We study the available data on exclusive leptonic and semileptonic $c\to s\ell^+ν$ decays within the Standard Model and beyond. Our analysis accounts for theory correlations between the relevant hadronic matrix elements through application of dispersive bounds. We find that, within a global analysis, the dispersive bounds are generally well respected and only mildly affect the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $|V_{cs}|$. Assuming Standard Model dynamics, we obtain $$
|V_{cs}| = 0.957 \pm 0.003\,, $$ which is compatible with the HFLAV/PDG reference value $|V_{cs}| = 0.975 \pm 0.006$ at the $2.7\,σ$ level. Our findings lead to significant deficits in the second-row and second-column unitarity relations of the CKM matrix. Allowing for beyond the SM contributions in the Weak Effective Theory, we find very strong constraints on potential (pseudo)scalar and tensor effects. However, the data still permits sizeable CP-violating right-handed currents.

The theoretical description and data for inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays have reached incredible precision. This motivated us to re-animate the discussion of possible Quark-Hadron Duality violations. There seems that there is currently no evidence of a failure of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) used to compute observables for these decays. However, we might arrive at a point where an asymptotic behaviour of the HQE would limit a further increase of precision. We discuss this possibility and suggest a simple model, which can be used to study the effects of higher orders in the $1/m_b$ expansion and possible quark-hadron duality violations. We devise observables sensitive only to such higher-order effects to test the behaviour of the HQE. Using these observables we obtain a first estimate of possible quark-hadron duality violations using the measured $q^2$ moments.

Due to its helicity suppression in the Standard Model, this decay is particularly sensitive to new (pseudo)-scalar contributions. We present a new strategy for detecting CP-violating New Physics contributions of this kind, exploiting two observables: $\adg$, which is accessible due to the sizeable decay width difference of the $B_s$ system, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetry $\smumu$. We also utilize information from semileptonic $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. Using the currently available experimental information, we find remarkably constrained regions in the $\adg$--$\smumu$ plane that serve as promising targets for future measurements.

We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = μ,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

At high $q^2$ we provide the branching ratio and the ratio of the $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ rate with respect to the inclusive $\bar B \to X_u \ell \barν$ rate with the same phase-space cut. We compare our predictions to an extraction of the experimental rate through a sum-over-exclusive method using branching ratios of the exclusive $\bar B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ modes measured at LHCb. Our analysis does not support a recent claim about a deficit in the inclusive branching ratio in the high-$q^2$ region. Finally, we present current model-independent bounds on new physics and emphasize the potential of complementary analyses of $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle II and the LHC.

Semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays can be described, as their $B^{0}$ counterpart, using the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), with the only difference between the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons being the $SU(3)_F$ breaking effects that change the numerical values of the non-perturbative HQE parameters. We extract the HQE parameters for the $B_{s}^{0}$ decays from our estimates of the moments, showing the potential of the proposed method. We calculate the terms of $1/m_b^5$ and derive a ``trace formula'' which allows for the computation of the decay rate and kinematic moments of the spectrum up to this order in the HQE. We focus specifically on the reparametrization invariant (RPI) dilepton invariant mass $q^2$ moments of the spectrum, which depend on a reduced set of HQE parameters. At this order, ``intrinsic charm'' (IC) contributions proportional to $1/(m_b^3m_c^2)$ enter, which are numerically expected to be sizeable. Using the ``lowest-lying state saturation ansatz'' (LLSA), we estimate the size of these contributions. Within this approximation, we observe a partial cancellation between the IC and the ``genuine'' $1/m_b^5$ contributions, resulting in a small overall contribution.

