shell gaps in intermediate mass neutron-rich nuclei is investigated within the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, and the role of the Lorentz pseudo-vector and tensor interactions is analyzed. Based on the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, we discuss in detail the role played by the different terms of the Lorentz pseudo-vector and tensor interactions in the appearing of the $N=16$, 32 and 34 shell gaps. The nuclei $^{24}$O, $^{48}$Si and $^{52,54}$Ca are predicted with a large shell gap and zero ($^{24}$O, $^{52}$Ca) or almost zero ($^{48}$Si, $^{54}$Ca) pairing gap, making them candidates for new magic numbers in exotic nuclei. We find from our analysis that the Lorentz pseudo-vector and tensor interactions induce very specific evolutions of single-particle energies, which could clearly sign their presence and reveal the need for relativistic approaches with exchange interactions.

Background: The relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) theory has recently been developed and it provides a unified and highly predictive description of both nuclear mean field and pairing correlations. Ground state properties of finite nuclei can accurately be reproduced without neglecting exchange (Fock) contributions. Purpose: Finite-temperature RHFB (FT-RHFB) theory has not yet been developed, leaving yet unknown its predictions for phase transitions and thermal excitations in both stable and weakly bound nuclei. Method: FT-RHFB equations are solved in a Dirac Woods-Saxon (DWS) basis considering two kinds of pairing interactions: finite or zero range. Such a model is appropriate for describing stable as well as loosely bound nuclei since the basis states have correct asymptotic behaviour for large spatial distributions. Results: Systematic FT-RH(F)B calculations are performed for several semi-magic isotopic/isotonic chains comparing the predictions of a large number of Lagrangians, among which are PKA1, PKO1 and DD-ME2. It is found that the critical temperature for a pairing transition generally follows the rule $T_c = 0.60Δ(0)$ for a finite-range pairing force and $T_c = 0.57Δ(0)$ for a contact pairing force, where $Δ(0)$ is the pairing gap at zero temperature. Two types of pairing persistence are analysed: type I pairing persistence occurs in closed subshell nuclei while type II pairing persistence can occur in loosely bound nuclei strongly coupled to the continuum states. Conclusions: This first FT-RHFB calculation shows very interesting features of the pairing correlations at finite temperature and in finite systems such as pairing re-entrance and pairing persistence.

We analyze the sensitivity of $β$-decay rates in 78 Ni and 100,132 Sn to a correction term in Skyrme energy-density functionals (EDF) which modifies the radial shape of the nucleon effective mass. This correction is added on top of several Skyrme parametrizations which are selected from their effective mass properties and predictions about the stability properties of 132 Sn. The impact of the correction on high-energy collective modes is shown to be moderate. From the comparison of the effects induced by the surface-peaked effective mass in the three doubly magic nuclei, it is found that 132 Sn is largely impacted by the correction, while 78 Ni and 100 Sn are only moderately affected. We conclude that $β$-decay rates in these nuclei can be used as a test of different parts of the nuclear EDF: 78 Ni and 100 Sn are mostly sensitive to the particle-hole interaction through the B(GT) values, while 132 Sn is sensitive to the radial shape of the effective mass. Possible improvements of these different parts could therefore be better constrained in the future.

The effects of the phonon-phonon coupling on the beta-decay rates of neutron-rich nuclei are studied in a microscopic model based on Skyrme-type interactions. The approach uses a finite-rank separable approximation of the Skyrme-type particle-hole (p-h) residual interaction. Very large two-quasiparticle spaces can thus be treated. A redistribution of the Gamow-Teller (G-T) strength is found due to the tensor correlations and the 2p-2h fragmentation of G-T states. As a result, the beta-decay half-lives are decreased significantly. Using the Skyrme interaction SGII together with a volume-type pairing interaction we illustrate this reduction effect by comparing with available experimental data for the Ni isotopes and neutron-rich N=50 isotones. We give predictions for 76Fe and 80Ni in comparison with the case of the doubly-magic nucleus 78Ni which is an important waiting point in the r-process.

