Good quality In2S3 films were grown by Dr Blade method from a powder synthesized in a chemical bath, and oxidized to obtain In2O3 films and films of intermediate composition. The oxidation process and kinetics are studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis, which shows complex phenomena. The study is completed by scanning electron microscopy and EDX measurements. X-ray diffraction and UV-visible spectroscopy results are also shown. The oxidation process begins significantly above 420 C, and it appears that at least one intermediate crystal phase takes place in the solid solution, suggesting that the replacement of sulfur by oxygen atoms occurs at different temperatures in the different crystallographic sites. The obtained samples show a band gap varying continuously between 1.94 eV and 3.72 eV.

Understanding mechanisms in DSSCs is fundamental for their improvement; this includes the nanocrystalline semiconducting layer behaviour. Different mesoporous TiO2 layers are fabricated and analyzed for possible use in DSSC solar cells. The preparations included the addition of P123 triblock copolymer as structuring agent to the synthesized anatase sol. This preparation was also mixed with Degussa P25 nanoparticles in one case and polystyrene latex in another. Mesoporous mixed TiO2-SiO2 thin layers were also analyzed. The diverse morphology and features are studied by microscopic techniques and by means of spectral quantum efficiency of a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) that uses as photoelectrode the unsensitized porous TiO\_2 layer. Contact angle measurements are also performed. We have found that a very high specific area due to very small nanocrystals and small pores can hinder electrolyte penetration in the pores formed by TiO\_2 nanograins, affecting photoelectrodes efficiency.

Tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) oxides are one of the most important classes of ferroelectrics. Many of these framework structures undergo ferroelastic transformations related to octahedron tilting deformations. Such tilting deformations are closely related to the Rigid Unit Modes (RUMs). This paper discusses the whole set of RUMs in an ideal TTB lattice and possible crystal structures which can emerge owing to the condensation of some of them. Analysis of available experimental data for the TTB-like niobates lends credence to the obtained theoretical predictions.

In2S3(1-x)O3x is known from preceding studies to have a bandgap varying continuously as a function of x, the reason why this solid solution is potentially interesting in the field of photovoltaics. In this work, we present results on oxidation of In2S3 by heating in air atmosphere to obtain the desired material. The oxidation is accompanied by a mass loss due to the substitution of S by O atoms that is studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis. It appears that the temperature region in which the oxidation occurs is strongly dependent on the texture of deposited films. As-grown films deposited by chemical bath deposition are subjected to nano-oxidation occurring at lower temperature than oxidation of materials that are characterized by a better crystallinity and larger crystallite size. X ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (including EDX) were used to get information on the compounds and the texture of films. The main conclusion of the paper opens the perspective of practical applications for producing layers for solar cells.

Ferroelectric phase transition in the semiconductor Sn2P2S6 single crystal has been studied by means of neutron scattering in the pressure-temperature range adjacent to the anticipated tricritical Lifshitz point (p=0.18GPa, T=296K). The observations reveal a direct ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in the whole investigated pressure range (0.18 - 0.6GPa). These results are in a clear disagreement with phase diagrams assumed in numerous earlier works, according to which a hypothetical intermediate incommensurate phase extends over several or even tens of degrees in the 0.5GPa pressure range. Temperature dependence of the anisotropic quasielastic diffuse scattering suggests that polarization fluctuations present above TC are strongly reduced in the ordered phase. Still, the temperature dependence of the (200) Bragg reflection intensity at p=0.18GPa can be remarkably well modeled assuming the order-parameter amplitude growth according to the power law with logarithmic corrections predicted for a uniaxial ferroelectric transition at the tricritical Lifshitz point.

Structural, and differential scanning calorimetry, measurements are reported. Doping with La3+ results in a reduction in tetragonality and cell volume; a partial recovery was then observed for the smaller Ln3+ ions and suggests the onset of partial substitution of the rare earth on the B-site. The ferroelectric-paraelectric transition temperature results also consistent with an increased probability the B-site occupation with decreasing ion size.

Experiments reveal that PbK2LiNb5O15 which belongs to the tetragonal tungsten bronze family presents paraelectric and ferroelectric phases and a complex structural change between them. High and low temperature phases are of symmetry P4/mbm and Pba2 respectively, so that this change is also of ferroelastic type. As presented here, crystallographic results hint at a displacive character of the ferroelectric ordering but show a more complex behaviour, with a clear order-disorder mechanism which accompanies the appearance of ferroelasticity. To complete our knowledge of this material, we have performed Raman experiments which exhibit a low frequency mode, but no clear soft mode is observed.

We consider the evolution of the phase transition from the parent hexagonal phase $P6_{3}/mmc$ to the orthorhombic phase $Pmcn$ that occurs in several compounds of $A'A''BX_{4}$ family as a function of the hcp lattice parameter $c/a$. For compounds of $K_{2}SO_{4}$ type with $c/a$ larger than the threshold value 1.26 the direct first-order transition $Pmcn-P6_{3}/mmc$ is characterized by the large entropy jump $Rln2$. For compounds $Rb_{2}WO_{4}$, $K_{2}MoO_{4}$, $K_{2}WO_{4}$ with $c/a<1.26$ this transition occurs via an intermediate incommensurate $(Inc)$ phase. DSC measurements were performed in $Rb_{2}WO_{4}$ to characterize the thermodynamics of the $Pmcn-Inc-P6_{3}/mmc$ transitions. It was found that both transitions are again of the first order with entropy jumps $0.2Rln2 and $0.3Rln2$. Therefore, at $c/a ~ 1.26$ the $A'A''BX_{4}$ compounds reveal an unusual Lifshitz point where three first order transition lines meet. We propose the coupling of crystal elasticity with $BX_{4}$ tetrahedra orientation as a possible source of the transitions discontinuity.

The phase sequence on cooling is: uniform $β$ phase - stripe incommensurate phase (ferroelastic) - incommensurate equilateral-triangle ($EQT$) phase (ferroelectric) - incommensurate $ELT$ (ferroelectric and ferroelastic) - uniform $α$ phase. The $ELT$ blocks could be responsible for the large light scattering in the vicinity of $α-β$ transition.