We update the full set of $\bar{B}_s\rightarrow K$ form factors using light-cone sum rules with an on-shell kaon. Our approach determines the relevant sum rule parameters -- the duality thresholds -- from a Bayesian fit for the first time. Using a modified version of the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed parametrisation, we combine our sum rule results at low momentum transfer $q^2$ with more precise lattice QCD results at large $q^2$. We obtain a consistent description of the form factors in the full $q^2$ range. Applying these results to a recent LHCb measurement of branching ratios for the decays $B_s^0 \to \lbrace K^-, D_s^-\rbrace μ^+ν_μ$, we determine the ratio of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements $$ \notag \left|\frac{V_{ub}}{V_{cb}}\right|_{q^2<7\; \textrm{GeV}^2} = 0.0681\pm 0.0040 \quad \text{and} \quad \left|\frac{V_{ub}}{V_{cb}}\right|_{q^2>7 \;\textrm{GeV}^2} = 0.0801\pm 0.0047 \ , $$ which are mutually compatible at the $1.9σ$ level. We further comment on the sensitivity to Beyond the Standard Model effects through measurements of the shape of $B_s^0 \to K^- μ^+ν_μ$ decays, in light of recent limits on such effects from other exclusive $b\to u\ellν$ processes.

Light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) frequently arise in factorization theorems involving light and heavy mesons. The QCD LCDA for heavy mesons includes short-distance physics at energy scales of the heavy-quark mass. In this paper we achieve the separation of this perturbative scale from the purely hadronic effects by matching the QCD LCDA to the convolution of a perturbative function with the universal, quark-mass independent LCDA defined in heavy-quark effective theory. This factorization allows to resum potentially large logarithms between $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ and $m_Q$ as well as between $m_Q$ and the scale $Q$ of the hard process in the production of boosted heavy mesons at colliders. As an application we derive new theoretical predictions for the branching ratio of the decay $W^\pm \to B^\pm γ$. Furthermore, we provide phenomenological models for the QCD LCDAs of both the $\bar{B}$ and $D$ mesons expressed as expansions in Gegenbauer polynomials.

These results complement the sum rules for the $P$-wave $B\to K π$ form factors obtained earlier. We then use the new sum rules to estimate the $S$-wave contributions to $B\to K π\ell\ell$ decays as a function of the $Kπ$ invariant mass. We pay particular attention to the fact that the $S$-wave $Kπ$ spectrum cannot be modelled by a sum of Breit-Wigner resonances, and employ a more consistent dispersive coupled-channel approach. We compare our predictions for branching ratios and angular observables with LHCb measurements in two different kinematic regions, around $K^*(892)$ and $K^*_0(1430)$. We observe an overall compatibility and discuss possible improvements of our model to obtain a better description of the $B\to Kπ$ form factors over a large kinematic range.

Intriguing results for tests of the universality of electrons and muons through measurements of rates of $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ and similar decays have been in the spotlight for years. The LHCb collaboration has recently reported new results which are in agreement with Lepton Flavour Universality, while the individual decay rates are found below their Standard Model predictions. In view of this new situation, we explore how much space is left for a violation of electron-muon universality. Considering new sources of CP violation and taking the new LHCb measurements into account, we show that significant differences between the short-distance coefficients for electronic and muonic final states are actually allowed by the current data. These patterns can be revealed through CP asymmetries in neutral and charged $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays. We obtain correlations between these observables and map them to the short-distance coefficients. This results in regions in New Physics parameter space with large differences between CP asymmetries of the decays with final-state electrons and muons, thereby leaving a lot of room for possible surprises in the future high-precision era.

Various short-distance mass schemes have been invented to minimize the uncertainties induced by the quark mass, which needs to be extracted from other, independent observables. The $B \to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ system is particularly interesting to explore physics beyond the Standard Model. Such effects could provide new sources of CP violation, thereby giving rise to Wilson coefficients which could not only be real, as assumed in most analyses, but also be complex. We propose a new strategy to extract the complex $C_{9 μ}$, $C_{10 μ}$ from the data, utilising the complementarity of direct CP violation in $B^+\to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ and mixing-induced CP violation arising - in addition to direct CP violation - in $B^0_d \to K_{S} μ^+μ^-$, as well as the differential rate in appropriate $q^2$ bins. The long-distance effects, which play a key role to generate the direct CP asymmetries, cannot be reliably calculated due to their non-perturbative nature. In order to describe them, we apply a model by the LHCb Collaboration employing experimental data. Assuming specific scenarios, we demonstrate the fingerprinting of CP-violating New Physics and the distinction between ambiguities in the model of the long-distance contributions. Finally, New Physics could couple differently to muons and electrons, as probed through the lepton flavour universality ratio $R_K$. We discuss these effects in the presence of CP violation and present a new way to measure the direct CP asymmetries of the $B \to K e^+ e^-$ channels.