The energy density functional (EDF) method is very widely used in nuclear physics, and among the various existing functionals those based on the relativistic Hartree (RH) approximation are very popular because the exchange contributions (Fock terms) are numerically rather onerous to calculate. Although it is possible to somehow 'mock up' the effects of meson-induced exchange terms by adjusting the meson-nucleon couplings, the lack of Coulomb exchange contributions hampers the accuracy of predictions. In this note, we show that the Coulomb exchange effects can be easily included with a good accuracy in a perturbative approach. Therefore, it would be desirable for future relativistic EDF models to incorporate Coulomb exchange effects, at least to some order of perturbation.

An increase is obtained in the neutron spin-orbit splittings of $p$ and $f$ states due to the effect of the tensor force which also makes $^{54}$Ca a magic nucleus candidate. QRPA calculations on top of HF+BCS are performed to investigate the first $J^π$=$2^{+}$ states of the calcium isotopic chain. A good agreement for excitation energies is obtained when we include the tensor force in the mean-field part of the calculations. The first $2^{+}$ states indicate a subshell closure for both $^{52}$Ca and $^{54}$Ca nuclei. We confirm that the tensor part of the interaction is quite essential in explaining the neutron subshell closure in $^{52}$Ca and $^{54}$Ca nuclei.

Zero-range effective interactions are commonly used in nuclear physics to describe a many-body system in the mean-field framework. If they are employed in beyond- mean-field models, an artificial ultraviolet divergence is generated by the zero-range of the interaction. We analyze this problem in symmetric nuclear matter with the t0-t3 Skyrme model. In this case, the second-order energy correction diverges linearly with the momentum cutoff. After that, we extend the work to the case of nuclear matter with the full Skyrme interaction. A strong divergence related to the velocity-dependent terms of the interaction is obtained. Moreover, a global fit can be simultaneously performed for both symmetric and nuclear matter with different neutron-to-proton ratios. These results pave the way for applications to finite nuclei in the framework of beyond mean-field theories.

If they are used within a beyond-mean-field framework, contributions to the total energy that display an ultraviolet divergence are found. We propose a general strategy to regularize this divergence and we illustrate it in the case of the second-order corrections to the equation of state (EOF) of uniform symmetric matter. By setting a momentum cutoff $Λ$, we show that for every (physically meaningful) value of $Λ$ it is possible to determine a new interaction such that the EOS with the second-order corrections reproduces the empirical EOS, with a fit of the same quality as that obtained at the mean-field level.

Perturbation theory is used systematically to investigate the symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian and their breaking in atomic nuclei. Using the perturbation corrections to the single-particle energies and wave functions, the link between the single-particle states in realistic nuclei and their counterparts in the symmetry limits is discussed. It is shown that the limit of S-V=const and relativistic harmonic oscillator (RHO) potentials can be connected to the actual Dirac Hamiltonian by the perturbation method, while the limit of S+V=const cannot, where S and V are the scalar and vector potentials, respectively. This indicates that the realistic system can be treated as a perturbation of spin-symmetric Hamiltonians, and the energy splitting of the pseudospin doublets can be regarded as a result of small perturbation around the Hamiltonian with RHO potentials, where the pseudospin doublets are quasidegenerate.

One of the open problems in nuclear structure is how to predict properties of finite nuclei from the knowledge of a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction of the meson-exchange type. We point out that a promising starting point consists in Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) calculations us- ing realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions like the Bonn potentials, which are able to reproduce satisfactorily the properties of symmetric nuclear matter without the need for 3-body forces, as is necessary in non-relativistic BHF calculations. However, the DBHF formalism is still too com- plicated to be used directly for finite nuclei. We argue that a possible route is to define effective Lagrangians with density-dependent nucleon-meson coupling vertices, which can be used in the Relativistic Hartree (or Relativistic Mean Field (RMF)) or preferrably in the Relativistic Hartree- Fock (RHF) approach. The density-dependence is matched to the nuclear matter DBHF results. We review the present status of nuclear matter DBHF calculations and discuss the various schemes to construct the self-energy, which lead to differences in the predictions. We also discuss how effective Lagrangians have been constructed and are used in actual calculations. We point out that completely consistent calculations in this scheme still have to be performed.

