We report on the observation of the spin-exchange dynamics of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms in the ground state $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ and in the metastable state $^3\mathrm{P}_0$. We report on the observation of the spin-exchange dynamics of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms in the ground state $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ and in the metastable state $^3\mathrm{P}_0$. We implement the mixed-dimensional two-orbital system using a near-resonant and magic-wavelength optical lattices, where the $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ and $^3\mathrm{P}_0$ atoms are itinerant in a one-dimensional tube and localized in three dimensions, respectively. By exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach method, we observe the spin depolarization of the $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ atoms induced by the spin-exchange interaction with the $^3\mathrm{P}_0$ atom. Our work could open the way to the quantum simulation of the Kondo effect.

Abstract:
We developed a laser system for the spectroscopy of the clock transition in ytterbium (Yb) atoms at 578 nm based on an interference-filter stabilized external-cavity diode laser (IFDL) emitting at 1156 nm. Owing to the improved frequency-to-current response of the laser-diode chip and the less sensitivity of the IFDL to mechanical perturbations, we succeeded in stabilizing the frequency to a high-…

We developed a laser system for the spectroscopy of the clock transition in ytterbium (Yb) atoms at 578 nm based on an interference-filter stabilized external-cavity diode laser (IFDL) emitting at 1156 nm. Owing to the improved frequency-to-current response of the laser-diode chip and the less sensitivity of the IFDL to mechanical perturbations, we succeeded in stabilizing the frequency to a high-finesse ultra-low-expansion glass cavity with a simple current feedback system. Using this laser system, we performed high-resolution clock spectroscopy of Yb and found that the linewidth of the stabilized laser was less than 320 Hz.

Abstract:
We report on the investigation of the scattering properties between the ground state $^1S_0$ and the metastable state $^3P_0$ of the fermionic isotope of $^{171}$Yb. We successfully measure the $s$-wave scattering lengths in the two-orbital collision channels as $a_{eg}^+=225(13)a_0$ and $a_{eg}^-=355(6)a_0$, using the clock transition spectroscopy in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The result shows that the interorbital spin-exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic, indicating that $^{171}$Yb atom is a promising isotope for the quantum simulation of the Kondo effect with the two-orbital system.

We study theoretically the mixed state properties of a strong uniaxially-anisotropic type II superconductor with the Pauli paramagnetic effect, focusing on their behaviors when the magnetic field orientation is tilted from the conduction layer ab plane. On the basis of Eilenberger theory, we quantitatively estimate significant contributions of the Pauli paramagnetic effects on a variety of physical observables, including transverse and longitudinal components of the flux line lattice form factors, magnetization curves, Sommerfeld coefficient, field distributions and magnetic torques. We apply these studies to Sr_2_RuO_4_ and quantitatively explain several seemingly curious behaviors, including the H_c2_ suppression for the ab plane direction, the larger anisotropy ratio and intensity found by the spin-flip small angle neutron scattering, and the first order transition observed recently in magneto-caloric, specific heat and magnetization measurements in a coherent and consistent manner. Those lead us to conclude that Sr_2_RuO_4_ is either a spin-singlet or a spin-triplet pairing with the d-vector components in the ab plane.

We discuss influences of the anisotropy ratio of coherence length, and differences between the s-wave and the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairings. The calculations are performed by two methods, the Eilenberger theory and the London theory comparatively, and we study the cutoff function of the extended London theory, which will be helpful in the analysis of the small angle neutron scattering in the vortex states.

On the basis of Eilenberger theory, we study the vortex state when a magnetic field is applied nearly parallel to the ab plane in a chiral p-wave superconductor with a large anisotropy ratio of ab and c, as in Sr2RuO4. We quantitatively estimate the field dependence of the pair potential, magnetization, and flux line lattice form factor, and study the transition from the chiral p_- state at low fields to the nonchiral p_y state at high fields. Even for exactly parallel fields to the ab plane, transverse fields exist in the chiral state. The chiral-nonchiral transition disappears when the magnetic field orientation is tilted within 1 degree from the ab plane. This may be a reason why the experimental detection of this transition is difficult.

Soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been performed for one of the heavy fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and a $4f$-localized ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase. The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $hν$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant and localized models, respectively. The Ce valences in CeRu$_2X_2$ ($X$ = Si, Ge) at 20 K are quantitatively estimated by the single impurity Anderson model calculation, where the Ce 3d hard X-ray core-level PES and Ce 3d X-ray absorption spectra have shown stronger hybridization and signature for the partial $4f$ contribution to the conduction electrons in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.