We show that these puzzling differences can be accommodated through sizeable penguin annihilation and exchange topologies in the Standard Model, and constrain them. Utilising the $U$-spin symmetry, we extract the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle from the CP asymmetries in the $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$, $B^0_d\to π^-π^+$ system alone, finding $γ=(65^{+11}_{-7})^\circ$, in perfect agreement with the determination from tree-level $B\to DK$ decays. The $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase $φ_s$ can be extracted from CP violation measurements in $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ in a clean way. We present a new strategy and extract $φ_s=-(3.6\pm 5.4)^\circ$. This result is in agreement with the determination from $B^0_s\to J/ψφ$ decays. New CP-violating contributions would influence these determinations differently. In addition, we provide numerical solutions for the soft functions and analytical solutions to all orders in the strong and to first order in the electromagnetic coupling. For the inverse (and inverse-logarithmic) moments, we obtain an all-order solution in both couplings. We further provide numerical estimates for QED corrections to the inverse moments.

EOS is an open-source software for a variety of computational tasks in flavor physics. Its use cases include theory predictions within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, Bayesian inference of theory parameters from experimental and theoretical likelihoods, and simulation of pseudo events for a number of signal processes. EOS ensures high-performance computations through a C++ back-end and ease of usability through a Python front-end. To achieve this flexibility, EOS enables the user to select from a variety of implementations of the relevant decay processes and hadronic matrix elements at run time. In this article, we describe the general structure of the software framework and provide basic examples. Further details and in-depth interactive examples are provided as part of the EOS online documentation.

We discuss the generalization of the leading-twist light-cone distribution amplitude for light mesons including QED effects. This generalization was introduced to describe virtual collinear photon exchanges above the strong-interaction scale $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ in the factorization of QED effects in non-leptonic $B$-meson decays. In this paper we study the renormalization group evolution of this non-perturbative function. For charged mesons, in particular, this exhibits qualitative differences with respect to the well-known scale evolution in QCD only, especially regarding the endpoint-behaviour. We analytically solve the evolution equation to first order in the electromagnetic coupling $α_{\rm em}$, which resums large logarithms in QCD on top of a fixed-order expansion in $α_{\rm em}$. We further provide numerical estimates for QED corrections to Gegenbauer coefficients as well as inverse moments relevant to (QED-generalized) factorization theorems for hard exclusive processes.

The QCD$\times$QED factorization is studied for two-body non-leptonic and semi-leptonic $B$ decays with heavy-light final states. These non-leptonic decays, like $\bar{B}^0_{(s)}\to D^+_{(s)} π^-$ and $\bar{B}_d^0 \to D^+ K^-$, are among the theoretically cleanest non-leptonic decays as penguin loops do not contribute and colour-suppressed tree amplitudes are suppressed in the heavy-quark limit or even completely absent. Advancing the theoretical calculations of such decays requires therefore also a careful analysis of QED effects. Including QED effects does not alter the general structure of factorization which is analogous for both semi-leptonic and non-leptonic decays. For the latter, we express our result as a correction of the tree amplitude coefficient $a_1$. At the amplitude level, we find QED effects at the sub-percent level, which is of the same order as the QCD uncertainty. We discuss the phenomenological implications of adding QED effects in light of discrepancies observed between theory and experimental data, for ratios of non-leptonic over semi-leptonic decay rates. At the level of the rate, ultrasoft photon effects can produce a correction up to a few percent, requiring a careful treatment of such effects in the experimental analyses.