Taking the nucleus $^{16}$O as an example, the spin symmetry in the negative energy spectrum is found to be a good approximation and the dominant components of the Dirac wave functions for the spin doublets are nearly identical. In comparison with the relativistic Hartree approximation where the origin of spin symmetry lies in the equality of the scalar and vector potentials, in DDRHF the cancellation between the Hartree and Fock terms is responsible for the better spin symmetry properties and determines the subtle spin-orbit splitting. These conclusions hold even in the case when significant deviations from the G-parity values of the meson-antinucleon couplings occur.

The Fock terms, especially the $ρ$-tensor couplings, not only play significant role in the PSS restoration but also present substantial contributions to the T=0 {channel}, from which is well demonstrated the necessity of Fock terms.

The two recent density-dependent versions of the finite-range M3Y interaction (CDM3Y$n$ and M3Y-P$n$) have been probed against the bulk properties of asymmetric nuclear matter (NM) in the nonrelativistic Hartree Fock (HF) formalism. The same HF study has also been done with the famous Skyrme (SLy4) and Gogny (D1S and D1N) interactions which were well tested in the nuclear structure calculations. Our HF results are compared with those given by other many-body calculations like the Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock approach or ab-initio variational calculation using free nucleon-nucleon interaction, and by both the nonrelativistic and relativistic mean-field studies using different model parameters. Although the two considered density-dependent versions of the M3Y interaction were proven to be quite realistic in the nuclear structure or reaction studies, they give two distinct behaviors of the NM symmetry energy at high densities, like the Asy-soft and Asy-stiff scenarios found earlier with other mean-field interactions. As a consequence, we obtain two different behaviors of the proton fraction in the $β$-equilibrium which in turn can imply two drastically different mechanisms for the neutron star cooling. While some preference of the Asy-stiff scenario was found based on predictions of the latest microscopic many-body calculations or empirical NM pressure and isospin diffusion data deduced from heavy-ion collisions, a consistent mean-field description of nuclear structure database is more often given by some Asy-soft type interaction like the Gogny or M3Y-P$n$ ones. Such a dilemma poses an interesting challenge to the modern mean-field approaches.

Self-consistent random phase approximation (RPA) approaches in the relativistic framework are applied to calculate the isospin symmetry-breaking corrections $δ_c$ for the $0^+\to0^+$ superallowed transitions. It is found that the corrections $δ_c$ are sensitive to the proper treatments of the Coulomb mean field, but not so much to specific effective interactions. With these corrections $δ_c$, the nucleus-independent $\mathcal{F}t$ values are obtained in combination with the experimental $ft$ values in the most recent survey and the improved radiative corrections. It is found that the constancy of the $\mathcal{F}t$ values is satisfied for all effective interactions employed. Furthermore, the element $V_{ud}$ and unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix are discussed.

Relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) theory with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings is presented. The integro-differential RHFB equations are solved by expanding the different components of the quasi-particle spinors in the complete set of eigen-solutions of the Dirac equations with Woods-Saxon potentials. Using the finite-range Gogny force D1S as an effective interaction in the pairing channel, systematic RHFB calculations are performed for Sn isotopes and N=82 isotones. It is demonstrated that an appropriate description of both mean field and pairing effects can be obtained within RHFB theory with finite range Gogny pairing forces. Better systematics are also found in the regions from the stable to the neutron-rich side with the inclusion of Fock terms, especially in the presence of $ρ$-tensor couplings.

We propose $^{34}$Si and $^{22}$O as possible candidates for proton and neutron bubble nuclei, respectively. In the case of $^{22}$O, we observe a significant model dependence, thereby calling into question the bubble structure of $^{22}$O. In contrast, an overall agreement among the models is obtained for $^{34}$Si. Indeed, all models predict a central proton density depletion of about 40%. This result provides strong evidence in favor of a proton bubble in $^{34}$Si.

