Strain engineering is a powerful mean for tuning the various functionalities of ABO3 perovskite oxide thin films. Rare-earth orthoferrite RFeO3 materials such as NdFeO3 (NFO) are of prime interest because of their intriguing magnetic properties as well as their technological potential applications especially as thin films. Here, using a large set of complementary and advanced techniques, we show that NFO epitaxial thin films, successfully grown by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-SrTiO3, show a strong magnetic anisotropy below a critical thickness tc of 54 nm, associated with the occurrence of structural modifications related to symmetry and domain pattern changes. By varying the tensile misfit strain through the decrease of film thickness below tc, the amplitudes of in and out-of-plane magnetization can be continuously tuned while their ratio stays constant. Furthermore, different low-temperature magnetic behaviors are evidenced for strained and relaxed films, suggesting that the strain-induced structural state impacts the magnetic phase stability.

Antiferroelectrics are promising materials for high energy density capacitors and the search for environmentally-friendly and efficient systems is actively pursued. An elegant strategy to create and design new (anti)ferroic system relies on the use of nanoscale superlattices. We report here the use of such strategy and the fabrication of nanoscale BiFeO3/NdFeO3 superlattices and in depth characterization using high resolution X-ray diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The structural analysis at atomic scale demonstrates that such superlattices host anti-polar ordering most likely described by an antiferroelectric-like Pbnm symmetry. Temperature dependence of anti-polar state and structural transition further hint that the stability of the anti-polar state is controlled by the BiFeO3 layer thickness within the stacking and, in a more moderate way, by interlayer strain. Discovery of such polar arrangement in superlattices and the possible generalization to the whole rare-earth family pave the way to new platforms for energy storage application as well as nano-electronic devices.

Ferroelectric and photovoltaic properties of BiFeO3/LaFeO3 superlattices grown by pulsed laser deposition have been investigated being the bilayer thickness). For a high concentration of BiFeO3 a ferroelectric state is observed simultaneously with a switchable photovoltaic response. In contrast for certain concentration of LaFeO3 a non-switchable photovoltaic effect is evidenced. Such modulation of the PV response in the superlattices is attributed to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition which is controlled with the increase of x. Remarkably, concomitant to this change of PV mechanism, a change of the conduction mechanism also seems to take place from a bulk-limited to an interface-limited transport as x increases.

Abstract:
The comprehensive research of the electronic structure, thermodynamic and electrical transport properties reveals the existence of inhomogeneous superconductivity due to structural disorder in Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ doped with La (Ca$_{3-x}$La$_x$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$) or Ce (Ca$_{3-x}$Ce$_x$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$) with superconducting critical temperatures $T_c^{\star}$ higher than those ($T_c$) observed in th…

The comprehensive research of the electronic structure, thermodynamic and electrical transport properties reveals the existence of inhomogeneous superconductivity due to structural disorder in Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ doped with La (Ca$_{3-x}$La$_x$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$) or Ce (Ca$_{3-x}$Ce$_x$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$) with superconducting critical temperatures $T_c^{\star}$ higher than those ($T_c$) observed in the parent compounds. The $T-x$ diagrams and the entropy $S(x)_T$ isotherms well document the relation between degree of an atomic disorder and separation of the {\it high-temperature} $T_c^{\star}$ and $T_c$-bulk phases. In these dirty superconductors with the mean free path much smaller than the coherence length, the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenber theoretical model does not well fits the $H_{c2}(T)$ data. We suggest that this can result from two-band superconductivity or from the presence of strong inhomogeneity in these systems. The multiband model very well describes the $H-T$ dependencies, but the present results as well as our previous studies give arguments for the scenario based on the presence of nanoscopic inhomogeneity of the superconducting state. We also revisited the nature of structural phase transition at $T^{\star}\sim 130-170$ K and documented that there might be another precursor transition at higher temperatures. The impact of the magnetic Ce-Ce correlations on the increase of $T_c$ in respect to the critical temperatures of Ca$_{3-x}$La$_x$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is also discussed.

A new family of relaxor dielectrics with the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (nominal composition Ba6M3+Nb9O30, M3+ = Ga, Sc or In) were studied using dielectric spectroscopy to probe the dynamic dipole response and correlate this with the crystal structure as determined from powder neutron diffraction. Independent analyses of real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function were used to determine characteristic temperature parameters, TVF, and TUDR, respectively. In each composition both these temperatures correlated with the temperature of maximum crystallographic strain, Tc/a determined from diffraction data. The overall behaviour is consistent with dipole freezing and the data indicate that the dipole stability increases with increasing M3+ cation size as a result of increased tetragonality of the unit cell. Crystallographic data suggests that these materials are uniaxial relaxors with the dipole moment predominantly restricted to the B1 cation site in the structure. Possible origins of the relaxor behaviour are discussed.

Structural, and differential scanning calorimetry, measurements are reported. Doping with La3+ results in a reduction in tetragonality and cell volume; a partial recovery was then observed for the smaller Ln3+ ions and suggests the onset of partial substitution of the rare earth on the B-site. The ferroelectric-paraelectric transition temperature results also consistent with an increased probability the B-site occupation with decreasing ion size.

The results demonstrate that while a small volume contraction is observed at the transition temperature, consistent with an insulator-metal transition, both the beta and gamma phase of BiFeO3 exhibit orthorhombic symmetry i.e. no further increase of symmetry occurs under the present experimental conditions, contrary to previous suggestions. Furthermore we observe the gamma orthorhombic phase to persist up to a temperature of approximately 950 C before complete decomposition into Bi2Fe4O9 (and liquid Bi2O3), which subsequently begins to decompose at approximately 960 C.

A detailed investigation using variable temperature powder neutron diffraction demonstrates that BiFeO3 undergoes a phase transition from the ferroelectric alpha phase (rhombohedral, R3c) to a paraelectric beta phase (orthorhombic, Pbnm) between 820 oC and 830 oC. Co-existence of both phases over a finite temperature interval, together with abrupt changes in key structural parameters, confirm that the transition is firstorder. The beta phase corresponds to the GdFeO3-type perovskite. The metastability of BiFeO3 relative to Bi2Fe4O9 above 810 oC precludes observation of a reported cubic gamma phase above 925 oC under the present experimental conditions.