The determination of the CKM element $V_{cb}$ from inclusive semileptonic $b\to c \ell \barν$ decays has reached a high precision thanks to a combination of theoretical and experimental efforts. Aiming towards even higher precision, we discuss two processes that contaminate the inclusive $V_{cb}$ determination; the $b\to u$ background and the contribution of the tauonic mode: $b\to c(τ\to μν\barν)\barν$. Both of these contributions are dealt with at the experimental side, using Monte-Carlo methods and momentum cuts. However, these contributions can be calculated with high precision within the Heavy-Quark Expansion. In this note, we calculate the theoretical predictions for these two processes. The $b\to u$ results are compared with generator-level Monte-Carlo results used at Belle and Belle II. We have good agreement between theory and Monte-Carlo for lepton energy moments, but less for hadronic mass moments. Based on our results the uncertainties due to these backgrounds processes can basically be eliminated by properly including them into the analyses.

Motivated by the first search for the rare charged-current $B$ decay to four leptons, $\ell \barν_\ell \ell^{(\prime)} \bar{\ell}^{(\prime)}$, we calculate the decay amplitude with factorization methods. We obtain the $B\to γ^*$ form factors, which depend on the invariant masses of the two lepton pairs, at leading power in an expansion in $Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_b$ to next-to-leading order in $α_s$, and at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^0)$ at next-to-leading power. Our calculations predict branching fractions of a few times $10^{-8}$ in the $\ell^{(\prime)} \bar{\ell}^{(\prime)}$ mass-squared bin up to $q^2=1~\text{GeV}^2$ with $n_+q>3~$GeV. The branching fraction rapidly drops with increasing $q^2$. An important further motivation for this investigation has been to explore the sensitivity of the decay rate to the inverse moment $λ_B$ of the leading-twist $B$ meson light-cone distribution amplitude. We find that in the small-$q^2$ bin, the sensitivity to $λ_B$ is almost comparable to $B^- \rightarrow \ell^- \barν_\ellγ$ when $λ_B$ is small, but with an added uncertainty from the light-meson intermediate resonance contribution. The sensitivity degrades with larger $q^2$.

We show that the QCD factorization approach for $B$-meson decays to charmless hadronic two-body final states can be extended to include electromagnetic corrections. The presence of electrically charged final-state particles complicates the framework. Nevertheless, the factorization formula takes the same form as in QCD alone, with appropriate generalizations of the definitions of light-cone distribution amplitudes and form factors to include QED effects. More precisely, we factorize QED effects above the strong interaction scale $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ for the non-radiative matrix elements $\langle M_1 M_2|Q_i|\bar{B}\rangle$ of the current-current operators from the effective weak interactions. The rates of the branching fractions for the infrared-finite observables $\bar B\to M_1 M_2(γ)$ with photons of maximal energy $ΔE\llΛ_{\rm QCD}$ is then obtained by multiplying with the soft-photon exponentiation factors. We provide first estimates for the various electromagnetic corrections, and in particular quantify their impact on the $πK$ ratios and sum rules that are often used as diagnostics of New Physics.

We consider the time-dependent analysis of $B_d\to K_S\ell\ell$ taking into account the time-evolution of the $B_d$ meson and its mixing into $\bar{B}_d$. We discuss the angular conventions required to define the angular observables in a transparent way with respect to CP conjugation. The inclusion of time evolution allows us to identify six new observables, out of which three could be accessed from a time-dependent tagged analysis. We also show that these observables could be obtained by time-integrated measurements in a hadronic environment if flavour tagging is available. We provide simple and precise predictions for these observables in the SM and in NP models with real contributions to SM and chirally flipped operators, which are independent of form factors and charm-loop contributions. As such, these observables provide robust and powerful cross-checks of the New Physics scenarios currently favoured by global fits to $b\to s\ell\ell$ data. In addition, we discuss the sensitivity of these observables with respect to NP scenarios involving scalar and tensor operators, or CP-violating phases. We illustrate how these new observables can provide a benchmark to discriminate among the various NP scenarios in $b\to sμμ$. We discuss the extension of these results for $B_s$ decays into $f_0$, $η$ or $η'$.