Microscopic structure of the low-lying isovector dipole excitation mode in neutron-rich $^{26,28,30}$Ne is investigated by performing deformed quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation (QRPA) calculations. The particle-hole residual interaction is derived from a Skyrme force through a Landau-Migdal approximation. We have obtained the low-lying resonance in $^{26}$Ne at around 8.5 MeV. It is found that the isovector dipole strength at $E_{x}<10$ MeV exhausts about 6.0% of the classical Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn dipole sum rule. This excitation mode is composed of several QRPA eigenmodes, one is generated by a $ν(2s^{-1}_{1/2} 2p_{3/2})$ transition dominantly, and the other mostly by a $ν(2s^{-1}_{1/2} 2p_{1/2})$ transition. The neutron excitations take place outside of the nuclear surface reflecting the spatially extended structure of the $2s_{1/2}$ wave function. In $^{30}$Ne, the deformation splitting of the giant resonance is large, and the low-lying resonance is overlapping with the giant resonance.

A new effective interaction PKA1 with $ρ$-tensor couplings for the density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (DDRHF) theory is presented. It is obtained by fitting selected empirical ground state and shell structure properties. It provides satisfactory descriptions of nuclear matter and the ground state properties of finite nuclei at the same quantitative level as recent DDRHF and RMF models. Significant improvement on the single-particle spectra is also found due to the inclusion of $ρ$-tensor couplings. As a result, PKA1 cures a common disease of the existing DDRHF and RMF Lagrangians, namely the artificial shells at 58 and 92, and recovers the realistic sub-shell closure at 64. Moreover, the proper spin-orbit splittings and well-conserved pseudo-spin symmetry are obtained with the new effective interaction PKA1. Due to the extra binding introduced by the $ρ$-tensor correlations, the balance between the nuclear attractions and the repulsions is changed and this constitutes the physical reason for the improvement of the nuclear shell structure.

We analyze the evolution with increasing isospin asymmetry of the proton single-particle states 2s1/2 and 1d3/2 in Ca isotopes, using non-relativistic and relativistic mean field approaches. Both models give similar trends and it is shown that this evolution is sensitive to the neutron shell structure, the two states becoming more or less close depending on the neutron orbitals which are filled. In the regions where the states get closer some parametrizations predict an inversion between them. This inversion occurs near $^{48}$Ca as well as very far from stability where the two states systematically cross each other if the drip line predicted in the model is located far enough. We study in detail the modification of the two single-particle energies by using the equivalent potential in the Schroedinger-like Skyrme-Hartree-Fock equations. The role played by central, kinetic and spin-orbit contributions is discussed. We finally show that the effect of a tensor component in the effective interaction considerably favors the inversion of the two proton states in $^{48}$Ca.

Finite temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations are performed in Sn isotopes using Skyrme and zero-range, density-dependent pairing interactions. For both stable and very neutron-rich nuclei the critical temperature at which pairing correlations vanish is independent of the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction. The value of the critical temperature follows approximatively the empirical rule T$_c$ $\simeq$ 0.5 $Δ_{T=0}$ for all the calculated isotopes, showing that the critical temperature could be deduced from the pairing gap at zero temperature. On the other hand, the pairing gap at temperatures just below T$_c$ is strongly sensitive to the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction.

A kink around $Z = 58$ for the N=82 isotones is found as an effect resulting from pion correlations. It is shown that the inclusion of $π$-coupling plays a central role to provide realistic isospin dependence of the energy differences. In particular, the tensor part of the $π$-coupling has an important effect on the characteristic isospin dependence observed in recent experiments.