However, the exploration of the corresponding three-body case has only started recently, in part motivated by new data. We consider here the simplest non-leptonic three-body $B$ decays from the point of view of factorization, namely heavy-to-heavy transitions. We provide a careful derivation of the SCET/QCDF factorized amplitudes to NNLO in $α_s$, and discuss the numerical impact of NLO and NNLO corrections. We then study the narrow-width limit, showing that the three-body amplitude reproduces analytically the known quasi-two-body decay amplitudes, and compute finite-width corrections. Finally, we discuss certain observables that are sensitive to perturbative NLO and NNLO corrections and to higher Gegenbauer moments of the dimeson LCDAs. This is the first study of non-leptonic three-body $B$ decays to NNLO in QCD.

Key to understanding this phenomenon are nonleptonic $B$ decays, especially multibody decays which exhibit large CP asymmetries in various regions of phase space. A full QCD-based theoretical description of these decays is still missing, requiring the use of models to fit the data. In this paper, we suggest a model ansatz which reflects the underlying physics and the known mechanism of CP violation via the CKM matrix. In addition, since CP violation is driven by the interference between amplitudes with and without valence charm quarks, we argue that the opening of the open-charm threshold may play an important role in generating CP violation in the high invariant mass region. We present a natural extension of the isobar model to incorporate these effects. We suggest an analysis of nonleptonic three-body $B$ decay data including this extension, which would be interesting as it may give new hints to the sources of CP violation both at low and high invariant mass.

Nevertheless, to make optimal use of the plethora of data already available and coming in the near future, a better understanding of HQE for charm decays is crucial. This paper discusses in detail how the HQE for charm decays is set up, what is the role of four-quark (weak annihilation) operators and how this compares to the well understood bottom decays. Subtleties concerning radiative corrections and the charm mass scheme are briefly discussed. An experimental study of the relevant HQE hadronic matrix elements will then show if the HQE expansion for charm converges well enough. Besides serving as an important cross check for inclusive $B$ decays, in the end, this study might open the road for inclusive $|V_{cs}|$ and $|V_{cd}|$ extractions.

Due to the complementarity to their exclusive counterparts, they might shed light on the anomalies currently seen in exclusive $b \to s$ transitions. Distinguishing new-physics effects from the Standard Model requires precise predictions and necessitates the control of long distance effects. The determination of $V_{cb}$ relies on the Heavy-Quark Expansion and the extraction of the non-perturbative matrix elements from inclusive $b\to c$ decays. The proliferation of these matrix elements complicates their extraction at $1/m_b^4$ and higher, thereby limiting the $V_{cb}$ extraction. Reparametrization invariance links different operators in the Heavy-Quark expansion thus reducing the number of independent operators at $1/m_b^4$ to eight for the total rate. We show that this reduction also holds for spectral moments as long as they are defined by reparametrization invariant weight-functions. This is valid in particular for the leptonic invariant mass spectrum ($q^2$), i.e. the differential rate and its moments. Currently, $V_{cb}$ is determined by fitting the energy and hadronic mass moments, which do not manifest this parameter reduction and depend on the full set of 13 matrix elements up to $1/m_b^4$. In light of this, we propose an experimental analysis of the $q^2$ moments to open the possibility of a model-independent $V_{cb}$ extraction from semileptonic decays including the $1/m_b^4$ terms in a fully data-driven way.

Furthermore, electroweak penguin amplitudes enter at a level comparable to the tree topologies. In the past, a discrepancy was found in the correlation between the CP asymmetries of $B_d^0 \to π^0 K_{\rm S}$. We provide the state-of-the-art picture of this situation and consider new constraints, finding that the effect has become larger. An attractive explanation is offered by a modified electroweak penguin sector. We propose a new method to determine the relevant parameters. It employs an isospin relation between the amplitudes of the $B \to πK$ decays, and makes only minimal use of the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry. Using current data as well as future scenarios, we demonstrate how the mixing-induced CP asymmetry of $B_d^0 \to π^0 K_{\rm S}$ plays a key role in this analysis. The application of our strategy at the next generation of $B$-physics experiments may establish New Physics and reveal new sources of CP violation in the electroweak penguin sector.

We consider generic leptoquark couplings to quarks and leptons and match to Standard Model effective field theory. After evolving the resulting operators to low energies, we connect to EDM experiments by using up-to-date hadronic, nuclear, and atomic matrix elements. We show that current experimental limits set strong constraints on the possible CP-violating phases in leptoquark models. Depending on the quarks and leptons involved in the interaction, the existing searches for EDMs of leptons, nucleons, atoms, and molecules all play a role in constraining the CP-violating couplings. We revisit QCD factorization of $B\to ππ$ form factors at large dipion masses, by deriving new constraints based on the analyticity properties of these objects. We then propose a parametrization of the form factors, inspired by the leading-twist QCD factorization formula, that incorporates all known analytic properties. This parameterization is used to interpolate between the QCDF results and the constraints from the $B^*$ pole. Based on this interpolation, we predict the $B\to ππ\ellν$ decay rate in a larger phase space region than previous studies could. We obtain a partially-integrated branching ratio up to $\mathcal{B} \simeq \mathcal{O}({10^{-6}})$, which implies that a measurement of the non-resonant semileptonic decay is potentially within reach of the Belle II experiment.

Abstract:
We calculate tree-level contributions to the inclusive rare $\bar B \to X_{s(d)} \, \ell^+\ell^-$ decays. At the partonic level they stem from the five-particle process $b \to s(d) \, q \bar q \, \ell^+\ell^-$, with $q \in \{u,d,s\}$. While for $b \to d$ transitions such five-body final states contribute at the same order in the Wolfenstein expansion compared to the three-body partonic decay, they…

At the partonic level they stem from the five-particle process $b \to s(d) \, q \bar q \, \ell^+\ell^-$, with $q \in \{u,d,s\}$. While for $b \to d$ transitions such five-body final states contribute at the same order in the Wolfenstein expansion compared to the three-body partonic decay, they are CKM suppressed in $b \to s$ decays. In the perturbative expansion, we include all leading-order contributions, as well as partial next-to-leading order QCD and QED effects. In the case of the differential branching ratio, we present all results completely analytically in terms of polylogarithmic functions of at most weight three. We also consider the differential forward-backward asymmetry, where all except one interference could be obtained analytically. From a phenomenological point of view the newly calculated contributions are at the percent level or below.

Using the isospin symmetry, we determine hadronic $B\toππ$ parameters from data where new measurements of direct CP violation in $B^0_d\toπ^0π^0$ resolve a discrete ambiguity. With the help of the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry, the $B\toππ$ parameters can be converted into their $B\toπK$ counterparts, thereby allowing us to make predictions of observables. A particularly interesting decay is $B^0_d\toπ^0 K_{\rm S}$ as it exhibits mixing-induced CP violation. Using an isospin relation, complemented with a robust $SU(3)$ input, we calculate correlations between the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries of $B^0_d\toπ^0 K_{\rm S}$, which are the theoretically cleanest $B\toπK$ probes. Interestingly, they show tensions with respect to the Standard Model. Should this $B\toπK$ puzzle originate from New Physics, electroweak penguins offer an attractive scenario for new particles to enter. We present a strategy to determine the parameters characterising these topologies and obtain the state-of-the-art picture from current data. In the future, this method will allow us to reveal the $B\toπK$ dynamics and to obtain insights into the electroweak penguin sector with unprecedented precision.

Should it be due to New Physics, a modified electroweak penguin sector provides particularly interesting possibilities. We present a new method to determine the electroweak penguin parameters, which uses an isospin relation and requires only minimal $SU(3)$ input. We apply it to the current data for $B\toπK$ decays and discuss the prospects for utilizing CP violation in $B^0_d\toπ^0K_{\rm S}$. The strategy has the exciting potential to establish New Physics in the electroweak penguin sector in the high-precision era of $B$-physics.