The criteria for determining the model parameters are the reproduction of the binding energies in a number of selected nuclei, and the bulk properties of nuclear matter (saturation point, compression modulus, symmetry energy). An excellent description of nuclear binding energies and radii is achieved for a range of nuclei encompassing light and heavy systems. The predictions of the present approach compare favorably with those of existing relativistic mean field models, with the advantage of incorporating the effects of pion-nucleon coupling.

The appearance of such structures depends sensitively on the effective interaction adopted. This is illustrated by comparing the predictions of SLy4 and SkI4 in the Ca and Zr isotopic chains. The former force gives no halo effect, the latter predicts a neutron halo in the Zr chain with A>122 due to the weakly bound orbitals 3p1/2 and 3p3/2. The structure of the halo is analyzed in terms of the occupation probabilities of these orbitals and their partial contributions to the neutron density. The anti-halo effect in Ni and Zr isotopes is also discussed by comparing the occupation probabilities of Hartree-Fock neutron single-particle states near the Fermi energy with the corresponding HFB quasiparticle states.

The question of nuclear response functions in a homogeneous medium is examined. A general method for calculating response functions in the random phase approximation (RPA) with exchange is presented. The method is applicable for finite-range nuclear interactions. Examples are shown in the case of symmetric nuclear matter described by a Gogny interaction. It is found that the convergence of the r…

It is found that the convergence of the results with respect to the multipole truncation is quite fast. Various approximation schemes such as the Landau approximation, or the Landau approximation for the exchange terms only, are discussed in comparison with the exact results.

We investigate the nuclear collective excitations of Wigner-Seitz cells containing nuclear clusters immersed in a gas of neutrons. This baryonic non-uniform system is specific to the structure of inner crust matter of neutron stars. The collective excitations are studied in the framework of a spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov + Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation, formulated in coordinate representation. The calculations are done for two representative Wigner-Seitz cells with baryonic density equal to 0.02 fm$^{-3}$ and 0.08 fm$^{-3}$. It is shown that the excitations with low multipolarities are concentrated almost entirely in one strongly collective mode which exhausts a very large fraction of the energy-weighted sum rule. Since these collective modes are located at very low energies compared to the giant resonances in standard nuclei, they may affect significantly the specific heat of baryonic inner crust matter of neutron stars.

The convergence properties of a multiparticle-multihole (mp-mh) configuration mixing approach whose purpose is to describe ground state correlations in nuclei without particle number and Pauli violations is investigated in the case of an exactly solvable pairing hamiltonian. Two different truncation schemes are tested by looking at quantities as correlation energies and single-particle occupation probabilities. Results show that pairing correlations present in usual superfluid nuclei can be accurately described using up to 6 particle-6 hole excitations, a convergence fast enought for envisaging extensions to fully microscopic calculations.

Abstract:
The nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ is deduced from measurements of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) in medium-heavy nuclei, and the resulting value turns out to be model dependent. Since the considered nuclei have neutron excess, it has been suggested that the model dependence is due to the different behaviour of the symmetry energy in different models. To clarify this issue,…

To clarify this issue, we make a systematic and careful analysis based on new Skyrme forces which span a wide range of values for $K_\infty$, for the value of the symmetry energy at saturation and for its density dependence. By calculating, in a fully self-consistent fashion, the ISGMR centroid energy in $^{208}$Pb we reach, for the first time within the non-relativistic framework, three important conclusions: (i) the monopole energy, and consequently the deduced value of $K_\infty$, depend on a well defined parameter related to the shape of the symmetry energy curve and called $K_{sym}$; (ii) Skyrme forces of the type of SLy4 predict $K_\infty$ around 230 MeV, in agreement with the Gogny force (previous estimates using Skyrme interactions having been plagued by lack of full self-consistency); (iii) it is possible to build forces which predict $K_\infty$ around 250 MeV, although part of this increase is due to our poor knowledge of the density dependence and effective mass.

The approach is a development of a finite rank separable approximation for the quasiparticle RPA calculations proposed in our previous work. The influence of the phonon-phonon coupling on energies and transition probabilities for the low-lying quadrupole and octupole states in the neutron-rich Sn isotopes is studied.