We test a data-driven approach based on QCD factorization for charmless three-body $B$-decays by confronting it to measurements of CP violation in $B^- \to π^- π^+ π^-$. While some of the needed non-perturbative objects can be directly extracted from data, some others can, so far, only be modelled. Although this approach is currently model dependent, we comment on the perspectives to reduce this model dependence. While our model naturally accommodates the gross features of the Dalitz distribution, it cannot quantitatively explain the details seen in the current experimental data on local CP asymmetries. We comment on possible refinements of our simple model and conclude by briefly discussing a possible extension of the model to large invariant masses, where large local CP asymmetries have been measured.

Particularly interesting are $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ and $B^0_d\toπ^-π^+$ decays, which are related by the $U$-spin symmetry of strong interactions, and allow for the extraction of CP-violating phases and tests of the Standard Model. The theoretical precision is limited by $U$-spin-breaking corrections and innovative methods are needed in view of the impressive future experimental precision expected in the era of Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We have recently proposed a novel method to determine the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing phase $φ_s$ from the $B_s^0\to K^-K^+$, $B_d^0\to π^-π^+$ system, where semileptonic $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays are a new ingredient and the theoretical situation is very favourable. We discuss this strategy in detail, with a focus on penguin contributions as well as exchange and penguin-annihilation topologies which can be probed by a variety of non-leptonic $B$ decays into charmless final states. We show that a theoretical precision as high as ${\cal O}(0.5^\circ)$ for $φ_s$ can be attained in the future, thereby offering unprecedented prospects for the search for new sources of CP violation.

Such a directional dependence would be evidence for Lorentz-invariance violation in weak interactions. A difference in lifetime between nuclei that are polarized in the east and west direction is searched for. This difference is maximally sensitive to the rotation of the Earth, while the sidereal dependence is free from most systematic errors. The experiment sets a limit of $2\times 10^{-4}$ at 90 % C.L. on the amplitude of the sidereal variation of the relative lifetime differences, an improvement by a factor 15 compared to an earlier result.

LHCb has obtained first results with uncertainties at the $7^\circ$ level. Due to $U$-spin-breaking corrections, it will be challenging to reduce the uncertainty below ${\cal O}(5^\circ)$ at Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We propose a new strategy, using $γ$ as input and utilizing $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, which allows an extraction of $φ_s$ with a future theoretical precision of up to ${\cal O}(0.5^\circ)$, thereby matching the experimental prospects. Since $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ is dominated by penguin topologies, new sources of CP violation may be revealed.

Using $B^0_s\to D_s^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, LHCb has recently reported the new result $(0.39\pm0.33)\times10^{-2}$ of the corresponding observable $a^s_{\rm sl}$. We point out that other current $B$ decay data imply $a^s_{\rm sl} = (0.004 \pm 0.075)\times10^{-2}$. In view of this strong constraint, we propose to use $B^0_s\to D_s^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ and similar flavor-specific decays as a new tool to determine both the production asymmetry between $B^0_s$ and $\bar B^0_s$ mesons, and the CP asymmetry in the subsequent $D^\pm_s$ decays. The former serves as input for analyses of CP violation in $B^0_s$ channels, with significant room for improvement, while the latter offers an exciting laboratory for New Physics.

Modern experiments on neutron and allowed nuclear $β$ decay search for new semileptonic interactions, beyond the ``left-handed'' electroweak force. We show that ongoing and planned $β$-decay experiments, with isotopes at rest and in flight, can be exploited as sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance. The variety of correlations that involve the nuclear spin, the direction of the emitted $β$ particle, and the recoil direction of the daughter nucleus allow for relatively simple experiments that give direct bounds on Lorentz violation. The pertinent observables are decay-rate asymmetries and their dependence on sidereal time. We discuss the potential of several asymmetries that together cover a large part of the parameter space for Lorentz violation in the gauge sector. High counting statistics is required.
